A Letter From The E.C.M.S. President The ninth edition of the Escambia County Medical Society Membership directory is now in print. It includes the member physicians of Escambia and Santa Rosa counties. This valuable asset to your practice contains the member physicians’ name, specialty, NPI number, practice address, phone number, fax number and email address. Additionally, hospital contacts, managed care contacts and county health department contacts are provided. The directory includes up to date requirements regarding CME and licensure. We host important membership meetings which provide our physicians with the needed mandatory CME credits for re-licensure focusing on: risk management, domestic violence and prevention of medical errors. We also offer information concerning other important topics such as asset protection, physician burnout, HIPPA compliance and debt management. The ECMS hosts the Women in Medicine brunch annually. ECMS members also receive additional benefits including: discounted medical malpractice polices and workers compensation insurance. An additional member benefit is a consultation from The Florida Health Care Law Firm if needed. We work to facilitate networking with other physicians in the community at our monthly meetings. Our society has strong representation at the Florida Medical Association with 10 representatives to the House of Delegates. We encourage new and current members to become a FMA delegate or to draft a resolution that we can take to the House of Delegates. We have created a strategic plan for ECMS to help strengthen our membership and keep our society relevant to our members. The details of our strategic plan are also included in this directory. The Escambia County Medical Society in conjunction with Santa Rosa County [E.C.M.S.] is a local professional association of medical doctors and doctors of osteopathy (M.D.’s & D.O.’s), that addresses political, social, and economic issues concerning the level and delivery of healthcare for patients and physicians. Started in 1873, the non-profit E.C.M.S. represents over 400 physicians living or working in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties of Northwest Florida. Mission: The mission of the Escambia County Medical Society is to advance physicians’ practice of medicine in our community. Vision: Tradition – Honoring the history of medical care in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties. Service – Serving the needs of our community through the service of our members in the practice of medicine. Leadership – Meeting the challenges of the future and safeguarding our community’s health through organized collaboration on the local, state, and national level. The Escambia County Medical Society Foundation is the philanthropic arm of the Medical Society. It is your Foundation, funded by your contributions, and the ongoing programs provide focused care to the citizens of Escambia and Santa Rosa Counties. We are proud of it—not all medical societies have a charitable division. We Care Program is the oldest and was initiated in 1992 under the leadership of Drs. Stuart Shippey, Reed Bell, Donna Jacobi and others. This program enrolls physicians to donate services to those who cannot afford them. It has made an immeasurable impact on numerous lives in our area. The following were honored at the recent ECMS Inaugural Ball. • • • •
Dr. Raymond Noellert: 2017 Bell-Shippey We Care Doctor of the Year, with highest individual treatments and dollars provided. Pensacola Pathologists: Facility with most donated services. Coastal Vascular & Interventional: Facility with highest indirect dollar amount. Gastroenterology Associates of Pensacola: Medical Group with most services and indirect dollar amount.
The total contributions for 2017 included hospital donations of $2M and physician donations of $600,000. Thank you to everyone who participated. But remember—the more that volunteer, the better the outcomes and the easier fr patients to be seen. Consider joining the We Care Program. Go Seniors Program is a program facilitated by the Foundation that issues vouchers to help elderly patients with transportation needs to doctors offices. These vouchers provided over $7,000 worth of cab fares last year to enable these patients to obtain the care they needed. Your donations combined with a grant from the Fellows Memorial Fund has enabled this program to thrive. Blood Pressure Cuff Program was initiated last year by the Foundation to supply patients with cuffs to monitor their hypertension. Almost 400 cuffs have been provided to Health and Hope, Good Samaritan, St. Joseph and Escambia County Clinics. The positive feedback has been tremendous and we plan to continue this through 2018. Pensacola State College Endowment is a partnership between ECMS Foundation and PSC to award scholarships to students pursuing degrees in healthcare. A total of four scholarships were awarded last year, and we hope for even more this year. FSU Medical Student Scholarships is an endowment in conjunction with the Pensacola regional campus. An initial $100,000 contribution through the Foundation was made to create it, and it has grown since that time. Recent Wine Gala and Bourbon, Beer, and Boil fundraisers were held to increase the number of scholarships available. They were very successful, and enjoyed by all who attended! In March the Foundation hosted a Diamonds and Denim Fundraiser at Bere’ Jewelry. Additionally, the ECMS Foundation has participated in other various charitable endeavors. It has provided prizes to local science fair winners, money for public service billboards, and enabled a project to bridge the gap between hospital and home care. In 2017 the ECMS Foundation created the 1873 Society, a campaign to raise awareness and fundraise for projects. Donors who pledge $3000 or more in three years are recognized on a plaque at all society meetings and events. It is your participation in these programs that keep it all going. The money for the Foundation comes from tax deductible donations from our members. Please consider this as you review your charitable giving for 2018. Kurt A. THE 1873 SOCIETY Since 1873, Escambia and Santa Rosa County Medical Society physicians have dedicated themselves to their patients and the people of Escambia/ Santa Rosa County. To further our mission and build on the loyal support of our members, the Board of Directors approved the formation of The 1873 Society, a special recognition opportunity to formally honor physicians who contribute to our organization and have demonstrated a long-term commitment to the quality of health care and well-being of our community. Family planning also provides abstinence counseling and information about natural family planning. Participants will receive a clinical exam by a nurse practitioner or doctor. This exam includes a pelvic and a pap test (if due) to screen for cervical cancer. The cost for birth control is based upon ability to pay. Call for more information or to schedule an appointment. Healthy Start 850-595-6641 Healthy Start coordinates services, for pregnant women and children ages 0 to 3 years, to support healthy birth outcomes and early childhood development. Immunizations 850-595-6500, option 2 FDOH-Escambia offers immunizations for children and adults. All childhood and adolescent immunizations are offered in accordance with the Bureau of Immunizations Schedule and the Florida School Guidelines. No-cost vaccinations are available to children from six weeks through 18 years of age. Clients who are 19 years old and older may qualify for the Adult Vaccine Program that offers a certain vaccines for $18 each. Osteopathic Physicians licensed in the first year of the biennium must complete the 40 hours above to include 1 hour of HIV/AIDS. Domestic Violence is not a requirement for the first renewal. Medical Doctors renewing a license for the first time are exempt from the general continuing medical education requirements and are only required to complete 2 hours of Medical Errors and a 1 hour AMA Category I, HIV/AIDS course Courses approved by any state or federal government agency or nationally affiliated professional association or any provider of Category I American Medical Association Continuing Medical Education; Any post graduate training program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education; The following specialty training: American College of Emergency Physicians, Cat I; American Academy of Family Physicians prescribed credit; American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists cognates; and study courses required by those specialty certification boards approved by the Board for the purpose of sitting for specialty recertification examinations 5 hours for attending a regular meeting of the Board of Medicine Up to 15 for serving as a volunteer expert witness 5 hours for a current Board Member serving on a Probable Cause Panel of the Board of Medicine 6 hours for serving as a supervising physician 3 hours for serving as a monitoring physician 5 hours for performing pro bono medical services 6458‐ 13.005(9)
