Before I dive into this month’s issue I want touch on a few things to look forward to in July. If you don’t already have plans for the 4th, look into the Belmont-Devilliers July Fourth Independence Day Festival. It’s a new festival and they’re going to close off Belmont and DeVilliers to have watermelon eating contests, BBQ cook-offs and the like. Should be a good time.

The ongoing construction on Palafox is a headache to be sure, but Gulf Power says they have to upgrade lines to keep up with downtown development. Better to have growing pains than no growth.

Vintage paintings at the Apple Market

At the Apple Market, you expect to find certain things.

Apples, tomatoes, chicken and even some canned food.

What you may not be expecting to find is a small art gallery next to the deli. Surprise!

The gallery features several local artists throughout the year, but there’s a very special exhibit happening right now courtesy of Apple Market’s tomato vendor, Joseph T. Cunningham. Cunningham found the artworks in his attic.

After purchasing his house 22 years ago, Cunningham found paintings left behind from the previous owner. The paintings were from the 1950s to 1970s, the work of the original builder of the house, Fred Gustave Hassebrock. Now, he’s decided to share these incredible pieces with customers of the Apple Market, featuring one of Pensacola’s vintage artists.

Hassebrock was born in Missouri in 1903, where he lived with his grandparents for many years. During his school years, he learned half of the time in English and the other half in German.

He then moved to Pensacola, where he worked as a farmer. Due to the hard work needed on the farm, he stopped attending school, but there was one thing he never stopped. He sketched, he drew and he painted. Later on, he would be hired by the shipyard then the Naval Air Station to work as an illustrator drafting

maps and house plans, a skill he learned with no formal training. He died in June of 1978.

Although never formally trained as an artist, Hassebrock became a talented and prolific artist. He served as president of the Pensacola Art Club, taught classes from an art studio he had built behind his home and was even hired to help decorate the San Carlos Hotel according to his daughter Mary Ann Johnson.

“That was his hobby. I very seldom ever saw him ever sit down and watch TV in the evening or anything like that,” she said. “If he wasn’t working on a house plan or something for somebody else, he would paint. He would go out and start his pictures in the outdoors where he’d sketch them from sight. Then he would bring them back home and finish them at night.”

Most of Hassebrock’s work centered around Pensacola and things seen in Pensacola, Star Lake, the San Carlos Hotel, the train station, the old pine trees on Scenic Highway. He used a palette knife for almost all of his later works, including the paintings on display at the Apple Market. Johnson said he enjoyed the three-dimensional effect of using the knife versus using a brush, though sometimes he would use a brush as well.

During the Great Depression, he was hired to create artwork for the National Art Museum in Washington D.C. as a part of government programs to find work for people. Johnson said he was sometimes featured in one-man art shows and recently had a small art show in Molino, Florida. Since his passing, he has also been featured at the T.T. Wen-

to be unique, emotional, speaks to your heart. That art right there is all about that.”

This latest gallery at the Apple Market is part of an ongoing project to uplift local art and artists at the locally owned grocery store.

The gallery featuring Hassebrock will be ongoing through July, with many of his paintings for sale. Cunningham has said he has 50 to 100 paintings to share and Sargent said the gallery will change as pieces are sold and Cunningham brings in new work. The featured painting is of Star Lake and is the largest of the paintings Cunningham found in the house.

“We’re a gallery of local artists, so that’s the first requirement and he was local,” Karen Sargent, the manager of the art gallery, said. “Secondly, I wanted the art

FRESH FACES, NEW IDEAS Downtown Improvement Board gets new members

New blood on one of the city’s most impactful boards could mean a new vision for downtown Pensacola.

The Downtown Improvement Board will welcome three new members this month, shifting the board’s governance from appointees made by former mayor Ashton Hayward to ones made by mayor Grover Robinson.

The three new DIB members are Adam Cobb, director of the Emmanual, Sheppard & Condon law firm, Jean Pierre N’Dione, co-owner and manager of Five Sisters Blues Café and Angelena’s Italian Ristorante and Kevin Lehman, co-owner of Pure Barre and Fosko Coffee Barre.

The new members will replace longtime former chairman John Peacock, as well as the board’s most recent chairwoman Dee Dee Davis and Charlie Switzer, whose terms expired in June.

To the extent that the average downtown visitor has heard of the DIB at all, it’s likely been in connection with the botched rollout of a parking management system last summer. Insufficient communication by the board led to mass confusion and frustration among downtown visitors and business owners. The resulting turmoil contributed to the resignation of the board’s executive director and calls from then-candidate Robinson to fix the system.

Despite garnering headlines for the parking debacle, the DIB has done much good to further the mission of making downtown a vibrant cultural and commercial destination for residents, businesses and visitors. The board originated Gallery Night, Palafox Market and the First City Festival of Lights, three events that have grown to become staples of downtown’s cultural calendar.

The DIB later offloaded management of Gallery Night and the Pelican Drop to other organizations. More recently, the board has begun work to activate and improve the alleyway between the Jefferson Street parking garage and business on Palafox Street.

Still, the parking problem persists. Today, two parking management companies, Passport Parking and Premium Parking, operate two different smartphone apps to manage lots and spaces throughout downtown. As mayor, Robinson has said the DIB’s top priority must be to fix downtown parking.

Robinson has pointed to reforms proposed by parking expert Donald Shoup who presented as part of the CivicCon speakers series in October. Shoup proposed a pricing model that changes with demand and the elimination of offstreet parking requirements.

Robinson selected the three new DIB members based on their willingness to work with City Hall to fix the parking problem, as well as their interest in see-

telling anybody anything just leads to confusion. Citizens have to be educated on how things work and the DIB has to find the best way to do that. “

“I look at Palafox and it looks great and there’s all kinds of great things happening throughout downtown,” Cobb said. “I think my goal is to make sure we keep a progressive vision and work toward progressive and inclusive development, something that makes downtown better for everyone. With three of us coming in at once, I think there may be an opportunity to have fresh discussions.”

Lehman was among the most vocal critics of the DIB’s parking rollout last summer, going so far as to hang a large red sign downtown encouraging citizens to take their frustrations straight to the DIB’s monthly meeting. Not one to bellyache about a problem he isn’t willing to help solve, Lehman went on to join the DIB’s parking committee.

He’s since helped to cut parking prices at the Jefferson Street garage and ditch Premium Parking in favor of Passport.

N’Dione said he recognizes that parking is the big issue facing the DIB, but said he wants time to learn the scope of the board’s operations and hear from citizens and businesses within the district.

“I think it’s going to be a learning process for me, then just go from there and try to bring my vision and ideas that I have to try to improve what they’ve been doing,” he said.

When the time does come to tackle parking, N’Dione said he expects a compromise will be necessary.

“Downtown is growing, so we will have to have some revenue to maintain and improve the district, so money has to come from somewhere,” said N’Dione.

“At the same time, I think an education aspect has to be part of process. Putting a meter out somewhere without

In addition to collecting parking revenue, the DIB is primarily funded through the collection of a special tax assessed to property owners within the district. Lehman said he wants to evaluate whether those property owners are getting value equivalent to what they’re paying.

“The number one priority for me is judging what kind of return on investment the downtown property owners are getting from the DIB,” he said. “My loyalty is 100 percent to the people paying the bills and I have no loyalty to the DIB as an organization because it’s only job is to serve the people paying the bills.”

The three new DIB members will begin serving in July.

The newest high-rise in the downtown area is the Southtowne Apartment complex, home to approximately 250 apartments right off of Jefferson Street. At less than two years old, the building’s bottom floor boasts several retail spaces available for new locally owned and operated businesses to join in the community. While there are still some empty spaces, most of the retail shops have been claimed, with some already open to the public.

With three open stores and two more on their way, Southtowne is quickly becoming a hub of community, bringing people off of Palafox Street and over onto Jefferson. Never checked it out? Here’s what you have to look forward to your next trip downtown.

OLD CITY MARKET Ever been walking through downtown and have a sudden craving for a candy bar? Or maybe you have relatives visiting town that forgot to bring soap. Old City Market’s got you covered. As downtown Pensacola’s only convenience store, it has household items, toiletries, snacks and much more. The market’s true claim to fame though, is their old fashioned soda fountain.

Taking from the history books of Pensacola, co-owners Cristi and Lauren Sceca decided on the soda

fountain because of its significance in Pensacola.

“The main reason we wanted to open the store is the old soda fountain in something Pensacola used to have,” Cristi said. “It’s part of the history. The old generations used to use these old soda fountains and we wanted to bring that back.”

Old City Market is open Monday through Thursday 9 am to 7 pm, Friday and Saturday 9 am to 9 pm and Sunday noon to 6 pm.

BODACIOUS BOOKSTORE AND CAFÉ The newest, and maybe the most exciting, addition to the Bodacious stores, this halfbookstore, half-café will offer the excellent coffee and brews of Bodacious Brew with the added bonus of books to read and browse. With a large children’s area to inspire a love of books and reading, plus Saturday story times and events every month, this shop will become your go-to place to relax.

“We’re thrilled that it’s coming along,” Rishy Studer, owner of the Bodacious Bookstore and Café, said. “The fact that you have 250 apartments there with people that live right above you and would love to come in and get a book, join a book

club. It’s just one more thing that makes us a better place to live.”

Although the bookstore is not yet open, Manager Crissy Nettles is hard at work preparing to open this summer and is excited to be a part of the community.

“I want you to come in and fall in love with something you didn’t even know existed,” she said. “I love hand-selling books. Finding the right book for the right person at the right time is just a gift. It absolutely is.”

The bookstore is aiming to open toward the end of the summer.

Mahogany, cypress, leather, marble and glass blend in a swirl of rich browns, deep greens and gentle creams to create an aura of lush refinement.

Simpson worked hard to restore the building to as close to its original design as possible, and his attention to detail shows.

Simpson isn’t keen to say how much he’s spent on bringing the building up to its current state, only that project has been a labor of love and that he doesn’t expect to make his investment back any time soon.

For a club that will admit fewer than 400 members at the rate $175 a month and charge $100 per entry to non-members, the space is exquisite.

The Establishment is the vision of Stephen Simpson, former owner of Heliworks and one of five partners working to redevelop the former Escambia County School District Building on Garden Street.

The Establishment officially opened on July 1. Membership in the club comes with a $50 credit to purchase fine wines, whiskeys, cognacs and scotches at a discounted rate from a wall of self-serve taps. Simpson said fine cigars are on the way.

Any kind of cocktail a member might want can be prepared by onsite staff. The club also offers members a concierge service to arrange travels plans, tee times, anniversary gifts and other needs members may have.

Simpson’s CFO, Teri Tucker, said the idea was to create a one-of-kind experience unlike anything else downtown.

“I think Pensacola in the past 20 years has been catering to tourists, where Steve saw the opportunity to cater to the locals,” Tucker said. “We are off of Palafox, so anybody is welcome but we aren’t going to get the standard walking-by traffic. It’s more of a destination.”

BY KAITLYN PEACOCK 1. Tell me about your photography. How did you start?

Sophia: At a young age, maybe end of grammar school, beginning of high school, we were both already interested in visual arts. I was painting and Yvanna was interested in photography. She had a Nikon and was using PhotoShop, teaching herself. That’s something we carried through high school. We were interested in visual arts but neither of us were really encouraged to pursue it as a career, really any career in design or art. It got put on the backburner for years.… My sister and I both just have an eye and a passion for art and photography. We talked about it for years, comparing notes on what we liked and how we wanted to create together. We had all these ideas. We would see something and think we could do better, create our own version. It was a 16 | DOWNTOWNCROWD.COM

topic of conversation for a long time. I finally was in a position to pursue it full time, as was Yvanna. That was about two years ago and last year Yvanna was able to join me.

2. You focus a lot on women and the female figure. What draws you to this image?

Sophia: We are strong believers in empowering women. It’s a hard world out there for women, obviously, and even when supporting each other, it’s something that some women struggle with.

That’s just because of our history and societal norms, just the challenges that we face. We really want to lift each other up and bring out the beauty that every woman has and the potential that every woman has. It’s a beautiful thing to shoot someone that you admire or you’re close

with, to bring out their confidence and their beauty, for them to feel it.

3. Most of the women you photograph are women of color. You have a lot of women of different ethnicities and cultures. Is that a focus of yours?

Yvanna: Oh yes, that’s something that we spoke about and we came to an understanding that if we’re going to do this, this is important to us, that we portray black and brown people, to put them on a pedestal and just display their beauty and to create a space for them. In Pensacola, there’s not a lot of that, especially with photography. You don’t see that very often. Being women of color ourselves, we’re both Latina, we wanted to make that a priority.

4. How do you decide how you are going to build a scene for a shoot? What’s your process?

Yvanna: Well, it really depends on who we are shooting. I usually get inspiration from that person and what I want to portray from that specific person. I just build off of that. I do get inspiration from other photographers or things that I’ve seen out and about, but it’s definitely a team effort.

We both work together to add something

to the style of the shoot, and we just have fun with it. This is something that’s still new to us, so we are still learning and creating our own style but it’s been fun. It’s an expression of our creativity.

5. How is it getting to work with your sister?

Yvanna: I feel really lucky and really blessed to learn from Sophia. She’s my older sister and she definitely leads in a lot of things. She’s very wise and graceful with her decisions and her thought process, it’s nice to work with her. We have a really strong balance between the both us.

Sophia: This is something that I’ve wanted for a long time, I’ve dreamt it up and manifested it. I want to bring her with me on this journey. It’s a dream come true to be able to do this with her. I think it’s amazing that we both have the same eye and very similar tastes. It makes the world less lonely since I have someone to share that with. It’s a beautiful thing.

The torchbearer of L.A.’s beat scene and the spiritual successor to J. Dilla himself returns from a four-year hiatus with a sprawling fusion of jazz, funk and hip-hop with features from some of music’s most compelling vocalists and performers. Given that description, you would be forgiven for thinking Flamagra is better than it is. It’s weird; every second of Flamagra is as expertly crafted and original as only FlyLo could make them. The album is a technical masterpiece. Yet taken as whole, the album is a disjointed, confusing collection of ideas lacking any sort of unifying theme. It’s like the mind of a mad genius jumping from one project to the

next without considering the collective result. A Frankenstein album, if you will.

Twenty-six year old Australian Harriette Pilbeam, aka Hatchie, burst onto the global indie music scene last year with her excellent Sugar & Spice EP that had critics likening the singersongwriter to dream pop acts like Mazzy Star, Cocteau Twins and Beach House. Expectations were set high for her full-length debut, which arrived last month in the form of Keepsake.

Pilbeam has acknowledged in interviews that her writing on Sugar & Spice was sophomoric, so there was reason to hope that she would improve on Keepsake. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen. There’s not a bad track on the album, but nor is there any depth.

Put this one on at the beach and don’t worry about listening too closely.

First City Art Center Pop Up Art Show at Duh

July 13 This must-see event features the world-famous Blue Angels performing over Pensacola Beach on Santa Rosa Island. Civilian acts beginning at noon with Blues flying at 2 pm.

Yoga in the Park
