Q A

What are the major threats to koalas? There are many!

One of the biggest threats koalas face is habitat loss.

Most koalas now survive in fragmented and isolated patches of habitat. In Ballina Shire, almost one-third of the koalas live in and around windbreak trees. As their habitat becomes smaller and more fragmented, or the colonies grow, koalas are forced to travel on foot through urbanised and agricultural areas.

Habitat loss is not the only threat, koalas face many other treats including: • Disease (chlamydia) • Roads and vehicle strike • Brushfires that scorch or burn the tree canopy • Predation by wild or domestic dogs • Storms • Drought and heatwaves • Climate change
