Ah, December. The year’s homestretch gives us 31 days to recollect with friends and family about 2015’s joys, triumphs and opportunities. For me, this year’s greatest hits include more time spent in Pensacola’s thriving Downtown corridor, promotion to captain of this fair publication, admittance into the Chamber’s Leadership Pensacola class, and being an audience and beneficiary of all the wonderful things happening in this city.

For Pensacola, 2015 was one for the books. With some high highs and some very low lows, this year taught us the meaning of growing pains, and that the joy on the other side of those is often worth the discomfort. We’ve endured City Council drama, private development postponement, and the deaths of a number of influential Pensacola citizens.

But we’ve also seen resolve in the face of all that, and with that resolve, a record number of annual events and festivals, bed tax increases, RESTORE money allocation, groundswell citizen action,

and an entrepreneurial spirit that I would argue is unrivaled among our neighbors in Northwest Florida. And so, to reflect but also to learn, we present our annual Favorite Things on page 10. Relive it all with us, and look forward to the future.

On the heels of many successes is the impressive talent that Pensacola continues to draw. It is one of the marks of a great city that respected artists from around the globe are attracted there to perform.

In the recent months we’ve seen Rascal Flatts and Carlos Mencia. In the coming months we’ll see Chris Thomas King and Brian Regan. We have an extensive Q&A with the former on page 7. King is returning to Pensacola, and bringing his jazzy New Orleans funk with him.

Winterfest is back this year, as it is every year. And like every year, I swear I’m going to go. Honestly, I’m not sure how it’s passed under my radar so often, so I’ve put it on the top of my list. A trolley ride through Downtown with stops to visit all the most important symbols of the holiday season brought to life by some of the area’s best talent is something that really should be more of a priority for me.

And so this year it shall be! If you see me out, say hi and congratulate me for leaving the house on what will almost assuredly be an only somewhat cool night for which I am extremely overdressed.

Finally, this month, we bring you something really, really cool: a familyfriendly entertainment concept that is completely unlike anything Pensacola currently has. Escape on Palafox is an interactive puzzle where participants have to use their wits to escape a themed room, and, of course, have a blast doing it. You can bet this new addition to Downtown will be among my Favorite Things for 2016!

Chris Thomas King, known as CTK or the King of 21st Century Blues, is a Louisiana-based blues musician and actor who gained recognition for his roles in O Brother, Where Art Thou? and Ray. He has sold over 10 million records in the US and his music has won “Album of the Year” at the Grammy and Country Music awards. Don’t miss CTK, who will be joining the Downtown Crowd at Vinyl Music Hall with bass player Danny Insante and drummer Jeff Mills, at the Christmas Show on Dec. 12.

RETURN OF THE KING

BY DAWN GRESKO What was it like to be the son of legendary blues musician, “Rockin’” Tabby Thomas?

I was steeped in the culture of blues because of my dad. I probably wouldn’t be playing music today if my dad had not opened Tabby’s Blue Box, his blues club or juke joint, when I was still a young teenager in 1979.

However, once I did forge a career playing the guitar and performing the blues early on in my formative years, it was a little frustrating to be known as Tabby’s son. It took awhile to find a way out of his shadow.

Tabby’s Blue Box in Baton Rouge attracted blues lovers from around the world. Were there any performers you saw there who influenced your music?

I played there every weekend for about ten years straight. My influences were all of the older Louisiana blues musicians who played together and hung out often at the Blue Box, which was really like the blues “social club” of Louisiana. There was Silas Hogan, Vance “Guitar” Kelly, Moses “Whispering” Smith, and Henry Gray. Gray was a huge influence of mine; he’s a piano man who’s still making the piano do what it do.

When did you become interested in music?

I had access to instruments at a very young age; we had B3 organs and guitars, basically all the band instruments would be stored at our home for when the players rehearsed.

The first instrument I was introduced to was the trumpet when I was around 8 years old. My uncle, who was a player for the Southern University Marching Band, taught me how to play and read music for it. Later I experimented with different instruments

like the drums and piano, but guitar ended up being the instrument that felt very comfortable. I slept with it, and it became an extension of me at a very young age.

When did you start performing professionally?

By the time I was 12 I was a professional musician; professional in the sense that people started paying me to perform. But I was taken out on gigs with older musicians as early as nine-years-old. Those experiences gave me a unique perspective on the blues and its culture that I think very few people in America have; it’s that unique perspective I bring to my recordings, albums and songwriting rather than someone who’s coming at it from an academic point of view.

What literature on the blues sticks out in your mind right now?

When I started reading about blues in literature, I was shocked because it was nothing like my experiences and nothing like what happened during the 25 years my family ran a juke joint. I can tell you a lot of the literature on the blues shouldn’t be taken too seriously. However, there’s a book by MaryBeth Hamilton called In Search of the Blues and hers is one of the first books that really focused on how interlopers, or outsiders, romanticized the myth around blues music and its culture. Her book is important because it calls into question the idea that blues is somehow connected to slavery and that it originated in Mississippi. What I tell people is the blues came from Louisiana and it has nothing to do with slavery or work songs.

You’ve played in several documentaries and movies. What led you to acting?

I was looking into scoring movies but not necessarily getting in front of the camera. Long story short, an acting director contacted my manager after hearing my interviews on NPR in Philadelphia and asked if I would do a screen test. Once I did O Brother Where Art Thou? and it became a huge success, that led to other opportunities. From there it was a natural progression to Ray and portraying another blues musician, Lowell Fulson. Acting is a beautiful experience, but it doesn’t give the same reward, not the same immediacy, as you get when you’re performing music for a live audience.

Anything in the works now that you’d like to mention?

I’ve been working on a new album for two years that I wanted to get out by Christmas, but it should be out next year. It’s taking so long because it’s not something I put together lightly. I’ve been writing a book, which should see the light of day sometime next year, too. It’s a memoir that’s also going to argue the history of jazz and blues is too steeped in outdated, 19th-century Victorian thinking. I’ve gained a lot of respect for writers because it’s not an easy process. I also have two movies in the works; I’ll be playing the lead character in a film about a blues musician, and I’ll be doing scoring for a supernatural movie.

What can we expect at your Christmas show here on Dec. 12?

The audience will get the quintessential CTK experience. I’d say don’t expect a bunch of Christmas tunes. We have some new songs we’ll play along with all the old favorites.

You’ve frequented Pensacola often. Are you excited to return to the stage at Vinyl Music Hall?

I’ve been playing at Vinyl at least two times a year for the past four or five 8 | DOWNTOWNCROWD.COM

years. It’s one of the places the band and I look forward to coming back to because the audience is so used to hearing a diverse selection of music. The audience knows all the musical language, so I don’t lose them if I do a little rap tune, get a little country, or crank up my amplifier and rock out.

Why the blues?

Many people have this preconceived notion about what blues music is supposed to be.

After an upbeat show, I’ve gotten reviews that say I didn’t play the blues music properly because it was too joyous. The whole blues

message gets lost in translation, because many expect it to be “depressing” music. In Louisiana, blues is really a French term used to describe music that is bawdy, risqué, or it pushes the envelope. Blues was subversive music that protested against Victorian prudishness, and today it continues to transform people’s ideas about what’s proper and what’s not. So there’s a rich culture and history of the blues that I want to represent to help overcome the distortion of what blues is and where it comes from.

Beatles at Shea Stadium Tribute Concert

As a Beatles fan who was born in the wrong era and missed out on Beatlemania, I was beyond myself when I heard about Northwest Florida’s ultimate Beatles tribute band: Not Quite Fab. The band blew everyone’s socks off this August at Maritime Park Amphitheater for the 50th Anniversary of Beatles at Shea Stadium tribute concert, as part of the Blues on the Bay Summer Concert Series. Ed Sullivan announced the “not quite” fab four, who had a police escort to the venue before they ran out on stage in matching Shea Stadium jackets. They were joined by special guests Elvis Presley, Jimi Hendrix, Gene Simmons and Sir Elton John.

Old PNJ Building

Gone forever is the eyesore that was the old PNJ building on Jefferson and Romana. Coming soon, as you’ve undoubtedly heard by now, is a multi-use apartment complex with retail and services space courtesy of Downtown’s lord and savior, Quint Studer. The $52 million development should be ready by February 2017, but the hope of tomorrow’s success is already one of my favorite things of 2015. The new space will be a beacon of modernity for Downtown and hopefully the catalyst for many more developments that will sustainably push Pensacola forward.

Your Favorite Thing

Red Haute Royale

Junior League’s fourth annual Red Haute Royale was my first exposure to the casinothemed evening at the Saenger—and what an introduction it was. The black tie-optional event always sells out early, and for good reason. The fundraiser attracts Pensacola’s brightest stars, all dressed to the nines, and a good time always follows. With giveaways, casino games, social eating and drinking, and the historic Saenger Theatre playing the always-sophisticated host, what’s not to love? Personally, I spent two hours playing Blackjack and learned quickly not to hit anything over 17. Next year I’ll be ready to beat the house at their own game.

DIB’s Alcohol Dilemma

In mid-2015, there were rumors that the Downtown Improvement Board had elected to disallow the sale of liquor on the streets during Gallery Night, enforcing what they thought would be a rule that diminished the amount of public intoxication and rowdiness, and improved safety and stability. Backlash from the bars and restaurants quickly followed, and the DIB held a special meeting to hear concerns. Ultimately, the rule did not go through, but the true impressiveness of this ordeal stems from the DIB’s willingness to admit their faults, listen to their constituents, and find new ways to improve the Gallery Night experience for all.

Running of the Chihuahuas

Seville Quarter’s Cinco de Mayo eve nt features a heated race between everyone’s favorite shaky, yappy dogs. I had a persona l stake in 2015’s race as my own schnauzer/ Chihuahua mixes, Minnie and Daisy, ran their little hearts out attempting to gain my hard-wo n approval. I’m happy to report that Daisy came in fourth overall and therefore first in my heart, whi le Minnie has to live with the eternal agony of letting me down. But seriously, the running is one of the last outdoor events in our fair tow n before the weather becomes unbearably hot, and even if you don’t own a little 10-pound bun dle of nerves, you’ll have a good time watching othe rs’ dogs veer predictably off track. Plus ther e’s Corona.

The Burger Factory

This new restaurant on South Nav y Boulevard may not have the most impressive name, but darn it if they don’t have some of the best new burgers in Pensacola. Seriously, I don’t know how they make it (and maybe I don ’t want to know how the burger-sausage gets made), but every bite is more sumptuous and satisfying than the last. Plus, the range of cus tomizability is unmatched. It may be a little off the beaten path, but do yourself a favor and che ck out the Burger Factory the next time you’re on the west side of town or heading to NAS. You won’t be disappointed. The burgers I’ve had there are definitely among my favorite things of 2015.

From poles decked in red ribbons and swirling with evergreen to little elves peeping out at you from the streets of Downtown Pensacola, there’s plenty of signs that Pensacola’s Winterfest has returned with its annual array of holiday festivities.

Choo choo! Did you hear that? That’s the sound of model trains in action this holiday season with Model Trains on the Move, coming to Pensacola Museum of Art starting on Saturday, Dec. 7. There will be guaranteed fun for the whole family, especially model-train lovers. Enjoy art activities, holiday refreshments, and two scenic railroad systems that will be in operation.

Don’t miss the train, because with museum admission on Dec. 7 you can get a special discount on Performance Tour tickets.

Winterfest’s premier Performance Tours are boasting “bigger and better” in 2015. Frosty, Candycane, Gingerbread and Snowflake are the restored red trolleys that serve as the stage during 60-minute tours that guide you through 16 performances on Dec. 5, 11 and 18-20. You have the option of selecting your trolley when you purchase tickets for $20 per adult and $15 per child.

ON PALAFOX Escape the humdrum of your week with a new interactive attraction in Downtown Pensacola.

Escape on Palafox is a place for the detective and adventurer in all of us to truly shine, as participants are locked in one of three rooms full of mystery and challenge. No longer are you just a business person or service worker; you’re a secret agent, an art thief, a paranormal investigator.

The brainchild of Patrick Elebash, who runs Elebash Jewelers, Escape on Palafox is another entry in what has become a booming industry in many larger cities in the country over the past couple years. Elebash was first exposed to the concept in Las Vegas and quickly thought that the interactive attraction would be a great fit in Pensacola’s burgeoning Downtown.

“They’re big in New Orleans, DC, Nashville and other big cities,” said Elebash. “These family-friendly mystery rooms feature puzzles and games that really bring people together and challenge them.”

Elebash worked with some game engineers from Hungary to develop the puzzles, and he’s very excited about the upcoming three mystery rooms.

“There’s a secret agent room where a double agent must be identified in a hideout,” said Elebash. “There’s a museum robbery room where you have to steal a precious egg before the time is up. And finally we have a haunted room that is decorated to

look like a 1950s girl’s bedroom.

Each scenario is a video game brought to life.”

The only way to solve the puzzles and get out of the room is to work together, observe, gather clues, and let the game snowball into an experience of using your mind to conquer each new task and challenge.

The rooms are immaculately adorned to transport participants into the plot and be fully invested in its outcome. Technology has been utilized to make the experience as immersive as possible, and Elebash said that friends and strangers alike will have to work together to solve the mystery in less than an hour.

Some of the games are so complex that the success rate is forecast to be around 50 percent.

“Half of the time, you won’t make it out of there in the allotted hour,” said Elebash. “You’ll have to focus and really keep your wits about you.”

It is for that reason that Elebash recommended that only individuals over the age of 13 get involved with the games. Each room is completely family-friendly, an emphasis of the game-makers, but some of the puzzles are too difficult for young children to comprehend.

“This is really different than anything Pensacola has seen,” said Elebash. “We’re excited for people to try their hand at the different scenarios.”

Given the limited repeatability of solved games, Elebash is

planning to change them out every six to 12 months, in order to keep things fresh and satisfied customers coming back.

For those worried about their ability to solve the problems, each scenario will have a gamemaker who can keep players safe and feed clues to groups having difficulty.

Between four and eight people are recommended per room, though if a large family of 10 wanted to have a game to themselves, the Escape staff could accommodate that. For those who come with a friend, they may be paired with strangers to meet the minimum room requirements.

Elebash promised, though, that the puzzles are as fun with strangers as they are with friends.

Reservations are not required but recommended and can be made at escapeonpalafox.com.

At the beginning, Escape on Palafox will be open four days a week, Thursday through Sunday, with nighttime room on Thursday and Friday, and all-day rooms on Saturday and Sunday. A pricing structure has not been worked out yet, but Elebash wants to keep the cost consistent with the attraction’s family-friendliness.

“This can be great for businesses and youth groups, too,” said Elebash. “Nothing teaches you the value of communication, teamwork and leadership like being locked together in a room for an hour, with only your wits and your friends to help you escape.”

STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS RELEASE DATE: December 18 CAST: Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, John Boyega, Daisy Ridley KRAMPUS RELEASE DATE: December 4 CAST: Allison Tolman, Adam Scott, Toni Collette, David Koechner What I got from the preview: As joyful Christmas bells chime in the background, a family gathers together for their annual holiday feast. The happiness of the season slowly erodes as arguments break out, long-standing disagreements emerge, and a small boy wishes the worst on his family. Soon, the power goes out and a demonic presence begins haunting the night’s proceedings. The spirit of Krampus, Santa’s evil, horned counterpart, is paying the family a terrifying visit in this horror comedy.

Most notable for: Horror-comedies are too few and far between in this age of foundfootage horror and gross-out dude humor. Even more rare is the holiday horror-comedy.

That novelty plus a great cast helps this movie stand out from the season’s holiday pandering and Oscar bait.

Unqualified critical observation: A year ago, I had never even heard of Krampus. Now the guy has a movie to galvanize his existence in pop culture. I don’t know a lot about the legend, but I’m excited to learn more.

SISTERS RELEASE DATE: December 18 CAST: Amy Poehler, Tina Fey, Kate McKinnon, John Leguizamo What I got from the preview: The two queens of modern-day comedy reunite for their first movie since the incredible Baby Mama. Each plays against type: Poehler as the shy, conservative sister and Fey as the sex-crazed party animal. Together, they decide to throw one last rager in their childhood home before their parents sell the property.

Ill-advised shenanigans, slurred karaoke, and drunken sex ensues, as Poehler and Fey prove they’ve successfully transitioned to R-rated territory.

Most notable for: Releasing the same day as Star Wars. That’s a bold strategy. If anyone can pull it off, it’s my girls Amy and Tina.

Unqualified critical observation: Raunchy female comedy is new to the mainstream, with this year’s Trainwreck being the first notable example. Saturday Night Live alums bring their own brand of the trend to this movie, and while some jokes from the trailer fall flat, I’ll still happily pay the price of admission after being told Star Wars is sold out for the next three weeks.

What I got from the preview: We journey back to a galaxy far, far away with characters old and new as John Williams’ score swells and signature Star Wars iconography flashes across the screen—the Millennium Falcon, X-Wings, Lightsabers, and even the now-defunct helmet of Darth Vader.

As our new heroes, Rey and Finn, ask an aging Han Solo if the stories of the rebellion and the Empire are true, a new threat who promises to make good on Vader’s promises emerges, as we once again become fully invested in these mythological heroes and their aweinspiring adventures.

Most notable for: After thoroughly disappointing prequels, a Disney acquisition, a secretive shoot and recordbreaking ticket presales, the Star Wars

follow up that we deserve is finally coming to theaters.

Unqualified critical observation: The extended trailer premier on ESPN in October marked the first time in years I sat through more than a few minutes of a football game. Few cultural touchstones can bring fans and non-fans alike together in such a way that crashes ticket-purchasing websites and spawns countless theories before we’ve even seen more than three minutes of footage.

If you don’t believe that this picture will fulfill every ounce of nostalgic anticipation while simultaneously becoming the highest-grossing movie in years, well, then you probably don’t believe the Millennium Falcon made the Kessel Run in less than 12 parsecs.

THE BIG SHORT RELEASE DATE: December 23 CAST: Brad Pitt, Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling, Christian Bale What I got from the preview: In the mid-2000s, as the housing industry was going strong and sub-prime mortgage bonds were all the rage, four financial industry outsiders saw early on what the big wigs were too money-blind to see: that clients would soon default on their loans and spread risk throughout the banking industry. When no one would listen, they worked together to take on the big banks for their greed and lack of foresight.

Most notable for: It’s a bold choice to select Adam McKay of Step Brothers, Anchorman and The Other Guys fame to take on a film about the inner workings of the financial industry. It just might work in the movie’s favor that McKay typically deals with cartoonish story elements, ridiculous premises, and is apt to invert the traditional means of telling a well-worn story.

Unqualified critical observation: Many movies in the past few years have tried to distill the complex financial crisis and offer a peak behind the scenes when the ill-fated decisions were made. This iteration of that story features the best cast and most subversive method yet, and seems to be deservedly gunning for more than a few Academy Awards.

JOY RELEASE DATE: December 25 CAST: Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper, Robert De Niro What I got from the preview: The story of a soon-to-be American dynasty across four generations, the titular character must overcome betrayals, setbacks and personal rivalries before inventing the Miracle Mop and becoming a symbol of classic Americana.

Lawrence displays her usual passion and fervor, while the supporting cast wonderfully fills in the background of this sprawling family epic.

Most notable for: The David O. Russell (Silver Linings Playbook, The Fighter, American Hustle) formula works like this: release a movie during the holidays with a beautiful cast and gorgeous cinematography, and hope for some awards. This movie continues that trend.

Unqualified critical observation: The story itself does not much appeal to me, as I was completely unaware the Miracle Mop was even a thing before this trailer. However, I’ll look at beautiful people be masterfully directed in a warm theater any day.

48th Annual Snowball Derby Dec. 2 – 6 Rev up your engines for the 48th Annual Snowball Derby at Five Flags Speedway running from Dec. 2 until Dec. 6. The Snowball Derby has been the premier short track event since 1968, bringing drivers such as Mark Martin, Rusty Wallace, Darrel Waltrip, Bobby Allison and more. The best drivers from across the country show up at the famous half-mile track to try and make the final 30 car field, and the driver who comes out on top after 300 laps can proudly call himself that year’s derby champ. Christmas Parade Dash Dec. 12 Preceding the popular Pensacola Christmas Parade is the 1.2 mile Christmas Parade Dash, sponsored by the Pensacola Runners Association.

With nearly 400 runners each year, the dash uses the parade route prior to the start of the parade. The race begins at 5 pm and takes you through the downtown area lined with thousands of cheering people. The course ends at Plaza Ferdinand where a large candy cane is handed to each finisher. 33rd Annual Pensacola Christmas Parade Dec. 12 Join the holiday fun at the 2015 Pensacola Christmas Parade beginning at 5:15 pm on Saturday, Dec. 12. The event is sponsored by Cox Communications and draws over 50,000 people each year. This year eight bands will be featured from Escambia County, New Orleans and Mississippi. The parade will also feature the nationally renowned Blue Angels flight team and a host of organizations from around the region. PMA presents Mucha: Master Artist of Art Nouveau Through Jan. 2 2016 The works of Czech-born graphic artist Alphonse Mucha are coming to Pensacola Museum of Art thanks to the museum’s collaboration with the Tampa Museum of Art, Boca Raton Museum of Art and Collection of Jack Rennert, New York.

Mucha designed various commercial items, such as posters, magazine covers, and postcards. With selected art from the Rowe Collection, Mucha: Master Artist of Art Nouveau exemplifies the lush intricacy of Mucha’s style and the organic, ornate linear design of the Art Nouveau movement.
