NHP Physical Rodeo April 27 ... Naval Hospital Pensacola’s annual School/Sports/Camp Physical Rodeo

will kick off April 27 from 8 a.m. to noon. The rodeo allows parents enrolled to the Family Medicine Clinic to bring their children to the hospital on specific Saturdays throughout the summer to complete a physical. The physical exams are for children 4 and older, including children new to the area. Appointments are encouraged; however walk-ins will be accepted from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Remember to bring any required paperwork to the rodeo. NAS Pensacola prepares for hurricane season

Naval Air Station (NAS) Pensacola will be participating in a natural disaster preparedness exercise, Hurricane Exercise/ Citadel Gale 2019 (HURREX/CG 19), April 15 to April 29.

This annual exercise prepares the Navy to respond to adverse weather threats in U.S. coastal regions, and to maintain the ability to deploy forces even under the most severe weather conditions. HURREX/CG 19 will involve a simulated storm system developing and in-

tensifying to hurricane strength, threatening the East Coast and Gulf of Mexico regions.

NAS Pensacola will be one of all Navy commands representing Navy Region Mid-Atlantic, Naval District Washington and Navy Region Southeast. Each will participate by reviewing and exercising heavy weather instructions, procedures and accounting for Sailors, Department of the Navy civilians and Navy families in the affected regions through the Navy Family Accountability and Assessment System (NFAAS).

The Naval Air Station (NAS) Pensacola Navy Exchange (NEX), Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) department and the Defense Commissary Agency (DeCA) are scheduled to host a “Welcome Aboard Weekend” celebration April 26 and 27 onboard NAS Pensacola.

The “Welcome Aboard Weekend,” designed to provide an opportunity for newly-reported service members and

family members an entertaining arrival to the “Cradle of Naval Aviation,” is hosted by NEX Pensacola, MWR and DeCA, and is scheduled to include a variety of activities and events including a 5K run, a series of musical performances, stuntman demonstrations, gaming

contests and a magician.

Additionally, throughout the weekend, service members and their families will have the opportunity to sign-up for NEX mobile contests and coupons.

Naval Air Station (NAS) Pensacola service members and civilian employees participated in a nationwide initiative designed to promote awareness of sexual assault and bring messages of support to victims of sexual assault April 12 onboard NAS Pensacola.

“Chalk the Walk,” sponsored by the NAS Pensacola Fleet and Family Support Center (FFSC), was observed at NAS Pensacola areas.

“This is an easy, creative and fun way to increase awareness about a sensitive topic,” Mica Harrell, the NAS Pensacola FFSC Sexual Assault Prevention and Response (SAPR) Civilian Victim Advocate said.

“Messages paired with creative images really resonate with people and result in impactful reactions. This also allows survivors to use their voice to express how they were affected and feel supported by their peers.”

Navy survey to address privatized housing issues From NAS Pensacola Public Affairs

As a result of recent concerns of sub-standard privatized housing conditions across the military branches, Chief of Naval Operations John Richardson has directed an “out of cycle” housing survey be given to all Sailors currently living in the housing.

The intent of the survey, which will be conducted from April 2 to 30 by an independent third party, is to determine residents’ overall satisfaction with privatized housing, to include health and safety concerns.

What makes the survey unique is that it is being conducted on behalf of the Navy, which is different than past annual surveys that were con-

ducted on behalf of the five companies that provide Navy privatized housing.

Sailors through the survey will also be able to note their likes and dislikes with privatized housing, concerns they may have regarding their homes, community and services provided by the privatized housing management companies as well as overall satisfaction.

All Sailors living in privatized housing are strongly encouraged to participate in the survey. They will receive a letter, which will provide information on how to access the survey, from CEL & Associates, Inc., which is an independent third party that will conduct and manage the survey.

In light of issues recently raised by service members and families, the Navy has also conducted town hall meetings and “walk throughs” where residents volunteer to have leadership check out their houses. In addition, the Navy is working with housing partners to ensure maintenance and repairs are conducted and other issues are addressed.

The Navy is also conducting a survey April 2 to June 20 for Sailors living in unaccompanied housing. A survey for Sailors and families living in government-owned or government-leased housing was launched March 19 and runs through June 6.

SAAPM is observed annually by the Department of Defense (DoD), which is focused on creating an appropriate culture to eliminate sexual assault and requiring a personal commitment from all service members at every level.

“Each of us have a role in standing up against sexual assault,” Harrell said. “The DoD and Navy have taken a firm stance on eliminating sexual assault from their ranks, and the FFSC here – as well as throughout the U.S. Armed Forces – are committed to ensuring victims receive the proper care they need, and that every individual here is aware of reporting procedures and the zero tolerance policy NAS Pensacola, the Navy and the DoD have toward sexual assault.”

Harrell also added that each command onboard NAS Pensacola has at least two uniformed SAPR Victim Advocates who serve on weekly watch bills to respond to incidents of sexual assault around the clock. Additionally, DOD Safe Helpline (877-995-5247), a completely anonymous and confidential crisis line, is available 24 hours a day for individuals in need of information and assistance with reporting a sexual assault.

HURLBURT FIELD, Fla. – Retired Lt. Col. Richard “Dick” Cole, the last surviving member of the Doolittle Raid and an original Air Commando, passed away at the age of 103, April 9.

Cole made a lasting impact on Air Force Special Operations Command, Hurlburt Field, Fla. “He was an Air Commando that understood the responsibility of freedom,” Lt. Gen. Brad Webb, AFSOC commander said. “He was, in every sense of the word, a hero.”

Cole enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps in November of 1940, commissioning as a second lieutenant in July of 1941. During World War II, in January and February of 1942, Cole volunteered for a top secret mission under the command of Lt. Col. James H. “Jimmy” Doolittle.

The mission was to conduct air raids against Japan following the attack on Pearl Harbor Dec. 7, 1941. Members who volunteered for the mission became known as the Doolittle Raiders. They carried out the first air raid on April 18, 1942.

While Ely had taken off from the USS Birmingham two months earlier after his plane had been loaded on the ship, the USS Pennsylvania event was the first time a plane landed on and then took off from a U.S. warship.

The mission, supporting those defending China, spanned the 530-mile long passage over the Himalayan Mountains. When Cole finished the Hump, he returned home.

Shortly after returning home, Cole received a phone call from Col. Johnny Alison, who was forming the 1st Air Commando Group. The elite group carried

Navy’s most modern fighter aircraft, the F/A18 Super Hornet.

Established in 1921 as the Air Station News, the name Gosport was adopted in 1936. A gosport was a voice tube used by flight instructors in the early days of naval aviation to give instructions and directions to their students. The name “Gosport” was derived from Gosport, England (originally God’s Port), where the voice tube was invented.

Cole served as a pilot of the C-47 Skytrain and engineering officer for the transport section.

While he was in the India-Burma sector, Cole landed more than 200 soldiers deep behind enemy lines to establish an airfield. This occurred during Operation Thursday, otherwise known as the birth of the Air Commandos.

“Lt. Col. Cole’s legend will forever live on in our AFSOC community,” Chief Master Sgt. Gregory Smith, AFSOC command chief said. “It’s Airmen like him that pave the way for the future of AFSOC and our Air Commandos.”

Update: My car thinks I’m an idiot

our fuel level is low. Would you like to navigate to the nearest gas station?” an unfamiliar male voice called out. I glanced at the other seats in my new car, but I was entirely alone. Then I saw the words displayed across my vehicle’s digital screen.

My car was talking to me.

More specifically, it was passively-aggressively telling me what to do. It was the first time it had asked me a direct question since I bought the car back in January. But I wasn’t surprised.

In the last few months, I had learned that my new car most certainly believed it was smarter than I am.

Ever since we made the $400 trade-in on our 2005 minivan with 240,000 miles on her odometer, I had been driving around in the veritable lap of luxury. My new SUV was better, cleaner, faster and cooler than my old minivan was in every way. However, my new car

brought new problems.

When I drove my old minivan, I was the superior one. Aside from complicated mechanics which I left up to qualified automobile repair shops to deal with, I controlled everything in that vehicle. Having put most of her 240,000 miles on her myself, I knew exactly how to manually adjust the sound system (with its handy-dandy tape deck), the heat and AC, the seat positions, the headlights, the doors, and all other systems. There was no digital display, no voice recognition feature, no navigation system, no Bluetooth capability, no automatic doors,

no heated steering wheel, no keyless start, no camera system.

She was not hands-free, but rather, totally hands-on.

During those meager minivan years, I was a modernday Robinson Crusoe. My minivan was my primitive island, and I was forced to make due. Like Crusoe, “I had nothing to covet, for I had all that I was now capa-

ble of enjoying; I was Lord of the whole Manor (…) I learned to look more upon the bright side of my condition, and less upon the dark side, and to consider what I enjoyed, rather than what I wanted.”

I didn’t complain that the van’s carpets were tainted with years worth of spilled juice boxes and kids’ upchuck, I just spritzed them with Febreeze and carried on. I didn’t gripe when the roof sprouted a leak, I just covered it with duct tape.

I didn’t demand a new car when the door handle fell off, I just got in the other side.

Through ingenuity and self-reliance, I became the Master of my minivan’s Domain. The Lady of the Manor. The Queen of the Castle.

But now I drive a German-engineered vehicle with complicated digital systems that did not exist when my old minivan was manufactured back in 2005.

My new car senses my confusion and takes control, as if I am a complete idiot.

It recognizes my voice, detects my phone, knows everyone in my contact list, turns on my Audible

book to the page where I left off, adjusts my seat to my pre-set specifications, warns me that the gas is too low and offers to find the nearest gas station. It controls the climate inside the car for me, heats my steering wheel and my seat, and knows exactly when a little defrost is needed to avoid fogging up the windows.

It even turns my lights and wipers on when they are needed, and turns them off when they are not.

Despite all this newfangled automation, I still look back after parking the car and wonder, “Is it really going to turn the lights out for me? What if it doesn’t and the battery goes dead?”

Until I learn to trust machines, I’ll wait out in the cold until the lights blink out, just to make sure.

My new car has made it painfully clear that I am unqualified to operate its advanced systems. I wouldn’t be surprised if it snapped at me, “Eh-Eh! Don’t touch!

Let me handle it so you don’t screw anything up.”

Although I don’t want my minivan back, I sometimes yearn for the empowerment I felt when I was Master of my Domain.

Gaither High School named NJROTC Nationals Champions Story, photos

aither High School from Tampa, Fla. claimed this year’s title at the 2019 Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC) National Academic, Athletic and Drill Championship onboard Naval Air Station (NAS) Pensacola April 5 to 6.

The 26 NJROTC units, representing 14 states from coastto-coast, were challenged on their athleticism, tested in academics and evaluated on the drill deck during the competition held at the Naval Air Technical Training Center’s (NATTC) Chevalier Hall.

“It was fantastic to see all the NJROTC units from across the country,” Rear Adm. Mike Bernacchi, commander, Naval Service Training Command (NSTC), who oversees the NJROTC program and was the guest speaker at the awards ceremony said. “Citizenship, character, fitness, that is what this program is all about. The NJROTC cadets that I have met this weekend bring all those characteristics together and remind me that we have incredible instructors, great school systems who run these programs, amazing parents who support and most importantly the most phenomenal young people you will ever meet.”

of Naval Aviation after the competition was finished with participation certificates going to all 26 schools as well as trophies for each category including overall trophies to the top five units.

“It feels unreal right now… just insane,” Cadet Cmdr. Jason Dodson, a senior at Gaither High School said. “So much hard work was put in with us all coming together as a team and being on the same page.”

This year the unit piled up 5,539 points to capture the title. Last year’s champion, Green Run High School from Virginia Beach, Va., came in second with 5,477 points.

Centennial High School from Las Vegas, Nev., finished third with 5,427 points. Troy High School from Fullerton, Calif. was fourth with 5,423 points and Paloma Valley High School from Menifee, Calif., rounded out the Top Five with 5,417 points.

Of the 583 NJROTC units worldwide, 26 qualify for the national competition annually.

In addition to regular classroom instruction, NJROTC cadets participate in a number of extra-curricular activities throughout the school year and during the summer months that are designed to stimulate learning by hands-on experiences and to reinforce the program’s curriculum. Cadet extra-curricular activities include community service projects, drill competitions, academic competitions, visits to naval installations, and Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) training.

U.S. Navy completes developmental testing of Q-20C Towed Mine-hunting Sonar

PANAMA CITY, Fla. – After completing Developmental Testing (DT) in February of 2019, the U.S. Navy is another step closer to delivering the AN/AQS20C (Q-20C) towed minehunting sonar to the Fleet.

The Q-20C has advanced acoustic and electro-optic sensing capabilities that will detect, localize and classify bottom, close-tethered, moored, and volumemoored mines.

According to Naval Surface Warfare Center Panama City Division’s (NSWC PCD) Q-20C Lead Project Engineer Joe Thomas, the Q-20 C variant has in-

creased capabilities, particularly with regard to searching in multiple modes in the water column.

“This is a multi-modal search sonar,” Thomas said.

“When you put the Q-20C sonar sensor in the water, it looks down, to each side, and is also forward-looking.

The C-variant upgraded acoustic array technology as well as an integrated, electro-optic identification sensor. Previous versions of this sensor had to swap the volume-search module for an electro-optic identification module. With the latest improvements, it’s essentially looking everywhere in the surrounding volume of water.”

NSWC PCD is considered the nation’s premier techni-

cal center for Mine Warfare and Mine Countermeasures (MCM). NSWC PCD’s subject matter experts partnered with Q-20C post mission analysis (PMA) operators during this phase of DT to evaluate the system performance with these latest improvements.

Thomas said the improvements implemented into the C-variant ready the system to be integrated with its intended tow platform, the MCM Unmanned Surface Vehicle (MCM USV) in Fiscal Year 2020.

Designated Oct. 8, 2018 as a Program of Record, the MCM USV is a long endur-

ance, semi-autonomous, diesel-powered, all-aluminum surface craft that supports the employment of various MCM payloads.

“The Q-20C will be one of the payloads expected to be deployed from the MCM USV,” Thomas said. “By utilizing both Subject Matter Experts and Fleet Sailors as PMA operators during the Q-20C DT, we were able to better evaluate the system from technical and end-user perspectives. We also experienced significant success with the initial training, the hardware, and the PMA during this phase of testing.”

Thomas reported the PMA operators’ input and recommendations would be reviewed by the technical team for incorporation into the Q-20C for further evaluation and ultimately be useful for the system’s integration with the fleet users in MCM. “We’re excited to finally finish Developmental Testing after the ‘pause’ caused

by Hurricane Michael. This test marks a major milestone in delivering this capability to the Fleet” Thomas said.

PMA operators AGC Larry Pacquer and MN1 Jonathan Roden reported an equally optimistic outlook for the Q-20C’s potential Future Naval Capabilities.

“As part of the Littoral Combat Ship’s MCM Mission Package, this sensor, when deployed by the MCM USV, can help to clear minefields,” Pacquer said.

“Once integrated with its intended tow platform, the Q-20C has the potential to facilitate ships safe passage through maritime channels,” Roden said. “It’s going to be technologies like these that will enable the Navy to remove Sailors from the minefields.”

NAS Whiting Field SITE Program provides resources and guidance for young adults Story, photo

arly morning the yellow bus arrives on the installation and unloads young adults and the guidance begins. The goal is to provide them with help and support as they enter the workforce.

The SITE (Skills for Independence, Transition and Employment) Program has been onboard for 18 consecutive years at Naval Air Station Whiting Field (NASWF).

The SITE Program held a full mock job fair for the students, complete with provided interview clothes, job fair venue and mock interviewers recently. WEAR-TV came out to cover the event and highlight a special visit from Hills-Kelly Dodge that presented a monetary award of $500 dollars to the SITE program.

The event began with greetings at the entrance to the mock job fair where students had to introduce themselves upon entering. Questions filled the room of the anxious interns – “Why don’t you tell me about your work experi-

ence?” as interviewers from various base entities quizzed the interviewees. The SITE instructors were on hand to ease the nervousness and give immediate feedback to the interns.

The SITE Program was established by the Santa Rosa County School District in 2000 with a mission to provide unique educational opportunities for students with disabilities located at NASWF. The program is the result of a partnership between the Exceptional Student Education (ESE) Department, Workforce Education Department and the U.S. Navy.

The program operates with three levels within their program; skills, SITE and Search.

PMOAA scholarship application

The Pensacola Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America (PMOAA) will be awarding scholarships to children, stepchildren, spouses or grandchildren of active-duty, honorably discharged veterans, reservists or retired military personnel (both officer and enlisted).

To be eligible, applicants must be a resident, dependent of a resident or grandchild of a resident of Escambia, Santa Rosa or Baldwin (Ala.) counties, must have completed a minimum of one year at a college/university, with at least a 3.2 GPA if an undergraduate or 3.5 if a graduate student, for the two preceding semesters (fall of 2018 and spring of 2019) as a full time student. Scholarships are $2,000 each.

FemFest 2019 celebrates third year

FemFest has announced its official 2019 lineup featuring new events and old favorites. Dates are set for April 25 to 28. End of Watch Memorial Ruck event

On May 16 to 18, teams of athletes will set out in a relay event to ruck 150 miles across Santa Rosa County over the course of 55 hours. These athletes will work as teams to carry 150 one-pound weights across 150 miles.

Each weight bears the name of an officer who died in the line of duty in 2018. From the pine forests of the north to the beautiful sandy beaches in the south, they will cover the entirety of the county to show support for those who gave their lives in the line of duty.

The event, called the End of Watch Memorial Ruck (#EOWMR), is in its second year and is organized by the End of Watch Foundation (EOWF) and the First Judicial Circuit Law Enforcement Association (FJCLEA).

The event seeks to raise funds for the FJCLEA, an organization whose primary goal is to provide financial support to members of the criminal justice community and their families during times of need and provides charitable support to children’s advocacy organizations.

All funds raised by the EOWMR will go to support the efforts of the FJCLEA. Athletes (ruckers), volunteers and sponsors interested in the event are encouraged to visit www.EOWMR.com for more information.

arth Day was founded in 1970 by Sen. Gaylord Nelson as a grassroots effort to increase awareness of environmental issues.

Since the 1990s, the Department of the Navy and other military services have typically celebrated Earth Day annually with themes, “green” installation events that are open to the public and/or military personnel, participation in community and/or educational outreach activities, and articles or other information products that highlight local Earth Day events and ongoing Navy/Marine Corps environmental and energy programs.

Navy and Marine Corps commands worldwide celebrate Earth Day on the official date of April 22 and throughout the months of April and May, depending on the climate of their operating areas and the nature of their day-to-day missions. Earth Day activities build relationships across command departments, with sister services and government agencies, and the local communities where military personnel live and work.

ight minutes. Eight minutes is all takes to make a crown at one of Naval Hospital Pensacola’s (NHP) Dental Clinics.

Using a computer-aided design (CAD) machine equipped with diamond tip drills, dentists at one of NHP’s Naval Branch Health Clinics (NBHC) with a CAD machine can make and install a crown during the same appointment.

To ensure all the dentists throughout NHP are properly trained and privileged to use the CAD machine, NBHC Naval Air Station Pensacola’s (NASP) Dental Clinic hosted a week of training April 2 through 5. The training allowed new dentists with NHP the opportunity to learn how to make crowns with the CAD machine and for experienced dentists to learn about updates to the machines.

“I love using the (CAD) machine because it helps us to

improve the readiness of the commands we support,” Lt. Cmdr. Doris Lam, a dentist at NBHC Belle Chasse, La., said, referring to active-duty service members she sees at her clinic.

“I can expedite their care with this system.”

With the CAD machine, the dentist takes a digital image of the tooth that needs a crown while the patient is in the dental chair. Once the image is captured, the CAD forms the crown out of a ceramic block and only eight minutes later the dentist can install the crown. Getting a crown used to take two appointments, but can now be done with only one – which decreases amount of training missed by active duty service members.

“We could do about eight or nine crowns a week,” HM2 Jordan Witten, a dental laboratory technician at NBHC NASP said. “With the CAD machines producing crowns, we can now support the dentists in other areas such as

forming night guards and dentures.”

A dental crown is a toothshaped “cap” that is placed over a tooth to restore its shape and strength. A crown will protect a tooth that has been weakened by decay or a broken tooth that has been worn down. While the CAD machines are a great resource, preventing the need for a crown can be achieved with proper oral hygiene.

From staff reports The Pensacola Humane Society brings four-legged, furry-friended goodness downtown. Relish in the glory that is doggos on April 27.

The event lasts from 9 am to 1 pm and is divisible into two parts. The first part consists of a 3K fundraising dog walk that starts at Plaza de Luna and circles around Palafox.

Register to brave the tongue-panting sweat as part of a pack with friends, family or coworkers or as a lone wolf. Although this distinction is an important one it won’t fundamentally change a person’s contribution to the fundraiser.

The distinction between registering with a pack or as a lone wolf offers participants a choice of how they want to experience the dog walk. If you’re the kind of person that likes to walk alone, someone that isn’t interested in the group aspect of the fundraiser, or if your plans have opened up allowing

you to attend the event last-minute, registering as a lone wolf is the way to go.

Regardless of how you decide to experience the event, however, the opportunities offered to participants are the same. This year, Scott Novota of Strong Street Studios has donated pieces of hand-blown glass that he’s crafted to be used as prizes in a Paws on Palafox scavenger hunt. According to the Paws on Palafox event website, the organizers have “hidden six of these beautiful works of art, and three have been given to vendors to hand out at their discretion.”

Additionally, Paws on Palafox will be hosting a costume contest this year as well.

Now, a quick aside for those more concerned with their downtown commute or the economic impact of Paws on Palafox, Flanagan has some good news for you.

Similar to last years event, “we will implement rolling road closures

so that the roads along our route will only be closed as the walkers pass through, allowing businesses to continue their normal Saturday business operations as well as benefit from any additional revenue that Paws on Palafox can bring.”

The specific goal for this event is to raise $40,000 for the Barbara Grice Memorial Low Cost Spay and Neuter Clinic. “In order to be able to provide low-cost spay and neuter services to our area, it is necessary to raise funds from our community to cover the inherent expenses that we incur,” Flanagan said. One important note to remember is that the PHS is not funded by any governmental entity but solely by the community.

For those people interested in contributing to the PHS by participating in the Paws on Palafox dog walk, registration costs $30 and includes a bandana for your furry friend. For an additional $20 to the registration fee participants will receive a Paws on Palafox T-shirt supplies are limited.

Online registration prior to the event will remain open until 5 pm on April 26, and check-in for preregistered participants and registration for new participants will start at 9 a.m. on the day of the event. If, however, you can’t attend Paws on Palafox or do not want to participate in the walk, the PHS accepts individual donations as well.
