It’s spring and love is in the air. Can you feel it?

Everywhere I look, I see happy couples walking hand in hand, engagement announcements on social media and wedding planning in the works.

It’s a lovely thing, really. In such troubling times, it’s good to know that love marches on. I find it interesting and encouraging that the wedding Kelly Oden trends we are seeing are moving steadily away Executive Editor from the need to impress and more toward the need to express. Modern weddings are focused on the desire to express the couples’ shared passions, values and unique quirks as well as the bond they have with one another and with their families and friends. All as it should be in my humble opinion.

This year, our gorgeous cover winners do just that. Mary and Jae Won Kim met in high school and after a four-year long distance relationship, Jae Won, a pilot, popped the question while taking Mary up for a flight. Actually, since Mary was flying the plane at the time, I guess she took him for a flight! That’s a brave place to ask such an emotionally charged question! It all worked out, though, and the two were married at Old Christ Church in downtown Pensacola. We loved the joy and celebratory nature of the entire wedding party that was captured in our cover photo. We hope you do, too. Congratulations, Mary and Jae Won! Thank you to all of the beautiful couples who submitted this year, as well. We loved seeing all of your stunning images!

Weddings 2022 COVER CONTEST WINNER Mary + Jae Won Kim

We met at Pensacola High School during junior year. We had five classes together and quickly became best friends. Our relationship grew from there! After four years of a long distance relationship during college (two of those years were spent on different continents since Jae Won served in the military in South Korea), we were ready to start our lives together.

We got engaged in 2019. Jae Won is a pilot and one day he took me flying and popped the question while we were in the air. I was the one flying the plane at the time and I was very surprised.

Luckily, I didn’t make us crash! It was a very special moment. Afterwards, he surprised me by taking me to my aunt’s house where our family and friends were waiting to celebrate with us!

We got married at Old Christ Church and had our reception at Heritage Hall. We knew we wanted to get married downtown since we had spent so much time there together over the years. We got married in November and chose a color palette with a variety of fall tones. The bridesmaids wore silk and velvet dresses, the groomsmen wore silk ties, and we had gold accents at the reception. We decorated the tables with vintage cut glass pieces that were thrifted and filled with water, candles or flower stems.

One of our favorite aspects of our wedding was the rehearsal dinner. We wanted to do something special to celebrate the merging of both of our families and cultures. We had a Korean barbecue in my parent’s backyard. Jae Won’s mom made tteokguk (korean rice cake soup) and my cousin Campbell, who is a chef at Kohn’s downtown, prepped the rest (including

some of his famous ginger salad and an amazing spread of pork belly, bulgogi and fresh vegetables for grilling). It meant so much to both of us to have that meal with our friends and families.

It is a memory we will cherish forever!

We are so thankful for everything our family and friends did to help us have the wedding of our dreams. They spent a lot of time gathering decorations, coordinating vendors and helping us in a variety of ways on the day of. More than anything, we will remember the ways people showed up for us in the season of our wedding and made us feel loved.

RUNNERS UP Claudia + Brian Morris I am the Director of Volunteers for Fiesta Pensacola, and Brian is one of our biggest volunteers.

When I first started working at Fiesta in early 2018, Brian was always around the office and at every event. He was always so sweet and hardworking, but a little quiet. I had to really work to get his attention. When the Tall Ships Festival came to Pensacola, Fiesta was in charge of all volunteers.

Brian and I worked together all weekend, and then after that, it was history—we were inseparable.

Our engagement was just magical.

Brian and my cousins planned this gorgeous engagement set-up in our backyard with flowers, candles, and Elton John (my favorite artist) crooning in the background.

Brian and I live in East Pensacola Heights and have a beautiful view of Bayou Texar from our back porch. It was the perfect setting

Ruthie + Zachary Noel Zach always knew that he was going to propose to Ruthie in a field of sunflowers (her favorite!), so he was able to coordinate with their close friends to take “Christmas Card Photos” at Holland Farms one fall afternoon.

Zach completely surprised Ruthie when he dropped to one knee and popped the question.

Fast forward to May 2021, the Noels spent a beautiful wedding week at Coldwater Gardens in Milton, Florida. Glamping and relaxing with friends and family at the venue felt like a destination wedding without going too far from home. Their favorite aspect of their wedding was bringing along their beloved Golden Retriever, Daisy May, so she could participate in

We tried to eat but we were both too giddy—all I wanted to do was tell my friends and family. Brian said he had another surprise, so we hopped on his mother’s golf cart (she lives right behind our house) and went to the Bayou in front of her house. Brian had another setup down by the water, with champagne and both of our families. We celebrated together all night long and had a blast! He proposed with a vintage sapphire ring that still makes me swoon.

Brian and I planned our wedding weekend a little different than a traditional wedding. We both have large families, so we wanted to make sure everyone was included and felt the love during our special day. To do this, we decided to split up our wedding weekend.

On Saturday, September 4th we had our wedding ceremony and a luncheon after. The next day, September 5th, was our reception and we included all of our friends and family. We decided to have a

the celebration. Daisy stole the hearts of all as she walked Ruthie down the aisle during the ceremony and plopped down in the middle of the dance floor from exhaustion during the reception.

They waited almost a full year to take a honeymoon due to COVID-19. In March 2022, they spent three nights each in London, Paris and Amsterdam, enjoying the sights and eating their way through Europe.

Delaying the honeymoon made it even more fun to plan and look forward to. And they were also able to treat this vacation as a babymoon! The Noels are expecting a baby girl in July 2022! Knowing that a new addition to the family is right around the corner, made it even sweeter to relive the moments of their wedding day while traveling.

Then we went to The District for an intimate luncheon, drinks, cake and a celebration that lasted into the evening. This day was so special to us because we were able to slow down and enjoy the moment without the stress of a strict timeline. The time we spent with our family is our most treasured wedding weekend memories. The reception day was all about FUN, the food and the beverages! We had our reception at Seville Quarter, and it was beyond amazing. We were able to use the whole complex, so we had a band, food stations throughout, flowers everywhere and all of our people! It was an incredible weekend full of nothing but love.

CLAUDIA AND BRIAN’S LOCAL WEDDING VENDORS My beautiful Godmother, Molly Maloney, was my wedding extraordinaire. I gave very minimal instruction, and she was able to execute every vision I had to absolute perfection.

Some words of advice from the Noels to newly engaged couples: “The perfect wedding” is just a matter of opinion. Do the things that bring you joy and leave things out if they aren’t personally important to you. You get to write your own fairytale.

If it’s within your budget, hire a coordinator, at least for the day-of. It is worth every penny to have someone besides the bride, or a bridal party member, know all the plans and details so the happy couple and family can enjoy the day.

Take a timeout together on your big day to step back and soak it all in. We found protected moments to breathe, pray together and eat some of the delicious food our caterers worked so hard to prepare.

Wedding Stationery Trends for 2022

Wedding stationery holds the key to making a great first impression with guests. After the engagement photos get posted to social media, friends and family anxiously await the arrival of their personalized wedding invitation.

The “Save the Date” will find its forever home on loved ones’ fridges and serve as an everlasting reminder of an epic celebration of romance. Place cards with delicate typography set the tone for the reception to come and complement the centerpieces that have been painstakingly assembled to perfection. At each step of the wedding guest’s experience, stationery is there to guide the way.

An integral part of the wedding planning process, stationery functions as a roadmap for guests to follow, both in a literal and metaphorical sense. The invitations and signage contain important messages about the “who, what, where” while the place cards and “Save the Date” notices signal the overall aesthetic and vibe of the event.

Though each style of stationery is as unique as each couple’s love story, some common threads have popped up within both the national and local wedding scenes.

Stationery artists and designers from Pensacola weighed in on some of the most popular trends for the 2022 wedding season.

NATURAL INFLUENCES Local printmaker Caitlyn Cooney is the owner of Charlotte Mason Print Co., a local company that uses the letterpress printmaking method to create their products.

Cooney has seen an influx of natural influences on her clients’ stationery requests. “Wedding stationery trends generally follow the same trends as floral and fashion,” Cooney said. “In the last year or so, I have seen a big demand for a more ‘natural’ vibe—think earth tones and textures more than bright colors— romantic and relaxed fonts, handmade paper and understated floral elements,” she added.

A stationery collection designed by Scripted Calling ARTIST-DRIVEN AESTHETICS Local clients are seeking to incorporate their favorite artists’ unique styles into their dream wedding designs. Charlotte Mason Print Co.’s letterpress method is unique to the brand, as historical printmaking shops can be a bit of a rare commodity these days.

Clients of Cooney’s are seeking out her specific artistic style when they contact her for stationery requests. “We are fortunate because letterpress has its own ‘style.’

We use heavy cotton paper, custom mixed inks, and curate every detail down to the stamp,” she explained. Coupled with handdrawn designs, Charlotte Mason Print Co.’s distinctive style attracts clients who are already fans of the soft, industrial influences.

Melissa Callaway, the owner of Scripted Calling, is a modern calligrapher in Pensacola, and well known for her delicate hand-lettering style. Though Callaway is versatile in her talents and lettering styles, many of her clients bring samples of her previous works as a starting point for their consultation. “I’m pretty open to whatever it is that the couple is looking for, and if they reach out to me, I think that they’re trusting my creative vision,” Callaway said.

BRIGHTER, BOLDER COLORS Callaway has seen a recent uptick in bold colors for wedding invitations in the 2022 season. “Green is always a big one, especially for lush, tropical themes, which are coming up for the summer,” she explained.

Deep teal colors, and vivacious pinks have also been trending with Scripted Calling’s clientele. Gold remains a popular color for lettering on Callaway’s orders.

CLASSIC PAPER DESIGNS Though many couples are seeking out bold and unique designs, there is still a great demand for classic stationery styles. Callaway continues to see invitations and place cards on specialty paper with embossed lettering.

Emily Caudle, the owner of Call a Graphic Artist, has seen a major increase in brides looking for traditional invitation styles. As many brides have opted for more intimate gatherings in the past two years, Caudle’s clients have gravitated towards traditional, hand-lettered calligraphy on the invitation envelopes. “She wants them to be kind of a keepsake,” Caudle added, referring to the bride’s vision for personalized envelopes.

CLEAN, MODERN LINES Both Callaway and Caudle have worked with many brides who are looking for clean and modern styles for their wedding stationery designs. Callaway notes that modern styles and shapes have been another highlyrequested design element. She also observed that brides

have leaned towards “not so much wording or verbiage being included on invitations.” They really just want “very clean text lining and layouts,” she added. Scripted Calling is perhaps best known for its signage work in weddings, where Callaway’s signature modern calligraphy style can be seen delicately adorning acrylic cutouts and cake toppers with sleek, modern lines.

Interactive Eats In addition to standard catering, consider providing your guests with an interactive dining experience. Quirky, nontraditional wedding foods are all the rage these days. One of the most popular non traditional food options that many couples are opting for this year is food trucks. offering Tex-Mex. You’re likely to have seen some of these food trucks at various events around the city. Tap the Coast also offers an innovative mobile beverage service. It’s essentially a food truck equipped with taps along with a full bar and beverage station.

Their setup is housed out of a trendy vintage camper that’s been remodeled for special events and weddings. Tap the Coast offers just about any drink one could think of from beer, wine, champagne and cocktails to coffee and a variety of other non-alcoholic drinks.

For those looking for something smaller than a food truck that still provides a unique dining experience for your guests, consider a food station or food

bar setup. This popular trend is built off of the idea of a salad bar – guests start with a plain base food and dress it up with the toppings of their choice. The Fish House, located in downtown Pensacola, also owns and operates an off-site event and catering company called Great Southern Events, which provides complete event planning and catering services for weddings. Although 2020 and the first half of 2021 were all about small weddings and social distancing, this year’s weekend-long wedding festivities and over-the-top soirees are expected to make a return, and in a big way. While the pandemic delayed many weddings and forced couples to change their plans last minute, things are looking up for 2022 and that means you can stride ahead with purchasing that dream dress and have the confidence that you’ll actually get to show it off.

REGENCY-ERA SLEEVES BISHOP & PUFF SLEEVES

Forget what you think you know about wedding dresses with puff sleeves. Regency-era puff sleeves continue to reign supreme within bridal fashion for 2022. Sleeves are big this season, as well, and as we all know, everything old eventually becomes new again. Today, brides are incorporating more sophisticated, modern-day versions of puff sleeves that are all about fashion-forward flair. Enter the Bishop sleeve. A staple of the 80s wedding gown turned modern romance novel chic via the popular Netflix series, Bridgerton. While Welter explained that she typically sees most brides looking for traditional lace sleeves, this year the bishop sleeve has been all the rage.“They are much fuller and have kind of a fun, bell bottom feel,” Crystal Welter, Store Manager of Simply Elegant Couture Bridal said. The puffy bishop sleeve can be worn short and stiff or long and flowing. Nationally, versatile styles of sleeves are being added to a wide variety of dress silhouettes.

HIGH COLOR

PASTELS, STATEMENT SOLIDS & TWO-TONED When it comes to color, it seems that nothing is off limits. Bridal consultants across the country are seeing brides break tradition and embrace individuality by introducing bold solids, splashes of color and pastels into their bridal look. According to Bridal Suite consultants Madison Setliff and Katie Skinner, local brides are also embracing the high-color trend by incorporating pops of color into their dress designs. Setliff and Skinner also said that they’ve seen two-toned dresses become a very popular trend for this year.

“Brides are starting to enjoy these bright colors and are selecting them because they enhance their skin tones,” Welter explained.

Blush used to be a go-to, followed by shades of ginger and champagne, but this year, bridal consultants are also seeing cooler shades of pistachio, dove, pastel yellows, lavender and sky blue in the mix. For brides who want the more traditional feel of a white dress, Welter says, “Ivory is the new white. While it is still rare, we do have some brides asking for dresses trimmed in black. They want to be distinct while also showing off their own unique taste.” Looking for another alternative to bridal white? A subtler choice for the traditional bride with a rebellious streak lies in nudes and antique shades. This year, brides are embracing hints of bronze, peach and beige tones. These soft tones are here to stay for a feminine yet cool take on aisle-appropriate color.

From full voluminous skirts to ruffled hemlines and tiered tulle, this cascading style is quintessential for those who want to feel like the belle of their ball. “Lace is timeless, and this is a trend that never goes out of style,” Skinner and Setliff explained. “The styles of lace may vary as seasons come and go, but one thing that’s certain, is that brides will always be on the hunt for a perfect lace gown.” Welter sees the lace trend evolving into something a bit different than the traditional delicate lace of days gone by.

“Some of the trends are going away from the doily-looking lace to big modern flowers with larger appliques,” Welter explained.

From rehearsal dinners and bachelorette parties to the reception on the big day, the charcuterie and grazing board trend is spreading fast– and many couples are choosing to incorporate these colorful spreads of assorted delicacies into their weddings festivities.

The charcuterie trend has greatly evolved in the last few years, making it easy to lump both charcuterie and grazing boards into the same category. The art of charcuterie came about when delicatessen owners would use every bit of meat by putting it through the curing process to reduce waste and to safely prepare the pork they weren’t allowed to serve raw.

“Instead of tossing out meat, they salt-cured it to last for a really long time,” Sue Shattuck, owner of On Board Charcuterie Delivery Service, said. “Then they had the milk from their goats and cows, so they added cheese and made their own jams and chutneys–and always a nice crusty bread.”

Today, charcuterie has evolved to include everything from dessert tables and fruit boxes to brunch boards. As the boards deviate from the regular meat and cheese, they begin to lean more towards what is known as a grazing board rather than a traditional French-style charcuterie board.

Grazing boards typically contain a wider variety of food types such as cheeses, meats, nuts, fruits, crackers and other light bites. This more plentiful variety provides wedding guests with more options than the traditional meats and cheeses you typically find with the French-style charcuterie.

A grazing board’s focus is more on the selections of foods collectively put together, whereas a charcuterie board is assembled to curate many different flavor profiles that perfectly contrast each other with every bite.

From large-scale charcuterie spreads featuring perfectlylayered assortments of gourmet fares to hearty grazing boards with all of the fixings, charcuterie and grazing boards provide an elegant twist to traditional wedding catering. TRUE CHARCUTERIE WITH A SIGNATURE TOUCH Sue Shattuck wanted to take her culinary career in a new direction… by creating charcuterie boards. “I have been a personal chef and culinary instructor for 20 years. As much as I love that, at some point I had to parlay my passion into something that is a little less physically taxing, and charcuterie boards were the perfect solution,” Shattuck explained.

Even throughout the pandemic, Shattuck was able to continue to build her business. “When the pandemic hit, and people were sequestered to their homes, I wondered if charcuterie delivery to their houses would work, or if there would be a market for that.” Shattuck said.

To Shattuck’s surprise, there was quite the demand—so

much so that her orders became overwhelming.

Shattuck soon realized that her business had the opportunity to grow and that she needed to find a storefront to continue with her venture.

Shattuck has since settled into her own kiosk at The Garden at Palafox + Main in downtown Pensacola and is excited to share her Frenchinspired charcuterie boards with the community from her new storefront. As for her charcuterie services, Shattuck continues to stay true to the French history of charcuterie while incorporating some of her own personal touches for parties and weddings along the way.

“I am old school. I really believe in true authentic charcuterie—charcuterie literally means ‘meats.’ I try to keep our boards very 1400s French authentic, but it’s not about the meat and cheese anymore. There are a lot of fruits, vegetables and

bread being incorporated now,” Shattuck explained Shattuck prides herself on the beauty and creativity that make her charcuterie boards and tables so eye-catching.

“The aesthetic part of it is just so beautiful. You bring all of these colors and flavor profiles together,” Shattuck said.

With the spring and summer wedding season fastly approaching, Shattuck is excited to work with couples and help bring their charcuterie dreams to life. On Board Charcuterie’s offerings are extremely customizable to each couples’ creative vision and dietary needs. “You have to create a table for everyone no matter who their guests are or what their preferences are,” Shattuck explained.

Shattuck is excited that she can now offer a lasting personal touch to an already special day for her customers.

“The guy that makes my boards for me is now able to make boards for weddings.

One side will have the couple’s names burned into it and the wedding guests sign their name on the opposite side of the board,” Shattuck said. “So, there is a permanent guest book on their board to have for the rest of their lives.”

A LOVE FOR CREATING AND EVOLVING CHARCUTERIE For Mary Siders, owner of Olive to Nosh, her charcuterie business began as a family affair. Today, she puts her craft for charcuterie to work for families and couples on one of the most special days of their lives.

“It started when I made a board for my family that came over in 2019. From there, it expanded,” Siders explained.

“I started creating boards on the side and it picked up from there. The demand for my boards got crazy, so I officially made it a business.”

Siders officially launched her business in Pensacola in 2020 as a catering service for all types of events, both big and small. Today, she continues to build her business and is taking on more orders for weddings than ever before due to so many couples having postponed their wedding plans over the past two years as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Siders approaches her work with creativity and enjoys adding her own inventive twists. “I think it is all about being creative with it. It isn’t just meat and cheese anymore,” Siders said. “You can put any type of food onto a charcuterie board and I think that is what draws people into it.”

Then we build the scape of the table so it is aesthetically fitting to their wedding,” Coates said.

GRAZING TAILORED TO THE INDIVIDUAL Melissa Coates, owner of Boarders, created her company in the midst of the pandemic.

“I went out on a limb of faith, trusted God, and started the business in 2020, which was scary,” Coates said.

Boarders is now open and thriving Pensacola. The company specializes in charcuterie and grazing for date nights, lunch boxes and weddings. Coates is continuing her work in the wedding industry, but now through a brand new outlet.

“I’ve always made adult Lunchable trays for my girlfriends– I have done that for years,” Coates said. “Boarders launched in October of 2020, and we have gone full force since then doing everything from date night boxes to weddings.”

Coates gains her creativity and inspiration by talking to people and getting an idea of the direction they want to take with their charcuterie spread.

She enjoys the brainstorming process and the ability to try new things, especially getting inventive with couples.

“Something we have been doing a lot of for weddings is a late-night snack box,” Coates said. “We use little individual cones or cups in to-go boxes because I have been seeing that brides want a little something for their guests to snack on.”

Coates looks forward to continuing through the wedding season and working on reaching her goal of hosting charcuterie classes this April.

A Contract of Love Why Every Smart Couple Should Consider A Prenuptial Agreement

In Pensacola, we know that the cold weather is about to give way to a glorious panhandle spring and that means that wedding season is just around the corner. Ladies who are well loved by the right person become more beautiful every day and the men who are in love become more confident.

If you have ever witnessed a couple become engaged, the nervous posture of the groomto-be and the excitement of the bride-to-be cannot help to elicit a feeling of hope in the observer. Yes, Shakespeare was right; the sight of lovers is like seed for lovebirds.

Ahh and a bride-to-be, constantly looking down at her hand admiring the way her ring catches the light, flipping through magazines at dresses and decorations and putting in place the wedding she has had planned in her mind since she was a little girl—the cake, the dress and the party!

And just as the fun of the wedding planning is being undertaken, someone dares to ask, “Are you getting a prenuptial?” Gasp! Who would cast this shadow of doubt on a newly engaged couple?

Yes, over the years the word “pre-nup” has become a

dirty word for hopeful and committed brides and grooms.

It is understandable of course, as who wants to enter a marriage with the expectation of it failing; why plan for the end of your marriage when you have just committed to undertake this life in a permanent partnership?

But what if the discussion about a prenuptial did just the opposite? What if it solidified your commitment instead of polarized it?

Prenuptial agreements have been around for centuries.

In the Jewish faith, the bride and groom not only make an emotional and spiritual commitment to one another through marriage, but also make a legal commitment through the use of a ketubah.

In a ketubah, the mutual responsibilities of the parties are outlined for the couple both during the marriage and if necessary upon their divorce. The true historic goal of the first prenuptial agreements therefore was not just for divorce planning, but also for marriage planning.

Over the years, society’s view of prenuptial agreements has deviated from this idea. It’s no wonder when celebrity breakups and the extreme terms of their prenuptial agreements highlight nothing but their selfish motives and greed. But the reality of a well thought out prenuptial is the exact opposite and has less

to do with protecting your “stuff ” from the other person and more about writing your own plan for your future as husband and wife.

■ SMART COUPLES KNOW

THAT THEIR MARRIAGE WILL END. Smart couples know that even though they do not intend, and do not want, to ever dissolve their marriage, the possibility of dissolution is a reality. The current national divorce average is somewhere around 40 percent, down from recent years where it topped 50 percent. However, with the recent stressors of a global pandemic, inflation, war and other struggles, it is very likely that the divorce rate will increase as the stress of these events often hit the hardest on marriages. While every newly engaged couple is hoping and expecting to beat those odds, smart brides and grooms do not ignore the possibility of dissolution. Aside from the possibility of divorce, smart brides and grooms know with certainty that if divorce doesn’t end their marriage, death will.

Prenuptials not only help outline terms for divorce, but also establish terms for inheritance and estate planning. When a person dies, Florida law provides for how that person’s property is transferred. Similarly, if a couple divorces, the law will dictate the terms of that divorce. In instances, a statute or a judge interpreting the facts to the relevant law can ultimately make very personal decisions for families. A prenuptial is a contract that sets forth some minimum terms in both and smart brides and grooms use a prenuptial to decide that when the marriage ends, due to either death or dissolution that their lives will be governed by the terms of their own agreement, rather than by any terms dictated by a statute or a judge. Remember, a prenuptial agreement does not prevent you from

giving more to your spouse or even sharing everything in the event of your death.

■ SMART COUPLES KNOW

THEY HAVE TO TALK ABOUT THE HARD STUFF. Ask any couple who has been married for a long time what their secret of success is and they will likely tell you “communication.” In fact, the pastors, licensed mental health counselors and countless other people involved in helping struggling marriages that I work with on a regular basis, will tell you that couples are headed for divorce when they can no longer communicate.

A prenuptial agreement forces a couple to have conversations about difficult subjects like finances, death and honesty before they take the leap. Smart brides and grooms believe that by openly discussing these matters, they are solidifying their commitment and love for each other and setting a pattern of open communication that will stay with them for the duration of their relationship and married lives. This is accomplished in several ways as the prenuptial is negotiated. Enforceable prenuptial agreements often require full financial disclosure of each party’s assets and liability and forces the parties to think about their positions on legal issues like alimony, marital assets and debt and inheritance. A good prenuptial agreement also helps the couple outline how finances will be handled during the marriage and can address financial issues like separate bank accounts and individual earnings.

■ SMART COUPLES WANT

But, when you think about it, it is probably the only contract that you enter into without understanding what those rights and responsibilities really are.

Few couples know if they will have to pay alimony or not if they divorce, whether or not keeping the title of a property in the name of only one party will determine who it will belong to after divorce, or how assets and debt would be divided in the event of a divorce. The first time most couples learn about the rules of the game is after someone has filed for divorce or one party has died. Then it can be too late. A prenuptial helps a couple understand what the law says about marriage, divorce and death and helps them decide at the outset, whether or not they agree with the laws. The prenuptial can then override the current law in many instances and create the “law of the marriage” for this couple.

Don’t believe in alimony? You can waive your entitlement to it via your prenuptial.

Believe that forgoing a career to stay at home with children should be financially compensated for? Contract for that compensation.

Want to require that the title controls ownership for all the property acquired during the marriage? Include it in your agreement. A smart bride

■ SMART COUPLES KNOW

THAT PRENUPTIALS ARE NOT JUST FOR THE WEALTHY. As a divorce lawyer, I don’t get the opportunity as often as I would like to facilitate the creation of families. Honestly, when I first started doing prenuptial agreements, I had the impression that they were just for the wealthy, blended families or for couples who really didn’t think they were going to “make it” long term.

However, the more prenuptial agreements I do, the more I realize that they benefit both parties of the marriage, and are not just designed to benefit the wealthy. In today’s economy, it is almost impossible to predict which party of the marriage will ultimately become the breadwinner or stay at home parent. Traditional roles are changing and that means the sky is the limit on who can and may ultimately be the primary earner in a marriage.

A great example of this would be a couple who enters into a prenuptial agreement because the groom’s family is very wealthy and he anticipates gifts of money, investments or businesses from his family over the years of marriage.

Naturally, the groom (or his family) would want to consider a pre-nup and it could be said that the prenuptial was put in place in an effort to protect his assets more than hers. But, years later, that same bride that signed the pre-nup before the

wedding then becomes an Instagram influencer as she hits the social media world talking about being a young mom or creating a lifestyle brand of her own. That same pre-nup that was thought to be the protection for the groom in the event of a divorce, now becomes the protection of the bride and the income she worked hard to protect.

So, you see you don’t have to be wealthy to enter into a pre-nup. In fact, life throws so many curveballs at a marriage you have no idea what type of divorce you could be facing.

■ SMART COUPLES

KNOW THAT PEOPLE CAN CHANGE. I hate this reality, but unfortunately, it is the most common reason for divorce that I see in my practice. A once competent, handsome and sober groom becomes addicted to drugs and in the process drives the couple’s finances into the ground. He then looks to his wife to help him stay afloat even after divorce. A pre-nup can prevent that. A wife strays and is unfaithful spending large sums of money on a credit card on her

paramour. The husband can be protected in a pre-nup.

There are so many scenarios in which the person you married has changed so detrimentally that you must divorce. A pre-nuptial can protect the other party and ensure that their future is not dictated by a spouse that changes for the worst.

Here is the bottom line. The more brides and grooms that I represent, the more value I see in the process of creating a prenuptial agreement and making financial decisions together. A recent prenuptial client recently said, “If we can talk about things like whether or not to have a baby, we should be able to talk about the real embarrassing things like my credit card debt.”

As this couple was leaving my office on that day, they executed their prenuptial agreement, they looked at me and the other attorney and informed us that their next stop was the courthouse, to get their marriage license. “Now that we signed this contract of love, let’s make it official.”
