Josh Newby, editor Is there a more magical time of year than November? If you answered December, you are right, but November serves as a wonderful teaser for the most wondrous time of year. There’s a slight chill in the air, many outside events for those who want to show off their fall fashion, but just as many inside events for those who want respite from that chilly 60 degree weather. It is an inspiration for all who consider leaving Florida behind forever in the summer months, and a further validation of life here for those who love all the diverse offerings. November has become synonymous with Foo Foo Fest, that grand festival umbrella under which many dozen art and culture events happen. The curation has improved as the festival staff has grown, and this year promises events reaching far and wide, both geographically and

November through the generations. Foo Foo Fest is a time when tourists experience the wonderment that is Pensacola and residents are reminded of it. Speaking of wonderment, Winterfest comes back again this year to treat holiday fans young and old to a musical journey through Downtown. You’ll meet the Grinch, the Three Wise Men, Charlie Brown, and so many more staples of both secular and religious Christmas celebrations. With all the food we’ll likely be consuming, it’s expected--even encouraged--that we put on a few pounds. Luckily, we have put together a nice conversion chart showing you just what type of exercise you’ll have to do to work off the ham, mashed potatoes, and rolls of your choice. To depart slightly from the holiday theme, we’ve also included a story on the new mural covering the Jefferson Street parking garage and some tips for NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Months). There’s quite a few local authors who find inspiration on our historic streets. Find those locations and meet the authors inside! Finally, the Downtown Improvement Board recently said goodbye to executive director Ron Butlin. But never fear! Downtown has a new captain, Curt Morse, who will provide vision and direction in the coming years. Read about his plans and his hopes. As you can see, November really is quite a month! Not just for Downtown Crowd, but for all of Downtown Pensacola.

THANKSGIVING DAY:

for the

Holidays

Pensacola’s Turkey Trot

W

e all know the holidays are bitter sweet. It’s a time when (for better or for worse) we get to spend time with relatives who are otherwise located miles away. It’s also a time when we decide to throw all notions of moderation to the wind and carry on by stuffing our faces with extra helpings of mashed potatoes, pumpkin desserts, and other delicious delights found on the family table. While you might not have experienced feelings of guilt as you ushered the foodie goodness into your insatiable gullet, you’ve probably noticed you’ve been avoiding the bathroom scale for days since that twelve-course holiday feast. Well, guilt no more. We’ve done the digging and the math for you, so you know how to keep your body (and spirit) honed for the holidays with your favorite go-to exercise(s).

Swimming

3 bread rolls (240 calories) = 20 minutes swimming Just keep swimming… And you’ll outmaneuver those carbs you loaded up on by chowing down on not one, not two, but three hearty bread rolls.

4 | DOWNTOWNCROWD.COM

Cycling

2 servings of mashed potatoes (434 calories) = 1 hour biking Put your mettle to the pedal and engage in some moderate cycling to burn off all those extra helpings of Mom’s mashed potatoes.

Running

1 serving of pumpkin pie (323 calories) = 30 minutes running As long as you keep a steady pace, you can burn those calories running in a typical 5K race like Pensacola’s Turkey Trot.

Weight Lifting

4 slices of ham (280 calories) = 1 hour 15 minutes weight lifting A little over an hour of strength training and all your guilt will melt away… The physical signs of it at least.

Power Yoga

2 turkey legs with skin (426 calories) = 1 hour 30 minutes power yoga Blend some powerbuilding vinyasa poses with your regular routine if you want to burn some serious calories.

Couch Potato

5 servings of gravy (340 calories) = 6 hours and 45 minutes resting Be prepared… to do absolutely nothing! Allow your Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) to take over calorie burning at an average rate of 50 calories per hour.

Sign up for one of the best 5K race courses in Pensacola: the Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot. Starting and finishing in Seville Square, be prepared to show off your wildest turkey trot as you take to the streets of Downtown Pensacola the morning of Thanksgiving, Nov. 24 from 6:30 to 7:30 am. This year’s race will benefit MANNA Food Bank; if you bring three non-perishable food items, you will receive a free Turkey Trot t-shirt (and you’ll let everyone know you ran for a special cause). Items that are needed include breakfast foods, canned fruit, spaghetti sauce and noodles, rice, peanut butter and canned chicken. Also, don’t miss the post-race party and celebration at the pavilion in Seville Square. Registration is $25 from now until Nov. 22. Packet pick ups will be on Nov. 23 at Running Wild from 1 to 4 pm. Find out more and register online today at werunwild.com. Gobble gobble!

“We love doing good things for the community and we’ve had our eye on doing a permanent mural for Pensacola for a long time.”

For a few years now, Ashton Howard and Evan Levin have been brainstorming on the perfect concept for an impactful, large-scale public mural. This month, as part of a special live painting event with the Foo Foo Festival, the creative duo are putting their minds and brushes together to complete a massive mural that will span the length of the Jefferson Street parking garage. “We wanted to make an impact,” said Evan Levin. “We love doing good things for the community and we’ve had our eye on doing a permanent mural for Pensacola for a long time.” According to Ashton and Evan, the mural will tell the story of Pensacola through 6 | DOWNTOWNCROWD.COM

its depiction of local landmarks such as the Pensacola Lighthouse and Fort Pickens, along with well-known icons like the Blue Angels and significant figures from our area’s Spanish roots like Tristan DeLuna. “To tell the story of Pensacola, we realized we had to include main icons that are part of our city’s history,” said Ashton Howard. “We’re a coastal community, so we really wanted to represent the city in the best way possible with recognizable landmarks and coastal scenery. But, once we start painting, I think we’ll have a lot of fun expanding off the original idea by adding more elements that organically come to us as we work.” The 3,000-squarefoot mural will stretch

A MURAL FOR THE MASSES BY DAWN GRESKO across the entire eastside wall of the Jefferson Street parking garage. LED lights have been installed so the mural remains illuminated throughout the night. Plus, the lights create an exhibit-like ambiance that further highlights the mural’s many facets and features. Murals are nothing new to Ashton, who has worked on pieces for the walls of restaurants and surf shops along the

West Coast in California, and painting comes naturally to Evan—who is an alumnus of Ringling College of Art and Illustration. Plus, the two have collaborated in the past on the smaller-scale mural for Foo Foo Fest 2015 called “Fly Like Foo Foo Fest.” The art featured a pair of giant wings, which passerbys could pose in front of for photo mementos. Ashton and Evan

worked on the concept for the mural over the course of several months, passing emails back and forth with Photoshop files for the other to tweak, as well as meeting together to collaborate and make changes on the same computer screen. Did we mention the mural will be painted entirely by hand? That’s right, no spray cans or graffiti art here. The artists will be using strictly brushes and rollers to apply an incredibly long-lasting exterior acryllic paint by Nova Color. Since the mural is intended to be a permanent installation, Ashton and Evan had to consider how to address and prevent the adverse effects of harsh weather and natural wear over

time. Thus, they came to the solution of using paints by Nova Color—a company that has been around since the 1950s. In fact, Nova Color paints were golden standards for old billboards during a time when all content on billboards was painted by hand. Other equipment the artists will use include a 40-foot Boomlift for hard-to-reach areas of the wall, and they plan to complete the mural over the course of eight weeks. In the future, be on the lookout for the artists to release a special timelapse sequence from when the garage wall was still brick all the way through to completion. Throughout the whole process, GoPros and drones have snapped photos of the various stages of painting, and already 10,000 photos have been shot of the wall being primed. When it’s time for Foo Foo, don’t forget to check out the one-of-akind live painting event and pay homeage to this mural for the masses. Starting Nov. 3, you can expect to see the two artists doing what they do best anywhere from 9 to 5 on Monday through Fridays.

A Novel Idea

Turn off the TV and you’ll have plenty of time. You have to set a schedule for writing. Set off time and treat it like a job.

To get you started on your journey, here are some writing prompts that may ignite your best-selling novel: •

An old cemetery is excavated to make way for a new development. Underneath each grave is a tunnel leading straight down.

•

You are the only eyewitness to a crime that even you don’t truly understand. Both as witness protection and as an aid to the case, you team up with a special agent from the FBI. What was it you saw and how do you help to solve the crime together.

•

A boy who ran from home after revealing a scandalous family secret that should have been kept under lock and key. Now a man, fifteen years later, he’s returned home only to discover that there is still unrest after his plaguing mishap.

•

Write about a relationship that is genuine and passionate but doesn’t work out in the end, either because tragedy strikes or because circumstances separate the characters and they cannot be together.

•

Three people are on a road trip together and pick up a hitchhiker. What happens?

•

She opened her apartment door to find hundreds of roses. She knew they were from him; he had found her.

By Malorie Eagles Do you have a novel idea burning inside of you? This November, let the torch of inspiration guide you to put pen to paper and set your most creative ideas free. November is National Novel Writing Month, or affectionately known as NaNoWriMo by the writing community. NaNoWriMo pushes novice and professional writers alike to achieve their dream of writing a novel. Their mission statement says it all: “National Novel Writing Month believes in the transformational power of creativity. We provide the structure, community, and encouragement to help people find their voices, achieve creative goals, and build new worlds—on and off the page.” Participants are challenged to write a 50,000-word novel between Nov. 1 and Nov. 30 at 11:59 pm. NaNoWriMo encourages writers to write 1,667 words per day during the 30 day contest in order to stay on track. The 50,000 word mark is what distinguishes a novel from a novella. There is no limit to how any people can win NaNoWriMo, so everyone who completes their novel from scratch in November wins the honor of being a NaNoWriMo champion. Every year, thousands of aspiring writers from around the globe join the NaNoWriMo website to harness the support and motivation that the forums provide. Forums connect participants to other writers in their area who are facing the same array of challenges. Members can also find information about local writeins to get some face time with others in the writing community. Pep Talks, or inspirational letters from well-known authors, are delivered to members’ inboxes throughout the month and are designed to keep writers motivated. This year’s Pep Talk authors include Alaya Dawn Johnson, Alexander Chee, Daniel José Older, Jenny Han, and Maggie Stiefvater. Those who need a little extra inspiration (or procrastination) can check out the Pep Talk Archives to read letters from Lemony Snicket, Neil Gaiman, Meg Cabot, and more. Pensacola is home to a writing inspiration of its own. Nic Schuck holds many titles in the Pensacola community: husband, father, educator, entrepreneur, and as of September 2016, published novelist. Native Moments follows the adventure of Sanch Murray on a surf trip to Costa Rica after the death of his brother. Here are some tips from Schuck about how to stay motivated throughout the writing and publication process: 8 | DOWNTOWNCROWD.COM

Don’t reverse Hemingway’s advice of “Write drunk, edit sober.” Definitely be sober when editing.

Socialize. Get out and create new stories.

Rejection is part of being a writer. How to deal with rejection? Ignore it. It’s easier said than done. But just ignore it. Move on and keep writing. Also, what makes me feel better, I go on Amazon and read all the one star reviews my favorite authors have received. It’s really great for the ego to see how many people out there think Cormac McCarthy or Ernest Hemingway are horrible writers.

Ray Bradbury’s advice for getting published is what finally got me published. I’ll paraphrase: Take all your rejection letters and start covering your walls with them. Before you cover all four walls of your first room, somebody will have said yes. I was going to do this. I had saved up 76 rejection letters. I hadn’t got to the point of printing them out yet when Barbara Terry of Waldorf Publishing replied that she would like to see more of my manuscript.

MONTHLY CITY LEADER INTERVIEW

AN INTERVIEW WITH CURT MORSE, NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF DOWNTOWN IMPROVEMENT BOARD. BY JOSH NEWBY

M

eet Curt Morse, the new executive director of the Downtown Improvement Board, a quasi-governmental agency charged with promoting and enhancing the area as a vibrant cultural and commercial destination. Morse received four of five votes from the board, cementing his role as the new champion of all things Downtown. He has lived in Pensacola since 2004 and has experience owning and managing small businesses, as well as serving on the boards of various community organizations. Downtown Crowd caught up with him to discuss his vision, his challenges, and how he views the DIB as a membership organization that should be more focused on its constituents. So what do you feel the greatest challenge facing the DIB is? That question resonates with everyone I’ve spoken to. You know, communication is always the very first point of business, and I don’t believe the DIB as an organization has done a great job communicating with its constituents. This is a membership organization in a membership economy. The people that the DIB serves have chosen to be members by being in the district. They pay a fee of two mills of property tax, so we need to be communicating back to the membership so that they understand the value of choosing to be here. I want to reinforce that regularly. It seems to me a very obvious objective, but it’s not one that I think has been effectively done. What cities are you looking to for inspiration? The product that we have is love. I love this city and I love reinforcing that love of our city. We need to attract those that want to participate in this great place, and remind people who chose us to begin with why they made that choice. The people who are here, they’re here whether they’re newcomers or multi-generational residents. So we need to be continually selling that product of love. I look to cities like New Orleans, Charleston, Wiliamsburg and St. Augustine. Those cities have a historic aspect that is part of people’s great attachment to those places. I don’t believe we’ve tapped into our history deep enough to leverage that yet. How do you plan to navigate tension with City Council and other local government entities? I come in here with no bone to pick. Councilman Bare and I actually go to church together. I see no reason why executive directors can’t have diplomatic skills. I’m a small business guy. I live and die by customers and I’m driven by customer care and satisfaction, delivering on their expectations, so when I communicate and work with the public sector, I want to establish the best common relationship that we can. And you’re not gonna make everyone happy. You have to pick and choose your priorities and values and be the best for your constituents. I go to bat for them. I believe if we go out there and start communicating that message, the naysayers will ultimately go away, because we’ll be staying true to our core. What is your vision for the city? That’s a tough one to answer until I really get in there. But I will tell you I’ll be thinking like the business owners. There’s so much being done right now behind the scenes that people may not realize. You know, these exciting projects take years to come to fruition. I want to support the guys who have the means and desire to see the city evolve into this cosmopolitan place. Those things are exciting and I

want the same thing. I want to see empty space utilized. I don’t want to squander opportunity. And I’d even look at expanding the reach of the DIB to encompass even more. I don’t want to grow just to grow, but I do want to grow if we can further satisfy our current customers and potential new customers. The people who were here before made substantial inroads to where we are today. I have a vision of building on that and I want to execute on that. I want to take the board’s vision and make sure we’re both traveling in the same direction. I am inspired by this 12-year love affair my family and I have had with Pensacola, so now it’s all about how can I give back? I want our change to be meaningful and measurable. What do you see as the DIB’s primary mission? You know, Gallup did a survey of 25 cities and 43,000 people several years ago and discovered a handful of attributes that created attachment to a city. One is social offerings. People want events, they want vibrant space, and they want great social places for people to mix and mingle. Another one is openness; openness for all races, disciplines and more. And finally beauty and aesthetics: pretty parks, public art, putting effort into how we look and making sure we look our best. Those are the issues that are important to the constituents and those are the issues that are important to me.

OH SHIP!

PHOTOS COURTESY OF UWF

Tristan de Luna may have lived five centuries ago, but the story of his expedition to modernday Pensacola is still unfolding before us in new and exciting ways. Late last month, the University of West Florida (UWF) archeology program announced the discovery of a third shipwreck from de Luna’s 16th century Spanish fleet. This comes less than a year after a landmark discovery of Luna’s terrestrial colony in a Pensacola neighborhood, marking the earliest ever multi-year European settlement in the country. The most recent shipwreck was found, perhaps not surprisingly, near the first two, in Pensacola Bay near Emmanuel Point I, found in 1992, and II, discovered in 2006. Hints of the third shipwreck surfaced in June 2016, and the Combined Archeological Field Methods course continued to work on it during the summer field school. “We chose a shallow spot with a sandy bottom to dive to give the students a break after we’d been in another part of the bay where it was deeper and darker,” said Dr. Greg Cook, assistant professor of anthropology and principal investigator of the Emanuel

12 | DOWNTOWNCROWD.COM

Point II shipwreck, in a press release. “We thought there probably wasn’t anything there, but had found an anomaly when we surveyed and decided to let the students have fun investigating it. Within two minutes, the divers came up and said they felt stones with their probes. Later that afternoon, the first artifacts were found. I said that day, ‘You know, it shouldn’t be this easy.’” They discovered ballast stones, iron concretions and articulated hull of the ship which included frames and hull planking, as well as some ceramics. They will continue to study the site through March of next year to try and determine the type of wood used to build the ship. All three of these ships were lost in the 1559 hurricane of Pensacola Bay. According to UWF, the Luna expedition included 1,500 soldiers, colonists, slaves and Aztec Indians who traveled in 11 ships from Veracruz, Mexico, to Pensacola to begin the Spanish colonization of the northern Gulf Coast. The hurricane hit Pensacola one month after they arrived, sinking many of their ships and devastating their food supplies. After two years, the remnants of the colony were rescued by Spanish ships and returned to Mexico. “Finding the third ship is highly significant because it confirms we have the whole fleet in Pensacola Bay,” said Dr. John Worth in a press release. “The historical documents say that two ships were loaded, ready to go back to Spain. As long as we had just two shipwrecks, it could mean that the rest of the fleet was somewhere else. Now we know we really do have the fleet, not just two ships that happened to be from the fleet.”

You know what time it is! (And if you don’t, let us clue you in). It’s Foo Foo time! The 12 day celebration, spanning from Nov. 3 through 14, encompasses everything that is great about Pensacola and compresses it into almost two weeks of fun, culture, food, arts and general wonderment. Whether you’re an avid exerciser, a passionate foodie, a lover of music, or you just love people watching, there is something for you--we guarantee it! As thousand of tourists descend upon our shores and experience the charming brick roads and surprisingly bevy of options our small town offers, you can breathe a self-contented sigh that you opted to live here before it was cool. You were here when there was nary a bar in sight or a pop-up dance performance to be found. And now that we have those things in plenty, you feel a certain pride for choosing so wisely, so early. But you’re generous! (As all Pensacolians are). You don’t mind the late-adopters who call this place home for 12 days out of the year, because you know that when they depart, they’ll be dreaming of tepid temperatures and late nights in whatever cold, northern hamlet they return to. So take pride in your city! Enjoy the festivities! But don’t forget to help out a lost tourist or adrift traveler if they need it. Part of what makes Pensacola so great is you. By Josh Newby

In which we unfairly judge upcoming attractions based solely on their trailers. By Josh Newby

ARRIVAL RELEASE DATE: Nov. 11 CAST: Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner, Forest Whitaker DOCTOR STRANGE RELEASE DATE: Nov. 4 CAST: Benedict Cumberbatch, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Rachel McAdams What I got from the preview: Tell me if you’ve heard this one before. A young, goodlooking narcissist who happens to be incredibly talented in a particular industry has a neardeath experience that causes him to use his talents for good even as evil forces attempt to foil his redemption. Throw in some Inception, and you have the essence of Stephen Strange, M.D. Most notable for: Yet another entry into the growing catalogue of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Doctor Strange advertises itself as a slight departure from the comic book themes we’re accustomed to. To their credit, Doctor Strange is what you might consider B-grade Marvel, but so was Ant-Man. Unqualified critical observation: Personally, I find Marvel’s stories and narrative arches tired, overdone, lacking inspiration and wholly predictable. Through it all, though, I have to give them props for being entertaining and deftly weaving together individual stories into a larger cinematic canvas. It’s fast food cinema, not that there’s anything wrong with that, but I would hope for more from both the fall movie season and one of the most profitable studios on the planet.

TROLLS RELEASE DATE: Nov. 4 CAST: Anna Kendrick, Zooey Deschanel, Justin Timberlake What I got from the preview: In this vividly animated musical adventure, an eternally happy troll and her joyless companion set out on an adventure narrated by mashed-up pop songs to return security and glee to their threatened community. As they endure trials and tribulations while exploring their great, big world, they sing both to process their setbacks and escape them. I’ll admit the color-vomit palate and tie-dyed hair is a bit distracting, but underneath it all, I believe lies a story that will be truly moving. Most notable for: Is this movie seriously not out yet? It seems I’ve heard the promotional song, Can’t Stop the Feeling, for months now. But seriously, Dreamworks is great at nothing if not broad animated comedies featuring a hugely talented and diverse cast. Unqualified critical observation: At first you may think this is simply a knockoff of Happy Feet, and you’d probably be forgiven for thinking that. There are a lot of similar themes and methods, but the cast’s voices are just as infectious as their human counterparts, and in a season full of serious dramas, this might be a nice interlude from the other Oscar bait.

What I got from the preview: A renowned linguist is recruited by the military to help translate messages broadcast to UFOs throughout the world. She enters the objects once every 18 hours, attempting to build a relationship and understand their communications, even as more ships appear throughout the world and other countries threaten to destroy these possibly peaceful intruders. With calm, assured acting and a story that makes you appreciate the finer nuances of language and communication, this movie is not your typical sci-fi alien thriller. Most notable for: Denis Villeneuve (Sicario, Prisoners) has made a name

Fi l m

for himself as a contemplative filmmaker who makes movies about complex subjects in a manner that appeals to the masses. This is his most ambitious and tricky project to date. Unqualified critical observation: With a plot that sounds like a 21st century Contact and one of the most giftedly subtle actresses of her generation, I think Arrival will be the thinking man’s alien movie we’ve all been waiting for. With just enough emotional resonance to hit home but not bury us in schmaltz--and adequate philosophical and technological themes to perplex and inspire--I really am putting all my eggs in this basket.

FANTASTIC BEASTS AND WHERE TO FIND THEM

RELEASE DATE: Nov. 17 CAST: Eddie Redmayne, Ezra Miller, Colin Farrell, Zoe Kravitz What I got from the preview: Let’s go back, not just to JK Rowling’s Wizarding World, but back in time to seven decades before Harry Potter and his friends defeated Voldemort. A young writer named Newt Scamander travels to New York, but soon his magical beasts are uncaged from his briefcase and wreak havoc on the city. Scamander must team up with his muggle friends to recapture these fantastic beasts in a setting that unquestionably shares the same universe as Harry Potter, yet is distinct and unique in its own, classic way. Most notable for: We all knew it had to happen. The Harry Potter universe is too magical and lucrative for its own good. I suppose if there had to be a spinoff, this is the way to do it, with a book inside a book inside the Wizarding World. Unqualified critical observation: Looking at the various facets of a film--music, set design, costuming, production, cinematography, and more--perhaps no franchise is as instantly recognizable from a world-building perspective as Harry Potter’s. And for good reason, the stories lift the spirits, the action is fluid and easily tracked, and the atmosphere invites you to participate. In case you didn’t know, I’m very excited.

MOANA RELEASE DATE: Nov. 23 CAST: Dwayne Johnson, Alan Tudyk, Jemaine Clement, Auli’i Cravalho What I got from the preview: This legend brought to life concerns a navigator of the high seas team up with the demi-god Maui, who together set sail for a fabled island. Don’t focus too much on the story, though, and just revel in the animation, which may be the most beautiful and colorful ever committed to film. Seriously, any frame from the trailer would make a gorgeous screen-saver and I’m sure the preview is playing nonstop on TVs in Best Buys everywhere. The artists and technicians are the true stars of this movie which also features a pretty great cast. Most notable for: With a fair bit of controversy that I haven’t paid attention to, Moana arrives in theaters amidst calls for greater diversity and inclusion in film. With brilliant spectacle and a soundtrack with a heavy south Pacific influence, I would say this movie succeeds. Unqualified critical observation: Ever since they made the full-throated transition from traditional 2D animation to 3D, Disney has been killing it with films like Frozen and Zootopia, which are endlessly watchable, amazing to behold and stay with you for a long time. I hope Moana continues the trend. It certainly deserves to.
