Artist Jacqueline McMillan

Jacqueline McMillan is a local artist who challenges traditional floristry with her remarkably crafted wooden flowers. As a quadruple amputee, McMillan found the resilience and creativity to transform pieces of wood into lifelike flower arrangements from stunning succulents to bountiful bouquets that will never wilt. In 2018, she gained recognition after attending her first Jubilee Festival of Arts in Daphne, Ala., where she received her first bridal order for flowers and the bride was later featured on The Ellen Show, shining spotlight on McMillan’s wooden florals. When McMillan is not building up her inventory to feature at Palafox Market in downtown Pensacola, she’s fulfilling custom bridal orders and growing her presence at art shows from Alabama and Georgia to Mississippi.

I am always looking to create as many different flowers as I can while sharing my art with as many people as I can reach. I’ve created bouquets and arrangements for cancer patients, and forever wall art. I’m still trying to perfect very curly-edged flowers like irises, as it’s hard to create the wave patterns without tension points.

By Morgan Cole Adventure is coming to town, bringing a fresh wave of inspiration to Pensacola. Returning for its sixth season, Mountainfilm on Tour will bring a curated selection of thoughtprovoking documentary films to Pensacola Little Theatre on January 17.

Exploring themes aligned with Mountainfilm’s mission of using the power of film, art and ideas to inspire audiences to create a better world, Mountainfilm on Tour showcases a selection of short films that share powerful stories of resilience, hope and transformation— spotlighting individuals and communities who rise above adversity with courage and creativity.

While the main festival was originally only held in Telluride, Mountainfilm began touring in 1999 to share its films with larger audiences in communities across the globe. “ The Pensacola tour showcases a collection of culturally rich, adventure-packed and incredibly inspiring documentary films from the annual Mountainfilm Festival in Telluride,” Mountainfilm on Tour – Pensacola Co-Director Jacey Cosentino said.

After experiencing the awe and beauty of the Mountainfilm Festival firsthand during a family trip to Telluride, Cosentino immediately knew it was something that needed to come to Pensacola. “We handpicked 12 to 13 short films from the main festival in Telluride to showcase for the Pensacola event that would not only resonate with, but also inspire the local community,” Cosentino said. “The films explore a variety of themes and topics, showcasing inspirational stories that focus on community, diversity and the connection between people and wild places.”

The Pensacola tour will kick off with a special screening of a short documentary film produced by local florist and owner of Fiore of Pensacola, Shannon Pallin. The film is called Follow The Flower, and it explores the life cycle of Alaskan peonies, highlighting the growers’ dedication and capturing how a single bloom has the ability to connect people from the farthest reaches of the earth.

The Pensacola tour kicks off January 17 at the Pensacola Little at 400 S. Jefferson St. in downtown Pensacola. The doors open at 5 pm, with film screenings beginning at 6 pm. he calendar isn’t lying: It’s 2026 already. The time for making new year’s resolutions is well upon us, and there’s always room to add a few goals that focus on improving body and mind to the list. What better way to boost mental and physical health than to go back to the basics of good exercise and camaraderie by playing fun sports and being social?

Our area’s adult sports scene offers everything from pickleball and tennis to cornhole and disc golf, where you’re guaranteed to find a group of likeminded people with whom to enjoy a great game. Whether you’ve got a competitive edge geared for leagues or you're just looking for casual one-off games, get in the sporty spirit by joining any of the groups listed below and jump start the new year with the upbeat energy and convivial vibes to carry you through to the end of 2026. From kickball and cornhole to bowling, here are some organized adult sports groups across Gulf Breeze and Pensacola that offer plenty of ways to get in the game.

Get Fired Up with Kaboom!

Sports, bar crawls and festive events? Say less! Joining a Kaboom league means more than just playing sports: There’s a unique sense of community and friendship built between fellow players on and off the field. When Kaboom isn’t running co-ed leagues ranging from experienced players to beginners in kickball, volleyball, cornhole and bowling, members 21+ are gathering for jovial Thanksgiving, Christmas and even Mardi Gras themed bar crawls in downtown Pensacola, taking participants through favorite watering holes like Intermission, O’Riley’s Irish Pub and Odd Colony Brewing Co. Outside of games there’s more than just bar crawls, as Kaboom stages lively events at games with music and raffles for free leagues. Kickball games often take place at Lion’s Park in downtown Pensacola, while cornhole games have been hosted at venues like Coastal County Brewing and Wild Gregg’s Saloon. Prices vary according to what league you’re entering, like cornhole or kickball, and whether you register as an individual or team. Kaboom’s leagues run seasonally for eight weeks at a time. For those who may not want to commit to a full two

Tighten Up Your Game with City of Gulf Breeze From tennis and basketball to horseshoes and disc golf, City of Gulf Breeze’s facilities at Shoreline Park provide the chance for casual players and sports enthusiasts alike to sharpen their skills or enjoy friendly competition. You can serve up a good game of tennis with a group of friends on a pristine court Monday through Friday, just be sure to call ahead to reserve the space with a fee of only $2 per hour for residents of Gulf Breeze. Or, join a pick up game of men’s basketball on Mondays, Wednesdays and Friday from 6 to 8 am. Basketball games are played at the Gulf Breeze Community Center using the honors system and players rotate through to take turns, just be sure to bring your own ball. Available seven days a week from sunrise to sunset, the horseshoe league gathers for a classic lawn game experience where two players toss horseshoes (now more modern, stylized U-shaped bars) at metal stakes set 40 feet apart.

This simple yet skillful sport is perfect for those looking for a little leisurely outdoor competition in a relaxed setting. Also open daily from dawn until dusk is the 18-hole disc golf course at Shoreline North with holes 11-18 designed for quicker rounds or newer players by minimizing challenging water hazards and dense tree coverage. However, if you take on the full course then you'll find some unique opportunities to shoot for island targets only accessible by bridge—combining fun, challenge and our area's natural beauty. Ham it Up with All-In-Sports Give a warm welcome to Pensacola’s newest sport and social group: Allin-Sports Club. Although they have the traditional favorite of kickball, what sets this club apart is the inclusion of ultimate frisbee and sprinting, both of which have leagues coming in the spring of 2026. For kickball, there’s a social division for laid-back games or a competitive division for those wanting to chase the winning title. Individuals (also called free agents) and already formed teams are welcome to join leagues. Leagues run a ten-week season with a championship finale as well as a bonus draft league tournament, and most games are set up at NEP Park on E. 9 Mile Rd. Kickball league registration runs about $67.15 per person. For those who prefer a more fastpaced, high-energy team sport that blends the best of soccer and football there’s ultimate frisbee. Whether you're diving for catches or making epic passes, ultimate frisbee is guaranteed to offer friendly competition and a whole lot of laughs. If running is more your speed, the sprint club focuses on weekly training sessions designed to boost power and technique with a season ending in a lively, rapid race series to show off your progress. From tournaments and prize giveaways to raffles and pub crawls, the club aims to foster recreational team building in and out of the game. Rally Up with City of Pensacola Want a more structured game than backyard kickball? The City of Pensacola creates a welcoming environment where teams can connect through play and enjoy highquality sport experiences. Whether you’re a seasoned athlete or a newcomer, there’s pick-up games in volleyball and pickleball along with leagues in kickball and softball running from September to August every year. You must come to a league with a team of eight to 16 players already lined up. The only leagues run by the City right now are softball and kickball priced at $275 per team for an eight-week season. All games are played at Exchange Park in downtown Pensacola, where there’s plenty of shade to keep players cool during the warmer months (and we know Florida has many of those). If you’d rather jump in when the mood strikes, there’s openings for one-off games in volleyball and pickleball at Vickrey Resource Center. Open gym volleyball runs Mondays and Wednesdays from 6:15 to 8:15 pm for $2 per person each night.

A growing number of Pensacola makers are embracing the idea of mobile businesses and proving that some of the city’s most exciting shops don’t need a permanent address—just a packed calendar and a loyal following. Blending craftsmanship, storytelling and community connection, these mobile business models offer a more personal alternative to traditional storefronts that’s reshaping the way we think about retail.

Owned and operated by Kim Marie Casson, the mobile flower business offers fresh blooms and a create-your-own bouquet experience. Operating from a chic vintage truck, Moon Drop brings a unique hands-on floral experience to markets and neighborhood gathering spots across the community.

On Sunday mornings, Moon Drop can often be found set up outside the Ruby Slipper on Palafox.

Perfect Day Books Established to foster inclusiveness and community connection, this indie bookstore on wheels offers a friendly, accessible and adventurous way to discover new books, delivering the bookstore experience right to you.

Perfect Day’s pop-up bookstore can be spotted in various locations throughout the Pensacola area—from parks to local small businesses—promoting screen-free time and bringing a pop-up library experience to local events, including parks and small businesses.

Launched by Hannah Burns in July 2025, the mobile bookstore operates out of a renovated truck and has been popping up around the city since late July 2025. Perfect Day’s nomadic book truck offers a curated selection of new and used books, comics, stationery and other unique literary-themed experiences.

Perfect Day Books offers more than just a selection of titles. Visitors can expect a carefully curated mix of items like upcycled clothing, metaphysical items, stationery, tarot cards and goods from other small, queer-owned businesses. Adding to the pop-up’s immersive atmosphere, Burns offers tarot readings from inside the cab of the truck.

Originally from Panama City, Burns moved to Pensacola to earn her English degree from the University of West Florida. Her academic background and passion for literature helped shape the vision behind Perfect Day Books.

While Pensacola boasts a growing and vibrant writing community, Burns saw a noticeable lack of independent bookstores and felt compelled to help fill that gap.

“I hate censorship," Burns said. "Besides that, I feel that, I feel that there is such a blossoming and beautiful writing community in this area despite the lack of indie bookstores. I knew I wanted to contribute to and help revive the literary scene in Pensacola. In short, I want to make reading cool again.”

The mobile bookstore’s physical design is as intentional as its inventory. The truck renovation was a total do-it-yourself project, which was completed in just six weeks with the help of family.

“Our aesthetics needed to speak our values just as much as our messaging does: cozy, bold, elevated, alternative and authentic,” Burns explained.

Through its mobile format and carefully crafted aesthetic, Perfect Day offers a welcoming space for readers seeking connection, creativity and a little literary rebellion. Perfect Day maintains an interactive calendar and active social media presence to share pop-up locations and upcoming event details.

Golden Gypsy Jewelry This Pensacola-based pop up offers custom-fit, affordable fine jewelry with a personal touch.

Owned and operated by Alyssa Tobar, the brand focuses on creating meaningful, longlasting pieces of jewelry using 14k gold-filled and sterling silver materials.

Originally from Corpus Christi, Texas, Tobar moved to the Pensacola area with her family in 2016. She embarked on her first entrepreneurial journey with a local pop-up clothing boutique catering to mothers and children, but her focus shifted in 2022, when she began incorporating jewelry into the business. Later that same year, she fully transitioned her business to Golden Gypsy Jewelry.

“I fell in love with helping others create pieces that were both memorable and timeless, so I shifted my entire business into jewelry,” Tobar said.

Golden Gypsy Jewelry is most known for its permanent jewelry services, though clasps are also available for customers who prefer removable pieces while still enjoying a tailored experience. Tobar’s jewelry designs are both timeless and sentimental, allowing customers to design pieces that commemorate meaningful moments or relationships.

“I did some research and was immediately drawn to the idea of affordable custom-fit jewelry with quality materials,” Tobar explained. “The idea of using birthstones, initials or any other important elements in a piece that you create and don’t have to worry about tarnishing or the fitting was a no-brainer for me. “ Ranging from a full 10-by-10 foot tent powered by portable generators to intimate in-home party arrangements with minimal equipment, Tobar’s mobile

jewelry shop can easily be adapted for any type of event or location, allowing her to pop up in various locations, including partnering businesses, throughout the Pensacola area.

Tobar is also a regular vendor at local markets. With a completely mobile setup, She is also able to bring her services on the road for private events, parties and other special occasions. She also maintains a permanent studio space inside Redefyne off of East 9 Mile Road, offering customers the accessibility of having a more permanent location to visit.

ensacola Opera will open its 43rd Season with Verdi’s La traviata on January 23 and 25, and close with Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Oklahoma! on March 13 and 15 at the historic Pensacola Saenger Theatre.

This beautiful production, conducted by Music Director, Cody Martin, and directed by Rebecca Herman from Austin, TX, brings Verdi’s heartbreakingly beautiful score to life with a star-studded cast, lavish sets and dazzling costumes that transport audiences to the elegant world of 19th-century Paris.

Widely regarded as one of the greatest operas ever written, La traviata follows the love story of Violetta, one of the most beautiful and desired courtesans in all of Paris, and Alfredo, a romantic

countryboy who lacks the polish and sophistication of Parisian society. When Alfredo’s father, Giorgio Germont, forbids the relationship, Violetta waits for Alfredo to return to her so they can be together again. Fighting tuberculosis, Violetta eventually succumbs to her illness and uses her final breaths to declare her undying love for Alfredo, her lover she never got to have.

The passionate Violetta is played by Pensacola Opera favorite Bizhou Chang–last seen as Mimì in our 40th Season production of La bohème–and her lover Alfredo, portrayed by tenor Andrew Morstein, last seen on our stage in Lucia di Lammermoor in 2024. Chang is a Jan Miller Studio Artist alum and has performed with Pensacola Opera on the mainstage and in educational and community programming for over six years. Morstein was new to the company in 2024, and immediately became a crowd-favorite. He came back to perform in the cabaret crossover series, Opera After Dark, to a sold out audience.

Featuring the infamous aria Sempre Libera, La traviata tells a beautiful but heartbreaking story of love, sacrifice and societal constraints that continue to resonate with audiences around the world.

Taylor Hightower, making his company debut as Dr. Grenvil; and current Jan Miller Studio Artists Christine Boddicker as Flora, Jason Edelstein as Barone Douphol, Xiaojie Ji as Gastone de Letorières and Denique Isaac as Annina.

Our principal cast will join an amazing group of volunteer singers known as the Pensacola Opera Chorus. Led by Cody Martin, the Opera Chorus acts as the ensemble in the production and are essential in bringing these stories to life. This season also continues our long-standing relationship with the Pensacola Symphony Orchestra, who brings the music to life for us from the orchestra pit for each production and dancers from Ballet Pensacola.

La traviata promises a grand opera experience that will fill your heart, break it and fill it again with a beautiful score and a timeless story of tragedy and romance.

Performances of La traviata will be held on Friday, January 23 at 7:30 pm and Sunday, January 25 at 2 pm at the Pensacola Saenger Theatre.

Pensacola Opera will close its mainstage season with one of the most influential pieces of the American musical repertoire—Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Oklahoma! on March 13 and 15 at the historic Saenger Theatre in downtown Pensacola.

Oklahoma! will truly be a celebration of the performing musical arts in our community.
