5 Questions with Creatives

Artist Kenneth Jordan II, aka Crayola Sensei

A Crayola Sensei is sharing his art and knowledge with others: Kenneth Jordan Il is an artist and art educator from Pensacola who creates beautiful artwork with Crayola crayons, pushing his wax medium within the realm of contemporary realism. His work explores themes related to spirituality, personal narrative, the human figure and family. His current body of work navigates the space of personal relationships and the impact they have on perception in life.

After earning his Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2015 from the University of West Florida (UWF), Jordan went on to maintain a studio practice in Pensacola, where he is currently accepting commissions through August while gearing up for two summer workshops with the Pensacola Museum of Art (PMA) and Luna Fine Arts/ Hive Arts Academy. This fall, he will also debut From the Land, a new series of small drawings that includes two works currently on display at the PMA. Jordan’s drawings have been featured in numerous exhibitions and auctions across the Gulf Coast, including the O What a Gala in New Orleans; Taking a Line for a Walk: 100 Years of Drawing and Printmaking at the PMA; Yr.8, a solo exhibition at Artel Gallery and Table 7, a group exhibition at the TAG gallery at UWF. Follow his journey and discover more of his artwork on Instagram @crayolasensei.

How did you get started as an artist?

Originally, I wanted to take a sculpture class and sculpt like Michelangelo. When neither PJC nor UWF offered that kind of classical course, I pivoted to digital art. That degree required a few studio prerequisites, including a painting class at UWF. Because the Painting 1 class was full, I was thrown into Advanced Painting with the promise that I’d still be taught the basics. My instructor, Marzia Ransom, sat me right next to Josh Green — who is now a world-renowned painter and educator. By the end of the semester, Marzia had changed my major to Studio Arts. I trusted her judgment and here I am.

Why choose to make artwork using crayons?

If I am unique, I want my life to represent that. My mother would say, 'God has already given you everything you need to succeed in life, now make the best of it.’ There is a certain magic in the way a child believes: you hear a truth directly and act on it with total honesty. With crayons, I explore what is possible in art. My message isn't just in the finished piece, but in the layers of the process. I never found blueprints in dreams or success

@crayolasensei

in following others' dreams. I realized that for things to change, I had to embody a space that had no prior examples. Today, I use crayons to appreciate life’s lessons and to serve as an example of new possibilities.

What is the “best” and “worst” thing about using crayons as your primary medium?

The magic of my medium is by far the layering. Because crayons are complex blends of wax and pigment, no two colors behave the same. They are temperaturesensitive: some apply with heavy opacity while others remain transparent, mixing and solidifying unequally as they cool. This inconsistency is maddening, yet it is my greatest tool. By defying expectations, the medium forces me into a state of pure exploration where I must rely entirely on my intuition as an artist. It is a volatile process, but the reward is worth the struggle.

Who or what has influenced you the most?

Gregory B. Saunders was my mentor and remains one of my greatest influences in terms of developing as an artist. Stylistically, I would look to Rembrandt’s incredibly emotional, textured and dramatic painting style. The relationships I have built and lost serve as my primary subject matter. More than a career, my art is a lived discipline that reflects challenges and core values.

What message would you like to give to our readers?

I ask readers to challenge their own nostalgia. Sometimes, simply changing how we look at things can alter our entire trajectory. Almost everyone has held a crayon, making the medium instantly relatable. But mastering the simplest tool requires the exact same faith, commitment and consistency it takes to navigate life. My goal isn't just to make art — it’s to inspire you to question what is possible and push something in your own everyday life beyond expectations. If that resonates with you, I invite you to come experience the work in person.

del shores foundation writers festival

Uplifting Southern LGBTQ+ Artists

although writing can be a solitary endeavor, one organization is proving that we don’t have to go it alone: The Del Shores Foundation (DSF) Writers Festival brings together likeminded Southern LGBTQ+ artists to focus on practical writing applications while also celebrating writers and bringing a sense of undeniable community.

As an LGBTQ+-centered organization, the programs, leadership and artist selection processes are intentionally designed to uplift historically

marginalized voices across the South and expand access to creative opportunity.

This year, presented by The Red Ribbon Charitable Foundation in partnership with Stamped Film Festival, the fourth annual DSF Writers Festival is coming to Pensacola Little Theatre May 8-10, and admission is free.

“Our goal has always been to give great writers real and practical steps to moving their work toward production,” DSF Executive Director Emerson Collins said. “The Writers Festival is a celebration of work with readings of winning scripts featuring local actors and panels with professionals for real world advice and direction, and an opportunity to create and enjoy community with each other.”

The DSF Writers Festival is unique because it’s halfway between a writer’s convention and film festival with the best elements of both. In addition to highlighting the winning scripts, the festival combines panels, workshops and readings for a distinctive mix unlike any other festival in the South.

The festival will kick off May 8 with four daytime panels: Bringing Your Story to Life, Making It Happen Yourself, Writing For Television and From Page to Production.

Special guests and panelists include: playwrights Del Shores, Leslie Kimbell and Matthew Scott Montgomery along with screenwriters Marisa Calin, Ariel Mahler, William Mettlach, Peter Paide and Brianca Williams. There will be breaks between each panel and a one hour lunch break.

The panels are designed with actionable information, focusing on the many ways to wear more hats and produce your own work from fundraising to self-producing. Detailed insight is provided on working with producers, writing with and for other people and what adjustments happen when scripts meet the real world of TV, film and theatre production. All panels are open to the public, but registration is required.

Opening night will include a two-part evening centered around a stage

reading of the DSF Writers Search Short Film Award winner Do You Take This…? by Eric Gustafson.

This reading will be followed by a special screening of Smoke Breaks, the completed film written and directed by Pensacola-based 2023 short winner, William Mettlach.

Saturday will feature a stage reading of Animals ~or~ We Just Want Love… by Jameson L. Black, and the Sunday matinee will close with a reading of The Invalid by Robbie Robertson.

To support the growth and success of winners, DSF provides grants to each winner to help them move toward production including: $100 to semifinalists, $250 to finalists, $1,000 to Best Short and $3,000 to Best Play and Best Screenplay. Grants are also given to production budgets for the winning scripts as well. In 2026, $2,000 was given to the Best Short and $10,000 each to the Best Play and Best Screenplay.

To help further ensure the winners meet with success in the industry, the winning play script is sent to all 50 of DSF Writers Festival’s theatre partners to consider producing the world premiere and every year they have been successful in getting the winner their own world premiere. The winning screenplay writer gets to meet with production companies to pitch their script, and DSF has secured meetings with Universal, A24, Shondaland, Ryan Murphy, Greg Berlanti, NBC and more.

DSF Writers Festival works every year to ensure they are reaching unproduced LGBTQ+ writers who live in the South through writing groups, their submission platform FilmFreeway plus through universities, screenplay writer groups and more. Readers pass the scripts through several rounds of advancement. A final group of potential winners are read by jurors who are professionals in film, TV and theatre with a wide range of experience, success and

backgrounds to represent different levels of the industry.

These jurors select the winners by panel and work hard to ensure that as many people from as many communities as possible under the LGBTQ+ umbrella are represented. This year, DSF Writers Festival has six nonbinary/trans writers in their 15 finalists.

The only requirements for submissions are: identify as LGBTQ+, be a resident of the South, and be unproduced in the category you submit under. There have been finalists ranging from ages 23 to 72 and submissions from all 15 Southern states.

Every year, the festival is moved to a different Southern city to engage with a different arts community. The festival premiered in Dallas, the next year moved to Atlanta, last year it took place in Birmingham, Ala. and this year it will be held in Pensacola.

“Because we move the festival each year, each festival is an entirely unique adventure,” Collins said. “We have different arts partners every time, and each year the scripts are new so the actors we are seeking change every time. We also work to bring a different set of LGBTQ+ professional voices for the panels every year as well.”

Last year, DSF Writers Festival engaged with a wide range of

theatre companies in Birmingham, Ala. The range of the winning scripts meant spending nearly three months casting the readings. The winning screenplay was the story of a 15-year-old Bahamian boy that required five high school age actors, and a local high school drama teacher helped in enlisting all the actors.

Del Shores and Emerson Collins are excited to bring DSF Writers Festival to Pensacola, already familiar with our city after attending the Stamped Film Festival in 2022, where they were artist guests as filmmakers. Shores has written, directed and produced successfully across studio and independent film, network and cable television, and regional and national touring theatre. His career took off with the 1987 play, Daddy’s Dyin’ (Who’s Got the Will?) Collins is an actor, producer and TV personality who starred in four seasons of Bravo’s hit social series, The People’s Couch, and he appeared as Steve in RENT on Fox.

It was at the 10th Stamped Film Festival that Shores and Collins met William Mettlach during a Q&A session. Mettlach asked a series of questions, and afterward Collins encouraged Mettlach to write a short and submit it. When Mettlach won the 2023 Best Short, Calliope Films, a Pensacola production company, produced it with him. The short,

Smoke Breaks, screened the next year at Stamped and will be returning to the stage for this year’s DSF Writer’s Festival.

“We’ve received such incredible support for us as artists and our work,” Collins said. “It is our great pleasure to return to Pensacola to give back to the LGBTQ+ and arts communities here!”

Although the festival and panels are open to the public, registration is required. Find out more details and register online at delshoresfoundation.org.

Sips of Summer Signature Drinks of Pensacola

On the Gulf Coast, a cocktail is more than just a drink — it’s part of the experience, shaped by bold flavors, coastal ingredients and a laid-back vibe made for sunny days and warm nights. Whether you’re cooling off after a long day in the sun or heading out for an evening downtown, these signature cocktails capture the taste of summer in Pensacola, one sip at a time. From frozen classics to refreshing spritzes and creative craft pours, each one brings its own twist to the table — perfect for slow sunsets, lively nights and everything in between.

The Bushwhacker

Widely known as the signature drink of Pensacola Beach, the Bushwhacker is a frozen favorite that blurs the line between cocktail and dessert in the best possible way. Blending rum, coffee liqueur, crème de cacao and coconut cream, it’s a rich, velvety indulgence — think piña colada meets chocolate milkshake with a subtle caffeinated kick. Creamy, boozy and effortlessly drinkable, it’s the kind of treat that turns a hot beach day into something worth lingering over. You’ll find versions of it at nearly every beach bar, but the original experience comes from the place that started it all. First introduced in the mid-1970s at the Sandshaker Lounge, often referred to as the “Home of the Original Bushwhacker,” this iconic drink has become a rite of passage for anyone spending the summer on Pensacola Beach.

Fish House Punch

Few cocktails carry the sun-soaked spirit of the Gulf Coast quite like Fish House Punch — a storied, rumforward classic that feels tailor-made for long, humid afternoons in Pensacola. A longtime favorite along the waterfront, Fish House Punch is a bright, citrus-forward cocktail that delivers both refreshment and a deceptively strong kick. Traditionally associated with the historic fishing camps and social clubs of the region, Fish House Punch blends rum, brandy, fresh lemon juice and a touch of sweetness. This crisp, chilled drink is as smooth as it is spirited. Light, zesty and perfect for a hot summer day, it’s a go-to sip for those looking to enjoy a classic with a coastal edge. You can snag one for $10 at the Fish House restaurant and outdoor Deck Bar in downtown Pensacola.

Diesel Fuel

The Diesel Fuel at Flounder's on Pensacola Beach has gained quite the reputation since the restaurant opened back in 1980. Served in an over-sized, souvenir mason jar and garnished with all the goods, this high-octane cocktail packs some serious punch. It is basically a double Long Island Ice Tea with a bit of an island twist. Made with double shots of gin, rum, vodka and triple sec, the Diesel Fuel makes for a refreshing summer treat. It’s also available in other tasty flavors, including melon and tropical, which are two of our personal favorites. If you’re looking to cool off and unwind after a long day on the beach this summer, Flounder’s Diesel Fuel delivers the perfect combination of refreshment and kick.

Dô Asian Cocktails

A vodka cocktail with no mixers or weird stuff? Yes please! Unwind this summer with a new, fresh flavor and cheers with Dô (pronounced Yo!). Every cocktail is made with premium 5x distilled vodka, zero artificial anything and conveniently comes in a can so you can take it with you on your summer adventures. The name is both an homage to the founder’s Vietnamese roots (as Dô means cheers in Vietnamese) and a nod to the drink’s Asian flavors. Dô uses real ingredients in its four flagship flavors: pineapple, mandarin, yuzu lemon and passionfruit – all with 5.5% ABV per can. While there’s no reason not to try all four options, if you’re looking for a flavor to start with we’d recommend yuzu lemon – a current crowd favorite. Dô is made by a small, owner-operated team crafting every batch locally at Big Jerk Soda Co., so what you’re sipping didn’t come from a giant factory – it came from people who care about quality and community. You can find Dô at many downtown Pensacola hangouts from Betty’s and NYN Badlands to Hub Stacey’s, Sabai, Ever’man and more.

The Yard

Both rooted in tradition and uniquely local, The Yard — the newest amber lager by Perfect Plain Brewing Company — pays a crisp tribute to collaboration, craftsmanship and the city’s deep maritime roots. Created in partnership with the U.S. Navy, this unique brew features rich hazelnut and toasted-bread maltiness, complemented by soft floral aromatics, creating a balanced and flavorful drinking experience. With an ABV of 4.5% and 12 IBUs (International Bitterness Units), The Yard is smooth and well-balanced, making it easy to enjoy more than one without it feeling too heavy or overwhelming. Approachable, yet thoughtfully crafted, it's a beer that manages to feel both celebratory and down-toearth. The Yard is available on draught and in six-pack 12 oz cans at the Perfect Plain taproom in downtown Pensacola.

Palafox Spritz

Spiked Key Lime Pie

Nothing says Florida flavor and serves as a refreshing retreat from the summer heat like a slice of key lime pie. What’s even better? A yummy (and optionally boozy) ice cream treat that captures the flavor of key lime pie tastefully. Looking for something with crisp, cool flavor? The Palafox Spritz delivers as a bright, herbaceous craft cocktail with a tropical twist, layering crisp gin with fragrant lemongrass and fresh Thai basil, balanced by the sweetness of ripe strawberries and lemon. Topped with sparkling wine, it’s light and refreshingly complex — perfect for cooling down during a warm summer night or day. You can feel especially good about indulging in a glass or two because you’ll be supporting a local restaurant during the Reimagine Palafox construction. Although we think this drink is a perfect cocktail for summer, the Asian-inspired Palafox Spritz is available year-round for $13. THE BLUE ANGELS ANNOUNCE COMMANDING OFFICER FOR 2027-2028 SHOW SEASONS

The U.S. Navy Flight Demonstration Squadron, the Blue Angels, announced the commanding officer for the 2027 and 2028 seasons at a press conference at the National Naval Aviation Museum onboard Naval Air Station Pensacola on April 14.

Cmdr. Logan R. Peck will succeed Capt. Adam Bryan and assume command following the end of the 2026 show season in November. Applicants are required to have a minimum number of flight hours and be in current command, or have had past command, of a tactical jet squadron.

“It’s an incredible honor to take on this role and represent the men and women of this team,” Cmdr. Peck said. “Every day, I’m focused on leading in a way that reflects that responsibility, and making sure we continue to perform at the highest level.”

Peck, a native of San Diego, California joins the Blue Angels after serving as the commanding officer of the Fighting Checkmates of VFA-211. His previous assignments include multiple squadron tours, where he deployed aboard USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) in support of Operation Freedom’s Sentinel.

Peck holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Kansas and Baker University. He also has more than 2,400 flight hours, and more than 500 carrier arrested landings. His decorations include multiple unit and personal awards.

“This year’s selection process reflected the high level of talent and professionalism within our ranks,” Blue Angels Commanding Officer and Flight Leader Capt. Adam Bryan said. “Cmdr. Peck embodies those qualities, and I am confident he will lead the team with pride and professionalism in the seasons ahead.”

Peck will serve as Commanding Officer and Flight Leader for the 2027 and 2028 Blue Angels airshow seasons. He will report for initial training in Pensacola, Florida in September and officially take command of the squadron at the end of the air show season in November. The changeof-command ceremony is slated for November 8, 2026 at the National Naval Aviation Museum.

As the Blue Angels' commanding officer, Peck will lead a squadron of 140 personnel and serve as the demonstration flight leader, flying the #1 jet. The Blue Angels perform for 11 million people annually across the United States, and are scheduled to perform 64 shows in 32 locations during the 2027 season.
