Sometimes you can’t see the forest for the trees, and I admit I have been guilty of not seeing all the greatness our city has to offer, its benefits often obfuscated by occasional bureaucracy and slow progress. Admittedly, those are hurdles every great city faces and we shouldn’t allow them to temper our optimistic enthusiasm. Thoughtful critiques are important and often necessary, but let’s not forget how good we have it.

In just the past year, our little Downtown slice of Pensacola has welcomed the Ruby Slipper, Fosko Coffee Barre, Pensacola Pedal Trolley, Ride More Bicycles, So Chopped-the list goes on and that’s just the business. We also have more events than ever, a burgeoning food truck industry, a Gallery Night that’s more popular than ever, exciting news of new developments, and various initiatives that prioritize health and

wellness. We’re really coming into our own!

Bike culture in Downtown is really symbolic of all the forward progress we’ve made. Just a few years ago, you’d be hard-pressed to find a group of cyclists leisurely taking in the sights and sounds of Downtown. Now, it is a daily occurrence. With new bike shops springing up seemingly everywhere and a quasi-bike-sharing program, your childhood’s favorite mode of transportation is helping people become healthier and see our roads and shops in a new way. Learn about the evolution of this culture on page 12.

One of my favorite holidays of the year, Halloween, is just around the corner, and with it comes all manner of scary movies--some awful and some awfully good--and tales of ghosts and ghouls. Our own Dawn Gresko dived into Pensacola’s haunted past with the help of UWF’s Historic Trust and dug up some creepy facts. Read about the city’s dark delights on page 6.

Downtown Improvement Board It is with a heavy heart but a hopeful spirit that I write this month’s column.

Recently we said goodbye to a friend, Tim Crutchfield, who passed away suddenly on Sept. 16, 2015.

Tim was the parking manager for Downtown Pensacola, which meant he supervised our parking program through some very tumultuous times.

However, despite the changing landscape and challenges of the job, Tim always worked very hard to be consistent and fair. His job was not an easy one, but he handled the task professionally and was always courteous, even when dealing with an unhappy member of the public.

Tim had recently accepted a position to manage the parking system in Tallahassee, but has taken a different journey instead. Tim was a friend and I am happy to have known him. All of us at the Downtown Improvement Board will miss

‘Tis the season for goose bumps, ghastly ghosts, murder and mayhem, and a little tragedy and terror. For the month of October, UWF Historic Trust is offering another round of haunted walking and trolley tours for those who love to celebrate All Hallows’ Eve, or those just looking to be spooked by some scary stories inspired by Pensacola’s Downtown Historic District. Prepare for a spooktacular Halloween by joining the Downtown Crowd on a series of walking tours by UWF Historic Trust that take you through Seville Square as well as Palafox, Intendencia and Zaragoza streets. If you’d rather ride than walk, Trolley of the Doomed is back for another route through North Hill.

As America’s first settlement, Pensacola has its fair share of haunted history—just ask the members and volunteers of UWF Historic Trust, who run the annual Haunted House Walking and Trolley tours. Although the known by many names, the Trust has been conducting annual haunted tours in one form or another for the past 25 years. When the Historic Pensacola Preservation Board was repealed in 2001, their collections and buildings were transferred to the University of West Florida, and the Historic Pensacola Preservation Board became a direct support organization of the university known as West Florida Historic Preservation, Inc. The name of the West Florida Historic Preservation, Inc. was changed to UWF Historic Trust in 2013 to emphasize that the sites, structures, collections, programs

and exhibits of the organization represent a public Trust. Currently, the Trust manages the Historic Pensacola campus of UWF, which includes 28 properties in Downtown Historic Pensacola such as The Dorr House and The Lear-Rocheblave House.

Tours in Downtown Historic Pensacola will run on Oct. 16, 17, 23, 24 and 30. Every tour is open to all ages except the Redlight Tour, which is adults only because of its bars and brothels theme. Walking tour tickets are $15 per adult and $8 per child under 12.

Trolley tickets are $20 for adults, and $10 for children. Discounts are available for groups of 10 or more. Tours leave from the Voices of Pensacola Multicultural Center (117 E. Government St.) starting at 6:30 pm and they last one hour and 15 minutes. Before you head out on tour, don’t forget to pick up your ghost-hunter EMF detector to pick up any electromagnetic activity left by spirits. CREEPY COOKIES “I’ve had several scary experiences on my tours,” said Jessie Drossos, who has been a volunteer tour guide for 15 years because of her love for history and Halloween. “The one that really stands out is the year we did tours in an open wagon pulled by a horse. I was doing the Seville Tour, which goes east on Zaragoza and around Seville Quarter, then turns west on Government. I began to talk about a house on the street where Donovan Realty is now.

Back in the 1800s, a lumber baron lived there and he was single and it was said that his cook made the best chocolate chip cookies in the world. People might not have liked the guy, but they would try to get invited to his house just to eat the cookies. As we passed the house, I smelled fresh cookies out of the oven. I looked around the wagon and, sure enough, other people smelled it, too. It was kind of freaky.”

SHIFTING SHADOWS “One of my stories is about The Dorr House built in 1871 by Clara Dorr,” said Laurie Mortiz, who has volunteered as a haunted tour guide for 10 years. “Mrs. Dorr died in 1898 and the family sold the house in 1904. It is now part of the University of West Florida Historic Trust village, and it is on the Ghastly Ghosts of North Seville tour. A few years ago we were doing tours in July and I had a small group—a dad and his young daughter, and a mom and her two young sons. We were walking from the Thomas Gray House across Seville Square towards Dorr House and Kennedy House when I thought, ‘That’s weird–the first floor lights are on. Looks like somebody forgot to turn them off.’ As my group approached the house, there was a shadow figure standing in the northeast corner window. It turned and walked straight towards the back porch and disappeared into the dark. My whole group saw it, so I stopped and said, ‘That’s not normally part of the tour.’ Then I explained to the group that the building was locked down after the last village tour and closed at 4 pm. Also, it would’ve been impossible to walk straight through the inside of the house and onto the porch. Even though there is a hallway on the side of the house, it dead ends into a wall, then you’d have to go through the locked kitchen to get to the back door leading to the porch.”

GHOST GIRL “One of my personal experiences that I will share occurred at the Lear-Rochblave House,” said Miriam Hoover, who earned a BA in History and has volunteered as a haunted tour guide for three years. “The house was built in 1890 by Kate and John Lear, who never lived in it and filed for divorce before they could move in. The Rochblaves lived there during the turn of the century and they had children, but none who passed away. Many of the historic homes have documented something terrible happening in the home. Death, murder, some tragedy or trauma that we can link paranormal activity.

Interestingly enough, there’s no event documented that might explain why the Lear-Rochblave House is haunted, but workers and people on tour have spotted a young girl, seen girls dancing, or smelled roses. While I was at work one day, a friend of mine and her family went out on a tour and the LearRochblave was the last house on the tour. My friend’s eight-year-old son suddenly freaked out and said he wanted to leave. When she took him outside, he said there was a little girl sitting on the stairs who was angry and wouldn’t stop staring at him during the tour. Two or three months passed, and I was doing the tour with a family that had kids. There was a three-year-old girl and by the end of the tour we were best friends. We got to the house and were in the dining room when suddenly the girl came up hugging my apron with a hand covering her mouth. When we asked what was wrong, she slowly extended her arm and pointed at the stairway asking if that was a girl. Everyone looked, every hair on my body stood up, and she said a girl was sitting there. All I could say was, ‘Yeah, there probably is.’

We quickly left after that and completed the tour from outside the house.”

What does Mama Mia, the mythical King Stafylos, and Pensacola have in common? The Greek island Skopelos, of course. The Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church is hosting the 56th annual Greek Fest, and this year’s theme is Skopelos.

The Greek Fest is famous in the Gulf Coast for having amazing food, fun traditional music, and Greek dancers in traditional costumes. This three-day event draws upwards to 30,000 guests. This is no small festival. There will be live music; the popular Kostas Kastanis band will be back again this year to play traditional and modern Greek music throughout the weekend.

On the menu this year, served inside the hall, will be traditional roast lamb, lamb shanks, baked chicken, dolmathes,

moussaka, pastitsio, spanakopita, tiropita, and Greek salads. The outdoor taverna (between the church and the hall) will feature the popular gyros, souvlakia (kabobs) and sausage wraps, chicken tenders for the kids, Greek fries cooked in olive oil, and calamari.

Don’t forget the desserts. You can smell the sweet cinnamon and honey drenched baklava in the air. The festival is free to attend. The food, drinks, desserts and goods are for purchase. This year there will also be a selfie-booth so you can capture your Greek memories and share them with the world.

The Greek community loves to share its history and culture with Pensacola and Gulf Coast communities. Many of the founding church members were from Skopelos,

and that’s why this year’s theme is Skopelos.

A special traditional bridal costume will be on display at the festival this year. The bridal costume was hand-made by church members Ourania Taladianou Stamatelos and Marouthitsa Raptou Stamatelos, natives of Skopelos. They have contributed to keeping the Skopelos heritage alive by making the traditional bridal costume, called a skopelitisa. The costume is on display at the Voices of Pensacola Multicultural Center in its multicultural exhibit. The UWF Historic Trust will lend the costume to the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church for display at the festival.

The Greek culture has a long and rich history rooted in Pensacola. As far back as the mid to late 1800s Greeks left the shores

of their homeland and immigrated to Pensacola.

These early Greeks brought with them a love of their culture, heritage and faith that is still shared today, mainly through the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church and the festivals.

The festival does more than share the history and culture of our Greek community; the festival is on a mission to give back to the community too.

The Philoptochos Ladies Society (philoptochos means friend of the poor) that acts as the philanthropic arm of the church is involved in local charities, and over the years it has raised money for scholarships and community outreach programs. This year’s community outreach program benefits the Gulf Coast Kid’s House, Manna

Food Bank, and Guardian ad Litem.

So not only will you be supporting your local Greek church by treating yourself to delicious food and desserts, you’ll be supporting your local community at large as well. Food tends to sell out quickly so it’s recommended you get Greek early.

Located on 1720 W. Garden St., the festival hours are 11 am to 10 pm Friday and Saturday, and 12 pm to 6 pm on Sunday. Tickets, cash and checks are accepted at all cash registers. The season for football is almost here, Pensacola! Next year in September, the University of West Florida’s new football team—The Argonauts, or Argos for short—will play their first home game of the inaugural 2016 season against Missouri S&T at Bayfront stadium in Downtown Pensacola. With over 5,000 seats available in the stadium, the Downtown Crowd’s welcoming cheers for Pensacola’s new home team will surely echo through the streets: Go Argos!

In the meantime, while we wait for the inaugural season to kick off, there’s four intrasquad scrimmages open to the public this fall: Oct. 3, 17, 24 and Nov. 7. The scrimmages are scheduled on Saturdays and start at 11 am. While the team hones their skills for the upcoming season, Pensacolians are encouraged to attend the free practice game and root for our players. The first Argos scrimmage on Sept. 12 drew a total of 750 supporters from the school and community.

“A scrimmage isn’t really a game, there’s no score, so you don’t know whether to expect 50

or 1000 people in the crowd,” said Dave Scott, UWF athletic director.

“But we drew a crowd of 750 and people really wanted to be a part of it. They get to say, ‘I was here at the first UWF scrimmage’.”

If you missed September’s scrimmage, then catch up with the team at UWF’s University Field on Oct. 3 and Oct. 24. Mark your calendars for the special scrimmage on Oct. 17 at Bayfront stadium, where you’ll be able to enjoy the fall breeze by the bay and get a glimpse of how a 2016 Argos football game will be set up at the stadium.

“For me, the best part was after our first scrimmage,” said Dave Scott. “We saw student athletes come off the field to thank those in the crowd for being there.

At UWF Athletics we’ve prided ourselves on recruiting good, quality individuals to be student athletes and football has stepped right into that mold.”

by Pensacola’s first college-level team. To accommodate the game, the green will be altered so a football field will run down to the third baseline and into the infield,

then the fence will be extended to the left field so there’s a fulllength football field (100 yards) in the stadium. To create a football venue that runs parallel to the third baseline, there will be bleachers placed in the outfield. A lot of the stands already in the stadium will be used, and Hancock Club will still be treated as a President’s Box. “The Wahoos have done a great job providing an awesome entertainment experience for the people of Pensacola,” said Dave Scott. “We want to work with them to do the same for UWF football and bring additional people to the downtown community.”

The team strongly recommends buying tickets sooner rather than later since many are reserved ahead of time for athletic staff, players and boosters, so the number of seats are limited.

Dugout Club tickets start at $250 and includes dugout access, food and beverages. Other ticket levels include Blue at $115, Green at $95, and Silver at $70 per person.

W

ith Downtown Pensacola’s resurgence has come a more progressive way of life and an emphasis on healthy, sustainable living.

Few cultural shifts embody this change more than the increase of bicycle traffic Downtown. It is a fun mode of transportation rooted in childhood, an activity around which we sometimes compete and obsess but always experience great joy.

A bike-sharing program at Emerald Coast Tours, a new bike shop named Ride More Bicycles, and a new monthly event from Bike Pensacola called Slow Ride are all evidence that the twowheeled phenomenon is becoming a more natural and pervasive aspect of Downtown life.

Emerald Coast Tours offers tourist and citizens alike a range of flexible options to meet your pedaling needs.

Daily rates are $10 and weekly rates are $50. They will even deliver the bike(s) for free to the Downtown area.

For just $10, you can have the bikes delivered to East and North Hill and for $20 they’ll take them all the way to Pensacola Beach.

Nic Schuck operates Emerald Coast Tours, which also offers Segway and bike tours of historic Pensacola, and says that business has been booming.

“I was trying to create a market around the growth of Downtown,” Schuck said, explaining the concept’s inception. “Bicycling all across the nation has become so trendy and Pensacola seems like the perfect place for that. There’s slow traffic and frequent stop signs.”

Schuck said that the rental rates have been increasing every year, mainly to tourists who want an inexpensive, fun way to see all the city has to offer.

“We rent out single-speed cruisers right now, which is perfect for exploring the town at a leisurely pace of around 6 miles per hour,” said Schuck.

He hopes that Pensacola becomes more bike-friendly as the years go on, saying that the implementation of a Complete Streets program could help to both educate the public and make cyclists feel safe and secure.

For those looking to make a more long-term commitment, Bikes Plus on Palafox and Ride More Bicycles on Gregory Street are the perfect options.

The latter store is the brainchild of two brothers-in-law who share a passion for excellence and precision in all forms of cycling. The two opened the shop in early August and report that the community has been very responsive.

“You can tell this city is really passionate about bike culture and living in a healthy and sustainable way,” said Travis Coleman, owner of the store. “Cycling is a passion, whether it’s recreational, competitive or a business.”

burgeoning lifestyle shift down here in Northwest Florida where he grew up.

“It’s a joy just to be a part of that growing culture in Pensacola,” said Coleman.

Ride More’s interior design is beautiful with specialized road, mountain and hybrid bikes all on display.

The expert team is proficient and honest at giving advice and steering customers toward the best possible option by allowing them to test-ride multiple bikes and even offering a year of complimentary service.

“We want to build a friendship with our customers,” said Coleman.

“Maybe they’ll bring their kids in to buy their first bike, which is great. It’s a rite of passage. We also want to be involved in the community.”

By aligning themselves with existing

advocacy and fun ride groups, Ride More is well on their way to being as big a part of the biking culture as that culture has become a part of the city.

“We want to offer more selection, more equipment, more pro-level services and more bikes,” said Coleman. “Ride More is invested in this community.”

biking enthusiast, environmental advocate and all-around expert on sustainability. He has been biking everywhere in Downtown for close to 20 years and is overjoyed at the recent acceptance of the bikecurious lifestyle.

“Used to be, people would see

me with a bike and assume I’m homeless,” said Wagley. “It was such an anomaly. Now, they see me and realize I’m just one of the many people who cycle around here for work and pleasure.”

According to Wagley, the leisure side of the sport has taken off way more than the competitive side, but he welcomes it all. Part of the reason for this shift, he said, is various infrastructural changes that have been made that make the roadways safer for cyclists and pedestrians, including changing Palafox to a two-way street.

“I would grade Pensacola a ‘B’ for bikeability,” said Wagley.

“We’re built on a grid system where you can take a lot of side streets and there’s low speed limits, but often recreational cyclists prefer a separate road facility just for them.”

Wagley is part of the Bike Pensacola team, a consortium of enthusiasts dedicated to bikefriendly policies and public education.

Bike Pensacola recently launched slow ride events, which take place the first Saturday of every month.

RIDE MORE BICYCLES Around 100 people will gather at a local restaurant or business near the Downtown area and go for an eightmile, hour-and-a-half ride. The pace is very leisurely and no one gets left behind. Afterward, the crew ends up right back where they started and enjoy some refreshing beverages.

The event, Wagley said, has helped boost cyclist confidence and raise awareness of just how beautiful and bikeable Downtown is.

“People who participate in that will talk to people around them and that’s how cultural changes happen,” said Wagley. “That’s biking grew in Pensacola and that’s how it’ll continue to grow.”

Other longstanding events in Pensacola have also helped sustain the culture’s growth. The Subway Pensacola Cycling Classic, for example, is a three-stage racing event that includes a time trial across Pensacola Beach, a road race in Milton and the Criterium closed-circuit race in Downtown.

Usually, about 240 racers participate with friends, family and managers looking on.

“For Pensacola to show their support for this professional bike race in our city makes a great statement of how much we enjoy and appreciate sports tourism,” said David Mayo, founder of the race.

The race is the largest stage race in the Southeast and is a nonprofit event that benefit the Paralyzed Veterans of America.

The Criterium is just one small part of the renaissance of health and activity that happening is in Pensacola and moving forward, two wheels at a time.

I’m a single mother and one night of work during a Gallery Night can put a huge dent in necessary expenses like rent, daycare, and diapers for my son. Gallery Night Goes Pink Gallery Night is going pink this month. The American Cancer Society is looking to raise awareness for its Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk on Oct. 31.

By hanging pink ribbons all along Palafox and encouraging everyone to don their brightest pink apparel, the ACS will be out in full force to market all they do for the community. They will have about 100 confirmed volunteers at various information booths from 5 to 9 pm, sharing with people the story of the ACS and they have done in the fight against breast cancer.

“A lot of people don’t realize all that we do,” said Sally Cary, who spearheads the event. “We provide rides for people who can’t make it to their treatments. We fund research outside the area whose benefits return to our area in the form of a cure. We’re heavily invested locally.”

The local ACS has never done anything like this before, but based on Pensacola’s level of engagement with the organization, it should be nothing short of a rousing success. In fact, Pensacola’s Making Strides participation list is 25,000 strong, the largest group from here to Orlando “We have 455 teams,” said Cary. “We’re crazy but not too crazy. We’ll be selling T-shirts and more to get people excited along with us.”

There will even be Nissan cars wrapped in pink, courtesy of Sandy Sansing, on display at Gallery Night. People can take pictures with the brightly colored cars and show their support for the ACS’s important mission.

“We’re very blessed,” said Cary. “We want to get teams signed up for walk so they can help us raise funds for our mission. We want to be transparent, too, so we’ll be providing as much information as possible. We hope people will become interested and join us to save lives.”

STEPPING OUT IN STYLE

E

very year, the worlds of fashion and healthcare come together for one memorable evening of glitz and glamour, fundraising and cocktails. Baptist Health Care’s Stepping Out in Style event, coordinated by the organization’s foundation, has been going on for 39 years.

What started as a luncheon between ladies who wanted to look at some of the season’s trends has evolved into one of the year’s hottest events.

Starting last year, Stepping Out in Style began emphasizing local fashions from places like Indigeaux, The Market and Mainly Shoes, Fig at Duh for Garden and Home and more. No longer would attendees see widely produced fashion; instead, they would be treated to fabrics and styles unique to the Gulf Coast that audience members could go out to their locally run store to purchase and enjoy.

And it’s no longer just for the ladies, either. Men’s and children’s fashion will be on display as over a dozen professional models rock the area’s trendiest looks. The 16 | DOWNTOWNCROWD.COM

Foundation contracts the efforts of an expert designer who flies into town, goes around to all the stores and actually picks the pieces off the rack.

It is extremely important to event coordinators that audience members can actually buy the exact clothing they see on the catwalk. The fashion designer then comes back into town the day before the show to work with the models and make sure the entire event aesthetic is flawless.

The event is always a big hit. For every year in recent memory, the fashion show has sold out at 450 people, often weeks before the Oct. 15 event day. Last year, the Foundation raised $102,000 to improve quality of life in the community. This year’s funds will be focused on the mother and baby unit of Baptist Hospital. In addition to the runway show, this event will feature both silent and live auctions, hors doeuvres and a cash bar. The event starts at 5:30 and the fashion portion kicks off around 7 pm.

“We have many donors who look forward to the event and attend,” said Moorer.

“I think the community really loves it.

It’s a lot of work to put on but it’s always a success.”

The red carpet extravaganza happens at New World Landing and Moorer hopes that the affair continues to get bigger and better.

In which we unfairly judge upcoming attractions based solely on their trailers.

STEVE JOBS RELEASE DATE: October 23 CAST: Michael Fassbender, Kate Winslet, Seth Rogen, Jeff Daniels LEGEND RELEASE DATE: October 2 CAST: Tom Hardy, Emily Browning What I got from the preview: The true story of twin gangsters, the Krays, is brought to the screen with Tom Hardy playing both parts of this dynamic duo. The Krays were in charge of the organized crime spree that hit London during the 1960s, when gambling was beginning to take hold on all levels of British society. They were pretty cray. The trailer is like a gut-punch of adrenaline, mostly thanks to Hardy’s dedication and bravado.

Most notable for: This film is from the writers of L.A. Confidential, which remains one of the best gangster movies of all times. Couple that with the fact that Hardy is playing two characters and hopefully this movie is full of endlessly violent pulp entertainment.

Unqualified critical observation: Hardy has really made a name for himself. The Dark Knight Rises, Mad Max, this year’s upcoming The Revenant—all great films made better by his presence. Though I am typically bored by movies about organized crime (Black Mass or Gangster Squad, anyone?) this movie promises to be the exception rather than the rule, which is what you’d except from a movie about suave gangsters.

THE MARTIAN RELEASE DATE: October 2 CAST: Matt Damon, Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Sean Bean What I got from the preview: In the distant future, an astronaut becomes stranded on Mars while on a manned research mission. He is presumed dead by NASA and abandoned by his crew. But the astronaut is Matt Damon, and Matt Damon never dies.

With only meager supplies but possessing MacGyver-level resourcefulness, he fights against unimaginable odds on a planet he barely understands to get home alive.

Most notable for: Ridley Scott (Exodus: Kings and Queens, Prometheus, The Counselor) has not been on his A-game recently, but this adaptation of the novel by Andy Weir promises a return to Alien-level form.

Unqualified critical observation: Wow. The trailer gave me chills. We’re out of summer’s headache-inducing blitz of superhero movies and reboots, and we survived the glut of September. We’re now in Oscar season, and this month’s crop clearly demonstrates that. This is the kind of movie, like last year’s Interstellar, that you can sit down with for over two hours, learn about and appreciate the characters, and become fully invested in every second of failure and triumph.

What I got from the preview: My boy Michael Fassbender plays the complicated titular character in a way that is already receiving praise at film festivals. This movie traces Jobs’ life, from obsessive innovator to controversial public figure, with some of the top talent the industry has to offer. If the preview is any indication, his business and relationships will be presented with raw emotion and a frankly naked look at the inner workings behind the most successful company in world history.

Most notable for: In the years since his death, at least three movies and countless books have been distributed chronicling one of the most misunderstood and authoritarian mainstream business leaders in recent history. Yet no effort promises such uncompromising craft as this one, with Danny Boyle (Trainspotting, 127

Hours, 28 Days Later) and Aaron Sorkin (The Social Network, Moneyball, The West Wing) at the helm, the former a director with a uniquely real and intimate visual style and the latter a writer who has no equal when it comes to writing complicated stories in a compelling and smart way.

Unqualified critical observation: If you can’t tell, I am unbelievably excited. I’ve been on board through all the behind-thescenes drama (David Fincher was going to direct, Christian Bale was going to star) and am eagerly anticipating the emerging product. Just as The Social Network did not shy away from the more controversial and mean-spirited elements of Facebook’s rise to ubiquity, so will this movie provide a raw look at the best/worst organization out there.

GOOSEBUMPS RELEASE DATE: October 16 CAST: Jack Black, Odeya Rush, Dylan Minnette What I got from the preview: R.L. Stine and his imaginary demons come to life in this funlooking variation of the famous Goosebumps children’s books. After young Zach moves to a new town, he develops a quick crush on the girl next door, but quickly discovers that her father is the mastermind behind every child’s nightmare fantasies. Together, they must free themselves and the town from the CGI monsters.

Most notable for: I often wondered when these staples of 90s childhood would get the big screen treatment, and from the looks of it, it couldn’t have been done in a more delightful way.

Unqualified critical observation: Remember being a kid, developing a crush and dreaming of fanciful and dangerous adventures that would draw the two of you closer together? That daydream, near and dear but unfulfilled to many of us, becomes a nightmare in this movie that promises to become this generation’s The Goonies.

BRIDGE OF SPIES RELEASE DATE: October 16 CAST: Tom Hanks, Alan Alda, Amy Ryan What I got from the preview: An insurance lawyer, played by an aging Hanks, is recruited by the CIA to broker a deal during the Cold War that will either result in the rescue of a detained pilot in the Soviet Union, or the complete nuclear annihilation of two super powers. It’s more Saving Private Ryan than Catch Me If You Can, but seems to feature that signature Spielbergian optimism and entertainment nevertheless.

Most notable for: Acclaimed director Steven Spielberg teams up with the Coen Brothers for this tale of international intrigue, quiet negotiations, family drama, and unimaginable stakes.

Unqualified critical observation: Spielberg has had a series of critical and commercial shortfalls recently, his brand of wide-eyed childlike wonder eclipsed by today’s focus on gritty realism. He hopes to adapt with this entry, and with collaboration from some of Hollywood’s best writers, I’m as optimistic as his early films.

Noted astronomer P. Clay Sherrod explores the phenomenon of unidentified flying objects (UFOs) from 6 to 8 pm Saturday, Oct. 3, at Pensacola State College’s Hagler Auditorium, Building 2, on the Pensacola campus. The public is invited to this free lecture and audience participation forum that is ideal for students and families. Sherrod presents the history of UFO sightings and demonstrates the modern view of UFOs, extraterrestrials and the possibility that Earth is being visited by aliens. He examines where the sightings normally occur, what the typical report contains, and the physical makeup of these aliens as described by those purporting to have seen them.

In addition, Sherrod covers the psychological influence that the UFO revolution has had on everything from lifestyle and media to architecture throughout the world.

Mattie Kelly calls for volunteers for 20th annual Festival of the Arts

Mattie Kelly Arts Foundation is seeking volunteers for the 20th Annual Festival of the Arts to be held on Saturday, Oct. 24 and Sunday, Oct. 25 at the Mattie Kelly Cultural Arts Village in Destin.

Latin for “unknown land,” Terra Incognita contains 57 black-and-white photographs of marsh, scrub lands, dunes, beaches, swamps and forests along the Gulf Coast from the mouth of the Mississippi River to the Florida Panhandle. Cathy Pascoe shows off her high energy and whimsy in different media, primarily batik (wax and dye), “Noah’s Friends” and “Cat Tas Trophy” kittens. Leland Leonard is internationally known for his handcrafted fine furniture, especially the “October Table” in various sizes and woods, sofa tables and “Sugar Chests.” This is a must see show.

Art & Wine Festival Oct. 18 Pensacola Beach Chamber of Commerce invites you to the annual Art & Wine Festival, where you can stroll along the Pensacola Beach Boardwalk from 11 am to 4 pm on Sunday, Oct. 18. PMA presents Mucha: Master Artist of Art Nouveau Oct. 23 – Jan. 2 The works of Czech-born graphic artist Alphonse Mucha are coming to Pensacola Museum of Art thanks to the museum’s collaboration with the Tampa Museum of Art, Boca Raton Museum of Art and Collection of Jack Rennert, New York. Mucha designed various commercial items, such as posters, magazine covers, and postcards. With selected art from the Rowe Collection, Mucha: Master Artist of Art Nouveau exemplifies the lush intricacy of Mucha’s style and the organic, ornate linear design of the Art Nouveau movement.
