Dear clients, friends, and partners,

It has become our tradition to share with you our annual Ballentine Partners Stakeholder Report, providing insight into the life of the firm and the people dedicated to its purpose. This past year, we celebrated our 40th anniversary, which offered a meaningful opportunity to reflect on how far we have come—and where we see our future.

Our firm began as a bold experiment in values-driven wealth management and has grown into a thriving, independent organization rooted in trust, integrity, and a decidedly human-centered approach. This report provides a view into the people, principles, and progress that continue to guide our journey and the impact we strive to make for our clients, colleagues, and communities.

The report highlights the many ways we have remained committed to A Decidedly Human Approach®, supporting our clients, our team, and the communities we serve with empathy and intention. Whether through pioneering research in family well-being, mentoring the next generation of advisors, or aligning our investments with values that matter, our goal is to create a lasting impact at every point of engagement.

You will also learn about our continued investment in people—from welcoming new colleagues to celebrating longtime team members whose dedication helps define our culture. You will see how we are evolving our services to meet the complex challenges of today’s world while staying firmly grounded in the principles of fiduciary care and independent thinking.

This year, we also deepened our commitment to leadership and innovation. Among the most meaningful developments was the founding of The Ballentine Partners Center for Family Well-being. Built on more than a decade of research, the Center was created to help our clients, and the broader industry reimagine what it means to achieve lasting success across generations. The Center’s work focuses not only on financial capital, but also on fostering emotional, relational, and personal well-being. It stands as a testament to our belief that wealth should serve the human experience—not the other way around.

In parallel, we have strengthened our private investment platform, expanded mentorship initiatives, and promoted new leaders from within the firm, including the appointment of several partners and principals.

As we look to the future, we do so with both humility and conviction. The changing landscape of our industry will require not only financial expertise but also wisdom, compassion, and adaptability. At Ballentine Partners, we are prepared to meet that future and help shape it—guided by the same enduring values that brought us to this moment.

Thank you for your continued trust, partnership, and support. We are honored and grateful to be part of a shared journey.

THE BALLENTINE PARTNERS CENTER FOR FAMILY WELL-BEING

We are pleased to announce that we have established The Ballentine Partners Center for Family WellBeing (“The Center”) to further the understanding of and adoption within the wealth management arena of the counterintuitive lessons that our firm’s 10-year research effort has revealed about how to foster true family success amid multigenerational wealth.

Grounded in the research that brought our “Healthy, Wealthy & Wise” three-book collection to life, The Center is dedicated to enriching lives by prioritizing the human impact of wealth management, emphasizing that true wealth includes personal and family well-being. The Center is founded on the core tenet that financial abundance should harmonize with the values and relationships that matter most in life and that industry best practices are only that when they truly enhance not just wealth preservation, but also family well-being.

Leading The Ballentine Partners Center for Family Well-being are Coventry Edwards-Pitt, CFA, CFP®, Partner & Founder and Director, and Alexys Febonio, Associate Director. The client work related to The Center is supported by our in-house team of fifty trained client advisors.

OVER 25 YEARS OF PRIVATE INVESTMENT EXPERIENCE

For over 25 years, Ballentine Partners has been assisting clients invest in private markets. Led by Partner and Head of Private Investments Elisa Gruber Lustig, our experienced team offers qualified clients access to compelling opportunities alongside accomplished private equity managers across the investment spectrum. Below are insights into some recent investments.

Private Equity Investment in Public Safety Technology

Peregrine, a public safety technology leader named one of Forbes’ Next Billion Dollar Startups in 2024, recently closed a $190M Series C round led by Sequoia Capital, valuing the company at $2.5B. Ballentine Partners participated in a round in late 2024, ahead of Peregrine’s Series C financing via an SPV managed by Fifth Down Capital.

Seeding the Future: Glasswing’s Strong Community and Distinct Edge in AI Sourcing

Glasswing Ventures, a women-owned, Boston-based, early-stage venture capital firm, focuses on investing in pre-seed and seed stage companies developing AI-native software for enterprise and cybersecurity markets. The founding team has been investing in AI together since 2007. Ballentine Partners committed capital to Glasswing Ventures in 2024.

Through its prior funds, in which Ballentine Partners did not participate, Glasswing Ventures invested at the seed stage in Common Sense Machines. Founded by a team emerging from MIT Media Lab, the company has developed an AI-powered platform that generates photorealistic 3D objects and 2D images for virtual environments such as gaming and augmented reality. Glasswing was introduced to the team by its exclusive advisor, a renowned scientist and co-founder of the MIT Media Lab. A leading Silicon Valley firm later backed the investment.

A MORE ENRICHING PATH

Tax Alpha vs. Investment Alpha

For Family Office and High Net Worth investors, the pursuit of traditional investment alpha (outperforming an index through superior stock selection) has been a challenging one for decades for a host of structural and behavioral reasons. Investment alpha has proven to be elusive, expensive, non-persistent, and nearly impossible to identify consistent providers of it in advance. All these statements hold true for pre-tax returns. After-tax returns of active managers are unsurprisingly worse. Tax alpha, in contrast - the outperformance of an index on an after- tax basis through active tax management - appears to be more readily available, less expensive to acquire, and not dependent upon elite or rare skills.

By focusing on after-tax alpha, we align our approach with the realities and needs of Family Office clients. They are uniquely challenged. They currently suffer from a much more onerous tax drag on returns –Federal, State, and Estate – and the future holds little to no reprieve on this front. But the evidence is quite conclusive that traditional approaches have not worked. So, it is time to consider a new path, a path with a robust and proven analytical framework and much higher odds of success. Tax alpha may lack some of the intrigue of finding the world’s next great stock-picker, but we believe it is achievable, sustainable, and in the end, more enriching.

A CULTURE BUILT ON MENTORSHIP

For decades, the founder of Ballentine Partners, Roy Ballentine, has placed an abundance of time, energy, and passion into mentoring junior employees of the company. Roy had many successful, informal mentor-mentee relationships during this time. This format works best for the employees who take the initiative to foster relationships and take advantage of the opportunity.

He empowered a group of his mentees, the now-senior members of our firm, to continue the good work by mentoring the next generation of employees. In our new hybrid work environment, and with many new employees, we are working diligently to establish an organized mentorship program. We will use Roy’s approach as a base for our program in hopes that we can recreate the success that he had.

The objectives of our firm’s mentoring program are as follows:

1. Create an intentional relationship between two Ballentine Partners employees to help with professional and personal development for both mentor and mentee.

2. Enhance employee retention and inclusion by implementing a program that aligns with the underlying values of our culture.

3. Encourage knowledge sharing between employee pairings.

The firm will celebrate its founder and culture of mentorship by granting a colleague the Roy Ballentine Mentorship Award. This annual award will recognize those who have assisted one or more individuals to reach their goals, provided positive guidance to a group, and/or provided mentoring opportunities for others by creating an environment that fosters and encourages such relationships with a positive outcome.

CELEBRATING FOUR DECADES

BALLENTINE PARTNERS: A STORY OF PURPOSE, PEOPLE, AND PROGRESS

At Ballentine Partners, the story begins — as all great ones do — with a moment of clarity. For our CEO, Drew McMorrow, that moment came in the aftermath of 9/11, standing in an evacuated airport parking lot, asking an important question: “What am I doing with my life?” From that reflection emerged a profound realization: success shouldn’t be impersonal. It should be deeply connected — to people, to values, and to purpose.

This realization led to a dramatic career shift, away from traditional consulting and toward something far more meaningful — a place where advice was not just about outcomes, but about relationships. That place was Ballentine Partners.

A Firm Built on Intention and Integrity

Founded by Roy Ballentine in 1984, Ballentine Partners began as a bold experiment: a firm that rejected the conventional financial industry’s obsession with profit maximization and selling products. Our foundation was revolutionary: act as a fiduciary, putting the clients’ needs first — always — and committing to solving every challenge, no matter how complex or unconventional.

Despite our humble beginnings, the mission was powerful — to make a difference in people’s lives. As we’ve grown from a handful of people to an industry-leading wealth management firm with over 130 employees, that mission has remained the heartbeat of everything we do.

A Decidedly Human Approach®

What sets Ballentine Partners apart isn’t just our technical expertise — it’s our philosophy. We understand that financial advising is not a mechanical process; it’s human. Every client is different. Every family is unique. Our role is to guide, to interpret, and to connect.

Our decidedly human approach acknowledges that the most intricate problems we solve are not found on spreadsheets — they lie in the emotional, interpersonal, and aspirational layers of our clients’ lives. Whether it’s navigating family dynamics, preparing for multigenerational transitions, or helping someone articulate a goal for their family, we focus on people first. Services are not just delivered — they are experienced.

Culture: Purposeful, Passionate, and Personal

At Ballentine Partners, culture is more than perks and platitudes. It’s the daily practice of authenticity, collaboration, and balance. Our team isn’t expected to be superhuman — they’re expected to be real.

Many of us are endurance athletes, artists, chefs, parents — and we bring those passions into our work. From running or swimming laps in the early morning to preparing meals for their friends and family on the weekend, our team members embody the kind of balanced life we encourage our clients to live. After all, how can we advise others to live with purpose and joy if we don’t do the same ourselves?

Leadership Rooted in Legacy and Innovation

Our current CEO wasn’t always a firm leader. He started from an entry-level position, driven by a belief in the company’s values. When asked to step into leadership, it wasn’t ambition that led him to say yes — it was conviction. Could a business designed to always put the client first truly succeed in the modern world? The answer has been a resounding yes.

Under his guidance, Ballentine Partners has grown exponentially, not through acquisitions or gimmicks, but through trust, excellence, and a commitment to continuity — reflecting the very families we serve. Our goal is not to disrupt, but to endure. We’re not building a firm to sell it; we’re building a legacy that lasts.

Preparing for Tomorrow, Today

The world is changing — fast. From artificial intelligence to geopolitical uncertainty, the challenges facing our clients are evolving. But our commitment is unwavering: to help families achieve peace of mind and clarity amidst complexity.

We believe the future of advice requires both technical fluency and emotional intelligence. Clients will need someone who not only understands emerging tools but can also be a human advocate in an increasingly digital world. Our advisors will continue to lead with empathy, adaptability, and integrity — just as we always have.

A Tribute to Mentorship and Meaning

We are a firm that believes in mentorship. Every advisor at Ballentine comes up through apprenticeship — learning not just the numbers, but the nuance.

“You might think this is all about money. But it’s really just about relationships.”

– Roy Ballentine

That’s the essence of Ballentine Partners.

A place where the work matters because people matter.

Where trust is built step-by-step.

Where process and passion go hand-in-hand.

And where being human isn’t a liability — it’s our greatest asset.

COMMEMORATING OUR FOUNDING THROUGH FILM

At Ballentine Partners, we believe that important milestones deserve to be celebrated in a meaningful way. When the idea of creating a video to commemorate our 40th anniversary took shape, it quickly transformed into a full-fledged production, resulting in a film that captures the essence of who we are.

Watch the film here.

Illustration by John Turner, Flannel, Inc.

Inspired by our rich history and guided by the talented team at Flannel, Inc., led by Creative Director John Turner, we embarked on a journey to tell our story authentically. The film intricately weaves together the origin and history of Ballentine Partners, featuring our founder Roy Ballentine’s insights along with rich documentation that pays homage to our roots. It highlights our core values, articulating the culture that has defined us for the past four decades and will continue to shape our future. Through heartfelt interviews with our team, we aimed to go beyond the conventional “talking heads” corporate video format, capturing the genuine spirit of our employees both in and out of the office. The addition of the “human approach b-roll” allows us to present a well-rounded view of our team, appealing to prospective clients and future employees alike.

Part 1: The Hypothesis

Roy Ballentine shares the vision that led to the founding of what is now Ballentine Partners. When it came to family wealth advice that was both integrated and independent, he couldn’t find what he was looking for, so he built it.

Part 2: Do the Right Thing

Dives into our firm’s culture rooted in independence, authenticity, meaningful connections with our colleagues, and service to our clients.

Part 3: A Decidedly Human Approach®

Delves into our approach to managing wealth. Ballentine Partners is committed to the success of both our clients’ financial outcome and their human outcome. We believe that wealth management isn’t just about numbers—it’s about fostering meaningful relationships and empowering individuals to thrive.

SUPPORTING GROWTH AND CULTURE: A HUMAN RESOURCES

PERSPECTIVE ON 40 YEARS AT BALLENTINE PARTNERS

Historical Context and Beginnings

Ballentine Partners began its journey in 1984 in a highly personal setting—Roy Ballentine’s home in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire. From the outset, our staffing reflected this close-knit, client-focused ethos. The core team in those early days was small but mighty, concentrating on wealth planning, new business development, and consulting roles to provide personalized support to our clients.

Administrative support was essential from the beginning, and as the firm evolved, so did our operational needs. Later, IT support became a critical piece, and we expanded further into investing, enhancing our services through operational efficiencies and embracing technology.

Our physical spaces mirrored our growth. From Roy’s home, we moved to Mill Street, Wolfeboro, in 1999, our first formal office space. Each office location— our Headquarters in Waltham, MA, our expansion to Palm Beach Gardens, FL, an upgraded space in downtown Wolfeboro, NH, and our Rochester, NH office—marked tangible steps in our journey. Today, our offices serve not just as workplaces, but as homes for our culture.

Milestones in Employee Growth

Key milestones in our staffing story reflect both intentional growth and organic scaling driven by our success and the evolving needs of our clients.

In the early 2000s, Drew McMorrow, Kyle Schaffer, Jayson DeAngelis, Barry Tubman, Coventry Edwards-Pitt, Adam Ochlis, and Will Tickle joined the firm to advise our largest client relationships as well as the strategic direction of the firm’s operations and growth plans.

Soon after, in 2006, the firm employed wealth psychology to better understand and meet our clients’ needs and supported a decade-long research initiative on family well-being led by Coventry “Covie” Edwards-Pitt.

A pivotal moment came in 2011, when Drew was promoted to President, followed by Covie stepping into the Chief Wealth Advisory Officer role in 2012. These leadership shifts signaled our need to scale the business thoughtfully. It was during this time that Brie Elliott, our Head of Human Resources, joined the firm, alongside other strategic hires such as Will Braman as CIO. These additions brought a new dimension of professionalization to our team.

We are proud to have published our first book in 2013. Raised Healthy, Wealthy & Wise, the first of a three-book series that highlights success stories of how individuals have reconciled their financial abundance with the values and relationships that matter most in their lives. Book two, Aged Healthy, Wealthy & Wise (2017), and book three, Engaged Healthy, Wealthy & Wise (2023) completed the collection.

Our growth continued steadily:

2014: Jeff Potter transitioned from Senior Client Advisor to CFO by 2021, succeeding Claudia Shilo.

2015: Chris C. Chandler and Jennifer M. Eaton joined as new Partners of the firm to lead the opening of our Palm Beach Gardens, Florida office, and added to our leadership team with significant experience in investing and wealth advisory services, respectively.

2016: Drew McMorrow became CEO, setting a clear path forward.

2019: Jennifer Christian Murtie joined the firm, eventually succeeding our first Partner, Tom Bullitt, as Head of our High Net Worth Practice, which was launched in 2007.

2020: Ballentine Partners-managed funds were launched under the leadership of Elisa Gruber Lustig, enhancing our private investment offerings.

2021: Jayson DeAngelis was named Chief Development Officer, Barry Tubman as Chief Operating Officer, and Adam Ochlis succeeded Coventry Edwards-Pitt as the firm’s Chief Wealth Advisory Officer.

2023: Christopher C. Chandler and Pete Chiappinelli were named Co-Chief Investment Officers, succeeding Will Braman, CIO, and Bruce Simon, Director of Research.

2023: Completed a corporate rebrand and enhanced marketing focus.

2023: Became a B Corp.

Healthy, Wealthy & Wise Collection

2024: Codified our research with the founding of The Ballentine Partners Center for Family WellBeing, led by Coventry Edwards-Pitt and Alexys Febonio.

2024: Celebrated our 40th anniversary and the retirement of our founder, Roy Ballentine.

2024: Sean Cleary joins the firm as Chief Risk & Compliance Officer

2025: Appointed Jennifer Christian Murtie as Chief Wealth Advisory Officer to succeed Adam Ochlis.

Through these phases, our headcount saw significant growth, crossing thresholds like fifty, then one hundred, and continuing upward. Each surge reflected a mix of sustainable hiring, driven by our rapid success, and strategic hiring, ensuring we brought in the right senior talent as scaling became more complex.

Culture and Workforce Strategy Over Time

Even as we grew, our culture remained steadfast. The values instilled by Roy—integrity, trust, collegiality, and a human approach—have been purposefully protected. We’ve chosen independence over M&A opportunities, allowing us to stay true to who we are and what we represent.

We’ve reinforced this ethos through initiatives like:

• A strong mentorship culture

• Wellness programs supporting both professional and personal well-being

• A robust Leadership Academy to cultivate future leaders

• Regular employee engagement surveys, where we listen actively and take purposeful action. We recognize the power of just listening. When issues arise, we don’t ignore them; we engage, explain, and evolve in ways that serve both our people and our clients.

Capturing the Essence of Our Growth

At the heart of Ballentine Partners is a culture of curiosity, where differences in opinion and perspective are valued, contributing to a productive and engaged team. We’ve built a firm that doesn’t just serve client families, we take care of our employees and their families, too.

Whether facing market volatility or internal challenges, we lead with humanity, ensuring our offices feel like homes and our actions reflect our values. Our growth isn’t just in numbers—it’s in staying true to who we are while embracing the future with integrity and purpose.

WHY BALLENTINE PARTNERS? INSIGHTS FROM RECENT EXPERIENCED HIRES.

“Before going through the interview process, I knew Ballentine Partners was different. Over the years, I have met several employees at events around the city of Boston. It was obvious in every conversation that Ballentine Partners was a great place to work – a place where women thrive in leadership roles, employees are promoted from within, and a culture that makes people want to stay long-term.

Being independently owned and not solely focused on investments, already set Ballentine Partners apart from my previous employers, but on top of that, they take it a step further and provide clients with resources to deal with life’s challenges. Ballentine Partners builds client teams that can tackle financial and family issues. The human approach is real here. It’s real in how we interact with prospective relationships, but also in how we take care of each other and our clients. There is no doubt in my mind that choosing a firm that invests in its people is the right choice, every single time.”

“I joined Ballentine Partners for reasons beyond working with a compelling client base - I joined because I knew I would learn from some of the best and brightest in the industry, in an environment that would allow me to be my full self, and grow meaningfully, both professionally and personally. Ballentine Partners also cares deeply for their clients and seeks to be an extension of their clients’ family ecosystems. These are values that I share and did not want to compromise when choosing an employer.”

FROM SILOS TO SYNERGY: AN INVESTOR FOCUS ON COMMUNITY

Over the past 12 months, the values-aligned investing landscape has experienced notable shifts, influenced by evolving market dynamics, regulatory changes, and heightened scrutiny.

Concurrently, over the same 12 months, values-aligned investing has seen an increasing emphasis on community building and collaboration, particularly among women investors and fund managers. A prominent trend across forums such as the With Intelligence Women’s Venture Capital Summit, Invest for Better, and the Invest in Women Symposium was the cultivation of strong support networks among female investors, including members of our Impact Investing team, who served as panelists at several of these industry forums.

These networks aim to channel capital into underfunded and high-potential sectors, fostering innovation in areas like women’s health, employee ownership transitions, and technologies to alleviate financial burdens for all. Rather than operating in silos, investors and fund managers are embracing a more integrated, community-driven approach—working together to uncover the full spectrum of investment opportunities. This shift has led to a vibrant ecosystem where limited partners (LPs) and general partners (GPs) interact more frequently in person, deepening relationships and driving capital toward impactful ventures and focused on global challenges.

Another critical development has been the rise of underrepresented investors and the corresponding growth of capital being directed into niche and emerging managers. This helps to address systemic gaps where traditional capital sources and funding have receded, uncovering opportunities for investors. Forums like Confluence Philanthropy and Impax Asset Management’s engagements highlight a dual objective: achieving measurable social impact while pursuing long-term returns. Innovative investment themes include employee ownership—an approach that fosters wealth creation among workers. Additionally, values-aligned investors are targeting technological solutions for life transitions, such as affordable divorce platforms, criminal record expungement tools, and estate settlement tracking systems. These ventures reflect a broader trend: using private capital to fill market voids and continuing to commit capital during challenging periods to maintain momentum in impact-driven innovation.
