IT’S TIME TO pop some buttery popcorn, dim the lights and settle comfortably into the cushy, airconditioned bliss of Summer Blockbusters. Only metaphorically, of course! You don’t want to spend the season languishing dully in front of a giant screen, your mouth slightly agape and bits of candy ensnared in your shirt collar. It’s summertime and adventures await! The calendar is packed this month so you can be the star of your own Summer Blockbuster in Downtown Pensacola. Showtime starts with a bang at the Sertoma Fourth of July celebration where a daylong festival will take over Seville Square followed by a fireworks extravaganza set to music after sunset. July’s second act will come in the form of the wildly popular Blue Angels summer show at Pensacola Beach. The feats of aeronautical prowess guarantee fastpaced summer fun for the thousands that view the show.

If that’s not enough heart-pounding action, how about an extended chase sequence? The Seville Quarter Running of the Bulls will come to the streets July 18, with runners acting as fleeing matadors and horned roller derby girls with wiffle ball bats playing the part of the raging bulls. The event is one part of a full weekend of festivities with Spanish flair at Seville Quarter. If you’re not in the mood for courting danger, try the annual Crab Cake Cook Off benefit at Seville on July 22. Local chefs compete in a cutthroat competition of the tastiest crab cakes and guests get to savor and judge the winners while local charity Arc Gateway reaps the benefits—a feel good event for everyone! Get the details on page 19. Make your perfect Summer Blockbuster Downtown with these or a host of other events going on throughout this month. Gallery Night, Palafox Market, Evenings in Olde Seville Square and even literal blockbusters at the Summer Classic Movies Series all await you during July, so get out there and embrace the good summer vibes that are coursing through the city along with the undulating waves of scorching wet heat! This month also marks my final editorial for Downtown Crowd, for by the time you read this, I’ll already be gone. Just to a different job in the very near vicinity of this one—don’t worry! It’s my pleasure to drag Josh Newby from the shadowy backstage and into the spotlight as your new DTC editor! Welcome to your own page, Josh! While the credits may be rolling on my tenure as editor, the last five years is most definitely a time that, much like a beloved film, I’ll joyously revisit again and again.

B R I C K THE RUBY V E N SLIPPER BAKERY Coming late July to West Government Street is the Brick Oven Bakery, the brainchild of Michael and Heather Frimenko. The restaurant will feature an Italian-made, custom brick oven and dozens of tasty treats as part of what Frimenko hopes will be the start of both a bread culture in Pensacola and a westward move for Downtown’s revitalization. The team has a long history of baking together, from here locally many years ago to up north in Philadelphia more recently. In 2012, they sold all they had, moved back to their native town and both got jobs in the local restaurant scene. It was at Carmen’s Lunch Bar, Michael’s place of work, that he was put in touch with those that could help make his dream come true. At the start, it will be a completely family-run business, with both Frimenkos at the helm, though they plan to hire additional help as the demand begins to surely grow.

If you’re looking for a way to have fun with your family this 4th of July, look no further than Downtown Pensacola and Pensacola Beach. The 26th annual Sertoma Independence Day Celebration will be held Downtown followed by Red, White, Blues Week with the Blue Angels, providing lots of entertainment, food and a jaw-dropping performance. The Sertoma festivities July 4 will begin at 11 am and end with the largest fireworks display on the Gulf Coast over Pensacola Bay at 9:05 pm. With free admission, anyone can browse the craft booths such as Lisa Sutton’s Jewelry for Hair and Dietrich’s Honey Farm and choose from one of many of the food vendors including Sonny’s BBQ, Kona Ice, and Tin Tins Oriental Food. Children can enjoy the age-appropriate activities including taking pictures with Disney characters Ariel, Elsa and Jack, three different bounce houses and inflatable slides, crafts with Lowe’s and Applebee’s, a rock climbing wall and bungee jump, and free face painting with clowns. Live music will also be provided by Cat Country FM 98.7, Triple Lindies, and Banana Republic. There’s another fireworks display happening July 4 at 8:30 pm on Casino Beach as well. The display will be set off over Santa Rosa Sound just offshore of Quietwater Beach, with the best views at Portofino Boardwalk and Quietwater. Red, White, and Blues week occurs directly after, giving a spectacular reason for why any out-of-town family members should stay in Pensacola longer. The Blue Angels will be performing several times during the week starting with the July 8 Breakfast with the Blues, a chance to eat breakfast at a beachfront restaurant and avoid the crowds while watching the pilots prepare. July 9 at 2 pm is the Practice flight demonstration followed by the dress rehearsal July 10 beginning at noon with the Blues flying at 2 pm on Casino Beach. Saturday July 11 will be the big performance with the same times as the rehearsal, but with a much larger audience. “A lot of people don’t know that the Blue Angels spend 300 days on the road and that they train six days a week both practicing and performing,” said Amber Lynn Daniel, the public affairs officer for the Blue Angels. “They strive to maintain proficiency. Thursday they do circle and arrivals, where they spot their check-points and fly through them so they know where they are. After is the first performance practice, where they establish visual aids. Friday is a practice performance. Saturday is really exciting because we get to show our hometown how hard we’ve been working.” The Santa Rosa Island Authority advises anyone looking to enjoy the show to follow proper precautions. “There is no designated parking after 9 am particularly,” said Katie King, a representative of the Pensacola Beach Publicity. “Parking is wherever you can find it and traffic will back up over two bridges the longer you wait. You should arrive before 8 am and make sure you stay hydrated.”

The works of William Shakespeare loom large over the literature world, but for many people any study of the Elizabethan classics ends after high school English or drama class. Luckily for culture hungry audiences, local theatre group the Southeastern Teen Shakespeare Company (SETSCO) offers a way to bone up on the Bard while being heartily entertained. This month, the troupe will be performing Shakespeare’s greatest work of drama, Hamlet, at the Pensacola Little Theatre July 24, 25, 26 and 31, and Aug. 1 and 2. SETSCO is a group that allows teens to audition to be involved in a conservatory program that includes workshops, performing events and one full-scale play each season. Michelle Hancock has been the director of the group for the last seven years. “Everybody in the company is a teen, 13 to 19, and throughout the year we play at renaissance fairs and festivals,” she says. “The kids do acting workshops and Shakespeare workshops so that they’re learning about theatre and acting and the craft, and they’re also constantly in the rehearsal process to go out to do these performances.” Many know Hamlet mostly as the work of Shakespeare with the guy and the skull, and that scene contains Hamlet’s famous “To be or not to be” meditation on life and death. The skull is present because the scene takes place in a graveyard where Hamlet is watching gravediggers digging fresh graves in an old cemetery, which Hancock says was totally normal in Shakespeare’s time. The macabre nature of story doesn’t

end there though. In Hamlet, betrayal, scheming and most of all murder take center stage in a tale of ongoing existential woe. It may all sound like heavy material for teens, but Hancock says the players in SETSCO are up for the challenge. ”There’s a lot of contemplation about life and death and dreams and what life means,” Hancock says. “He’s got the ‘to be or not to be’ monologue which is about ‘should I commit suicide or not commit suicide because I can’t kill my uncle so should I kill myself instead.’” Hancock says she chose the heady tragedy because it’s known as the greatest drama of Shakespeare’s repertoire and the teens that perform it are definitely up to challenge. All the players and technical crew behind the scenes are fully prepared to deal professionally with both the material and the challenges that can sometimes arise mid-production. They prepare by doing table reads where they discuss characters, motives and the words they speak. “I make sure that every actor knows exactly what they’re saying every time they speak and I think that makes a huge difference,” Hancock says. “I’m really about digging into the text and finding the meaning and conveying the meaning and making the people more than a caricature.” Tickets are $15 general admission and all shows start at 7:30 pm. CRAB CAKE COOK-OFF COMING JULY 22 BY JOSH NEWBY

The Arc Gateway Crab Cake Cook-off is one of Pensacola’s most iconic and well-attended fund-raisers of the year, and it’s right around the corner. Guests are given the chance to sample world-class crab cakes, sip wine and beer while surveying the silent auction, purchase local art made by Arc Gateway’s very own clients, and even participate in a raffle for a Yeti cooler. The event, which has been a successful local fundraiser for more than a decade now, is returning with those sumptuous, fluffy, quartersized treats on July 22 at Seville Quarter, which hosts and sponsors the fun. Tickets for the event, which starts at 6 pm, are just $60 per person for all the crab cakes and socializing you could hope for in one night. Started in the 1950s, Arc Gateway is a nonprofit organization that serves children who have or are at risk of developmental disabilities, as well as adults with developmental disabilities. They began the crab cake fundraiser as a way to increase awareness of their services to the community. What began as an annual get-together attended by about 50 people has grown to become a quickly and consistently sold-out event of 300 individuals. “The event is always a lot of fun,” said Grier Halstead, development and fundraising manager for Arc. “We have a lot of things new this year, including beer provided by Lewis Bear Company, a raffle, different sponsorship levels, and even a celebrity chef.” That’s right, Chef Jason “J” Maxwell, a contestant from the TV show Hell’s Kitchen will be there, along with 20 other local chefs, making about 300 crab cakes each and

July 2015 downtowncrowd.com 16 16 July 2015 downtowncrowd.com

competing for the top people’s and judges’ prizes. The event is always a good time for the community and a huge benefit to Arc’s clients. Last year, Arc Gateway helped more than 900 individuals in the community with developmental disabilities after raising more than $25,000 at the cook-off. Beyond the food and drink is a great opportunity to score some truly unique art made by Arc’s clients. The artists receive 50 percent of the art sale, and the other 50 percent goes back into funding the program. One hundred percent of the proceeds from the event goes to Arc Gateway programs. To snatch up tickets before they’re gone, visit arc-gateway.org/foundation/crab-cake-cook-off.

In which we unfairly judge upcoming attractions based solely on their trailers. By Josh Newby.

SOUTHPAW RELEASE DATE: July 24 CAST: Jake Gyllenhaal, Rachel McAdams, Forest Whitaker TERMINATOR: GENISYS RELEASE DATE: July 1 CAST: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Emilia Clarke, JK Simmons What I got from the preview: The story and its place in the Terminator timeline don’t really make sense or matter, but here goes. A young Sarah Connor (played by a brunette Daenerys Targaryen) and an aging terminator are teaming up to prevent the events of Terminator 2: Judgment Day. But if they are successful, won’t the best movie in the franchise be rendered non-existent? If they are not successful, what is the point of this movie? Most notable for: After Rise of the Machines and Salvation, I’m not sure who thought this would be a good idea, but it speaks to the studio’s cyborg-level persistence. Unqualified critical observation: Ugh. The overuse of CGI, the blatant disregard for realworld physics, the even more blatant disregard for the previously established timeline—all indicate that this is a blatant cash grab and a platform for Clarke’s movie career.

MAGIC MIKE: XXL RELEASE DATE: July 1 CAST: Channing Tatum, Matt Bomer, Elizabeth Banks, Amber Heard What I got from the preview: The hypnotic, pulsing beats of Ginuwine’s “Pony” begin the trailer. Immediately, I knew it was time to put to use all I learned from the first Magic Mike—eye contact, ebb and flow, get that money. Tatum’s male stripper goes from welding to dancing in the blink of an eye, because dance-welding is awesome, and so is this preview. Most notable for: This sequel to the 2012 smash hit features an expanded cast (that is sorely void of McConaughey’s character), bigger dance numbers, and enough abs to make me only slightly uncomfortable. Unqualified critical observation: Steven Soderbergh made the best indie movie about careless sex since Boogie Nights, and packaged it in a story that is the film equivalent of fast food-level carnal pleasure. Though he only serves as cinematographer on this one, it promises to be the party montage with deep underlying themes that the first was. Now, the laws of heterosexuality may say I can’t be excited, but I see a law-breaker every time I dance in the mirror.

What I got from the preview: This gritty drama details the life of Billy Hope, a boxer at the top of his game whose life is falling apart around him after his wife is murdered and he loses custody of his daughter. I expect lots of metaphors about Hope’s ring fights mirroring the battles he wages in court and against his own personal demons. Most notable for: Gyllenhaal is really pulling out all the stops for that Oscar, after Brokeback Mountain and last year’s phenomenal Nightcrawler. His angry faces and

body transformations for this film might just means that the third time’s the charm. Unqualified critical observation: Here Comes the Boom notwithstanding, boxing movies are almost always crowd- and criticpleasers (Raging Bull, Cinderella Man, The Fighter). Something is just entrancing about the type of people who choose to box and the emotional and physical sacrifices they make in pursuit of a goal that few of us understand. I hope Southpaw continues the trend.

ANT-MAN RELEASE DATE: July 17 CAST: Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly, Michael Douglas What I got from the preview: Reformed con man Scott Lang is recruited by a secret agency to use his thieving powers for good by donning a suit with the ability to shrink to microscopic levels. Some Marvelsplaining: Lang is not the original Ant-Man, but rather the successor to the insect-sized throne, since the original Ant-Man was a slightly terrible person and woman-beater. Most notable for: Apparently new technology was created to bring the miniature sets and action to life. I’m excited to see that if nothing else. Unqualified critical observation: Age of Ultron left a bad, Marvel-tinged taste in my mouth. Too many characters and too predictable a storyline. Presumably, the script has been in development since before the first Iron Man. Surely all that time won’t yield a plot indistinguishable from other entries. I’m holding out hope that Ant-Man will be a Marvelhater’s Marvel movie, but let’s face it—it will be a roaring success regardless.

TRAINWRECK RELEASE DATE: July 17 CAST: Amy Schumer, Bill Hader, Brie Larson, Colin Quinn What I got from the preview: Subverting the role usually reserved for Gerard Butler and Ashton Kutcher, Schumer plays a career-focused, commitment-phobic party girl who must face her fears when she becomes interested in a sports columnist. Raunchy, unapologetic humor and celebrity cameos punctuate the very funny trailer, which promises wider acceptance of Schumer and a return to form for director Judd Apatow. Most notable for: Schumer’s uniquely broad feminist brand of comedy has been slowly creeping into the mainstream for years now, and here she’s given a medium to truly show her talent in a long-form, character-driven way. Unqualified critical observation: My wife watches this trailer every morning upon waking, so my morning ritual has become accented by Schumer’s obscenities, Hader’s nasally voice, and the party hip-hop that wallpapers the preview. These repeat exposures to the same material haven’t decreased my excitement, though, and this may be the rare movie that men and women enjoy just as much for the same reasons.
