NASP Safety Office hosts safety stand-down From NAS Pensacola Public Affairs

Service members and civilian employees assigned to Commander, Navy Region Southeast’s (CNRSE) largest installation attended a May 15 series of presentations designed to increase awareness of summer safety concerns at the Naval Air Station (NAS) Pensacola Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) Mustin Beach Club Ballroom onboard NAS Pensacola. The NAS Pensacola Safety Office-sponsored Safety Stand-down, a series of briefs designed to raise service members’ and civilian employees’ awareness of seasonal safety hazards during the summer months, directly aligns with the Naval Safety Center-driven “101 Critical Days of Summer” campaign, according to NASP Safety Director Jon Winters. “The Department of Defense and Navy historically experienced an increased number of off-duty fatalities and injuries during the summer months,” Winters said. “Presentations such as this (safety stand-down) are de-

signed to ensure we have 100 percent awareness of some of the common mishaps DoD installations see and offer methods of reducing these incidences.” Service members and their families historically participate in numerous recreational activities during Memorial Day weekend and throughout the summer, prompting a DoD-wide effort to mitigate the risk of injury by educating personnel and reinforcing methods of avoiding potential mishaps with the “101 Critical Days of Summer” program. “Safety should be on the forefront of our minds all year and not just during a safety standdown,” NAS Pensacola Commanding Officer Capt. Tim Kinsella Jr. said. “Safety isn’t something you think about just before an activity – you should be thinking about safety before, during and after an activity that is potentially dangerous.” The safety stand-down included a segment on hurricane preparation, something NAS Pensacola Emergency Manager Burt Fenters said is critical as

Navy announces exercise training precautions From Chief of Naval Personnel Public Affairs

WASHINGTON (NNS) – Navy released NAVADMIN 108/19 May 10 alerting Sailors and command leadership of the importance of universal training precautions (UTP) to reduce the risk of exercise-related collapse and death during physical exercise, to include the Physical Readiness Test (PRT) and command physical training. As part of military readiness, Sailors are expected to maintain a high level of fitness. With PRT season on-

going throughout the Navy, this guidance is especially critical to ensure the safety of all Sailors. It is imperative for commanders and key leadership personnel, including command fitness leaders (CFL), to foster an exercise culture that promotes UTP, recognizes the early signs of distress and promptly terminates exertional activity when individuals display clear signs of distress. All personnel present during a training evolution or PRT can encourage good performance, but should

NAS Pensacola FFSC, NEX and Navy Lodge observe Military Spouse Appreciation Day From NAS Pensacola Public Affairs

During a two-hour event at the Navy Exchange (NEX) May 10, military spouses were presented Military Spouse Appreciation Day proclamations, various gifts and flowers.

east and and there are so many spouses here. Working together with the NEX and Navy Lodge to help celebrate and recognize the job and sacrifices military spouses have in the United States Armed Forces is important to us.” NASP Ombudsman Gloria Nettles also attended the event, and stressed that the role spouses have historically played is crucial to the continued success of the U.S. military. “The spouse has always played a part in ensuring our nation’s service members continue to support and defend our nation,” she said. “Events such as this demonstrate that NAS Pensacola commands are there to provide assistance to not only the service member, but the family they hold dear.” See Spouses on page 2

be on guard for signs that a participant is struggling and be ready to terminate the evolution. The Navy’s PRT portion of the Physical Fitness Assessment is intended as a measure of long-term health and wellness – not of individual athletic prowess. No one should risk their life by pushing through life-threatening conditions during a PRT. Some highlights from the NAVADMIN are listed below, but every Sailor should read the full message.
