A WORD FROM THE DOWNTOWN IMPROVEMENT BOARD Honoring the Past, Enhancing the Present, Securing the Future The Downtown Improvement Board (DIB) was conceived by downtown property owners, then formally created by an act of the Florida legislature in 1972. For nearly 50 years the DIB has been entirely funded by property owners inside its district boundaries, yet the positive effects of the organization are enjoyed by visitors and patrons from across Pensacola, the U.S. and the world. The DIB’s primary focus areas have remained constant, to preserve property values, spur economic development, attract re-investment in Pensacola’s urban core and beautify downtown. These foundational goals serve as a compass, guiding the work we do.

Through the years the DIB has been an ever-present, often behind-the-scenes, organization that is powered by a volunteer board of directors and small staff who never stop striving to ensure that downtown Pensacola is a great place to live, work and play. Our vibrant district is attracting visionaries and entrepreneurs to its historic streets and creating a momentum that will take us into the upcoming year; during the past fiscal year downtown Pensacola welcomed a new hotel, restaurants, reimagined historic landmarks, unique retail shops and galleries, 258-apartment residential development, multistory YMCA complex and more. The DIB will keep working hard to nurture a community that is safe, clean, wellmanaged and vibrant—to take care of the details that make downtown Pensacola “Florida’s Greatest Place.”

Looking ahead, there is still some time to light up your night in downtown Pensacola at the DIB First City Lights Festival. Half a million bright

lights will continue to illuminate our historic streets until Jan. 13, so don’t miss out. The light festival is Downtown Improvement Board’s biggest annual event, and the board and staff are grateful for the support received from Visit Pensacola and the City of Pensacola, which continues to make the First City Lights Festival a reality.

The DIB will officially launch a new parking app, Passport, in February.

The app is in use in cities all over the world and will provide a simple way to pay for parking at both DIB-managed lots, on-street parking spaces or inside the Jefferson St. Garage. Better yet, the app will cost less for parkers— when you extend an existing parking session using the Passport app, there’s no surcharge, no matter how many times you extend your session.

For now, the Premium Parking app, any pay machine or parking meter may be used to pay to park at either of the DIB-managed lots, on-street parking and the Jefferson St. Garage.

On Jan. 5, Palafox Market will transform into Mardi Gras Market to officially launch the 2019 Mardi Gras season, in partnership with Pensacola Mardi Gras. We invite you to shop and chat with small regional farmers, artists and craftsmen offering fresh, locally grown produce and hand-crafted goods from 9 am until 2 pm. KEEPING ART CINEMA IN PENSACOLA

On a recent rainy Saturday in downtown Pensacola, a group of about 40 people gathered in the first floor of the Bowden Building behind the T.T. Wentworth Museum to watch a rockclimbing documentary.

The film, Free Solo, has not received a wide release, but the moviegoers that Saturday were able to see it thanks largely to the efforts of one retired snowbird named Jim Norton.

Norton spent a career buying and renovating old theaters, including the Gulf Breeze Cinema 4, which Norton opened in 2004 and sold when he retired in 2012.

That theatre eventually closed under new ownership, but Norton stayed in the area.

“In the probably 10 years that I owned Cinema 4, the biggest request I had was

Today, as head of Pensacola Cinema Art, Norton does just that. Norton began Pensacola Cinema Art in 2015, showing art films and documentaries at properties owned by the University of West Florida Historic Trust including the Voices of Pensacola building, the Museum of Commerce and the Bowden Building. The group is also behind the Pensacola Film Festival and the classic movies series at the Rex Theatre.

Pensacola Cinema Art is a small operation – just Norton and a handful of volunteers – but the project has gained traction in the last year. Soon, Norton will have a permanent home for Pensacola Cinema Art in the newly renovated Studer Community Institute building on Garden Street. With a dedicated screening room and ample parking, Norton believes the group can achieve a regular schedule showing one film per week.

“To be successful we need to draw people from Pensacola Beach, Gulf Breeze, Navarre,” Norton said. “Now they know we’ll be in one venue and they know they can come downtown and they can park. Our goal is to show first run art films yearround on a weekly basis. We’ve been operating 3 to 4 years but we haven’t been able to do that yet but with this new space I think we should be able to.”

The movie-going experience at Pensacola Cinema Art is stripped down to the very basics. There’s no popcorn, no fancy projection systems and no online reservations. The audience at an average screening is about 25 people. Tickets are just $5 at the door.

The whole operation is possible because of Norton’s connections in the film industry. He works with small film companies to get custom releases of films that otherwise wouldn’t see distribution in Pensacola. The ticket sales basically cover the cost of getting the films.

“None of us get paid but it’s fun and it’s starting to grow a little bit,” Norton said.

Norton said he was inspired to start Pensacola Cinema Art because he saw that the city had developed a rich cultural scene, but still lacked art cinema.

DRIVE-BY TRUCKERS AN INTERVIEW WITH PATTERSON HOOD

Thanks for agreeing to do this. You guys will be playing here on Jan. 24. I understand you’ve been here a number of times.

Yeah, and I was just there. I just played a solo show at (Pensacola State College) like two weeks ago.

Really? I had no idea.

Yeah, it was really fun. It really went well.

Well I know I’ve seen Drive By Truckers at Vinyl a number of times. Do y’all primarily tour through the South?

No, we tour all over. We tour all over America and Canada and Europe and even Australia.

So what keeps you coming to Pensacola then?

It’s been a little while since we’ve been there but it’s good to come back. (Playing

at PSC) was actually the first time I’d ever played solo down there except for maybe long ago at Sluggo’s. In the early days of the band, we used to all play Sluggo’s kind of regularly.

We’re actually kind of doing a Florida tour on this next leg. It’s been a little over two years since we’ve done that, and I think we kind of missed out on Pensacola last time so it’ll be good to come back through there. I like Vinyl. I haven’t been since they added on to it, but I hear it’s really good.

Yeah, it’s a good upgrade they did. Well, the first thing I wanted to start with was just a general question and that’s–you’ve been at this with Drive By Truckers for over 20 years–what keeps you going and how do you keep making new material and touring and doing all the stuff you guys do?

I’d say, honestly, it’s the new material that keeps us going. I never really want to be an oldies act and, honestly, not really ever

having had a hit, it’s kind of kept us from having a song you have to churn out every night. We’re still ambitiously chasing making our best record and writing our best song. That might even sound like a cliché but it’s really the truth. We just made a record the other day and we’re super excited about how that turned out and moving forward, so that’s really what motivates us, it’s just the pursuit of something new and different we’re excited about.

That was one thing I was going to ask you. It’s been over two years since the last Drive By Truckers album and I was going to ask if you’re working on new material.

It’s been a blessing that the last record was received well enough that we’ve been able to tour behind it for so long.

We honestly didn’t expect that to be the case. It was such a topical record of its moment when it came out that I didn’t really know that it would be something that would still have legs two years later,

whereas actually I think it has become more (topical) in the years since it came out than when it came out, so that’s kind of one of those weird turns of fate that you don’t always expect.

And that was, like you eluded to, a pretty political album for you guys, and things have only gotten hairier in the political landscape and more divisive. So do you feel like people kind of latched on to that album for that reason?

I think so. You never know how things are going to be received when you make it. We were kind of prepared for it to be badly received. We really didn’t expect it to be as well received as it became. I’m glad it was, though I would trade a lot of that for the times being a little better. Its been a wild ride. We’ve essentially toured for 25 months straight behind that record and that’s the longest we’ve ever toured behind one record.

What’s that like? Being on the road, do you get to go home at all?

We try to keep it at three week intervals and go home between them. Sometimes for longer sometimes for shorter, it just depends what all is going on. You know, we’ve all got kids. Everybody in the band is pretty good about being a conscientious and good parent. None of us want to miss our children’s childhood, so we try to strike a balance sometimes with better results than others. Sometimes were good at it sometimes were not good at it, but we’re always striving to get towards that because that is the most important thing.

Well we were talking about the last album and how you’ve not released anything new (by the Drive By Truckers) in a few years, but I read that you found some old recordings, I guess from you’re first band?

Yeah, Adam’s House Cat. We put the Adam’s House Cat record out in September.

That’s an album that we made in 1990 and it never came out.

I was reading about how that came about, and what I read was that the boxes of those recordings just showed up one day. How does that happen?

It’s a mystery. We really don’t know. I’ve got a theory about it, but I’ve never been

able to confirm how it happened. That’s one of those strange stories. There’s a lot of strange stories associated with that record. The good news is that record, I think, is really good and it’s really held up. I think a lot of people when they finally heard it after all these years of it never coming out – when it came out it got really good reviews. I think people were pleasantly surprised at how good it was and how well it held up. I think people were expecting it to be some kind of half-assed version of what we became, but it’s really its own thing. We were a pretty fully-formed band back then. In some ways you can certainly see how it led to what we do now, but in some ways there were things we did then that we don’t really do now, so its kind of its own thing. It’s a little bit of a product of its time, you know, we were certainly influenced by bands of that time like REM and The Replacements and you can absolutely hear their influence, but there’s also things about it that’s like wow, you can hear how that become what the Truckers did, so that’s kind of interesting How old were you when you made that album?

I was 26. I was 27 when the band broke up. The band broke up as we were trying to put the record out, and we weren’t able to. We couldn’t find anybody to help us release it and we were trying to raise the money ourselves and it just got to be too much. We were trying to relocate the band and in the process of moving and all that we ended up basically breaking the band up. Then the drummer moved away and he was kind of the heart and soul of that band and there was no band without him.

But (Mike) Cooley and I continued playing together and we had two other bands and then we broke up for little period of time then we got back together we started the Drive By Truckers in 1996 and had a kind of amazing run.

But we reconnected with that drummer – who’s older than us – and he’s living in Cleveland, Ohio and just as we reconnected with him he had a massive heart attack and fortunately lived through it and is OK. We had relocated the tapes by that time and after he had his heart attack I made it my New Year’s resolution that

we would put out that record out so that Chuck was alive and well to see it happen, so we did and its been amazing having it out.

Drive By Truckers latest album, American Band, is also their most political. The band will play at Vinyl Music Hall on Jan. 24.

Wow, that’s really cool. Going back to your work with the Truckers, you’ve got 11 albums, which is crazy. I wonder if you have any that stick out as your own favorites?

I will always have an extra fondness for Decoration Day. I knew when we were writing that record that that one was special it was a leap form anything we had done. It was our follow up to Southern Rock Opera which was the record that kind of put us on the map as far as other people knowing about us. You know a lot of people romanticize that record and I’m happy that people like it and I like it too, but to me Decoration Day was a far greater record. We were really hitting on all cylinders right at that moment of time when we made it.

You know, I really like American Band. I’m really proud of what we’re doing right now as far as the next one, but if I had to pull out an older one to pinpoint, I definitely feel like we got (Decoration Day) right. If I hear it playing, there’s nothing that makes me cringe or think I wish I could do that over again.

Speaking of American Band we kind of talked already about how that was a record of the times. And I read your New York Times op-ed (about the Confederate Flag) and I wonder if some of your fans in the South have kind of given you some backlash over some of the positions you’ve taken?

We certainly got some backlash when the record came out and I’m under the assumption that it ran some fans off and some people left, but you know it also brought some new people in too.

When I’m writing a record I’m not thinking about any of that. I’m thinking of writing the song I hear in my head and being true to what I hear in my head. Once I’ve written it, I’m thinking of turning those songs into the best record we can make and being true to the songs and being to the band and to ourselves and making the best record we can make. That’s been our way of operating since day one and will be as long as there’s a band. When we were making Southern Rock Opera I can’t count the number of people – because the band was just getting a little bit of traction and people were thinking of us as like this Americana or alt-Country thing and they would hear what we were doing with Southern Rock Opera and they would be like, ‘You’re going to run off your fans.

You’ve finally got some fans and you’re going to run them off.’ But we stuck with it and made the record we wanted to make it and put it out, and it ended up being a really successful record for us. So that’s kind of always been the way we’ve done things. So I trust my art instinct and try to be true to that and I figure everything else will work it self out the way its got to.

Well again Patterson, thanks for doing this. I’ve just got one more question. We talked about your touring and how you just did two years on the road. I wonder do you have a favorite place or maybe a state to play in?

Oh man, I’m all over. I love playing the big cities and I love going in to the towns that don’t get all the big acts. I always loved playing New York, but at the same time I’m conscious of the fact that everybody plays New York. So it’s also kind of cool to go to Tulsa or Pensacola.

Visit Wall South

If you’ve spent any time in Pensacola, you’ve driven past Veterans Memorial Park and Wall South, but have you ever seen the somber monuments up close? The park is home to monuments to those who fought in the American Revolution, the Korean War, both World Wars and the War on Terror. It’s center piece, Wall South, is a half-size replica of the famous Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. The Veteran’s Memorial Park Foundation has spent years improving the park to its current state, both solemn and beautiful. It’s well worth the visit.

With each New Year, downtown Pensacola adds more and more to see and do. 2018 saw a slew of new shops and restaurants, the opening of the Southtowne apartments and the kickoff of the Pensacola Bay Ferry Service (which we really hope survives in 2019). With all the newness, it’s easy to overlook some of the things and places that have made downtown great for years. So here, for your consideration, is a list of the best things to do downtown if you haven’t already. Put one of these on your list for the New Year.

Ice Skating at the Bay Center

Winter sports are not exactly booming in the City of Five Flags, but there is at least one opportunity to feel like winter is a real thing. The Bay Center offers public ice skating throughout the Ice Flyers season from October to March.

Public skate sessions last an hour and cost $12 per person with skate rental included. Check PensacolaBayCenter.com for a full schedule.

Palafox Market

Arguably the best way to spend a Saturday morning in the city, Palafox Market has grown over the years to be a hugely popular. From homemade treats to fresh produce to arts and crafts, there’s a little bit of everything at the market. Whether you decide to buy something or not, strolling through the market with a hot cup of coffee from your favorite downtown shop is a great way to spend an hour. The market is open every Saturday from 9 am to 2 pm rain or shine.

Catch a show at Vinyl

Vinyl Music Hall has been in downtown Pensacola for a decade, but there’s never been a better time than now to catch a show if you’ve never been. Vinyl completed a top-to-bottom renovation in 2018 and has never sounded better. With increased capacity thanks to a new mezzanine, we’re expecting big things from Vinyl in 2019. If you’ve never been, keep an eye on their schedule at VinylMusicHall.com.

Visit the T.T. Wentworth Museum

You’ve no doubt seen the massive T.T. Wentworth Museum bordering Plaza Ferdinand in downtown Pensacola, but have you ever stopped in? The museum is a treasure trove Pensacola’s past with exhibits detailing the city’s founding and rich past. Never got to visit Trader Jon’s while it was still open? The nation’s largest prediction run is hosted right here in downtown Pensacola every year, starting and finishing at McGuire’s Irish Pub. Never done a prediction run, or have no idea what that is? It’s simple. Before the race, you predict what time you will finish, and you want to get as close to that time as possible. It’s not about who is the fastest runner, it’s about whether you know just how fast, or slow, you’ll make it to the finish line. Since it’s not a real race, there’s no pressure to finish first, making it one of the easiest races throughout Pensacola. This is one you don’t want to miss out, especially since the post-race party will be hosted at the famous pub with all the whiskey you need to celebrate. The run is currently scheduled for March 9 from 9 am – noon.

Games are currently hosted at the Blue Wahoos Stadium overlooking the beautiful Pensacola Bay, but with a stadium at the college under construction, now’s the time to take advantage of the view. After their worst year in the 2018 season, the Argonauts are getting ready to take the field by storm, and you’ll want to be witness to their redemptive season in 2019. The Argos’ 2019 football season will start in August.

If you’re like most people, you probably could stand to lose a few pounds. We’re not suggesting anything, of course. It’s just that, statistically speaking, the two most popular New Year’s resolutions are to eat healthier and get in shape. Fortunately, downtown Pensacola has, over the course of the last decade or so, become a great place to get a good workout. Whether you’re a runner, a lifter, a yogi or a professional couch potato, there’s something downtown to get you moving. Imagine my surprise when all the songs I had been shamelessly belting out in my car were remade with new artists.

Dreamed about a Panic! at the Disco version of “The Greatest Showman,” or what “Never Enough” sung by Kelly Clarkson would sound like? This album has you covered! Each song carries the same fun and joy as the original album, but with new spins from some amazing artists. A Zac Brown Band version of “From Now On?” Yes, please!

BY WILL ISERN I missed this album when it first came out in May, but it’s been on heavy rotation since I found it highly placed on many of the year’s best-of lists. DJ Koze, aka Stefan Kozalla, has always made surprisingly emotional dance music and this latest effort is perhaps his masterpiece. With influences from French house, soul, hip-hop and even dream pop, Kozalla weaves together samples and live instruments to create beautifully detailed tracks full of the warmth and emotion often lost in electronic music. He is truly a master of his craft.

BY WILL ISERN Some albums are so far ahead of their time when they are released that it takes decades for them to become appreciated for what they are. Such is the case with the newly re-released Hex by the long-disbanded British group Bark Psychosis. First released in 1994, Hex has since come to be recognized as landmark statement at the dawn of postrock, on par with the like of Talk Talk’s Laughing Stock. I’m a sucker for postrock so this record was always going to come with a strong recommendation, but I can confidently say that Hex is both the best music I discovered in 2018, as well as my favorite.

BY WILL ISERN Nearly 30 years after literally inventing house music in Chicago, Larry Heard is back to prove he’s still got it. The jazz and R&B influences are heavy here, but make no mistake this is house music as only Mr. Fingers could do it. The album is a bit of a slog to get through and some tracks are too concerned with paying homage to particular flavors of house music, but the highlights are as good as any house music released since Heard invented the genre. If there was ever any question, Mr. Fingers has still got it.

Run along a fast and flat race route along the beachfront shoreline of the Gulf of Mexico in the Florida panhandle area at the Pensacola Beach Half Marathon, 10K and 5K Jan. 12 starting at 8 a.m..
