Alright, we made it through the first month of 2017. Not without some trials, tribulations, tears and Twitter rants, but we made it!

Luckily we have some amazing events coming up this month to help take our minds off the political rants on Facebook.

This is our fourth annual Pensacon issue and we were able to talk to some of the amazing cast from Stranger Things, the binge-worthy and addicting 80s sci-fi series from Netflix. Check out our four-page spread on the cast and get all the details you need for attending Pensacon this year.

Another event I’m really excited about is FemFest 2017. It’s a threeday local festival geared toward raising awareness of feminism, inclusion and equality. We spoke with FemFest co-founder Kirsten Norris about the event and the inspiration

This month also serves as the last issue for our wonderful writer Dawn Gresko. She’s been an integral part of the Ballinger team for roughly two years. We will miss her and wish her luck on her next endeavor. As Dawn leaves, Tanner Yea (pronounced yay) has come on board as our new editorial assistant and we’re excited for the fresh perspective he’ll bring to Ballinger’s publications.

The three-day event will feature a question and answer panel from STRIVE, a night of short feminist films at First City Arts C enter, and an evening at Chizuko, where Morrissette will be hosting “Womanhood and Lavender- Feminism within the African American Community.” “Womanhood and Lavender” will feature women who are dancers, performers, singers, and spoken word artists, Norris said.

emFest 2017 is an event celebrating intersectional feminism across the Pensacola community. Events begin Thursday, February 9th and end Friday, February 11th.

Last month, millions of people from around the world marched for women’s rights. From Washington D.C. to small southern towns, women took a stand together to voice their opinions, concerns and their demands for the future. In the wake of that passion and excitement, Pensacola will welcome a three-day intersectional feminism festival titled FemFest 2017.

The festival will end with an evening at Artel Gallery on Sunday night, with production of the “Vagina Monologues” in conjunction with Artel’s exhibit, which uses various mediums to focus on feminist themes.

“We did ‘Vagina Monologues’ last year—after that, I knew I wanted to do it again but I wanted to do it in a way where we could expand on ‘Vagina Monologues’ and that feminist excitement that gathered right around the time of February, so we started talking about a feminist festival,” Kirstin Norris, FemFest co-founder said.

Norris noted the art on display will range from pottery to watercolor to screenprints.

“Last year, the spotlight was really on global violence against women, and this year the focus is on violence against women in the workplace,” Norris said.

“Sexual violence is a serious problem in the United States as well as other countries, and we’ll be particularly touching on sexual violence in Syria. “

Norris spoke with several individuals who performed in the monologues show, friends from STRIVE, and a friend named Haley Morrissette from the Black Women Empower Collective and they all brainstormed ideas about the kind of

inclusive as possible we want everyone to understand that feminism is for everyone, not just for people who are downtrodden or upset with the patriarchy—it’s an everyday choice to empower and support each other, to celebrate our differences, and to be together in everything we do as much as we can.”

Norris said the line “Division is our diversion,” from the “Vagina Monologues” stands out to her as an inspiration for FemFest.

“It’s just really powerful and very true,” she said. “Everyone involved in FemFest comes from different backgrounds- social, ethnic, and economic backgrounds, and we’re all working toward a common goal and have been lucky enough to do this for two years an have made best friends along the way.” * FemFest is pleased to name Lakeview Center’s Rape Crisis and Trauma Recovery Program as its 2017 beneficiary. All proceeds raised during FemFest will go directly to providing resources to this well deserving program.

THE BEADS ARE BACK

Mardi Gras season has begun in Pensacola, and the biggest events of the season are not to be missed.

According to Pensacola Mardi Gras president, Danny Zimmern, Mardi Gras has flourished in Pensacola since he took the helm in 2000. “We’re all about the growth of downtown and we continue to be something people can count on for a big weekend. It really adds to the economy, so there’s all sorts of benefits to the community,” Zimmern said.

The kickoff parade is the Krewe of Lafitte Illuminated Parade, starting at 7:30 pm on Friday, Feb. 24 in Downtown Pensacola. Every parade in Downtown Pensacola follows the same route in order to accommodate for road closures and portable toilets.

The parade is put on by the all-male Krewe of Lafitte, the Panhandle’s oldest and biggest krewe, and is approximately half the size of Saturday’s downtown Grand Mardi Gras Parade; Lafitte will have 14 of their own floats in the parade.

The Grand Mardi Gras Parade will start at 2 pm, Saturday, Feb. 25, with entries lining up at 10 am.

The parade includes marching bands and dance teams, as well as floats, equaling approximately 225 entries to take part in the parade, which totals about 6,000 participants. If the weather is nice, the parade can last for hours, Zimmern noted.

The Grand Mardi Gras Parade is the biggest event in Downtown Pensacola all year, drawing more guests than the Pelican Drop. Also, according to Zimmern, it boasts a more all-ages atmosphere than many of the other parades along the Gulf Coast, with a children and family area to be included this year. “We pride ourselves on being a family-friendly event and want to keep that tradition going,” he said.

If you’ve ever attended a Pensacola parade, Mardi Gras or not, you expect to catch some beads or candy; it’s just how we’re trained here. What makes Pensacola’s Mardi Gras unique is their throws, says Zimmern. “Other places along the Gulf Coast don’t have our throws, and you certainly don’t expect to catch anything at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade or the Rose Bowl Parade,” he added.

with the crowning of the king and queen of Mardi Gras; through a secret process, this year’s king and queen were selected from the Mayoki Indian tribe.

Zimmern hopes to broaden the event this year, remaining tight-lipped on the details but indicating they have hopes to include the krewes and potentially their floats for this year’s event.

For Zimmern, the most exciting thing about Mardi Gras is the unity it inspires. “These 70 different groups are celebrating a bit differently and have their own way of doing it—it just seems like a special time. Seeing everybody come together with their own personalities, looks, and activities is what excites me the most,” he said.

The overall turnout, although partially dependent on the weather, is expected to include 50,000 to 90,000 attendees.

going on at the time, things that were happening in our community. I just posted it on my personal page, and it was kind of like a talk of the town kind of thing.

How does your live show differ from the YouTube videos?

The show is a lot different. If I did 45 minutes of yelling at fake kids on stage I don’t think it would be as entertaining as the videos. I like to touch base with things that people can relate to, three and four minute long stories, sometimes it takes a second to get them. I don’t want to get too into character as southern momma. When I make these videos there aren’t many people watching, so being on stage is a huge difference. When I started doing this, I had done stand-up a couple times and it was weird. But I started doing more and more of it, and doing video and stand-up at the same time, which I think was kind of prepping me for what I would do later on.

omedian and YouTube video star Darren Knight will make a stop in Pensacola on part of his “Southern Momma,” tour. Knight gained recognition for his southern mom character after uploading a humorous cell phone video of himself imitating a mother getting her kids ready for school.

Lines like, “Come here to me!” and “Cut them eyes at me one more time!” resonated with viewers across the country and the parody videos kept coming.

Knight took a moment to talk with Downtown Crowd about the beloved “Momma” character and what he draws inspiration from.

What was childhood like for you growing up with your own southern mom and what were some of the most used phrases?

Mom’s favorite- when we were always getting into trouble—Mom would call us to come and to get us to come, she’d yell “Come here to me!” I have two sisters, one stepsister, one biological, so there are three of us, and we had like 5-6 cousins who were over all the time. And the friends from school, when I was a kid, my mother treated my friends just like the rest of us.

How did the opportunity to do a live show come up?

I remember when John, my now manager, reached out to me, and said he’d love to work with me and asked if I thought I would want to do a show. I thought there was only one way to find out. I didn’t know if I was going to get up there and fold or not, and he put a lot of trust in me. Doing your own show is very different from performing at an open mic night.

How did it go?

I didn’t enjoy it at first, but then I started doing a show in my hometown.

You can go on tour with a set, but you cant do that in the same town with the same material for like 8 months, but I learned a lot. It forced me to come up with material relatively quickly.

Where do you continue to draw inspiration from for your “Southern Momma” character?

Well, I’ve got some friends with kids and the struggles they have to deal with, coupled with a very vivid imagination, have allowed me to easily recall situations from when I was a kid.

Lastly, I’ve got two kids that aren’t really mine, but are like mine- one is

16, one is 17, and they hang out with me more than their own parents. I have gotten a ton of material from them.

They’ll eat all the pop tarts and leave the box in the pantry, and if you ask them to drag a vacuum across the floor, it’s like you’re pulling one of their toes off.

It’s interesting that in your videos, you never dress in costume as a woman, you just convince the viewer with your voice and your actions.

We have just recently put up some videos where we put on all the costumes, but I think there’s comedic value in the fact that i’m impersonating a woman but I have goatee. The fact that I can get people to the point where they forget they’re watching a video of a man acting like a mom, and then you sprinkle on the fact that these are things you heard growing up, kind of makes it into something cool. These women I’m referencing have a voice. A lot of women are the breadwinners of the family, but in many cases, a lot of woman stay at home with their children. I’m glad I am able to give a voice to a massive amount of our population who busts their ass cooking and cleaning and raising kids.

I’m single and when I’m not on tour, keeping up with myself and my animals, my laundry, sweeping, mopping, folding, planning the chores- is hard enough. And so many women do this for themselves and entire families- it’s nice to tap into that and give them a little comedy.

What’s next for you?

I don’t know yet. I’m just taking it as it comes. I love the “southern mama” character. I’ve also been doing this for about a year and I would definitely welcome some writers, or some ideas, because we’ve been talking about a direction to go in. We’re in uncharted waters. Right now, we’re in a real great spot. Do we leave that and go to television? I’m going to go wherever God wants us to go. I do believe in a higher power, and I feel blessed and happy to be where I am at this point.

My ultimate goal is to make people laugh, it really has been a continuous goal throughout my life.

Into The Upside Down With The Cast Pensacon has Stranger Things in tow for 2017… If you haven’t heard, our area’s premier comic convention is presenting familiar faces from the Netflix hit summer series, Stranger Things: prepare to meet Glennellen Anderson (the red-headed snitch Nicole), Catherine Dyer (cut-throat Agent Connie Frazier), and Randy Havens (Upside Down theorist Mr. Clarke).

Downtown Crowd had the pleasure and privilege of speaking with these celebrities in the exclusive interviews that follow, and we invite you to read on about the stars who will be making Pensacon even stranger (in the best ways) during the weekend of Feb. 17 to 19. “The writing was there,” said Catherine. “Right there on the page for me.

It’s a testament to the writing because I sort of instinctively understood what the writers wanted from the beginning. I knew I had to be in control at all times to complete the mission.”

Agent Frazier is rather ruthless and distant emotionally, so Catherine understood she had to keep herself focused on completing her scene (in the same way Agent Frazier was focused on completing her

acting coach and co-owner of the Atlanta-based acting studio called Drama Ink. But, Stranger Things fans are likely to recognize her as Agent Connie Frazier—the Department of Energy’s secret servant, Dr. Brenner’s loyal-to-theend lackey, and (SPOILER ALERT) poor ol’ Benny’s killer. Although she was only hired on for two episodes, the directors of Stranger Things enjoyed Catherine’s work as Agent Frazier so much so that they asked her to come back for three more

mission for the villainous Dr. Brenner.) However, Catherine admits that one of her favorite scenes was with Mr. Clarke (Randy Havens), not only because she and Randy had good on-set chemistry, but also because she and Randy had some freedom to tweak their spoken lines— thanks to directors Matt and Ross, who were very open to opinions and suggestions from the two actors.

A fun fact about Catherine that many may not know: she is actually very skilled at calligraphy, a hobby she picked up in her free time and honed in on with

private classes under a professional calligrapher in LA. It takes a great deal of patience, a trait which Catherine doesn’t share with her no-nonsense, cut-throat counterpart: Agent Frazier. Wondering if Agent Frazier will make a miraculous comeback at Pensacon? Anything is possible when we’ve seen Stranger Things! So don’t pass up the opportunity to catch Catherine (aka Agent Frazier) at Pensacon, she’ll be there all weekend.

The Red-headed

“Performer for life, no back up plan.” That’s the motto for Glennellen Anderson, who you might recognize as Nicole from Stranger Things, the red head from Tommy, Steve and Carol’s group who calls out (and smashes the camera of) Jonathan Byers once she catches him at school with seemingly stalker-esque photos of Nancy Wheeler. But, if there’s one thing Glennellen wants fans to know, it’s this: Nicole’s personality is not a reflection of her own. You’d be likely to find her hanging out with someone like Jonathan—with whom she has more in common from her eclectic choice of friends, her family-oriented nature, and her refusal to give in to peer pressure

and cruel behavior.

To say Glennellen is a multitalented performer is almost an understatement, because for her there are no limitations to what she’ll dive into next. From releasing her debut album PERSPECTIVE to working in theatre and on popular shows like American Idol and Stranger Things, Glennellen’s versatility has not only helped her in landing auditions for all spectrums of characters, but it has also aided her in her musical pursuits because she’s never boxed herself into one genre; she’s covered anything from pop and jazz to rock, opera and everything in between. “I’ve never believed in limits,” said Glennellen.

“I love to travel and explore whether it’s in the world or different avenues of the business. I like to dive into all of it and challenge myself.” It was at 11 years old that Glennellen

found her niche in acting at Pensacola Little Theatre, where she was cast for her first on-stage production in The Velveteen Rabbit. But, if you ask Glennellen what was her favorite PLT production, she’ll tell you The Wizard Of Oz. Why? Because she donned a glittery pink dress for her dream role as Glinda the Good Witch. In fact, it was through acting that Glennellen got into more musicals, offering more opportunities for her to shine as a singer (and hone her music skills). But music has always come naturally to Glennellen, who has been singing since she ran up on stage and grabbed the microphone from her musician parents to sing, “You Are My Sunshine,” at only 2 years old.

Glennellen certainly isn’t shy and (unlike Nicole) she won’t be giving

you any mean glances if you encounter her at Pensacon. So stop by and say hello at the Stranger Things table, where she’ll be signing autographs and taking photos for fans with fellow cast members Caleb, Randy and Catherine. Feel free to pick up a copy of her debut album, which she’ll have on hand, and ask her what she’ll be doing with her music this year so you can hop on the bandwagon before it takes off elsewhere. In addition to her spot at the table, Glennellen will be answering the questions you’re dying to ask at the special Pensacon Stranger Things panel.

theorist Randy Havens is no stranger to science fiction. Before playing Mr. Clarke, the loveable, sweater vest-wearing science teacher on Netflix’s original series Stranger Things,Havens was obsessed with Stephen King novels and 80s film classics like E.T. and Firestarter.

“I always loved horror movies, especially some with the John Carpenter vibe,” Havens said. “And Stranger Things definitely has that feel with the music and the score.”

At several points during the binge-worthy first season, Havens found himself revisiting his childhood affection for the surreal and the otherworldly, as his character Mr. Clarke helped his

students understand the science behind the “upside down.”

“I had no idea I would be drawing an explanation for quantum physics on a plate,” he said, referencing a memorable scene from the show.

Havens has a recurring role on AMC’s Halt and Catch Fire, and also appeared in the film Be Cops and the popular series Vampire Diaries but he said the response he’s received from Stranger Things has been like no other project thus far.

“No one knew in production how big it was going to get—we knew it was special and it was fun and it was good, but there are so many TV shows and its easy to get lost in the shuffle,” he said. “We were just hoping for a dedicated core group of people who would love the show and never expected for it to speak

to so many people the way it did.”

One of the things Havens focused on the most while preparing to play Mr. Clarke was the fact he was kind, and he had a genuine interest in this particular group of kids.

“I thought about some reasons why Mr. Clarke would pick these guys. These guys are outcasts— maybe he was an outcast, which doesn’t always win you a lot of friends, and obviously he doesn’t care about being cool,” Havens said. “So I think for me, what Mr. Clarke sees in these kids, was himself, and wanted to provide this safe place to be curious and to learn.”

Upward Thinking Q+A with Local Leader Jon Shell

By Dawn Gresko Many of us know him as the director of Upward Intuition, spearheading projects like the Blake Doyle Community Park and Jeff’s Corner Garden. Others might recognize his name on the prestigious team of Levin-Rinke property realtors. No matter what hat he’s wearing in the Pensacola community, Jon Shell is all about the Upward Intuition motto: thoughts create reality.

How has your experience as director of Upward Intuition affected your role as a realtor and vice-versa?

I started Upward Intuition before I became a realtor, although I did go to school for real estate development. I’ve been fortunate enough to meet a lot of people through Upward Intuition and I feel as though I’ve learned so much more about the development process, and learned about how local government works, by just jumping in headfirst. I want my work at Upward Intuition, Jeff’s Corner Garden, and ARC Gateway—I want it all to feed into what I’m doing as a realtor.

Why do you feel so strongly connected to the Upward Intuition cause and Blake Doyle Community Park?

I’ve been skateboarding for over 20 years. I played other team sports like soccer and basketball, but when I started skateboarding I knew I found my thing.

It’s like that for so many other kids. Skateboarding becomes an artistic expression of yourself, for you to delve into on your own time and terms. I really wanted to provide a safe and positive environment for kids who are going through their formative years, just like I was, so they have the chance to practice what they have a passion for.

How has the mission of Upward Intuition evolved since you began?

I started Upward Intuition in spring of 2015 as a way to raise money for a big project, so it was really born out of necessity to build the skate park. Once further down road, we realized we needed a mission and vision. I saw there was this big gap between young innovative people in Pensacola and business leaders and politicians who can enact change, so I wanted

I wanted the youth to realize that they can have an impact. So I wanted to use the skate park project as a vehicle to show our youth what they are capable of.

t’s time again for the fourth annual University of West Florida Women in Leadership Conference. The theme for 2017 is “Designing Your Future,” featuring guest speakers from local businesses such as Gulf Power Vice President of Customer Service and Sales Bentina Terry and Saltmarsh Managing Director Christina Doss.

This year the speakers will dedicate more time to giving the attendees knowledge they can use in their future employment rather than sharing personal testimonies.

For example, Terry’s closing address will discuss the importance of putting the information retained from the conference, as well as books on leadership, into practice and taking action.

Sherry Hartnett, director of the UWF Executive Mentor Program, created the event while trying to recruit speakers for the students in the Executive Mentor Program; she determined they needed to show women in business positions of authority. Hartnett also realized they couldn’t choose just one woman, and opted for a panel instead. “Then, I realized it would be fun to have a couple of panels of women – and from there the original idea to have one speaker, turned into a nearly full-day conference and we’ve never looked back,” she explained.

operate, and provide a view of the careers one can have without migrating to fish bowl cities such as New York City and Los Angeles. What’s more, this makes contacting the speakers more accessible.

and endeavors, even if they simply gain confirmation that their current path is the right one. Half the speakers’ time is dedicated solely to audience questions, really catering to enrich the experiences of the attendees.

“What makes every year unique is hearing the very real and inspiring stories from the speakers,” says Hartnett. The primary audience are young professionals and upcoming graduates, but Hartnett assures diverse speakers are recruited in order to reach attendees of all ages, industries, ethnicities, experiences, and life stages.

“I believe,” she says, “the attendees will enjoy the enthusiasm and honesty of the speakers. They’re just such real people; you can tell they’re speaking from the heart and that’s meaningful.”

There will be opportunities for networking throughout the event during breaks between speakers; along with the attendees, many panelists and speakers will be available to chat with after the conclusion of the conference.

The biggest networking opportunity is the Round-Table Luncheon included in the conference ticket, wherein a facilitator sits at each of the ten tables to assist in cultivating conversations among the attendees.

If you’re interested in getting involved, Hartnett says, you’ll need to act fast. Tickets are free, but this event has sold out quickly every year. However, that shouldn’t discourage you as there will be a waiting list for potential attendees if someone with a ticket is unable to attend.

Film: In which we unfairly judge upcoming attractions based solely on their trailers.

THE COMEDIAN RELEASE DATE: Feb. 3 CAST: Robert De Niro, Danny DeVito, Leslie Mann What I got from the preview: Jackie Burke (De Niro) isn’t doing so hot. The aging comic is struggling to reinvent himself while staying relevant and is unable to convince the audience he’s doing anything other than grasping at straws. Tension runs high between Burke and just about everyone, until he finds inspiration in an unlikely place.

Most notable for: Robert De Niro killed it as a comedian in Martin Scorsese’s classic, The King of Comedy, and everyone is eager to see how he portrays his second

comic role. Unqualified critical observation: I want to like this movie, but I’m not sure I love the idea of De Niro and Leslie Mann together— perhaps their on-screen chemistry, providing there is some, will fool me into thinking otherwise.

Meanwhile, I’m interested to see De Niro in what I assume will be a more joyous roll than many of his other notable pictures (think, Goodfellas and Cape Fear.)

DYING LAUGHING RELEASE DATE: Feb. 24 CAST: Chris Rock, Sarah Silverman, Amy Schumer, Jerry Seinfeld What I got from the preview: My first thought was, damn, that’s a lot of very funny, relevant and successful comics in one film. I think each person has a very different style of humor and brings something special to the table so I’d be interested to see each of their interviews throughout the film.

Most notable for: The world of comedy has become an interesting point of focus today. Many recent podcasts, feature films and documentaries have emerged lately that touch on the weird and strange journey of the rise of a comedian.

Unqualified critical observation: Being a comedian is not nearly as fun as it looks. Sure you make people laugh, maybe get your own comedy special, but you have to endure the continuous emotional and psychological highs and lows that come with performing comedy, especially if that comedy is stand-up.

MUSIC: What our staff is listening to this month Dirty Projectors, Keep Your Name Hana’s pick: It’s been almost five years since the Dirty

Projectors released their last album, “Swing Lo Magellan.” Last fall, the band released one single, “Keep Your Name,” from their upcoming self-titled album. I wasn’t expecting to hear a soulful and autotuned version of Longstreth’s vocals as the song opened, but despite my initial surprise, I liked it. It was just “Drake enough” to make me chuckle, but real enough to make me pay enough attention to the haunting words. The band has released two other singles from the album, which will be released in February, I like those enough, because i like the band, but it’s “Keep Your Name,” I can’t stop listening to.

Run the Jewels, RTJ3

Guy’s pick: Run the Jewels surprise Christmas day release was one of the greatest gifts of all time (2nd only to baby Jeaus, of course). New York rapper/producer El-P and Atlanta’s Killer Mike’s mix of bragadoccio, swagger and searing political commentary is more powerful than ever, Every bar spit is sharp, witty and poignant, with subject matter ranging from being too vicious for the grammy committees, to lyrical jabs at spray-tanned politicians with bad toupees. Killer Mike’s time spent on the campaign trail with Bernie Sanders (swoon) has made him more passionate and angrier than ever. He’s got, uh, a lot to discuss with us post-election day .

EL-P’s production has always been stellar, but he has taken his sci-fi dystopian beats to nervous, sweat-inducing new heights. In other words, beats are fire. This 2016 release is already 2017’s best and my personal soundtrack to coping with post-inaugural, Twilight Zone America.

IN DUBIOUS BATTLE RELEASE DATE: Feb.17 CAST: James Franco, Vincent D’Onofrio, Selena Gomez, Bryan Cranston What I got from the preview: Apple pickers in 1930s California are far from happy with their current wages, which have been cut in half thanks to boss-man Robert Duvall. When faced with the option of “whine or go to work,” the workers choose to strike under efforts organized by James Franco’s character.

Most notable for: Being a screen adaptation of John Steinbeck’s novel of the same name.

Unqualified critical observation: If you haven’t noticed, Franco has been drawn to 1930s era book to film adapta-

tions (As We Lay Dying anyone?) However, I’ve got higher hopes for this film.

Namely the hope that I won’t fall asleep while watching it, which seems likely with this star-studded cast from Robert Duvall, Ed Harris and Zach Braff to Bryan Cranston and Sam Sheppard, accompanied by all the drama of the strike scenes and Selena Gomez’s character miraculously giving birth in the midst of all the chaos.

THE GREAT WALL RELEASE DATE: Feb. 17 CAST: Matt Damon, Jing Tian, Pedro Pascal, Willem Dafoe What I got from the preview: The Great Wall of China was actually built to keep out creatures we thought were only the stuff of stories and legends.

Most notable for: Dragons?! And Matt Damon, of course.

Unqualified critical observation: While I’m a fan of action-adventure and historical fiction films, I’m interested in seeing how the two mesh in The Great Wall. The mercenary role Matt Damon adopts isn’t a stretch from his typical characters (looking at you, Jason Bourne), so I

Bruno Mars, 24K Magic

Tanner’s pick: Bruno Mars has divided his third album into roughly two halves – the first is classic pop funk in the style of Dangerous-era Michael Jackson and the late James Brown, riding off Mars’ success on Mark Ronson’s Uptown Funk. The second half goes back into the roots of Mars’ inspiration, referencing 90s RnB acts such as Boys II Men and Teddy Riley.

From the power-ballad that is “Versace on the Floor” to the Bell Biv DeVoe-style “Finesse,” the album spreads genres but drops in innovation on tracks six and onward. This album does have staying power, as songs like Chunky and 24k Magic are sure to stay dance hall favorites for a while.

Billie Marten, Writing of Blues and Yellows

Haley’s pick: Marten, a 17-year-old North Yorkshire native, presents an album which ponders youthful uncertainty and wanderlust with the maturity and grace of someone long graduated from adolescent insecurities. The title, a reference to synesthesia, Marten weaves a gentle, honeyed narrative with intricate arrangements to showcase songwriting with all the poignant understanding of Laura Marling, and the dulcet lull of Iron & Wine. Standout tracks like “La Lune,” “Lionhearted,” and “Bird” give this album the atmosphere reflective of the colors it’s titled after; Marten paints a picture of the English countryside, softly calling you home with each song.

Feb. 18 The Jacksonian Guard is a Pensacola re-enactment group of Jacksonian era and Spanish soldiers, fifers, and drummers who perform a Colors Ceremony once a month, every third Saturday at 12 noon in Plaza Ferdinand. The ceremony commemorates Pensacola’s 195th Birthday and Florida as a U.S. Territory. While Pensacola has a storied history spanning almost 500 years, the most important thing has been its ownership and development by the United States. The site where the transfer of ownership happened—Plaza Ferdinand—still exists. The Jacksonian Guard, which is sponsored by Visit Pensacola and UWF Historic Trust, honors this great American event in period 1821 uniforms, offering military salutes, manual of arms, fife and drum music, and a transfer of Spanish flag to a replica 23-star U.S. flag that first flew over the Plaza.

The Jacksonian Guard consists of mainly students ages 12 drummer) to 29 (Fifer). They are young to represent the youthful composition of Jackson’s army and the great talent that exists among our youth today in Pensacola.
