Do you feel that? It’s a distinctly wet, sticky, warm sensation crawling up your back and extending into every extremity until your sole goal in life becomes finding relief of some sort. It’s summer in Florida! But, just because the heat is oppressive and the humidity swamp-like doesn’t mean you can’t find ways to cool down, refresh and have fun in Pensacola. So, give your complaints a proverbial cold shower and discover the options Downtown offers for the sticky and sun-kissed among us. First, there’s a new way to beat the heat in the form of Bubba’s Sweet Spot, a forthcoming ice cream parlor and candy shop courtesy of pro-golfer Bubba Watson. The place is like the real-life brainchild of candy industry titan Willy Wonka, and it promises to refresh and cater to a previously ignored demographic unlike anything else quite can.

June Not to be undone by anyone, Joe Abston, owner of Hopjacks and The Tin Cow, has opened a new taco joint, Taco Mez, in the heart of Downtown at the site of the old Twenty-One West. Taco Mez is kitschy and delicious and brimming with authentic creativity. Don’t let this one go to waste, Pensacola. Abston has hit on something truly remarkable, and the dozens of different types of tequila certainly isn’t hurting anything. Other staples of summer life in the South include grilling and life on the water, and in this issue we are featuring both in spades. We talked to local experts about what’s new in the world of burgers (mac n’ cheese, peanut butter, broccoli, oh my!), as well as new and exciting ways to stay cool and active on our beautiful waterways this season. Also in this issue is a preview of the annual Life’s A Dance benefit for Covenant Hospice. Last year, I had the opportunity to meet Willow Shields, who plays Primrose in The Hunger Games franchise. She’s a talented and beautiful young actress, one of many famous people the event attracts each year for a great cause. Don’t distress, Pensacola. The summer may be old hat for many of us, but remember that this is the reason for our booming tourism economy and the best excuse there is for lazy hours on the beach. This is when we--and the sun above us--shine brightest.

owntown Pensacola’s diverse dining scene has really expanded in recent years. A range of ethnicities is represented, as are a spectrum of price points. What the area lacks, though, are tasty and budget-conscious options for breaking through that 2:30 pm office feeling or grabbing a quick cup of joe from your car on the way into work. Luckily, like many other shortcomings that businessman and real estate
Bubba’s Sweet Spot has been in the works for a while, ever since Rishy visited other cities and noticed that most downtown areas have a child-centric retail and food service space. She thought Downtown Pensacola would really benefit from a touch of childlike whimsy, with bright decorations and bold, local flavors. Professional golfer Bubba Watson wanted in, and Bubba’s Sweet Spot was born. With an opening slated for July 1, it won’t be long until all Downtown denizens can enjoy fresh ice cream, gravity-fed candy, a centerpiece lollipop tree, fresh-dipped fruit like chocolate-covered strawberries, hand-dipped apples and more. A little old-school 50s diner and little bit new-age Willy Wonka-like whimsy come together to make Downtown’s next hotspot for dates, a treat after the ball game, or every child’s dream come true. “We’re still working out some specifics like the different

developer Quint Studer has identified, these issues will be remedied in no time. It is no secret that Studer and his wife Rishy have transformed the Downtown area. From his purchase of Five Sisters Blues Café and development of the Bodacious Olive and Bodacious Brew to his ownership of the Blue Wahoos baseball team and actualization of apartment living off of Jefferson in the old PNJ building, Quint
and Rishy have a knack for making the area more entertaining and accessible for all ages and incomes. He is continuing that trend with two new ventures: Bubba’s Sweet Spot, a candy and ice cream store in partnership with golfer Bubba Watson, and Bodacious On-the-Go,
candies and interior decorations, but we expect it to be really fun and popping once it opens,” said Maryjane Gardner, media and public relations manager for the Blue Wahoos. “We’ll soon be putting in equipment to make sure we really cultivate that classic candy store feel.” The location was originally slated to be on the corner of Main and Baylen, but as that spot was recently approved for the other forthcoming shippingcontainer coffee project, called Bodacious On-the-Go, Bubba’s Sweet Spot has moved to 412 S. Palafox, right in the heart of the SoGo district. “This new location is about 1,000 square feet, which is just perfect for us,” said Jonathan Griffith, president of the Blue Wahoos and of Studer Entertainment and Retail. “It made more sense to put it in this new location, and we’re excited.”
a quick-grab coffee option made out of economical and industrial shipping containers. These ideas may be well-worn in other cities across the country, but they are truly innovative for this area, which has traditionally struggled to capture the attention of middle-income
For those wanting a slightly more mature jolt of energy, the Bodacious Brew is opening what amounts to a drive-through satellite location just a block away from its current residence. At the corner of Baylen and Main will soon be a walk-up or drive-through locally roasted coffee option, with some outdoor seating and games for kids to boot. Rishy Studer said the concept for the On-theGo came from customers who expressed an interest in drive-through coffee downtown. “Ever since we’ve opened, we’ve had customers ask if we were going to add a drivethrough, for those times when you’re in a rush or the weather’s not great for walking to a coffee shop,” said Rishy. “So, we decided it was time to do this.” Studer said the concept would include not only a drive-through but also additional patio seating and
families, as well as it has high-wealth power-brokers. Both locations will go south of Government Street in an area known affectionately as SoGo. The square blocks have seen a renaissance in recent years much like their neighbors to the north.
a kids’ area with games and interactive landscaping. “We want this to be a place where people can not only drive up and get a coffee, but, also sit and enjoy downtown, while their children play,” she said. “We’ll be roasting our own beans as well, so we think that will add another element to the whole downtown experience.” The containers were based on what the Studers had seen while doing research on other urban drive-through projects. They expect construction to start early summer and hope to be completed and open for business by the end of
2016. For those worried about traffic backup on Main, Travis Peterson of Impact Campaigns, who has been working with the Studers on this project, said there is nothing at all to worry about. “The traffic flow has been engineered to ensure we don’t back anything up,” said Peterson. With these exciting new developments, Pensacola moves one small step closer to achieving marketability for all age groups and incomes as it becomes a better place to live, work and play for all.

ometimes, you just need a taco—and some tequila to wash it down with couldn’t hurt. The sumptuous food is comforting, delicious, portable and customizable, so why not outsource your next taco night with the hottest new joint in Downtown, Taco Mez? The taqueria and tequileria is located at 21 W. Romana, in the location of the old Twenty-One West. The restaurant is the brainchild of Joe Abston, owner and operator of such Downtown staples as Hopjack’s, The Tin Cow, and Pot Roast & Pinot. With this latest venture, he brings his signature twist of classic dishes to the salivating mouths of tortilla- and guac-lovers everywhere. The idea came to Abston after he visited Mexico for a Day of the Dead celebration. The regional tastes of the area instantly inspired him, and, after taking some
tortilla-making classes, he fell in love with the flavor possibilities and realized that this culinary resource was missing Downtown. After months of planning and tweaking, Taco Mez was born. Abston and his team are quick to point out that this is not Tex-Mex. Pensacola already offers plenty of options for those who like their Mexican food with a distinctly Southwest flavor. Taco Mez is something different entirely. In the same way he reinvented the burger with Tin Cow and southern comfort food with Pot Roast & Pinot, Abston is resuscitating everyone’s favorite ethnic food. Taco Mez currently offers please-all menu items like moderateappetite street tacos with chicken, pork, chorizo and more. But they are also inviting patrons to try something a little different, like specialty tacos featuring triggerfish,
octopus and chilled blue crab. Other southof-the-border staples like soup and tableside guac are coming soon. Remember the first time you tried Hopjack’s signature duck fries? Maybe it was a side with a pizza or an anchor to ground you after a late night of drinking. Regardless, it was likely life-changing. Well, Taco Mez is offering up a similarly unique new addiction—pork fat fries. Top it off with some cheese and guacamole and you may have just found your new favorite Downtown food. For those who do not care for Mexican but still want to enjoy the Southwest street style of the restaurant, Taco Mez will offer more American fare like burgers and wings, as well. And we have not even touched on the adult beverages. With a drink list that includes 75 different types of tequila, as well as some of the
best cocktails you’re likely to sip north of the border, Taco Mez is replete with options for fun of the more mature persuasion. The location, which is slightly off of Palafox, has been problematic in the past, but Abston and his team are confident that Taco Mez will serve up enough of a temptation to lure people off the main drag. “Joe was here before there was anything Downtown, so he knows a thing or two about creating an atmosphere and further developing the boundaries of the area,” said Renee Legere, who handles marketing for Abston’s family of restaurants. “And with free parking just two blocks from the location, there’s really no reason for people to not come out and have a good time.” Taco Mez also features a revolutionary answer to the age-old
problem of never having enough time for lunch. With their Mex Express option, time-pressed patrons can sit at one of a handful of designated tables and receive fast service, a to-go cup, and a check that comes with the food, which is out in no time. The busy attorneys and business-owners of the area have no excuse to not enjoy some delicious Mexican on their timecrunched lunch, and neither do you. Mex Express is available from 11 to 3 Monday through Friday. With vegetarian options and an atmosphere situated comfortably between street party and upscale restaurant, Taco Mez is guaranteed the same followership that Hopjack’s and Tin Cow have created. So take a walk off the beaten path, Pensacola; your new favorite restaurant is here. DOWNTOWNCROWD.COM | 7
A First-Class Director
MONTHLY ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT INTERVIEW
AN INTERVIEW WITH FIRST CITY ARTS CENTER’S MEREDITH DOYEN · BY DAWN GRESKO Meredith Doyen of First City Art Center is a Jill of all trades. She began her career at the center three years ago, when she became its first full-time employee who managed juggling the responsibilities of cleaning, painting, programs, interns, and more. Today, as the center’s executive director, she’s not only responsible for day-to-day tasks, but she also works on all types of special projects, collaborates with several committees to ensure finances and facilities are managed efficiently, and she is in charge of both grant writing and creating outreach opportunities for First City Art Center (FCAC). In fact, Meredith created the Glass Arts Fellowship in order to get a professional glass blower and help raise the level of the glass blowing shop. While Meredith neither draws nor paints as much as she once did, she still utilizes the creative side of her brain for figuring out solutions to daily dilemmas at the center. Downtown Crowd caught up with this first-class executive director to discuss her vision for FCAC’s future and what she’s looking forward to most this year at the center. Name one thing about yourself that others may not know and you’d like to share. My mother was an artist and the best person I will ever have known. She was a non-stop volunteer, and she is the reason I work in the not-for-profit world. You have to have a service heart, and I have her alone to thank for that. Describe a typical day in your role as executive director. Ha! One of the fun things about this job is that every day is different. It can be a lot like a circus some days with students coming in and out, hosting fieldtrips, and preparing for either an event or campus rental or showing someone around the center for the first time. I don’t spend too much time sitting down and that kind of variety makes this a really fun job. You simply cannot get bored here! Past or present, what has been one of your favorite FCAC workshops or events and why? You just can’t beat the Hot Glass Cold Brew series of events we do each year. From December to May we offer four events drawing around 600 people each time. These are fundraisers that help cover our overhead expenses, plus patrons get cool, handmade glass or pottery cups, a meal, drinks and an everevolving myriad of entertainment and demonstrations. What are some plans for FCAC a year or so into the future that you are most excited to see in action? We are very excited to be working on our Impact 100 expansion project in which we will be expanding our Ceramics Department to increase our capacity. This will also allow us to create a whole new glass program with fusing, casting and slumping in a new kiln shop. The grant also allowed us to create two handicap accessible bathrooms in the Creative Warehouse. We should be finishing up the building addition in the next three months and we couldn’t be more excited.
What do you enjoy most about being part of FCAC? The people! We have the coolest variety of people involved here. We are able to attract visiting artists, workshop teachers, students and volunteers from all over the place. I love hearing about everyone’s path to art and how art has changed and affected their lives. Any upcoming events at FCAC you would like to highlight, or news you’re happy to share? This summer our favorite thing is the Creatisphere summer art camp, because it is the ultimate summer art experience for students ages 8 to 14 who want to create. After that, our next big event will be the Pumpkin Patch in October, which is our biggest fundraiser and we will have over 2,000 glass and pottery handmade pumpkins this year. Then in November, FCAC will be participating in the FooFoo Festival with our week-long Day of the Dead festival. What else should our readers know about FCAC? I see FCAC as being important in the region for several reasons. For one, we have contributed to the economy and the diversity of the city with our unique and spectacular events. People have told me they feel like they are in a “big city” when they come to an event here. The education programs we have here are so good that we have people who take classes over and over just to be a part of the program. Our volunteers are the most enjoyable group of people to be around. These are people who understand the value of the arts and appreciate the community we are building here. I am endlessly proud of the staff we have hired and what we are doing at the center.

through dancing. The performance will benefit Covenant Care, so come out and enjoy an evening of lively dance while supporting the local organization. Fred Astaire Dance Studio owners Dawn Westberry and Victor Luna are presenting this spectacular event at the Saenger Theatre on Friday, June 17th. The live show will feature cast members from ABC’s Dancing with the Stars including Toni Dovaloni, Sharna Burgess, Emma Slater, and Sasha Farber. It is sure to be an extraordinary and memorable evening. Pensacola’s very own Carey King (Studer Group), Dr. Luis Navas (Medical Center Clinic), Jason Crawford (Intelligent Retinal Imaging Systems), John Lark Herron (John Lark Herron Insurance, LLC), John McLean (Pensacola Ice Flyers), Karen Sindel (District 1 Commissioner Candidate), Laura Hussey (WEAR ABC3), and Nicole Stacey (Pensacola Beach Chamber of Commerce) will partner with professional instructors from the Fred Astaire Dance Studio to perform a variety of dances. These local celebrities will also be competing in a fundraising competition. The “People’s Choice Award” will go to the local celebrity dancer who raises the most money. You can make a donation through their page at lifesadance.kintera.org to place a vote for your favorite dancer. Pensacola Beach Area Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Nicole Stacey is excited to take part in the local competition to raise money for Covenant Care which she says is “not only an organization that we help on a regular bases, but it’s near and dear to our hearts.” Covenant Care challenges each of the local dancers to raise $2500, but Stacey says “the community is so giving, especially when it comes to a great cause like covenant, so I’m hopeful that we will be able to raise just a little bit more.” According to Covenant Care Development Manager Angie Schlosser, the event typically raises $50,000. Nearly $30,000 of the donations are raised by the local celebrities who compete in the event. Local sponsors are also an important part of raising money for the benefit. All funds raised by Life’s a Dance go toward Covenant Care’s mission. Well known throughout Pensacola, the non-for-profit organization provides patients with a wide range of health and support services. These unfunded and non-reimbursed services include bereavement support, children’s support, spiritual care, and charity care. Events such as Life’s a Dance allow Covenant Care to continue to provide excellent care to those affected by life-limiting illnesses. WEAR TV-3 news anchor Sue Straughn and Cat Country 98.7 personality Brent Lane will host the eighth annual event. Seating is limited. Tickets are $35, $50, and $75. SUMMER GRILLIN’ It’s that time of year again. Cold-weather comfort food gives way to hearty, substantial backyard staples. There are few things more idyllically summer than the smell of grilling meat, the greasy crunch of a medium-rare burger, and a couple cold ones enjoyed over a picnic table or a Wahoos game. It seems like every family has their own secret recipe—a time-honored concoction handed down through the generations like a quarter-pound keepsake. (Soak the meat in water for a half hour? Are you crazy? Wrap the beef in aluminum foil for the full length of the cook-time? Are you mad?) Every tradition needs a rilingup, though, and luckily Downtown Crowd spoke with some of the area’s greatest burger experts to learn what ingredients the grill gods will be using this summer. Now, we know change is hard, but just try dispensing with your lettuce and tomatoes for one meal and try these new-wave accoutrements. We promise you won’t regret it. If you love it, pass the idea off as your own and enjoy the worship you receive from those who don’t read the Downtown Crowd. If you hate it, well, at least you’ll have tried something new. By Josh Newby. What? You thought nutritional value and can’t-resist taste were mutually exclusive? You couldn’t be more wrong. Cheesesoaked broccoli provides the perfect occasional crunch to your otherwise moist burger creation. Breakfast for dinner makes a comeback when you had a sunny-side-up egg between the meat patty and bun. Cook the egg before heading outside to grill, then throw it on the beef with a minute to go, and you’ve got yourself a perfectly hot egg-andburger delight.
For that perfect medium-rare tenderness, cook over a well-oiled grill for three minutes on each side, then transfer to indirect heat for an additional two minutes on each side.
Make sure you’re upto-date on your cardio, because adding mac n’ cheese to a burger is not for the faint of heart. It can get messy real quick, not to
mention all the cheese you’re flooding your arteries with. If you can handle it, though, you’ll never go back. Extra points for pepper jack cheese. Peanut-butter is definitely not for everyone, but if you like a salty surprise, lather up the inside of your buns with it like you would mayonnaise, and let the contrasting tastes play a game of Who’s More Delicious in your mouth.
The mild poblano pepper adds just the right kick to an otherwise played-out burger.
Plus, it’s a fruit, so you could presumably have a burger featuring all six food groups.
Adding onions to a burger is nothing new, but use shallots and all of a sudden you have a subtly sweet difference with a hint of garlic. And isn’t that what all burgers really need?

As another special addition, for those who might not have the taste for suds, the Fish House will have two spirits tables set up to feature a number of small production vodkas, bourbons and rums. Also, so you’re not worried about the drive home, the Fish House is offering special wristbands for those designated drivers in your group. The $10 wristbands ensure they get a bottomless supply of soft drinks and live entertainment. Speaking of entertainment, there will be live music on stage including a performance by DLP—a local
cover band who are regulars at the Fish House, who also perform for other communitywide events like the Pelican Drop. If you’re still looking for a reason to delve into debauchery, remember you’re drinking for a cause: a portion of the ticket proceeds will be going to benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Florida. Tickets will be available through June 18 and may be purchased online, or in person at the Tackle Shop— the Fish House’s gift and souvenir shop. At $30 per person, each ticket includes a souvenir beer glass along with full access to all beers, bourbons and other small production beverages.
So, when someone asks what you’re doing Father’s Day weekend, what do you tell them? You’re going fishing for beer! “This event is designed to allow the public to taste a large variety of handcrafted beers with an opportunity to sample a number of styles to determine preferences,” said Josh Goldman, Fish House beverage manager. “Beers from microbreweries, Pensacola Home Brewer’s Association, as well as craft and specialty bottled beers will be available for tasting.”

In which we unfairly judge upcoming attractions based solely on their trailers. By Josh Newby
FINDING DORY RELEASE DATE: June 17 CAST: Ellen DeGeneres, Albert Brooks, Idris Elba, Bill Hader, Diane Keaton POPSTAR: NEVER STOP NEVER STOPPING RELEASE DATE: June 3 CAST: Andy Samberg, Martin Sheen, Bill Hader, Jorma Taccone, Akiva Schaffer What I got from the preview: In the spirit of This Is Spinal Tap, this mockumentary about the rise and fall of an egotistical, loud-mouthed, talentless musician (Conner4Real) is chronicled in hilarious fashion by the Lonely Island guys. As he tries to reclaim his former celebrity, he enlists a team of publicists, managers, and a hologram of Adam Levine before ultimately discovering that the swag was within him all along. Most notable for: The Lonely Island has been the funniest comedy band on the planet for the better part of a decade. Each member has had solo success in some regard (though Andy Samberg is the obvious standout). Here, they get their well-deserved chance to parlay all that talent into some Conner4Real-level cheddar. Unqualified critical observation: I will laugh at this movie’s silly premise, it’s wacky execution, and its all-around stupid nature, because sometimes those are the things that hit the spot. If you’re wary of an Adam Sandler-type juvenile jock joint (or a Seth Rogenesque stoner comedy), fear not. This is absurdity at its most high-brow. Josh4Ever out.
WARCRAFT RELEASE DATE: June 10 CAST: Travis Fimmel, Ben Foster, Dominic Cooper, Paula Patton What I got from the preview: Grungey rock plays behind deep-voiced narration as we are introduced to a colony of humans whose kingdom has existed in relative peace for a long time. (Guess they don’t allow political discussions on Facebook). Apparently, this calm is on the brink of war when orcs flee their dying home in search of another and choose to invade the human land of Azeroth. I was following this trailer so well, but then a portal happened, and then some dragons, and I just got lost in the video game CGI of it all. Yikes. Most notable for: The massively popular online role-playing game finally(?) gets a big-screen adaptation in this equally massive exhibition of war, primal sensibilities, and possible racism. Unqualified critical observation: This movie will be the summer’s biggest bomb. With an estimated $100 million production budget, the film needs to make at least twice that to cover marketing and promotional costs. It will attract the gaming crowd, of course, and a few stragglers interested in seeing what all the fuss is about, but the core of moviegoers want something decidedly more human—either in nature or in emotion—and this spectacle promises neither.
What I got from the preview: It takes all of about three seconds for this wonderful trailer to pull me back into the beautiful, buoyant, colorful, and sweetly sentimental world of Nemo and his friends. This wholly unnecessary yet totally welcome sequel to the 2003 film finds the titular forgetful but lovable character on a quest to find her own family, and in the process enchants us all and reminds us that family—the ones you choose and the ones you don’t—is everything. Most notable for: It’s not an exaggeration to say that Finding Nemo changed animation in the same way Toy Story did. The vibrant environments and underwater physics had never been attempted in such a realistic yet dreamlike fashion before. I
Fi l m
hope this sequel does the same, and with largely the same cast and crew that made the first so memorable, I think my hope is well-placed. Unqualified critical observation: Pixar sequels are hit or miss. The Toy Story follow-ups were even better than the original, but then there’s the largely forgettable Cars sequel. Even if the story is meh, this is a film that just has to be experienced in theater, if only for the sweeping panoramic underwater vistas and the smooth, immersive ride the movies takes us on, in which the audience feels like underwater dwellers themselves.
FREE STATE OF JONES RELEASE DATE: June 24 CAST: Matthew McConaughey, Keri Russel, Gugu Mbatha-Raw What I got from the preview: This true Southern drama about a Confederate soldier who stood up to the powers that be after losing a friend on the battle field features McConaughey in full-drawl mode. It’s an unusual choice for a summer release, but this tale of heroism and freedom in the face of oppressive leadership and capitalistic principles is a story worth telling any time of year. Most notable for: McConaughey continues his dominance of crowd-pleasing blockbusters that are also impactful and profound. He was actually in lower Alabama area filming this movie a couple years ago, so keep your eyes peeled for any landscapes you may recognize, and maybe an anachronistic Flora-Bama! Unqualified critical observation: A welcome respite from the mass destruction, fastpaced action and sequel-heavy habits of summer, this quiet film still packs a punch of rebellion and adrenaline as it frames some of the most difficult issues of our time against a suspenseful story set during the Civil War. This will be a good one.
THE SHALLOWS RELEASE DATE: June 27 CAST: Blake Lively, Oscar Jaenada What I got from the preview: A surfer enjoying the isolated shores of an unknown island gets stranded atop an offshore rock when a shark kills her friend. With a badly injured leg and mounting heat, coupled with a lack of resources, she must use her wit and ingenuity to outsmart the circling predator. The trailer has a raw, hyperaware aesthetic to it, in which every natural sound is amplified and the dramatic tension is built using the blinding sun contrasted against the threatening depths. Most notable for: I’m a sucker for bottle movies with a limited cast. The most recent truly great example of this that I can recall is Locke, with Tom Hardy. It takes an enthralling story and a captivating lead to carry an entire movie. We’ll see if this film delivers. Unqualified critical observation: I’ll see this picture regardless, due to my aforementioned love of the genre and equally passionate regard for Lively, but I’m not expecting any glowing reviews or huge box office receipts. I also don’t much care for the beach in real life, so this may very well be the only exposure I have to the concept this summer.

Saenger Theatre Enhances the Patron Experience with New Hand Rails
AMIkids presents A Night of Comedy fundraiser with Alain Pierre-Louis and Success St. Fleur
22 | DOWNTOWNCROWD.COM
The historic Saenger Theatre opened on April 2, 1925. It was the first all-electric building in Pensacola, but it was piped for gas just in case electricity was a “passing fad.” Everything was carved by hand; like the deep curves in the columns surrounding the proscenium stage were made by the elbows of a master craftsman. The original Tiffany chandeliers still glamorously light the audience chamber. Built with all of the modern conveniences of its time, the Grand Dame of Palafox has been missing an important element for all these years—hand rails for the balcony aisles. The handrails were designed and created by Haute Metalworks in Pensacola and installed by Saenger Operations personnel. The entire project took about 6 weeks to complete.
For kids who need a second, third or even fourth chance, AMIkids provides the opportunity for rehabilitation, GED classes, workforce training and mentoring to help teens who have an aversion to criminal behavior avoid the revolving door of prison life. The non-profit is dedicated to helping troubled youth grow into responsible and productive citizens. The kids are referred to AMIkids by the Department of Juvenile Justice into one of two programs: the first, a day program that helps between 36 and 40 kids over three- and four-month periods; the second, a residential program at Corry Station with 26 beds that hosts teens for different time periods. “We’re sort of the last chance, so it’s this or jail,” said Alicia Shoulta, business manager for the local chapter. “Our aim is to end that cycle of criminal behavior. Often their parents have grown up in the system and the kids just follow in those footsteps.” The program also provides education like carpentry, food safety and more, for kids between the ages of 16 and 18. Unfortunately, funding is always an issue for these types of programs. Enter the Night of Comedy fundraiser, the first event of is kind in Pensacola, featuring comedian Alain Pierre-Louis, who has opened for Kevin Hart and Carlos Mencia and hit viral fame with his Rick Ross YouTube parodies. Also at the event is Success St. Fleur, who has been doing professional comedy for over a decade and has also had videos go viral on social media. Both performers are based out of Miami and are doing the show for free, with all profits going to AMIkids. The event is June 9 at 6 pm at 5Eleven Palafox. Tickets are $50 and include appetizers and a silent auction before the show starts at 7. The 125 tickets will most assuredly go quickly, so be sure to register at donate.amikids.org/pages/2016-amikidspensacola-a-night-of-comedy.
Cordova Lanes Hosts Fundraiser to Fight Child Abuse
Keller-Williams, LaBorde, and West Florida Law Host Ribbon-Cutting
Gulf Coast Kid’s House served over 3100 child abuse victims in 2015. After hearing this at a church gathering Steve Reynolds, owner of Cordova Lanes, wanted to do something to help those children and to prevent child abuse. “Stacey Kostevicki about broke my heart when she shared how that many children from our neighborhoods were treated at their facility last year and I knew I needed to get involved.” said Reynolds. Kostevicki, executive director for Gulf Coast Kid’s House spoke at Cokesbury United Methodist Church in the spring. So Cordova Lanes is putting on a bowling fundraiser to help make a difference for those kids on June 25th at 2 pm. Teams of four can rent a lane for $40 or an individual player can sign up for just $10 and 100% of the proceeds will go to Gulf Coast Kid’s House. All ages and skill levels are welcome to participate. To sign up stop by or call Cordova Lanes at (850) 477-2300. Keller Williams, LaBorde, the Hansen Real Estate team, and West Florida Law have recently opened new Downtown offices at 21 S. Tarragona. They will host a ribbon-cutting at 4 pm on Friday, June 10. The organizations will celebrate the area’s exciting business growth and energy with their partners, colleagues, clients and other guests. There will be a charitable raffle with tickets for $10 each, and proceeds from the event will to support Manna Food Pantries as they continue to recover from the loss of their Gonzalez building in the April 2014 floods.
