SMEs critical to advancement exams
Story, photo by Ed Barker Naval Education and Training Professional Development Center (NETPDC) Public Affairs
Navy chiefs (E-7 to E-9) interested in shaping the future of their ratings are needed to serve as Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) for upcoming Fiscal Year 2019 Advancement Examination Readiness Reviews (AERRs). Naval Administrative Message (NAVADMIN) 221/18 announced the AERR schedule for October through December 2018. Based on this schedule, AERR panel members work as Fleet SMEs for their respective ratings to develop E-4 to E-7 advancement exams for future cycles. Navy chiefs (E-7 to E-9) on active duty, Full Time Support (FTS) and reservists on Active Duty for Special Work (ADSW) are encouraged to take part in the process by reaching out to their respective Type Com-
mander (TYCOMs) for application information. Each TYCOM has their own application procedure. “The knowledge that our fleet experts bring to the reviews is irreplaceable, it enables the exams to remain relevant and identifies Sailors, with the right skills to select for advancement,” said Naval Education and Training Professional Development Center (NETPDC) Command Master Chief, ETNCM(SS) Gregory Prichard. “AERRs give chiefs a tangible, direct input toward shaping their community – participants have a say in what their reliefs need to know. AERR participation is also a significant experience and resume builder that has the potential to benefit every chief throughout the Navy.” AERRs vary in length between one to two weeks and are held throughout the year, with most ratings being reviewed on See SMEs on page 2

Navy College Program updates: Three things to know By Ed Barker Naval Education and Training Professional Development Center (NETPDC) Public Affairs
As part of the software backbone used to support the functionality of the Navy College Program website and Navy College Virtual Education Center (NCVEC), the Navy College Management Information System (NCMIS) is continually updated.
“Our recent NCMIS upgrades include the latest updates to the Post-9/11 GI Bill, including online acknowledgement of Transferability of Education Benefits (TEB) requirements; Improvements to the MyEducation Application including individual notifications to Sailors; and Upgraded Advanced Education Voucher/Graduate Education Voucher (AEV/ GEV) functionality,” Steve Ramey, NCMIS program manager for the Naval Education and Training Professional
Development Center said. Here are three things to know about the NCMIS enhancements: 1. Updated Post-9/11 GI Bill Process: As announced in NAVADMIN 236/18, all Sailors are required to sign a Statement of Understanding (SOU) to begin the process of transferring unused GI Bill Education Benefits to family members. Once logged into MyEducation from the Navy College Program website, the service member reviews the
SOU and agrees to the statement. Further instructions will guide the Sailor to the milConnect website (https://milconnect.dmdc.osd.mil/milconnect/) to transfer benefits. All Transfer of Education Benefit (TEB) requests must be approved by Navy Personnel Command or Commander, Navy Reserve Forces Command. Sailors can see the status of their TEB by logging into milConnect. See Navy college on page 2

nuclear-powered aircraft carrier and lead ship of her class. The 200-foot flight deck replica will be comprised of more than 600, three-foot-by-threefoot tiles and more than 1,000 individual pieces in various colors that match the real-life markings on the supercarrier ship. Nimitz’s catapults, arresting gear, jet blast deflectors, hatches and hundreds of aircraft padeyes are all represent-
ed by various shades of gray. As one of the largest-scale representations of an aircraft carrier flight deck in the world, visitors will see what it is like to walk across the flight deck of one of America’s most recognizable symbols of peacekeeping machinery. “We are very excited to add this impressive exhibit to the See Nimitz on page 2
