As we move throughout our day— sitting in traffic, running errands, doing routine tasks at the office—what is on your mind? Maybe it’s the kids or the bills. Maybe it’s the latest celebrity feud or political misstep. Or maybe it’s the song that’s playing on the radio or the thought of 5 o’clock happy hour with friends. In this issue, we celebrate the latter two. Looking forward to time with good friends and a seemingly endless Spotify playlist moves my day forward with rhythm, joy and anticipation.

August also marks our annual music issue, and while we traditionally feature Q&As with local bands and upcoming acts, we decided to do something a little differently this year.

Call it non-traditional or a look behind the scenes, but we talked to experts on the technical side of the scene (Blues Angel Music) as well as those at the forefront, dropping the base and spinning those club bangers (DJ Albert Lao). You’ll also find info on musical theater and other alternative rhythmic options.

Not ones to simply rely on our yearly themes, we’re also providing information on other activities to indulge in on our shores and beyond.

One such activity is stargazing, which you can find at Pensacola Beach this summer. Another activity is the Pensacola Comic Convention, featuring actors and artists from yesteryear who still hold a special place in our collective nostalgia.

And since it is the summer movie season, we also chat with the local film club about some non-comic book offerings being offered at your local cinema. These indie gems may not be the most polished, but they are emotional, substantive and impactful.

Stars shoot for the

Your guide to Pensacola’s night sky

T

he night sky: our grand celestial ceiling, which has been a cause for awe and wonder by earth’s down-world denizens and amateur astronomers trying to make sense of the stellar sights above even before Galileo’s telescopic invention.

The Escambia Amateur Astronomy Association (EAAA) is not the only local group to host stargazing events in the Pensacola area, but they are the only group who sets up on local beach locations, including Fort Pickens, Casino Beach, and Big Lagoon State Park.

All sites are fairly close to water because it offers more stable air to look at objects in the sky. Plus, you’re looking out toward the southern sky, which points you away from the light pollution produced by nearby restaurants and businesses.

Although there are between 80 to 100 members of the EAAA, the driving force behind the association is Dr. Wayne Wooten, an astronomer at Pensacola State College—where the group hosts open meetings every third Friday for members and nonmembers alike.

The association is all about community outreach, which is why

they offer free stargazing sessions in all three beach locations. You heard right: there’s no cost for rentals because volunteers allow visitors to use their personal telescopes.

The association also reaches out to schools to offer special chances for students to learn more about astronomy. Last year, the EAAA visited 22 school events in Escambia and Santa Rosa county.

For each stargazing session, the EAAA sets up at least 20 telescopes for any one to stop by and use for their viewing pleasure.

There are two basic types of telescopes, which vary according to model: there are refractors that resemble the scopes carried by sea-faring pirates, and reflectors that use mirrors to project images.

Although binoculars are suggested for beginners, if you’re set on a scope then Dr. Wooten recommends looking at the inexpensive models carried by Toys R Us, efficient for your wallet and for stargazing.

Usually, the best time to observe the skies in Florida’s climate is from October to March, when there is the smallest amount of humidity, which fogs up lens and makes the sky hazy, and least amount of mosquito

activity (since stationary stargazers make easy targets).

However, the EAAA does set up during summer months to give the community a chance to come out and search the skies, especially for special seasonal sights like the Perseid Meteor Shower.

This year, the Perseid Meteor Shower will peak on August 12 and 13, and you can expect to see the EAAA at Casino Beach where they set up for the best view. A waxing gibbous moon may make it more difficult for observers to watch the meteor shower, which will be most visible after 11 pm.

The Perseids, made of tiny space debris from the comet Swift-Tuttle, are named after the constellation Perseus, since the direction in which the shower seems to come in the sky lies in the same direction as the constellation Perseus, found in the northeastern part of the sky.

“Stargazing gets you away from electronics and Facebook,” said Dewey J. Barker, EAAA stargaze and event coordinator.

“That’s not to say social media isn’t a great way to connect with like-minded astronomy lovers. But, it’s a call back to nature, and, if you like to learn new things, there’s a lot to learn in amateur astronomy. With scientific discoveries made just about every day, there’s not enough hours in the day to keep up, which is good because you never run out of new things to discover.”

Even though you might prefer solitary time gazing at the stars, you might first consider checking out one of the public stargazing sessions to get some pointers from seasoned gazers, share your enthusiasm with fellow amateur astronomers, and pick up free charts so you can line up your telescope just right to shoot for the stars.

A Voyage to the Comic Convention The Pensacola Comic Convention is coming to the Pensacola Interstate Fairgrounds and Expo Hall Aug. 20 and 21. Fans of science fiction, horror, anime, gaming, fantasy, comic books, and much more can enjoy the exciting experience. The event will include workshops, screenings, demonstrations, events, costume contests, tournaments, gaming, and discussion panels. Fans can also expect celebrity meet and greets with guests, such as Dennis Rodman, Adrian Paul, Ciara Hanna, Darryl “DMC” McDaniels, Gary Schwartz, Robert LaSardo, Larry Nemecek, Dave Fennoy, Eugene A. Clark, Mike Mundy, Alex Vincent, Michael Beck, and many more. Here at Downtown Crowd, we were able to speak with celebrity guest, Tim Russ (Star Trek: Voyager, Fall Out 4, iCarly), who will be attending the upcoming event.

As an actor, director, and musician, you have had the opportunity to do work in many fields of the entertainment industry. Which of these areas do you feel most passionate about?

I’d have to say I am most passionate about the directing and playing music. Music is a live experience, so it’s always more exciting.

Directing is more of a creative challenge, thus making it more interesting to me. Acting is not to be forgotten though, particularly when it’s a live stage performance.

You have played a variety of roles in both television and film, but you are best known for your role as Tuvok in Star Trek: Voyager.

Was this the type of role you hoped to obtain when you began your career in acting?

My first goal as an actor was to make a living exclusively as an actor, with no other job to survive. I wasn’t particular about the roles during that effort. My second goal was to get a role on a series, again the role didn’t matter. And finally, I set the goal of getting on a series that stayed on the air. And again, that role didn’t matter. I could have just as easily

ended up with a lead role on Bay Watch.

What was it like to go from the role of a Vulcan in Voyager to the lighthearted roles such as Frank the doorman in Samantha Who? and principle Ted Franklin in iCarly?

Well, as an actor it was ironic that I trained for so many years as an actor to portray a range of emotions, and I ended up with the biggest role of my career playing a character that doesn’t show any emotions. It was a minor adjustment, and a welcome change to play other types of roles after Voyager.

What projects are you currently working on that we can anticipate seeing in the near future?

I have just finished directing the feature film, Junkie, with Christian Kane and Anna Esteden, and I am up for several other feature film directing jobs, as well as a couple of supporting roles as an actor in features. I’ll be appearing in a supporting role in the feature film, 5th Passenger. Also, I am going to be finishing up my directing on Renegades Requiem in August.

When requesting autographs, you encourage fans to make a donation to charities such as the Wounded Warriors Project, Wildlife Waystation, and The Midnight Mission. How involved are you with these charities and is there a significant reason you selected them specifically?

I am involved in donating monies to these three charities and encourage my fans to do so also when requesting autographed pictures. I chose those charities because they represent three areas of concern to me. I may change them in the future perhaps to include an environmental charity, as well.

AN INTERVIEW WITH JIM NORTON OF PENSACOLA CINEMA ART · BY DAWN GRESKO

P

erhaps the most underrated form of human creativity is cinema art, as few truly appreciate film’s unique language and aesthetic all its own. Here enters Pensacola Cinema Art (PCA): a nonprofit that began screenings in February 2015, offering the community the chance to view indie films otherwise not shown in the area. Spearheading and facilitating the appreciation of film in our area is Jim Norton, who founded Gulf Breeze Cinema (now known as Tree House Cinema), as well as PCA in 2014, and he volunteers his time to PCA as its primary programmer and consultant. Downtown Crowd caught up with the cinema savant to discuss upcoming showings and plans for Pensacola’s only nonprofit serving up cinema to the community.

Tell us a little about yourself and your role at Pensacola Cinema Art. I’m retired and I live in Wisconsin in the summer season, then Gulf Breeze in the winter season. I volunteer my time to Pensacola Cinema Art. I had partial ownership in over 20 theatres, mostly in Florida and Wisconsin, and I handled film buying and booking for these theatres before my retirement.

In your own words, what is Pensacola Cinema Art? The mission of Pensacola Cinema Art is to bring art films and other cinema to Downtown Pensacola. In addition to myself, we have three volunteers that help out with operations. Although we are a nonprofit separate from the Pensacola Film Festival, we work together with the film festivals to help bring the art of cinema to the community.

Guide us through your film selection process.

The community can either call or email me to make requests for any films they are interested in. We try to program limited release art films, which are not playing at other theatres to widen the choices for the viewers. In most cases our films are not playing at Tree House Cinema in Gulf Breeze, Crescent Theatre in Mobile, or Carmike Cinemas in Pensacola. We play a lot of documentaries and foreign language films, but we also show all of the Oscarnominated short films.

Sunset Song Sept. 1 and Sept. 3 Agyness Deyn, Peter Mullan This period drama, courtesy of Magnolia Pictures, deals with the internal struggle of an individual’s battle for independence against the rigid conformity of the society around her. The story focuses on Chris, a quiet intellectual who is desperate to escape the brutality of her rural community, but the arrival of both love and war change her life forever.

Explain a typical film showing at Pensacola Cinema Art. We have a casual, personal atmosphere at the cinema inside Voices of Pensacola, and we try to talk to each viewer. Either myself or Rodney O’Rear, one of our volunteers, introduces each film to our audience, then takes time for questions and answers after the showing. We introduce each film to our audience before we present it. We present our films in high definition Blu-Ray projection. We have also recently purchased a new sound system. Whenever possible we present our films in closed captions, too.

Tale of Tales TBA Fall 2016 Salma Hayek, John C. Reilly Brace yourselves for a foreign film that blends horror and fantasy in a tale spun around the King of Highhills who is obsessed with a giant flea, two mysterious sisters who provoke the passion of a royal leader, and the Queen of Longtrellis who embarks on a bitter quest prepared to pay the highest price.

Is there anything else you’d like to share about Pensacola Cinema Art, which you think our readers should know?

As Downtown Pensacola continues to grow we plan to increase our number of screenings. So, we want to thank our customers, volunteers and the UWF Historic Trust for all their help with Pensacola Cinema Art. We welcome donations, but more than that we simply ask people to spread the news about Pensacola Cinema Art by word of mouth and via social media.

BLUES ANGEL MUSIC Blues Angel Music is as distinctly Pensacola as its name suggests. Open for almost 20 years, they offer instrument sales like guitar, ukuleles, mandolins, grand pianos and organs; lessons through their school; donations to the community through their Foundation; and more. The organization is more than just a place to pick up replacement strings for your guitar; they are fully committed to increasing the quality of life in the city through music.

“We do all we can to reach out and touch the community,” said Dan Fugate, Blues Angel’s marketing director. “Music makes your brain work better, it helps the left and right sides of your brain talk better, and improves quality of life for those with developmental disabilities.”

They also offer instrument rentals for school band, and all money paid toward the rental is applied to the final price of the instrument. If a child rents a violin and decides they’d prefer a tuba, that cost rolls over to the new instrument. The store, located at 6547 N. Pace Blvd., also features instrument repair and refurbishment.

Owner Jim DeStafney is a member of Beatles tribute band Not Quite Fab, and he is invested in supporting local music and bands.

Music Merchants) Top 100 Dealer for five years running. DeStafney staffs the store with an eager group of music enthusiasts who are excited to provide information and advice relating to any of the instruments and accessories they offer.

“We definitely try to promote local music,” said Fugate.

They are currently going through an expansion, which started in April. The new store is eliminating a lot of excess counter space, consolidating the warehouse and offering walk-in service for instrument repair.

Through various community partnerships like Guitars for Vets, free lessons for the disadvantaged, and a dedication to proving the best products and service, Blues Angel Music is the provider of all the local music you love, providing an infrastructure of appreciation and professionalism that shows through the area’s robust live music scene.

A lot of people think DJing is just plugging in an iPod. What all goes into it?

So much goes into it, but ultimately my goal is to keep the people moving and the drinks flowing. I want to be able to look at the suits and the bachelorettes and the hipsters and see them all having a good time.

Sometimes I play rock, sometimes hip-hop or EDM, and sometimes a mixture of all of the above. I don’t really have a preset playlist. I just go on how I feel.

How did you get started?

I would go to clubs and listen to DJs and wonder to myself, “Hey, if I were DJing, what would I play?” So I went through my back catalog in my mind and sort of made playlists and I’d determine that one song might work better than another.

Do you do any remixing or editing yourself?

I will do some edits on songs that I like. Some songs need to be shortened, or I’ll bring the bridge or climax of a song to the front, so the good part gets played first.

I definitely have DJ-friendly

intros and edits that I can pull out as my secret weapon to get the crowd to respond in a certain way.

What are some trends you see in the industry right now?

You know, it’s funny.

Seville doesn’t hire me to just play the Wobble every 30 minutes. They pay me to stay on top of music and know what the trends are. I’m a curator of music, fashion and pop culture in general.

Right now, I’m seeing a real marriage of hip-hop and EDM. The sounds go together perfectly. It’s really the best of both worlds in a live setting.

Is it more of a science or an art?

Definitely an art. I can give another DJ the same 30 songs and it’ll sound totally different. I can give another producer the same synth and drum patterns, and it’ll be something totally unique. It’s definitely an art. You have to feel the room and the music.

Without the creativity, it just becomes some guy with expensive equipment and some pop songs.

TIM NIELSEN OF DRIVIN AND CRYIN Tell me about your current tour.

We usually do weekend tours because that’s what works well for us.

We just got back from Austin in fact and that was a week-long tour. We tour the country in a 15-passenger van that’s always loaded and ready to go. We’re still touring our latest set

of EPs, so we feature all of our new material, plus all the hits.

Who do you look to for inspiration?

Each other. We have a lot of friends doing stuff we love—people like Elizabeth Cook, Todd Snider, Steve Earle and the whole southern Nashville scene. We just enjoy making music together because it’s fun. It’s tough sometimes too though, because instead of buying records or cassettes or CDs, now people scoop up music for free. It’s super hard for a band like us to feed the family with that business model, so we tour. We go to places

like Texas and as far away as Holland and the UK. We try to make every show unique, so you never know what to expect. You’ll always find some improv jamming going on and we like stretching out the songs.

You were recently entered into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame.

We’re really proud of our Georgia roots. To be put in that institution with bands like REM and the Allman Brothers was a great honor.

What type of atmosphere do you like to create at the show?

We take you on a roller coaster ride. We’ll start with full-on rock n’ roll guitar and punk and hard rock, then halfway through we’ll take it all the way down with folkier country stuff.

We make it quiet then bring it back up again. That’s always been our nature— two different personalities coming at you at the same time.

Why have you moved to the EP model?

Instant gratification syndrome, honestly. Also, for budget reasons, we’re trying to create new music with small budget projects, that way we start getting a return on them by selling them one at a time.

A big green ogre and his donkey friend are invading the Pensacola Little Theatre July 29 through Aug. 21. This show will serve as the both the Treehouse and Mainstage season finale to what has been a stellar year of community theater.

The play, based on the much beloved first Shrek movie, was on Broadway for just one year before fans across the country demanded it tour due to its infectious songs, timely messages, and humor that offers something to laugh at for kids and adults alike. With its fantasy elements and extensive prosthetic makeup, this show was a bit of a challenge for the Pensacola Little Theatre, but thanks to some hard work and imagination, the crew is excited for what they feel will be a blockbuster show.

“It has truly been a labor of love,” said Kathy Holsworth, PLT’s artistic director.

“There are so many levels of giftedness and talent that went into this. It has been two years in the making.”

Over 140 people auditioned for the 35-person cast, which features lovable characters like Fiona and Donkey, as well as more prominently placed minor characters like Pinocchio and the Big Bad Wolf. The show closer, “I’m A Believer,” wonderfully ties up all the elements of both movie and stage in a wholly satisfying way that is sure to have people dancing in the aisles.

It may seem daunting to bring such a wellknown movie to the stage, but Holsworth said that the source material was so wonderful that it’s really quite easy.

“Kids are laughing at the potty humor and adults are laughing at some of the more mature humor,” said Holsworth. “But everyone is touched by the message—that we are all special. You don’t have to be a pretty princess to have value. You can be who you want to be, even if your growing nose betrays you.”

The live show is a truly magical experience, according to Holsworth. It expands on the film and offers a visceral, interactive encounter completely different than the passive experience of watching a movie on the couch. So stay up late, swap manly stories, make some waffles, and head on down to PLT to take in Shrek.

Recently, a movement has been underway that promises to change the way we inhale this staple of barbecues and late-night snacks alike. Arguably pioneered locally by Hopjacks and their famous duck fat fries, the movement is sweeping north, south, east and west into homes and restaurants across this fair land of ours. SUICIDE SQUAD RELEASE DATE: August 5 CAST: Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, Will Smith, Cara Delevinge, Scott Eastwood PETE’S DRAGON RELEASE DATE: August 12 CAST: Bryce Dallas Howard, Robert Redford, Karl Urban, Wes Bentley What I got from the preview: This remake of the oddly mature 70s kids movie finds an orphaned boy, Pete, who is discovered in the woods after six years like a modernday Mowgli. Rightly assuming there’s no way he could survive alone, his newly adoptive parents uncover the secret of Pete’s dragon, a wondrous creature who is as misunderstood and prone to mischief as its human counterpart.

Most notable for: Well-done live-action family movies are unfortunately very much a thing of the past. Comic book adaptations and safe sequels have supplanted what was once a box office staple. I sincerely hope this reinvigorates the genre.

Unqualified critical observation: The trailer lifted my spirit like Pete’s dragon lifted Pete from the danger of this cruel world. Though surely predictable and overly sentimental, there is nothing wrong with sugary sweetness in this world too often overcome with sadness and tragedy. FYI, this is not the same dragon as Puff, which is another option for escaping the earthly confines of this world.

SAUSAGE PARTY RELEASE DATE: August 12 CAST: Seth Rogen, Kristen Wiig, Jonah Hill, Bill Hader, Michael Cera, James Franco What I got from the preview: This misleadingly whimsical trailer begins with the premise that anthropomorphized supermarket food dreams of coming home with us for a blissful existence. We quickly discover, however, that this R-rated comedy is no Toy Story-style animated adventure. Gratuitous violence, raunchy humor, and weirdly anatomical hotdogs come to life as they attempt to escape the hellish fate they’ve been sentenced to.

Most notable for: The countless parents who won’t look at the rating before bringing their six-year-olds to the latest comedy from the makers of Superbad, Knocked Up and This Is the End. Unqualified critical observation: Rumor is the rough footage at SXSW was greeted by hysterical laughter and squeamish reactions alike. Sign me up.

What I got from the preview: One of the best trailers of the year opens with the beginning notes of Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” as a montage of various jailed baddies plays before us. Soon, we realize that a government agency is recruiting imprisoned supervillains to help save the world in exchange for clemency. What follows is gleeful violence, predictable quips, and what looks like the most fun movie of the summer.

Most notable for: It’s been years in the making, and with the recent start of DC’s cinematic universe, the studio finally had the excuse to bring the controversial source material to life. The PG-13 rating

is a little discouraging, though, as most teens would probably find a way to see it even if it were rated R. Unqualified critical observation: The cast has great chemistry, the director has surprising pedigree, and some last-minute reshoots assure me that Warner Bros. learned their lesson from the overly somber and humorless Dawn of Justice. While I often bemoan both comic book universes, this film promises a clever twist on the genre with antiheroes, euphoric savagery, and a killer soundtrack. Move over, Guardians of the Galaxy.

BEN-HUR RELEASE DATE: August 19 CAST: Jack Huston, Nazanin Boniadi, Morgan Freeman What I got from the preview: Almost 60 years ago, one of the most thrilling sequences ever committed to film was released as part of a three-and-a-half hour epic called BenHur. The chariot race in the circus maximus replica arguably defined action set pieces and editing for a generation. The surrounding story, about a Jewish nobleman turned slave who ultimately finds redemption, is a hallmark of classic Hollywood. And now, it’s getting remade with bad special effects, an emaciated running time, and Morgan Freeman.

Most notable for: This has to be one of the most unnecessary remakes of all time, marking the third time this story has been made into a movie. I will give it props for using mostly culturally appropriate actors and actresses, however, with the exception of the titular character.

Unqualified critical observation: Just no. And this isn’t some “wrong generation,” “get off my lawn” brand of old-man self-righteousness. Go watch the 1959 version and ask yourself if any commercial summer release can match it in terms of sheer spectacle and pageantry. Split it up into multiple viewings if the run time intimidates you. Just watch it.

WAR DOGS RELEASE DATE: August 19 CAST: Miles Teller, Bradley Cooper, Jonah Hill, Ana de Armas What I got from the preview: A massage therapist in Miami Beach is recruited by his junior high best friend to make $300 million selling arms in the international market during the Afghani conflict. With a fun flavor, high production values, and a satirical bite, this comedy from the director of the Hangover trilogy feels oddly reminiscent of 2005’s Lord of War. Most notable for: Phillips feels like an odd choice to helm this particular picture, especially since pacing is not exactly his strong suit, but the story is worth telling with this sardonic edge.

Unqualified critical observation: I’m honestly split. On the one hand, it looks entertaining, sharp and funny as anything, especially with Hill. On the other hand, Teller has had as many missteps as hits, as has Cooper, and the movie seems too impressed with itself to deliver any sort of political commentary. I’m holding out hope, though, that this will be an enjoyable Redbox evening in.

Discovery Saturday at Naval Aviation Museum Aug. 20 As part of the National Naval Aviation Museum’s Discovery Saturday series, author Kevin Lacz will discuss his new book The Last Punisher. Lacz is a former SEAL sniper, breacher and combat medic who played and served as SEAL technical advisor to the 2014 film, American Sniper. His book, The Last Punisher, is a bold, no-holds-barred, firstperson account of the war in Iraq. With wry humor and moving testimony, Lacz tells the story of his tour in Iraq with SEAL Team Three, the warrior elite of the Navy. This legendary unit, known as “The Punishers,” included Chris Kyle (American Sniper), Mike Monsoor, Ryan Job, and Marc Lee. These brave men were instrumental in securing the key locations in the pivotal 2006 Battle of Ramadi, told with stunning detail in the pages of The Last Punisher, available for purchase in the Flight Deck Store on Friday, August 19. PMA presents Highlights from the Permanent Collection The Pensacola Museum of Art (PMA) will highlight works from its Permanent Collection, containing primarily 20th and 21st century works of art by international, national, and regionally acclaimed artists on exhibit through September. This collection will feature a wide range of modern and contemporary styles and periods including Cubism, Realism, Pop Art, Non-objective Art, Folk Art, and Illustration. The Museum also owns a fine selection of European and American decorative glass, as well as African art and sculptural works, which will be on display.

There are more than 500 accessioned works with the PMA’s Permanent Collection and the notable artists highlighted within this exhibition include, but are not limited to: Alexander Calder, Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol, Vivian Maier, and Ellsworth Kelly.
