One of my favorite parts of putting together each issue is discovering the stories that showcase just how much creativity and talent exist right here in our own community. Sometimes, those stories are hiding in plain sight, waiting for us to take a closer look. And that’s exactly what you’ll find in this month’s issue.

Creativity also takes root in unexpected places, like the growing network of Emerald Coast Plant Libraries. These free neighborhood libraries are helping residents share plants, cuttings and gardening knowledge. Artist, Dannis E. Young

Known to many as “The Bowl Artisan,” local woodturner Dannis E. Young has built a reputation for transforming raw timber into one-of-a-kind functional art that celebrates both craftsmanship and nature. From hand-turned bowls and intricate woodcarvings to rustic furniture and wood-burned pieces, his creations are designed to be as practical as they are beautiful, offering “a little bit of sunshine and nature” to any home.

Raised in Meridian, Miss., Young developed an early love for the outdoors and creating with natural materials. His journey into woodturning began in Industrial Ar ts classes, where experimenting with a lathe sparked a passion that would shape a lifelong pursuit. You can find Young’s work at Blue Morning Gallery in downtown Pensacola, and he regularly shares behind-thescenes glimpses of his creative process on Instagram at @dey_woodturning. He also accepts custom commissions, giving anyone the opportunity to own a handcrafted piece created specifically for their home or collection.

What is your absolute favorite wood to turn, Every turner has a signature style. What and why? elements make a piece unmistakably yours?

I guess some people would say that I specialize in working with spalted wood, which is known for taking quite a while to reach its perfection, long after the tree has been harvested. The spalting process is when saprotrophic mushrooms begin decomposing the wood. They release acids and enzymes that break down dead tissue into smaller molecules; they can absorb decaying wood, plants and sometimes animal spalting can also occur in living trees, under stress as well, creating food for a saprotrophic mushroom. The end result creates beautiful lines and patterns throughout the wood. It is a very unique and beautiful process. In keeping with the natural processes and beauty of the wood I do my best to only use natural finishes so that my pieces aren’t likely to cause or trigger any health issues for people in their homes; and upkeep is quite easy.

I have had the pleasure of creating hundreds of original unique bowls, vases, goblets, lidded vessels, urns and all manner of home décor, as well as items for everyday use. I began working with resin added to the wood and even doing inlays of abalone, opal, turquoise, etcetera.

I’ve started to make ink pens from pinecones and resin or from exotic woods. I like to use beeswax and mineral oil, sometimes shellac. Also, I find that these materials go far in small trinkets and jewelry.

Can you share a story about a particularly spectacular 'catch' or a piece breaking on the lathe, and what you learned from it?

Once I was turning a burl and the piece separated due to a bark inclusion, resulting in a trip to the emergency room. I learned to stay out of the way!

Enchanted Drawings Enchanted Drawings Where Animation History Comes to Life

For generations, animated characters have made us laugh, cry and quote our favorite one-liners long after the credits roll. Whether it was Bugs Bunny outsmarting Elmer Fudd, Pinocchio dreaming of becoming a real boy or Betty Boop’s unmistakable charm, these iconic characters share one origin story — they all began as simple sketches.

Now, visitors can step behind the scenes at the Pensacola Museum of Art’s Enchanted Drawings: The Magic of Animation. Featuring more than 50 original works from the private collection of Pensacola residents Gerald and Vicki Adcox, the exhibit offers a rare glimpse into the artistry and craftsmanship that brought some of the world’s most recognizable animated films and characters to life.

Original concept sketches, hand-painted production cels and lithographs reveal the painstaking process that transformed simple pencil lines into timeless screen icons.

Alongside historic animation tools, classic cartoons and interactive displays, the exhibit traces the evolution of the art form from its early experiments with moving images to the golden age of hand-drawn animation.

At the heart of the exhibit is a personal story that began more than 40 years ago with an unexpected stop at a shopping mall. Gerald Adcox still remembers the moment. In 1985, while visiting Chicago with his wife, Vicki, the couple came across a small display of animation art. There was no auction or gallery opening, just a chance encounter that would spark a lifelong passion for collecting.

One of those first purchases was a Bugs Bunny animation cel. That single piece became the foundation for a collection that has grown into roughly 70 original drawings, production cels and lithographs spanning some of animation’s most celebrated studios and artists.

While their initial conversations centered on Gerald’s broader interests in art and vintage guitars, the discussion soon turned to animation and the remarkable collection he and Vicki had quietly built over the years.

“I had the opportunity to meet Gerald and visit his office,” Croghan said. “He has an amazing collection of modern art, vintage guitars and illustrations from renowned animators and artists.

As we talked, we developed the idea for an exhibit focused on storytelling through animation.”

Rather than simply hanging artwork on gallery walls, Croghan wanted the exhibit to reveal the story behind the medium by showing visitors how animation evolved, how the process works and how much craftsmanship is hidden within every frame.

“Our goal was to show original illustrations alongside early methods of creating movement, filmmaking techniques and classic animated cartoons,” Croghan explained. “The exhibit unfolds chronologically and ends with a drawing station where visitors can actually try it themselves.”

That chronological journey begins with The Enchanted Drawing (1900), one of the earliest films to incorporate animated elements. From there,

the exhibit traces the rise of animation studios, the emergence of feature-length animated films and the arrival of television cartoons.

Along the way, visitors see how innovations like hand-painted cels, rotoscoping, the multiplane camera and advances in color helped shape the industry and pave the way for today’s digital animation.

The history is brought to life through original sketches, production cels and lithographs from influential artists, alongside historic devices on loan from the Pensacola History Museum — including a magic lantern and a zoetrope that demonstrate some of the earliest attempts to create motion. Screenings of landmark shorts such as Prest-O Change-O and Dizzy Dishes further connect the artwork on display to the finished films audiences know and recognize.

Those films also mark key milestones in animation history. Prest-O Change-O (1939), directed by Chuck Jones, features an early appearance of the character who would eventually become Bugs Bunny, while Dizzy Dishes (1930) introduced Betty Boop to audiences.

Selecting what to include was no easy task.

Croghan said the Adcox collection is extensive, and the goal was to choose works that best illustrate the artistic evolution of animation.

“We wanted to create a survey of animation history,” Croghan explained. “Each piece serves as a step in that journey. We focused on strong examples of original drawings and hand-painted cels that show process, character development and the golden era of American animation.”

What makes the collection especially distinctive is not just the artwork, but the relationships behind it. Adcox’s personal friendship with legendary animator Chuck Jones adds rare historical context. Jones, who helped create characters like Bugs Bunny, the Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote, also became part of Adcox’s collecting journey.

“Gerald had a personal relationship with Chuck Jones,” Croghan said. “That connection helped spark his passion for collecting, and his stories add provenance and depth to the work.”

Adcox recalls visiting Jones at his home in Newport Beach and later interviewing him during his time working in California.

“I was able to go to his home and interview him,” Adcox said. “A couple pieces came directly from him.”

He also visited the studio of Jones’ daughter, Linda, where animation artwork was being prepared for collectors.

Those experiences helped shape a collection that now includes rare and significant pieces. Among them is a hand-painted cel featuring Pinocchio and the Blue Fairy, along with a complete set of

Chuck Jones’ MasterWorks lithographs that reimagine iconic Looney Tunes characters in the styles of renowned artists such as Van Gogh, Dalí, Chagall, Toulouse-Lautrec and Munch.

Croghan describes the exhibit as a playful intersection of fine art history and animation, blending high art references with Looney Tunes humor. That approach continues at the exhibit’s final stop: a drawing station where visitors can learn to sketch familiar characters using stepby-step instructions. It has quickly become one of the most popular parts of the show.

“Nick did such a great job putting together the exhibit,” Adcox said. “People are learning how to draw characters like the Road Runner and Pepe Le Pew. There’s always someone at that table when I stop in for a visit.”

For Adcox, sharing that world with the public has been deeply rewarding after decades of collecting.

“It’s just a happy exhibit,” he said. “It brings people back to their childhood. Everything in it makes you smile.”

Whether you’re an animation fan or someone who still recognizes “ What ’s up, Doc?,” Enchanted Drawings offers a chance to revisit beloved characters while discovering the artistry, craftsmanship and history that brought them to life.

First Fridays Art Walk

Downtown’s New Creative Tradition

T

here’s a new way to explore downtown’s creative side: gallery doors swing open, music drifts onto the sidewalks and artists step out from behind their mediums to greet visitors. Each stop reveals a new collection of paintings, sculptures, photography and handcrafted works waiting to be discovered.

That's the vision behind First Fridays Art Walk, a new monthly event bringing residents and visitors together downtown for an evening of creativity, connection and exploration.

“It’s more than an art event: it’s an opportunity to connect with the artists, the community and the creativity that make downtown Pensacola so special,” Organizer and Co-Founder of First Fridays Art Walk Gretchen Paux said. “Art is the invitation. Culture is the experience. Creativity is the energy. Connection is the outcome.

That’s the heart of First Fridays Art Walk.”

Held on the first Friday of every month from 5:30 to 7:30 pm, the free, family-friendly event invites everyone to experience downtown through its galleries, businesses and creative spaces. Guests can wander at their own pace, meet local artists, enjoy live music and discover the unique personalities that make each gallery a destination. Complimentary trolley service makes it easy to hop from one location to the next, encouraging visitors to experience more of downtown's growing art community in a single evening.

While First Fridays Art Walk is a new event, the inspiration behind it has been years in the making.

For decades, Blue Morning Gallery has welcomed visitors on the first Friday of each month for featured artist receptions, a tradition that has become a favorite among local art lovers. Inspired by the success of those events, Blue Morning Gallery ceramic artist Gretchen Paux saw an opportunity to expand that experience beyond a single gallery and began discussing the idea with fellow downtown artist and gallery owner, Sarah Soule Webb.

“Blue Morning Gallery had been hosting First Fridays for several years thanks to Sue Woodson, Beth Stage and the gallery members,” Paux said. “I approached Sarah Soule Webb with the idea of expanding Blue Morning Gallery’s First Fridays into a collaborative Art Walk that would connect artists, galleries and creative spaces throughout downtown. It quickly became clear that we shared the same vision, and together we set out to bring it to life.”

Together, they imagined something bigger: a collaborative event that would shine a spotlight on all of downtown's galleries, in addition to a few participating businesses, while celebrating the artists who help define Pensacola's creative identity.

Their vision quickly gained support from the Downtown Improvement Board (DIB), which partnered with the organizers to help bring the event to life. The monthly Art Walk is also supported by downtown business sponsors whose contributions help fund complimentary trolley service for attendees. Current sponsors include the DIB, Pensacola Title Company and Boyles & Boyles Attorneys-At-Law. The inaugural Art Walk debuted in June, just after the completion of the New Palafox streetscape improvements, inviting visitors to experience downtown's refreshed streets while exploring its flourishing arts scene. The response was immediate, with both residents and visitors embracing the opportunity to spend an evening moving from gallery to gallery, meeting artists and experiencing downtown in a fresh, engaging way.

Today, 10 participating galleries and businesses open their doors for the monthly celebration, each offering something uniquely its own. From complimentary refreshments to live music and highlights of different artist works, guests can expect something different at each establishment.

In addition to committing to monthly participation, each location must offer an experience such as live music, an artist demonstration or another interactive activity. The focus is on showcasing permanent galleries, studios and creative businesses that help define downtown Pensacola’s creative identity year-round.

Visitors can browse the member-created works at Blue Morning Gallery, explore the diverse collections at Quayside Art Gallery and Artel Art Gallery, or stop by Sarah Soule Webb Studios to meet one of the event's founders.

In many ways, First Fridays Art Walk is about more than art. It's about celebrating the people who create it, the businesses that support it and the community that gathers to experience it together.

Artworks Seville, Joe Hobbs Gallery, Reverie Fine Art Collective, Brent Lofts Art Gallery, Noteworthy Gift and Engel & Völkers round out the current lineup, creating a route that showcases the diversity of artistic talent found throughout downtown.

Each location offers its own atmosphere and perspective, from contemporary fine art and photography to ceramics, sculpture, jewelry and mixed-media creations. More importantly, visitors will have the opportunity to meet some of the artists themselves, hear the stories behind the work and experience the creative process firsthand.

That personal connection is what sets First Fridays Art Walk apart.

Rather than simply viewing artwork on a wall, guests are invited into the creative community itself with one conversation, one gallery and one discovery at a time.

Paux and Webb hope even more galleries, studios and creative businesses will join future Art Walks, continuing to strengthen the collaborative spirit that inspired the event from the beginning.

The event is open to brick-and-mortar businesses located within the downtown district, and must be within a reasonable distance of the complimentary trolley route to ensure the event remains accessible and connected. Participating locations are required to feature handmade art or the work of local artists through exhibitions or artist partnerships.

It reflects a downtown where creativity isn't confined to one block or one building: it spills onto sidewalks, fills storefronts and invites everyone to become part of the story.

Whether you're an avid collector, a casual art enthusiast or simply looking for a memorable way to spend a Friday evening, First Fridays Art Walk offers the perfect excuse to slow down, explore downtown and see Pensacola through the eyes of the artists who call it home.

Emerald Coast Plant Libraries Flourish Across Northwest Florida

By Morgan Cole Houseplants and gardening have blossomed into more than just hobbies — they've become a way for people to connect with nature and one another.

Across Northwest Florida, a growing network of community plant libraries is making it easier than ever for gardeners to share cuttings, discover new varieties and build connections rooted in a shared love of growing things.

One visit might inspire you to leave behind a baby spider plant for another plant lover to find.

The next could introduce you to a cutting you've been searching for, or even another local gardener browsing the shelves. At a time when so much of life happens online, these little libraries create opportunities for neighbors to connect the oldfashioned way, one plant at a time.

At first glance, they might look like ordinary little wooden boxes tucked outside a neighborhood home or local business. Inside, you’ll find shelves stocked with houseplant cuttings, outdoor plants, vegetable seedlings, flower seeds and even the occasional gardening book, all free for anyone to take or share.

Think of them as the plant world's version of a Little Free Library.

Instead of borrowing books, visitors exchange plants, seeds and gardening supplies, creating a community resource that grows through generosity.

Whether you're an experienced plant parent with more propagations than windowsill space or you're bringing

That spirit of sharing continues through the Emerald Coast Plant Libraries, a grassroots effort launched by local plant enthusiast Angela Blake in May 2021.

What began as a single free plant-sharing station has since grown into a network of community plant libraries scattered throughout Northwest Florida, each maintained by volunteers who believe plants are meant to be shared.

Blake said the idea began to take shape during the COVID-19 pandemic, when houseplants surged in popularity and many people were searching for meaningful ways to connect.

"It was a time when we were so divided, we needed community more than ever," Blake said. "I knew people had a surplus of certain plants and were hoping for other plants, and I knew this was a great community to share resources."

After discovering a successful community plant library in Tallahassee, Blake decided to bring the concept home, never expecting it to grow so quickly.

The response was immediate. By the end of its opening weekend, that first library had inspired two more, and within just a few months, the idea had taken root in more than 20 neighborhoods across Escambia and Santa Rosa counties.

Today, more than 30 active plant libraries continue the tradition of sharing throughout Northwest Florida.

The movement extends well beyond the libraries themselves. Over the years, the Emerald Coast Plant Libraries Facebook group has grown into a thriving online community where members post photos of their latest finds, announce freshly stocked libraries, trade gardening tips and organize local plant swaps. It's also a place where newcomers can ask questions, identify mystery cuttings and find encouragement from experienced gardeners.

While Blake has since stepped away from leading the organization to focus on other professional and personal goals, the community she helped build continues to thrive under the leadership of longtime volunteer James Brewster-Rogers, who

For Blake, however, the libraries have always been about more than exchanging plants.

“It brings people together,” Blake said. “I heard countless stories of hosts tending to the stands and a visitor arriving, and they struck up a conversation and made new friends. Some of them remain very close friends even to this day.”

For anyone looking to visit a plant library for the first time, the Emerald Coast Plant Libraries Facebook group is the best place to start. A pinned post features a running list of active library locations throughout the region, while members regularly share photos of newly stocked shelves so visitors can see what’s available before heading out.

What keeps these libraries thriving isn’t a long list of rules, it’s the simple understanding that everyone has something to share.

Visitors are welcome to take what they need and, whenever possible, leave behind plants, seeds or gardening supplies for someone else to enjoy.

That simple exchange helps keep the shelves stocked and the libraries growing right alongside the communities they serve.

A few simple courtesies help make the experience enjoyable for everyone. Visitors are encouraged to take only what they'll realistically care for, leaving plenty for others to enjoy. Donations should be healthy, pest-free and, whenever possible, clearly

labeled so new plant parents know exactly what they're bringing home.

Seeds are best packaged in labeled envelopes, and most library hosts ask that invasive species or diseased plants not be left behind. Blake also encourages visitors to be mindful of the private properties where many libraries are located by respecting yards, driveways and landscaping while they browse.

"It was a time when we were so divided, we needed community more than ever. I knew people had a surplus of certain plants and were hoping for other plants, and I knew this was a great community to share resources."

If you happen to stop by and find empty shelves, don't assume the library has been abandoned.

Many are restocked throughout the week as volunteers and neighbors drop off fresh cuttings after pruning houseplants, dividing perennials or collecting seeds from their gardens. One visit may offer only a few options, while the next could reveal an entirely new selection.

The idea of free, accessible gardening resources extends beyond plant libraries. For those looking to start a vegetable garden, grow fresh herbs or add more flowers to their landscape, the West Florida Public Libraries (WFPL) system offers another opportunity to get growing.

Branch locations throughout Escambia County now offer Community Seed Libraries, where visitors can check out up to five packets of seeds at no cost. There are no due dates, late fees or returns required. Instead, the program encourages residents to grow their own food, support pollinators and experience gardening, regardless of experience or budget.

Seed selections vary throughout the year but often include vegetables, herbs, flowers and native plants well suited to the Gulf Coast climate. Gardeners who successfully harvest seeds from their own plants are encouraged to donate extras back to the collection, helping the program continue to grow season after season.

Together, these community plant libraries and public seed libraries are making gardening more affordable, accessible and communityfocused. Whether you're bringing home your first cutting, discovering a new heirloom tomato variety or sharing seeds saved from your own garden, these free resources make it easy to grow your garden while connecting with others along the way.

Five years after launching the first plant library, Blake says the project's greatest success isn't the number of locations or the thousands of plants that have changed hands, it's the community that has grown around them.

"It's taught me so much about people, human nature, and it's reminded me how wonderful people are despite our many differences,"

Blake said. "It is a beautiful story of community and grassroots origins turned into something that 's been able to be maintained for five years now."

That spirit of generosity continues to thrive through the volunteers, library hosts and gardeners who keep the shelves stocked and support one another in ways that often extend well beyond sharing plants.

"We see some incredible acts of people helping each other either with resources, plants or even cleaning up people's yards," Blake said. "It's been a wonderful community project, and I'm eternally grateful to James for keeping the group so well maintained. He's definitely put in a lot of time and dedication."

Pensacola's longest-running and largest craft beer tasting event returns to downtown Pensacola on September 11 from 5:30 to 9 pm, celebrating its 30th anniversary with an evening of craft brews, community and remembrance.

The Emerald Coast Beer Festival brings together breweries from across the region, giving attendees the chance to sample a wide variety of craft beers while supporting a meaningful cause. This year's festival takes on added meaning as it commemorates the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, giving attendees a chance to come together in remembrance while enjoying one of Pensacola's favorite annual events.

The festival began as the vision of Steve Freed, one of the founding members of the Escambia Bay Homebrewers (EBHB). Today, the EBHB and Seville Quarter host the annual celebration, providing a place for the community to tap into tasteful beer and appreciate artisanal breweries from all over the southeast.

“We have in the neighborhood of about 100 members in the club now between Escambia and Santa Rosa counties,” EBHB President Paul Wallis said. “They brew a variety. You think Beer Fest — it’s all beer. Escambia Home Brewers is all about meads, wine and beer. So, we've got the whole gamut of brewers in the club, and there's even a few distillers, as personal distilling has become more acceptable.”

Originally created as a fundraiser for the club, the festival has grown into the largest beer festival on the Gulf Coast and one of the top beer festivals in Pensacola. The festival is a gathering place for beer enthusiasts, brewers and the community, providing an

exciting and welcoming environment for brewers to showcase a wide selection of craft beers, meads and wines.

Today, proceeds continue to support the EBHB while also benefiting local charities. This year’s festival will benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Florida, with a portion of the proceeds helping the organization continue its mission of connecting children facing adversity with caring adult mentors who provide guidance, encouragement and support.

“A lot of really good brewers are home brewers, and this is a big event, so they go all out and brew some really interesting beers — beers you probably never thought of tasting.”

Along with supporting a great cause, attendees can sample over 250 craft beers produced by breweries of all sizes from all over the country. A variety of artisanal meads and premium wines will also be available for tasting, providing plenty of options to explore throughout the evening.

“You can go through and taste little samples here and there, and if you like it, you get a little bit more,” Wallis said. “If you don't, find a swell bucket and pour it out.”

Major breweries such as Anheuser Busch, Miller and Sam Adams will be at the event. Smaller breweries and their craft beverages will also feature at the event strongly, including Chattahoochee Brewing Company from Phenix City, Alabama; Urban South from New Orleans and Boston Beer Company.

Patrons can look forward to sampling brews from a variety of local breweries at the festival, including The Prost Office Brewery (Milton), Rollins Distillery (Gulf Breeze), Yale Brothers (Navarre), McGuire's and Pensacola Bay Brewery.

As usual, a number of different local homebrewers clubs will also feature alongside the big-name and local breweries to showcase bold artisanal brews that few patrons may find in liquor stores.

“So far, we have nine different homebrew clubs that are coming this year,” Wallis said. “A lot of really good brewers are home brewers, and this is a big event, so they go all out and brew some really interesting beers — beers you probably never thought of tasting.”

At the event, be on the lookout for clubs such as Random Acts of Brewing, Knights of the Hop Table, Crescent City Homebrewers and many more.

aval Air Station (NAS) Pensacola Sailors, civilian staff and families attended the Pensacola Blue Wahoos Salute to Service baseball game at Admiral Fetterman Field in downtown Pensacola on July 11.

The game featured the Pensacola Blue Wahoos annual call sign jersey event, honoring naval aviation tradition by showcasing call signs on the players’ jerseys. Call signs are a method of identifying and communicating with aviators over radios. New naval aviators are assigned a call sign by senior personnel, Capt. Chandra “Mamasan” Newman, NAS a nickname they’ll take with them throughout their Pensacola’s commanding of f icer, threw the career.
