What Makes YOU Dance? One of the people who had a lasting and unquestionably significant impact on my life was a young woman named Gardner Ann Garrett. I was six years old and my mother enrolled me in tap and ballet classes in her Montgomery, Alabama studio. I suppose I must have twirled around the house enough that my astute mom thought she might channel that energy into something a bit more productive, and something that didn’t result in lamps getting knocked over. Plus, I was pretty shy, and this would surely get me out of my shell. And did it ever. I don’t know how much dance lessons really did to make me more outgoing, but I will say this. One dance recital wearing satin and tulle, not to mention real makeup, and I was changed forever. I will never forget being dusted with some kind of skin glitter before taking the stage with the other girls in my class and thinking life couldn’t be any better. Pirouettes, chasses, deboules and jetes. We all felt like prima ballerinas with the Bolshoi Ballet before switching into our Shirley Temple tap shoes for the big finale. Shuffle, hop, step! I can still hear the sounds, not necessarily in unison, of the taps on our black patent leather shoes as we tapped our little hearts out, looking, I’m sure, as if we were trying to scrape the varnish off the stage. From the time I was three, I owned a pink jewelry box, courtesy of Santa Claus, that was home to a necklace or two. Far more important in that box was the pop-up ballerina that when wound up would spin to The Swan Song. I used to wind and watch her dance for hours at a time, imitating her permanent pose. Dance lessons were a dream come true. I eventually graduated to pointe class and my organized dance days were done. Pointe, for those who haven’t experienced this torture, is ballet with shoes that force you on your tippy toes. Childbirth is worse, but not by much. There is a dancer inside all of us. Network television obviously understands this well based on the success of Dancing With The Stars. It has filtered down to local charities that sponsor their own version of the show in ongoing efforts to raise much-needed funds. Granted, it is sometimes painful to watch a contestant writhe erratically through a routine. A lack of rhythm is a deal breaker if you plan to show your best steps to an audience. Someone needs to be honest after a rehearsal or two and then, let the chips fall where they may. It does take guts to perform publicly and all who are willing to sacrifice for a cause should be commended. Gallant efforts, however, are rarely appreciated by the masses. Dancing With The Stars is every bit as much about voting someone off the show as it is a respect for talent.
Different things bring out our inner dancer. Scoring a touchdown or catching a prize fish do it for some. And, under certain social circumstances, many of us let our hair down and dance as if we were rock stars. I can clearly remember my mother dancing as she vacuumed whenever Englebert Humperdinck came on the radio. I haven’t since seen a vacuum cleaner used as a dance prop, but it sure worked for Mom. It is also true that adult beverages may occasionally be involved in casting our inhibitions to the wind. But sometimes raw emotion simply takes over. Think wedding receptions. There is usually so much joy at these events that you can’t help but be expressive, especially after one too many glasses of celebratory champagne or a couple of tequila shots. Be honest. Aren’t there certain songs that make you move? You can’t help it. You simply become one with the music. Of course, there is a huge difference in doing this alone versus in a group setting. If everyone in the crowd is in the mood, you tend to feel invisible when you join in. Line dancing was born this way. However, YouTube is filled with invisible moments, and they ain’t pretty. Dance lessons for adults are as popular as ever, and not just for engaged couples working on their wedding dance. You can sign up for an instruction package at a studio and come out with a pretty decent command of basic steps. Pros at these studios can work miracles with even the most challenged of students. Additionally, the physical and psychological benefits are amazing. Obviously, there is value because of the exercise. Just look at some of the celebrities who have danced on the television series and you can see how they positively improved their fitness levels. But dancing also relieves anxiety, boosts self-confidence, and provides a social outing. My pink jewelry box was lost at some point over the years during one of our moves. Last year Santa gave me a new one that is very similar to the original, only now the ballerina twirls to Lara’s Theme from Dr. Zhivago. It still works the same magic. June Birthdays 7

Freedom Rings Explore Local Juneteenth Celebrations
By Chloe Cadenhead
Juneteenth, an often overlooked event in our nation's history, is celebrated every year on June 19 to commemorate the end of slavery in America. On June 19, 1865, Union Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas to inform enslaved African Americans that they were free. This was two years after the Emancipation Proclamation, but due to the slow spread of news and slaveowners’ reluctance to relinquish their property, many slaves across the South remained in captivity until Juneteenth. In 1866, June 19 was celebrated in Texas as Jubilee Day. Over time, the celebration spread to other states, and was declared an official Texas state holiday in 1980, but wasn’t recognized as a federal holiday until 2021. While Juneteenth celebrations can come in many forms, traditional modern Juneteenth celebrations typically consist of barbecues, music and community. Pensacola is home to multiple annual events to celebrate the liberation and culture of African Americans. We have rounded up details on some events and celebrations taking place across the city in observance of the upcoming Juneteenth holiday.

The 2025 MLK Day parade was originally scheduled for January 20, but due to monumental Florida snowfall, the city rescheduled the parade to coincide with Juneteenth. This Mardi Gras-style parade features a variety of participants from local businesses, churches, schools, civic groups and elected officials on floats of all shapes and sizes decorated for this year’s theme, “One Team - One Dream.” The annual Pensacola MLK Day Parade is a free and family-friendly event. The parade will kick off at 11 am at the intersection of Spring and Garden streets in downtown Pensacola. For more information on the 2025 MLK Day parade, visit mlkparadepensacola.com.

MAKE WAY FOR TURTLES Sea Turtle Nesting Season is Here By Jenny Diamond
Summer is officially here! School is out, the days are hot, the Gulf water is warm and sea turtle nesting season is here! Sea turtle nesting season on the Gulf Coast occurs from May to October. Female sea turtles come ashore at night, dragging themselves along the sand and digging deep nesting chambers with their back flippers, laying roughly 100 eggs before covering the nest and returning to the water. Our area sees four species of sea turtles: green, leatherback, Kemp’s Ridley and loggerhead, which is the most common species of sea turtle along the Florida Panhandle. In 2024, of the 30 turtle nests laid on county land, 29 were laid by loggerheads. Occasionally, a turtle will nest during the day, with some species like the small Kemp’s Ridley almost exclusively nesting during the day, but the other turtle species that nest along the Gulf do so at night; thus, dedicated staff and volunteers with the Escambia County Natural Resources Management division, Perdido Key State Park and Gulf Islands National Seashore patrol the shoreline at sunrise each morning to spot tracks and identify and mark nests. After an incubation period of roughly 60 days, hatchlings emerge from their eggs and make a daunting climb to the surface from the nest chamber and then ideally scramble toward the Gulf, where they will spend the first few years of their lives in offshore sargassum patches that provide food, warmth and protection from predators. Photo courtesy of MYFWC Florida Fish and Wildlife
In addition to morning beach patrols, there are other volunteer-led initiatives to support public education about turtle safety. Volunteers walk the Pensacola Beach Pier daily, working with local anglers, pier staff and Pensacola Beach lifeguards to ensure proper protocols are followed if a turtle is hooked from the fishing pier. Turtles come to the pier because they are attracted by the fisherman’s bait, but end up getting accidentally hooked in many cases. Additionally, when a turtle washes ashore in what is referred to as “stranding,” it is typically because the turtle has ingested plastic, hooks, filament or other types of hazardous material making it difficult for the turtle to eat and swim regularly. Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) standards indicate that any turtle that is hooked or stranded should receive medical attention, even if it is not suffering from an obvious injury like a boat strike. The closest sea turtle hospital and rehabilitation facility is the Gulfarium’s C.A.R.E. Center located in Destin, and if the center is at capacity, then turtles must be transported to the Gulf World Marine Institute in Panama City Beach. When turtles are hooked or stranded, pier staff reach out to the county or to Gulf Coast Turtle Watch (GCTW), a 501(c)(3) that was established in early 2024. GCTW works with permitted volunteers to transport hooked or stranded turtles to the C.A.R.E. Center or Marine Institute. Safely and comfortably transporting a turtle that might weigh several hundred pounds is no easy feat, and volunteers often have to utilize their personal vehicles. Thus, one of the GCTW’s first initiatives was to raise funds to purchase a transport van big enough to easily transport turtles. Thanks, in part, to a recently awarded $20,000 environmental grant from Florida Power and Light, the vehicle has been purchased and is currently being prepped for action for the busy summer season. In addition to following safety protocols while fishing and boating, the public can do their part to help protect

sea turtles by following the ‘Leave No Trace’ and ‘Clean, Dark, Flat’ initiatives. Turtles are cumbersome on land and can easily become stuck if they fall into a hole or encounter beach debris, so it is important that visitors knock down any sand structures, fill in any holes, and remove chairs, canopies, umbrellas, toys or trash at the end of each day. Turtles can also be disoriented by artificial lighting, which can range from lights from homes, businesses and passing cars to flashlights or phone lights on the beach at night. Both nesting mothers and hatchlings instinctively follow moonlight to lead them to the water, but when disoriented, a nesting mother may crawl away from the ocean after laying her eggs and suffer from exposure. Hatchlings can additionally suffer from lighting disorientation and crawl away from the water, which puts them at greater risk of death from exposure, as well as predation from birds or ghost crabs. As of 2018, a Barrier Island Lighting Ordinance requires all water-facing residential and business structures to use turtle-friendly lighting practices: closing blinds and keeping outdoor lights shielded at night and using lowwavelength amber or ‘Wildlife Friendly’ bulbs available from local retailers for outside lighting. Despite the ordinance, ambient lighting still adversely affects nesting turtles and hatchlings. In 2024, 100 percent of nests on Perdido Key and 46 percent of nests on Pensacola Beach were subject to hatchling disorientation from artificial lighting. To support the ‘dark’ element in the ‘Clean, Dark, Flat’ initiative, those who visit the beaches at night should avoid using bright lights. Many local businesses sell turtle-safe red light flashlights or red film covers for cell phone lights. If you do see a turtle on the beach at night, turn off lights, avoid making noise and keep a safe distance to avoid disturbing the nesting process. To learn more about sea turtles and volunteer initiatives in our area, there are several social media sites the public can follow: Escambia County Natural Resources Management and Gulf Coast Turtle Watch, Inc. on Facebook.
Panhandle Terrapin Project Summer is not only an active season for sea turtles, but it is also the nesting season for another turtle species in the panhandle. Diamondback terrapins are closely related to pond turtles and thrive in brackish, marshy areas, nesting on adjacent sandy stretches. Though diamondback terrapin habitats officially stretch from coastal New England, down the Atlantic coast, and throughout the Gulf Coast to Mexico, for many years, very little information existed on terrapin existence/habits in the panhandle. The Panhandle Terrapin Project was established in 2005 with the goal of identifying terrapins in our area and scouting potential habitats. Once it was established that terrapins were indeed active and nesting in the Panhandle, volunteer efforts expanded to nest monitoring. Now, teams of volunteers in Baldwin, Escambia, Santa Rosa, Okaloosa and Walton counties survey primary and secondary nesting sites to identify tracks, identify and monitor nests by performing visual head counts to track areas heavily populated with terrapins. On the occasion that a terrapin is caught, volunteers also contact trained coordinators to notch or satellite tag the terrapins for rerelease and future studies. The Panhandle Terrapin Project is supported by USGS, the Pensacola and Perdido Bays Estuary Program, and FL Sea Grant. Two of the seven species of diamondback terrapin live in the Panhandle: the ornate terrapin and the Mississippi terrapin. Diamondback terrapins are identified by their light gray-bluish skin, dark speckles and distinct orange patterns on their shells. Terrapins face distinct dangers: they often drown as bycatch in crab traps and are heavily sought in the pet trade for their unique colors and features. Crab pots can be fitted with inexpensive BRDs (bycatch reduction devices) to prevent terrapins from entering traps without hindering the catch. If you see or catch a terrapin, please contact coordinator Rick O’Connor at roc1@ufl.edu with details and photos.

to the United States, arriving along the Gulf Coast in early March, and gradually spreading across dozens of states. After spending the colder months in Central America or Mexico, these beautiful birds are a welcomed sight that will continue to brighten your world through the end of summer.
We have brought you details on these incredible animals and ways to attract them to your yard or garden as more of them flock to Florida.
Evidence from fossils and evolutionary trees suggests they split from swifts and treeswifts about 42 million years ago in Eurasia, suggesting that hummingbirds were once present in the Old World. The ancestral species of modern hummingbirds arrived in South America around 22 million years ago, where they diversified into the vast array of species we see today. Of the more than 340 known species, the University of Florida (UF) states that 16 are found in the United States, and only three in Florida. “The most prevalent species of hummingbird in Florida is the ruby-throated hummingbird. We have three species in Florida, and I’ve never seen the other species but the black-chinned and rufous hummingbirds can occasionally be spotted in the winter here,” UF/IFAS Residential Horticulture Extension Agent and Master Gardener Volunteer Coordinator Tia Silvasy explained. Only three inches long and weighing as little as a penny, the ruby-throated hummingbird earned its name from the male's brilliantly colored throat feathers, which contain air bubbles that give off an iridescent red tone in full light. The ruby-throated hummingbird’s breeding range extends from central Kansas to the East Coast, and from Saskatchewan to central Florida. Although some may remain in South Florida year-round, most spend the winter in Mexico and South America. “Hummingbirds migrate from Mexico and South America and return to Florida in March, so from March through October is the best time to see them in Florida,” Silvasy said.

FLYING FEATS In terms of migratory feats, hummingbirds go the farthest of any bird in proportion to body length, according to the National Audubon Society. Some hummingbird species can fly at speeds greater than 33 miles per hour. For a 2.5-inch hummingbird, the few thousand miles traveled between breeding grounds and winter habitats is a tremendous journey. The rufous hummingbird has the longest migration of any hummingbird species, with an annual trek of more than 3,000 miles from Alaska and Canada to southern Mexico. "Ruby-throated hummingbirds, on the other hand, follow shorter routes within North America, traveling from eastern regions to southern Mexico, Panama and sometimes the Caribbean." “Ruby-throated hummingbirds make a non-stop 500-mile journey across the Gulf of Mexico in less than a day, relying on fat reserves for energy,” Silvasy said. Contrary to popular belief, hummingbirds do not actually hum. This sound is produced by the rapid flapping of their wings, which can beat at speeds of up to 200 times per second. The humming sound is a distinctive feature that has earned them their name. One of the most fascinating things about hummingbirds is their helicopter-like stunts. Unlike most birds that flap their wings up and down, hummingbirds can move their wings in a figure-eight pattern, allowing them to fly backward, sideways and even upside down. Soaring is the only maneuver these feathered friends can not perform. Like the chimney swift, another master flier and member of the same avian order, Apodiformes (meaning “footless”), hummingbirds have tiny feet. According to the American Bird Conservancy, having small feet reduces aerodynamic drag in flight, however, there's a downside: These birds cannot walk. They can only perch or scoot sideways.
NESTING Ruby-throated hummingbirds are the only species that nest east of the Mississippi River. While some hummers stay year-round—especially in South Florida—others are snowbirds, passing through in the spring and fall. Hummingbirds are masters at camouflaging their nests, making them almost impossible to spot, even when you are looking. They build small walnut-size nests composed mostly of plant down, adorned with lichens and moss, and bound with spider webs or fine plant fibers. According to the UF Department of Wildlife Ecology and Conservation, nests are typically built over water sources for better protection against predators, and to provide a cooler environment. Female hummingbirds lay two very small eggs, measuring less than a half-inch long (the size of a jelly bean). After 20 days of incubation and about three to four weeks of growing, the young hummingbirds are ready to leave the nest. According to the American Bird Conservancy, banding research has shown that many hummingbirds, particularly juveniles, tend to return to the same general area each year, but not necessarily the same yard.
FEEDING To acquire enough strength to support all of this highspeed activity, hummingbirds need to consume large amounts of high-energy food. While nectar is their primary food source, they also consume spiders, insects and tree sap, especially during the breeding season when protein is essential for their young. Their long needlelike bills and specially adapted tongues allow them to reach nectar in deep tubular flowers. The last half-inch of the long tongue is divided into equal halves, each grooved on the outside edge to form two tube-like structures. Nectar is drawn into the tongue much the same way liquid travels up a straw. One hummingbird may need nectar from hundreds of blossoms each day to maintain its body weight, Silvasy explained. Ruby-throated hummingbirds can visit more than 1,000 flowers in a single day.

Rufous Hummingbird
For their size, hummingbirds have among the largest appetites in the bird world, feeding every 10 to 15 minutes from dawn until dusk. During this period, they eat more than half their weight in food and consume eight times their weight in water. Hummingbirds also have outstanding spatial memory and can remember feeder locations years later. They are also able to keep track of bloom peaks and remember which flowers they've visited. This is because a large portion of a hummingbird's brain is occupied by the hippocampus, an area dedicated to learning and spatial memory.
To attract these summer visitors to your yard or garden, Silvasy recommends planting some of their favorite varieties of native plants. “Planting native species ensures a sustainable and beneficial environment for hummingbirds,” Silvasy explained. “They prefer orange, pink and red tubular flowers and their top nectar plants include firebush (Hamelia patens), coral honeysuckle vine (Lonicera sempervirens) and red salvia (Salvia coccinea).”
Feeders stocked with sugar water will also attract hummingbirds, but they require frequent cleaning and “Hummingbirds also play a crucial role in pollination by filling to keep the birds coming back for more. If neglected, transferring pollen between flowers as they feed on nectar. artificial feeders can pose a health threat to the birds. ATTRACTING HUMMINGBIRDS
Hummingbirds are attracted to plants with brightly colored or tubular blossoms, but they don’t feed at all flowering plants. They tend to feed in the early mornings and evenings, before settling in for the night.
can cause rapid bacterial growth in these feeders, which is extremely harmful to hummingbirds. To avoid this, UF scientists recommend changing the solution every 3 to 5 days. Feeders should be cleaned with hot water and white vinegar. Do not use soap or chlorine bleach (Clorox™). The American Bird Conservancy advises that using sweeter solutions, sugar substitutes or honey in feeders can be lethal to hummingbirds. To attract hummingbirds and ensure their safety and enjoyment, feeders should be placed in areas that offer both sun and shade and away from any windows, but be sure to avoid direct sunlight as heat stimulates bacterial growth. We can all do our part to help protect these dazzling creatures by creating hummingbird-friendly environments in our yards and reducing pesticide use. From Scraps to Soil Easy and Convenient Methods to Begin Composting at Home By Nicole Willis
Composting is a great way to reduce waste and lower your environmental impact, while also creating nutrient-rich soil for your plants. It provides a simple way to turn everyday scraps into something valuable, right from your kitchen or backyard. Whether you’re an avid gardener with an expansive garden, or simply looking for your own way to do something good for the environment, composting can easily fit into your daily routine. Here’s a look at three of the easiest, most popular and compact composting methods to help you begin your composting journey.
Tumbler Composting Compost tumblers are a great option for anyone looking for a convenient and low-smell composting setup. Tumblers are sealed containers mounted on a base that can be rotated using a handle. This design makes it easy to mix compost without the need to manually turn it with a fork or shovel. When the tumbler is turned, it mixes and aerates the contents. As the oxygen runs through the compost materials, aerobic decomposition occurs, which is the breakdown of organic materials in the presence of oxygen. Turning the tumbler regularly helps keep the mix aerated, aiding in decomposition. Over time, this process creates great compost.
Tumbler composting is great for people with limited yard space. Tumblers can be as small as just a few feet wide and comparable in size to a backyard grill. Most gardening and home improvement stores sell the machines pre-assembled or in a kit that is easy to put together. They typically range in price from $50 to $200, depending on the size.
Green material (kitchen scraps, produce peels, etc.) and brown material (leaves, paper, etc.) can both be added to tumbler composters. Items like dairy, animal products, fats, oils and heavily processed foods should never be mixed into compost. The maintenance required for tumbler composting is minimal; scraps can be added and the machine can be spun every few days. In warmer climates like ours, tumbler composting can produce usable compost in as little as three weeks. When the climate gets cooler in the fall and winter, it can take up to two months. Once the compost becomes a soil-like texture, it is ready to use.
PENSACOLA MAGAZINE | 25
Vermicomposting Did you know you can compost indoors? Vermicomposting allows you to create nutrient-rich soil from the comfort of your own home. This composting method uses worms— typically red wigglers, as they thrive in decomposing material—to break down food scraps into nutrient-rich castings, or worm poop. The setup for vermicomposting can be put together cheaply and easily; all you need is an elevated plastic or wooden bin with holes for ventilation and drainage. The bin should then be layered with moist, brown material for bedding and a bit of soil. The bedding should be kept moist, but not soaking wet. Since this composting method only requires a bin, it takes up little space, making it ideal for indoors and smaller spaces like under the sink or in the garage. The bin must stay in a temperature-controlled area so that the climate is stable for the worms. According to Shelia Hu of the Natural Resources Defense Council, vermicomposting should be done in temperatures from 55 to 77 degrees Fahrenheit.
The only other necessary task is harvesting castings (collecting your new compost) every few months. The first batch of compost will be ready anywhere from 3 to 6 months, depending on the size of your setup and the number of worms.
Compost Bins When you think about composting, you most likely think about the traditional compost bin. This method is extremely popular, and for good reason; composting with a bin is easy, simple and requires little space. A compost bin is a large container where organic materials are layered and left to decompose naturally over time. Like tumbler composting, bin composting uses aerobic decomposition. However, instead of turning the compost with a handle, bin composting requires you to turn compost material with a fork or shovel.
The most important part of vermicomposting is making sure that the worms are cared for properly so they can work their magic. They should be fed once a week by burying food scraps, like fruit and vegetable peels, under the bedding.
Compost bins require a bit more maintenance than tumblers, but are still easy to maintain. The compost should be turned every couple of weeks to introduce oxygen. The more you turn your compost pile, the faster the soil will be ready. Another important thing to monitor is the moisture levels. If your compost is too wet, it can stink, and if it is too dry, the decomposition process will slow down.
It is best to cut up the scraps into smaller pieces, so it is easier for the worms to eat. As previously stated, animal products and fatty or oily items should be avoided. It is always best to research the dietary needs of your composting worms to keep them happy and healthy.
A good balance of green and brown materials is key to maintaining a successful bin compost system and creating quality, usable compost. When there is an even balance of materials, proper moisture levels and regular turning, usable compost will be ready in 3 to 6 months.
Apart from the initial setup and weekly feedings, vermicomposting requires minimal maintenance.
A bin setup can be purchased or made with plastic bins, garbage cans or wood. Hu recommends a minimum of

3-foot-by-3-foot space for bin composting, but you can go larger if you want a higher soil yield. Typically, the bottom of the bin is open, allowing it to touch the soil and introduce more beneficial nutrients to the compost. Some people find drilling holes in the side of their bins helpful for ventilation.
otherwise end up in a landfill and turn them into nutrientrich soil that helps your plants and the planet. For more information these composting methods, visit nrdc.org and gardeningsolutions.ifas.ufl.edu.
When starting a bin setup, there are two main options— open or closed bins. Open bins are just that—a bin without a lid. This is a convenient way to compost, as you are able to easily add material to the bin. Closed bins are simply lidded. The main difference between open and closed composting is the access and smell. Open composting is convenient because it allows you quick access, however, it also allows animals quick access to rummage through your pile. Open composting can also smell a bit more than closed composting, as the decomposing materials are constantly exposed. Due to the size, this composting method works great in backyards and larger porches. This method is best for people who aren’t looking to spend a ton of money, have a decent amount of outdoor space and have the time to monitor and turn their pile. Whether you’re working with worms, tossing a tumbler or sifting scraps in a backyard bin, composting is a great way to reduce waste and get your green thumb dirty. With a little time and effort, you can take items that would

Living Large in Small Spaces By Kelly Oden
Tiny homes and accessory dwelling units are having a moment. As housing costs continue to climb, more families are getting creative, converting garages and backyards into cozy spaces for aging parents, college kids or just a little extra space. These multigenerational setups help to keep costs low and they offer a blend of both independence and family togetherness. Others are tapping into the tiny home trend to carve out income-producing rentals, art studios and home offices. Pensacola Magazine caught up with four local tiny home owners to learn how they brought their small-space visions to life and made the most of every square foot. PENSACOLA MAGAZINE | 29
Tell me a little about the building process—what was that journey like? Since we do this every day for clients at our design studio, In Detail, the process was joyful and smooth. We partnered with one of our go-to builders, Heath Kelly Construction. Making the process enjoyable is one of our superpowers—especially when it’s your own home. We believe building a home should feel like a celebration, not something that causes stress. How did you go about designing or planning for such a small space? Every great small space starts with the floor plan—it must be functional and full of signature touches. That’s my sweet spot in our firm. I love the schematic design process whether it’s 500 or 5,000 square feet. I often work with clients across the country on creating or reviewing plans for new builds. The challenge here was to give the tiny home its own voice—and I think we nailed it. What are some features or design choices that make the most of the small space?
Style Meets Substance Homeowner: Cheryl Kees Clendenon Location: East Hill, Pensacola Was the house a new build or an existing structure you adapted? The property is new construction. I own the main house, which sits on a corner lot. I built the largest structure (525 square feet) the city would allow in the backyard. To give the tiny home its own identity, we installed a fence and oriented the entrance toward the side street. From the outside, it feels like its own property—but in reality, it’s part of ours. It was a creative solution that gave it presence.

Libby loves to cook, so a typical tiny home one-wall kitchen would not cut it. We designed a real kitchen with a pantry (yes, a real pantry!), bar seating for two and a dining nook with a built-in bench. The bedroom includes a built-in makeup station that also functions as a desk. These features create interesting 'moments' in the house and built-ins can often save space.
But the real showstopper is the vaulted ceiling with storage loft—it brings volume and vertical interest, making the home Was the home designed with a specific feel far bigger than it is. And the glass door from the kitchen to the side yard? purpose or lifestyle in mind? We do all design plans in-house with our engineer typically handling the structural components. On larger new projects, we work with a long-time associate licensed architect to present clients with a full-service design team from soup to nuts. It has been an excellent working relationship and creates a creative synergy often missing in new builds.
Don’t underestimate the design of a tiny house. Small doesn’t mean simple or boring. With thoughtful planning, you can create something packed with function and style. We squeezed more personality into 525 square feet than many homes triple the size. Design always matters— but especially so when space is limited.
Is there anything in the space that really surprises people when they visit? The scale surprises people—it’s not just livable, it’s spacious. We prioritized the main living/kitchen zone and sacrificed bedroom size to do it. That was the right call. It fits more people than you’d think and still feels open and bright. Do you have a favorite nook or feature in the home? What makes it special? I think the kitchen is my favorite place overall, as it really is nicely sized comparatively speaking, and I love the vaulted ceilings with the box beams. It cannot be emphasized enough—the value created was 10 times the cost to do it.

It was built for Jeff 's mom to live in. She had already downsized from another full-size home by moving into a 600-square-foot efficiency apartment in Southtown where she spent several years. So, moving into this 420-square-foot home wasn't too difficult. We wanted a tiny house with big amenities, including a full-size kitchen and bathroom. We needed it to be handicapped-friendly but also feel relaxed and comforting. It’s really one large area, which I call a 'real' living room because she has everything she needs to live in just one room—other than the bathroom, of course. Her room has everything in it —closets, a bed, recliners, a dining table and chairs and a fully equipped kitchen.

We wanted Pat to be closer to us as we all enter a new chapter in life and we happen to have enough space in our backyard to build a tiny house. Fortunately, this has really worked out well for the three of us. With the limited space and cost of building materials, we knew it had to be a tiny house. Some of our favorite shows to watch are tiny home programs, so we had given it quite a bit of thought beforehand. After deciding which builder to use, we chose from what options and floor plans they had available and modified it to suit her needs. What are some features or design choices that make the most of the small space?
The first thing that absolutely everyone has to say about it is how cute it is and how it looks like it has been here the entire time. As if it were an extension of the original historic home. We put in a lot of effort in achieving that. We wanted it to have the same architectural style and feel as our house, which was built circa 1867. The next thing our guests are amazed by is that it's only 420 square feet. We knew adding on the full-length porch and two sets of French doors would create the illusion of more space. Opening the French doors up with the swing and rocking chair creates a feeling
Do you have a favorite nook or feature in the home? What makes it special? Personally, I am very proud of Jeff 's design of the whole house, but mostly of the full-sized walk-in shower; it's roomy and very modern. My absolute favorite feature is the front porch swing. Any advice you'd offer to someone considering a tiny home or ADU? My advice is if you can do it, DO IT! We have absolutely no regrets.
Placement of the air conditioner, kitchen appliances, washer and dryer and walkin shower was challenging. Fortunately, Jeff has experience in design which came in very handy. He was able to map everything out in the planning stages and when the structure was roughed in, we were able to trace the areas out on the floor with tape to see if things needed to change or be relocated. Were there any unexpected challenges in making the space feel livable and functional? We were lucky in this respect. Again, we've experienced unexpected challenges before and weren't surprised when they came up. Luckily, with ample time to consider the project and it being tiny, everything turned out pretty much as expected. The hardest was carving out a space for the stackable washer/dryer and linen closet. It was the tightest fit, but Jeff found space in the bathroom that worked perfectly. Did you work with an architect, designer or builder, or was this more of a DIY project? We worked with a local shed building company. Taking what design they already had and making a few modifications, they did the majority of the work. We installed the cabinetry and appliances.

Mayor D.C. Reeves unveiled the Mayor’s Childcare Access Program today, a bold new initiative aimed at expanding high-quality, affordable childcare options for families across the City of Pensacola. The program is a strategic effort to better utilize city resources and to leverage the Community Redevelopment Agency’s portion of funding from the Escambia Children’s Trust, ensuring local children and working families have the support they need. “Access to affordable, quality childcare is not just a family issue—it’s an economic issue,” Mayor Reeves said. “By aligning city resources and targeting available funding from the Escambia Children’s Trust, we will build the kind of infrastructure to allow Pensacola families to thrive and our economy to grow.” This initiative also reflects Mayor Reeves’ leadership on the national stage as Chair of the Jobs, Education, and Workforce Committee with the U.S. Conference of Mayors, where he has championed innovative, community-driven strategies to address the childcare crisis facing cities across the country. The Mayor’s Childcare Access Program will prioritize: • Supporting and expanding existing childcare centers in underserved areas, particularly within the CRA district. • Providing direct grants and technical assistance to childcare providers to improve capacity, quality, and workforce development. • Partnering with local employers to incentivize on-site or subsidized childcare solutions. • Connecting families with trusted childcare resources and streamlining access to available subsidies and scholarships. Expanding childcare access aligns with recent findings from the Florida Chamber of Commerce, which has identified childcare availability as a critical factor in workforce participation and economic competitiveness statewide. Employers and communities across Florida are increasingly recognizing that access to childcare is a top priority for attracting and retaining talent. To lead this effort and other related initiatives, the city has hired Theresa Cserep as its Education and Youth Programs Officer—a newly created role under Mayor Reeves’ administration. Cserep brings a decade of experience in educational policy, youth engagement, and nonprofit coordination, and will work closely with city departments, childcare providers, the Escambia Children’s Trust, and community stakeholders to implement the new program.
“Theresa’s passion and expertise make her the ideal person to help us build a more supportive environment for Pensacola’s youngest residents,” Reeves said. “This is about investing in our future — starting with the very first years of life.” “It’s an honor to contribute to strategic education and youth development initiatives. These are areas essential to the future of our community,” Cserep said. “I look forward to working with schools, community partners and city leaders to ensure our children and young people are supported, empowered and not overlooked.” As a key part of the initiative’s launch, the City of Pensacola will host a Childcare Summit on May 28. The summit will bring together a diverse group of local and state experts, childcare providers, business leaders and community advocates. It will serve as a platform for collaboration, idea-sharing and actionable planning to strengthen childcare access across the region.

UWF to Add Bachelor’s Degree in Graphic Design and Digital Media This Fall The University of West Florida (UWF) announced the addition of a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design and Digital Media degree program, with a specialization in illustration during an artwork unveiling event on May 6 at the Darrell Gooden Center on UWF’s Pensacola campus. The program, currently being offered as a specialization track in the Bachelor of Fine Arts program in the College of Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities, will launch as a stand-alone degree this fall. “This program has had strong enrollment for many years,” UWF Provost Dr. Jaromy Kuhl said. “Elevating this program to a bachelor’s degree program will make it more visible to prospective students and make graduates more marketable to employers.” The undergraduate degree program consists of 120 semester credit hours that prepares graduates to become graphic and digital media designers. Graduates of the program will be qualified for traditional and emerging roles as graphic designers, web designers, UX/UI designers, motion graphics designers, brand and identity designers, advertising designers, environmental graphic designers, exhibition designers and illustrators. Job openings for graphic designers in Florida for 2023-31 are projected to increase by 9 percent, with 17,623 average annual job openings with an average mean wage of $58,910. “This degree already has an excellent record of placements for students,” Dean of the College of Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities David Earle said. “Graduates have been hired as designers or technical illustrators in companies as diverse as Northrop Grumman and EA Games. The department does a fantastic job preparing students through real-world, client-based opportunities so that students graduate with strong portfolios of applied projects that were actually used, rather than just homework assignments.” Cross-college collaboration and the use of the Usha Kundu MD, College of Health’s Anatomage Tables for illustration courses will be a key part of the new degree program. To showcase that, art and design instructor Dale Castellucci and her students displayed stunning artwork using the Anatomage Tables at the degree announcement event. 3. Organize your tools and equipment Take in your cleaned garage and designate areas to store your various tools and equipment by category. This can help you think about creative storage solutions and optimal organization so you have more room for your woodworking projects. Think about installing overhead, ceiling-mounted storage racks for camping gear, decorations and other bulky items. Consider adding or replacing cabinets for more storage and organization. A great storage solution for organizing your tools and equipment is a storage cabinet like the Gladiator Premier PreAssembled 84" Tall Cabinet. Each cabinet features one fixed and three adjustable full-width shelves that can hold up to 400 pounds each, so you have plenty of room to store even your heaviest tools.
Four Easy Ways to Give Your Garage Workshop a Spring Refresh Spring has sprung! Are you ready to start some spring projects? If you're a DIY hobbyist, it's time to give your workspace a spring cleaning.
Another organizational feature to consider is a garage storage wall. Systems like the Gladiator®All-in-One Wall Kits help you create the perfect organizational space to get gear off the floor, maximize space and make it easier for you to quickly find any item you need. The kits are customizable, so you can choose from a variety of hooks, baskets and bins that fit your storage needs. 4. Optimize lighting and power sources Whether you're working on big or small projects, it's critical to have proper lighting and multiple power sources so you can work with your power tools safely and efficiently. Consider adding in wall accessories like a light bar or power strips.
During the winter, your garage workshop accumulates extra items, dust and debris that can make it impossible to do your best work. So, take advantage of the warmer weather and give your workshop a spring refresh with these four simple tips. Choose a light bar with adjustable lighting options so you can see every detail of your project. Light bars are great for 1.
