NEW LOOK LENNOX HEAD CULTURAL CENTRE UNVEILED Minister for the Arts, The Hon Don Harwin MLC, officially opened the Lennox Head Cultural Centre, marking the completion of the $2.58million project. This project is thanks to the NSW Regional Cultural Fund investment of $1.83million and $750,000 from Ballina Shire Council.

From the outside, the most noticeable change is the newlook turrets that are now covered in zinc, ideal for keeping corrosion at bay. Their appearance will also change over time and develop a blue and green patina finish. Other improvements to the centre include: Theatre and central foyer air-conditioning, providing year-round comfort for patrons A new roof and 80kw solar power system New internal linings to the theatre ceiling, walls and carpet tiles Laser projector and six-metre retractable screen. The freshly renovated centre will be a cultural hub for the Northern Rivers, attracting more live music and performances. With COVID restrictions lifting further, it is great to see activities resuming across the region. However I do urge everyone to do the right thing to limit our risk of being exposed to the virus and the retightening of restrictions. On a positive note, it’s pleasing to see flights from Dubbo and Canberra extended until the end of January 2021. This is a welcome boost for our tourism, travel and hospitality sectors. Our shire has been experiencing strong interest from the film industry, attracted to our beautiful region. Council has recently supported Byron Studios in the use of the Alstonville Cultural Centre to further support the growth of this industry in our shire. It is wonderful to see new opportunities that bring a range of economic and social benefits to us all. I’d like to thank all volunteers across the Ballina Shire, special mention goes to the dedicated volunteers who clean up in and around Lake Ainsworth. Which leads me to the Ballina Shire Australia Day Awards. The Ballina Shire Australia Day Awards program is a perfect way to recognise and promote these efforts. We’ve seen some extraordinary efforts of people helping others, particularly in these challenging times. I believe the new amenities and hot outdoor showers have been a huge hit. Shortly you will also see some works commence on the Wollongbar District Park. The Coastal Shared Path is fast becoming a popular attraction, with the final section now open at Skennars Head. The final leg of the Coastal Recreational Walk from Sharpes Beach to Pat Morton Lookout is also progressing well. Cr David Wright

Next time you’re out enjoying the water, take note, as they are actually very important markers for emergency services. If you need to call 000 while at the beach, quote the number on the yellow sign to the operator. This will give the emergency services the coordinates for your location and may help save a life.

Dredging at Shaws Bay, East Ballina is underway to improve the health of the bay, as well as improve recreational amenities for the community. The $1.49million works are part of Ballina Shire Council’s Coastal Zone Management Plan to ensure the shire’s waterways continue to provide ecological, cultural, recreational and economic benefits. The dredging and processing of material is progressing well and is 50% completed in the current location. Next, the dredge will move towards the training wall. The continuation of the pathway over the saltmarsh basin will commence shortly, and will finish the connection through the reserve to Compton Drive. New shelters, a shower, a water station and an accessible BBQ are operational with accessible picnic seating for all shelters to be installed shortly. Foreshore stabilisation and improvement works are continuing and once completed final embellishments will include additional planting of vegetation, vegetation restoration and rehabilitation works, fencing, grass turfing of reserves and installation of educational signage. The majority of the works are planned for completion by early December 2020. Council is upgrading the walking track to the Killen Falls viewing platform. This upgrade will improve access to the viewing platform and protect the vegetation and natural landscape by better defining the pathway. The walking track, viewing platform, waterfall and Rous Water Walk will be closed until 13 November 2020 (weather permitting).

Live music returns to Lennox Head Cultural Centre Live music has returned to the Lennox Head Cultural Centre for the first time in almost a year. Described as ‘the finest guitar player of his generation’, young virtuoso Daniel Champagne played to a captivated crowd on Saturday 24 October. This event was held in conjunction with Tintenbar Up Front, with proceeds from door sales donated to charities. Patrons can look forward to more live music this month with legendary singer-songwriter Tex Perkins next on the playlist. Tex Perkins and Friends will perform on Saturday 7 November. Tex Perkins’ career has taken in everything from the ground-breaking experimental punktonica of Thug, the hard-edged pub rock of the Beasts of Bourbon, the evocative soundscapes of The Cruel Sea, to the dark country of his material with the Dark Horses. Most recently he has been travelling the country in the hit theatre production The Man in Black, starring as Johnny Cash. This gig is thanks to a NSW Government Great Southern Nights grant. This initiative aims to stimulate the revival of live music, entertainment, hospitality and tourism during recovery phase of COVID-19, with over 1,000 events being held across NSW.

Later this month high-energy country rock band Hurricane Fall will play two shows on Friday 20 November and Saturday 21 November. Hailing from Newcastle, Hurricane Fall’s sound is a modern but earthy fusion of their country roots and the classic rock heritage of the Steel City where they reside. Recent $2.58million enhancements make the Lennox Head Cultural Centre the perfect venue for live performances. “The new interior in the theatre adds a clear and high-end quality sound to these events,” said Council’s Manager Facilities and Services, Craig Brown. “We’re excited that live music is coming back to the centre for the community to enjoy.” Lennox Head Cultural Centre is located at 1 Mackney Lane, Lennox Head. FUTURE ROAD NETWORK Council provides and maintains an extensive road network. We are committed to planning ahead to complete road and traffic upgrades to create an integrated traffic network to support a growing a community.
River Street duplication update Council is continuing to develop plans to duplicate River Street from West Ballina into Ballina Island to address traffic congestion. The detailed design for the first section at West Ballina, Burns Point Ferry Road to Barlows Road is under development, with initial stormwater investigations and soil testing now complete. Council plans to complete this significant road infrastructure project in four sections, with the first section expected to start early 2021. Martin Street and Regatta Avenue upgrade Council is upgrading Martin Street, south of River Street and Regatta Avenue to improve parking and pedestrian safety. The works will cost $580,000 as part of Council’s road renewal program for 2020/21. The reconfiguration of Martin Street will provide additional car spaces, including mobility and motorcycle spaces. Kerb ramps will also be relocated and a pedestrian refuge constructed to improve safety. The riverfront pathway will be extended to a shared path along Regatta Avenue to improve pedestrian access and safety. This will tie in with the introduction of a one-way section at the western end of Regatta Avenue. The works will improve this part of the town centre for motorists and pedestrians. The shared path will extend to connect with the foreshore, and there will be safer crossings where Martin Street meets River Street. The project is expected to be complete by the end of the year (weather permitting). Council apologises for the temporary inconvenience caused by these works.

Fox Street Roundabout The new roundabout construction at the intersection of Fox and Cherry Streets is nearing completion. The temporary traffic redirections have been running smoothly for some weeks with one lane open for South bound traffic only and diversions in place for North bound traffic along Bentinck and Moon Streets. The roundabout will improve motorist safety and is expected to be completed in November 2020 (weather permitting).

Ballina’s shared path network allows pedestrians and cyclists to travel safely between Lennox Head and Ballina. “This is a tremendous recreational asset for the whole region. It will encourage locals and visitors to explore the beautiful Ballina Shire and whether they choose to walk, run, cycle, scooter or skate, they can do so safely all the way from West Ballina to Lennox Head village if they choose to,” said Mayor David Wright. “People enjoy the relaxed lifestyle the Northern Rivers is well known for, with easy access to the coast and hinterland. The Coastal Shared Path connects our communities, provides an easy and safe commute between home and work along pristine coastline and through littoral rainforest. It doesn’t get much better than that,” added Mayor Wright.

Temporary Closure section of Coastal Recreation Walk A section of the Coastal Recreational Walk, south of Boulder Beach carpark, is temporarily closed to pedestrians. The existing path immediately south of Boulder Beach, Skennars Head will be closed for the upgrade of a 200 metre long section including a small boardwalk section as part of the Coastal Recreational Walk project. This section will be closed until the end of November 2020. Pedestrians are advised to avoid this section while construction is underway and access the open sections of the Coastal Recreational Walk south of Sharpes Beach and north of Boulder Beach, and the newly opened Coastal Shared Path network. BALLINA COAST AND HINTERLAND NEWS If you need some inspiration for things to do then connect with the Ballina Visitor Information Centre social channels to enjoy what’s on offer across the region. It could be as simple as knowing what markets are on for the weekend, the latest kids’ entertainment, or comedy festival. The Visitor Services team will share some great local secrets and keep you informed about what’s new, what’s happening and where to be on the weekends!
Look out for koalas Council is urging motorists to slow down on the road and watch out for koalas. Spring is breeding season, which means koalas are actively in search of a mate as well as their favourite food trees. Due to increasing pressure from human activities koalas sometimes travel long distances along dangerous routes, including busy roads or through housing estates, when in search of a new territory. They are at high risk of being struck by a vehicle or attacked by a dog. In the last month several koalas have been treated by Friends of the Koala (FOK) in Ballina Shire and many more across the region. The most recent fatality in our shire occurred when a vehicle travelling along the Bruxner Highway struck a young, healthy male koala. It was some hours before a Koala Officer spotted the motionless koala on the road verge and reported it to the Friends of the Koala hotline.

As part of the Saving our Species Iconic Koala Project, Ballina Shire Council is working with Northern Rivers Councils, Friends of the Koala, and universities to develop strategies that will support the long-term survival of the species in the Northern Rivers. Council is investigating measures including: Protecting and enhancing koala habitat in areas of highest regional priority Installing ‘koala zones’ and other road strike mitigation measures at priority locations Improving koala rehabilitation outcomes through increased veterinary care.

AIRPORT SAFETY WEEK 19-23 OCTOBER The Ballina Byron Gateway Airport celebrated Airport Safety Week from Monday 19 to Friday 23 October 2020.
Flights to Canberra and Dubbo extended Following a successful trial period, flights from Ballina Byron Gateway Airport to Canberra and Dubbo have been extended until the end of January 2021. Independent airline Fly Pelican launched the route to Canberra in July, making aviation history with the first direct flights between Ballina and the nation’s capital. In August the airline introduced another new route to regional New South Wales, from Dubbo to Ballina. Both flight routes have proved very popular. Passengers can now book flights between Ballina and Canberra through to the extended dates on any of the three weekly flights. Prices remain the same from the initial launch, with seats starting from $229 one way. Since the launch at the end of August, flights between Ballina and Dubbo have been well over 75% occupied in both directions. With the flights now extended to 31 January 2021, tickets between Dubbo City Regional Airport and Ballina Byron Gateway Airport will start from $149 one way.
The Dubbo to Ballina route has been so successful that an extra service has been added. Starting 20 October Fly Pelican began operating a Tuesday service, leaving Dubbo at 8:40am and returning from Ballina at 12:30pm. Ballina Mayor, Cr David Wright, sees a lot of positives in the extension of the flight routes. “COVID-19 has adversely affected our tourism, travel and hospitality sectors. We’re thrilled that local businesses will see visitors from Canberra and Dubbo and add a much-needed boost to the local economy.”

This year’s theme We are in this together was an excellent opportunity to show the travelling public that airports strive to ensure high safety standards. During the week, daily themes allowed airports to focus on a particular safety issue. After the Jetstar 0920 departure on Wednesday 21 October 2020 Ballina Byron Gateway Airport demonstrated a FODWALK to local media.
What is a FODWALK? Where staff take to the tarmac to look for objects which could harm aircraft such as rocks, luggage components, animals and bits of rubber and metal. A FODWALK is part of the daily operations at Ballina Byron Gateway Airport, and Airport Safety Week reinforces the need to be vigilant for objects which can cause damage to aircraft. The airports sector was one of the first hit by the COVID-19 pandemic, but its commitment to safety has never changed. The Airport Safety Week was a perfect opportunity to show the travelling public how we strive to ensure high safety standards right across the airport sector. The safety week campaign was a collaboration between the Australian and New Zealand Airports Associations.

Alstonville Cultural Centre licenced to film

Ballina Shire Council has decided to enter into a one-plus-one-year licence agreement with Byron Studios to occupy the Alstonville Cultural Centre for filming purposes, creating benefits and jobs for the community. Part of the decision is for Council to work closely with the community and Byron Studios to ensure large scale community events can continue at the Centre. There are no changes to the library operations with library services continuing to operate at the Alstonville Cultural Centre. Mayor David Wright outlined how this proposal could help support film and television production within the Ballina Shire. “It’s a start up industry for our region and by working with proponents such as Byron Studios, a sustainable film and television industry could flourish in the Northern Rivers.” “Support for the film industry in Ballina Shire can have social benefits through educational opportunities, and also provide significant economic benefits by generating employment, especially for our youth, and by providing opportunities for local businesses,” said Cr Wright. “Byron Studios has expressed a strong interest in establishing a sound stage and studio complex in the Southern Cross Industrial Estate in Ballina. The occupation of this site is still a couple of years away, so the Alstonville Cultural Centre is an ideal interim venue for Byron Studios, as a short to medium term solution for the film industry to operate from our shire.” William Gammon, founder of Byron Studios, explained that over the past few months,
circumstances have changed in the film industry. Byron Studios have been pursuing opportunities created by the Covid-19 pandemic which has forced television series and movie producers to seek low risk locations in Australia. Byron Studios is close to securing a major production and want to work with and in the Alstonville community to support and engage locals and businesses to provide services that each production needs, such as local trades, electricians, carpenters, painters, wardrobe, caterers, locations services, accommodation etc. “The services and products that the film industry need to function are extensive and we will be looking to our local area first when sourcing services, products and even some talent,” said Mr Gammon. “With the increasing national and international demand and consumption of film and TV content, this is a unique opportunity to be part of an exciting new and fast growing industry and create social and economic benefits by providing new jobs and opportunities, especially for young people,” added Mr Holden, Managing Director of Byron Studios. Once the production is secured, a community information evening is planned to provide further details.

From the outside, the most noticeable change is the new-look turrets that are now covered in zinc. The zinc will be ideal for keeping away corrosion and will last up to 100 years. Their appearance will also change over time. As it ages, the zinc will develop a patina finish and throw blue and green tones. Other improvements to the centre include: Installation of air-conditionin g to the theatre and central foyer, providing year-round comfort for patrons.
