There’s plenty more to look forward to as we stride headlong into the darker nights and all the festivities this time of year brings.

Last issue I asked the question of what is the best way to improve things for businesses on Main Street and local business champion Lyndsay van der Starre has come back with an answer: use the shops! You can read her round-up of just some of Alford’s gems in the middle pages.

Talking of champions, this issue we also hear from the group that in just a few weeks has pulled together a new club to utilise the new Climbing Wall facility in the community campus.

GP Surgery Back to Full Strength

Alford is well-serviced for GPs again after two posts at Alford Medical Practice were filled over the summer.

Dr Jennifer MacDonald and Dr Naomi Dow both started work at the surgery in August, following a period of reduced cover caused by a series of recent GP departures.

There’s a new musical group in the village. The Ukelele Group meets every Thursday at 7.30pm in the upstairs lounge of Alford Golf Club.

No experience is necessary, all are welcome for a bit of musical fun. For more information check the Alford Ukulele Group Facebook page or just turn up.

Scottish Wildcat Action will be among a number of groups fundraising at the Donside Camera Club Christmas Fair.

The event takes place at Alford Public Hall on November 19th, 10am-2pm.

SWA will host a raffle for a homemade quilt and a tombola and will be joined by the Body Shop, jewellery and homebakes.

Producers’ Market Steps Up a Gear

The next Producers’ Market takes place at Tullynessle Hall Saturday October 29th, 10am til 1pm.

The third event of its type will see lots more stalls. Foodies will be satisfied by a number of contributors including meat, fish, fruit and veg, goat meat, cakes, jams and chutneys, honey (and a hive), bread, clootie dumplings, eggs, cheese and chocolate.

A host of talented crafters will be there too including an upholstery demonstration. There’s even something for the dog.

Throw in a Grand Raffle and delicious teas and home bakes in the cafe area overlooking the beautiful countryside.

Admission is free.

Going to the D.A.W.G.S Charity shop holds special place in village’s heart, says Janine Davies A small charity shop with a big heart has become one of the most popular additions to Main Street and village life in Alford. The shop is run by DAWGS (scio), a North East charity that finds loving new homes for dogs whose owners, perhaps due to illness, frailty or a change in family circumstances, can no longer take care of them. Dogs are accepted from, and rehomed, throughout the North East area – and further afield sometimes.

The charity was set up in 1994 and is now run by a small Board of Trustees. It has its base – The DAWG House – in Aberdeen where its re-homing team is located. The DAWG House is open Tuesday-Friday from 9.30am-1.30pm and the re-homing team deal sensitively with enquiries from those looking for help to re-home their dog and those who can offer a new home. It handles the whole process, carefully matching new families and dogs, doing home checks and follow-up checks to ensure the best possible chance of finding new forever homes for the dogs. While in most cases

dogs remain with their original owners until a new home is found, in emergency situations kenneling may be available.

Thanks to DAWGS over 3,000 dogs have been given a second chance and 3,000 families have enjoyed many happy, wonderful years full of the love, companionship and faithfulness that only a dog can give.

While it costs DAWGS over £300 to re-home every dog – more if kenneling, veterinary care or other services are needed, the charity receives no statutory funding, and relies on its own fundraising efforts, along with support from the local community and local businesses, and of course the shop in Alford, to keep its service going.

Thanks to the dedication of Lynda and Heather, who manage the shop jointly, a fantastic team of volunteers from Alford and the surrounding area and the generosity of the local community, who not only donate a wide range of quality items but are also loyal customers, the

shop is one of the busiest in Alford.

While it is helping DAWGS maintain its caring service, it is also providing a great community facility that both residents and visitors to Alford can enjoy.

The shop, at 44 Main Street, Alford is open 11am-1pm on Mondays and from 10am-4pm Thursday – Saturday. Why not pay a visit, grab a great bargain and support DAWGS at the same time? Donations are always welcome. If you have a few hours a week to spare and would like to volunteer at the shop, please contact one of the managers.

It’s approaching that time of year again, say the organisers of the Alford Charity Ball, this year taking place on Saturday 12th November in Tullynessle Hall.

All are invited to come along and support a great night of food and entertainment.

A terrific meal, music, raffle and auction is all promised for a ticket price of £33.

Catering is by Country Flavours and the music will be provided by Country Edition.

All money raised goes towards local charities in the area and anyone with any suggestions should get in touch with the committee for them to consider.

In 2015 £800 was given towards the Tullynessle Defibrillator machine, which is now stationed outside the Tullynessle Hall door, and a further £1,200 went towards Alford Curling Pond clubhouse fund.

Film lovers are in for a treat as the darker nights draw in after Craigievar Film Club announced its 2016/17 schedule.

The film club is a non-profit-making organisation set up with funding from the UK Film Council and is a member of the British Federation of Film Societies.

It exists to promote a wide range of films including mainstream fare, foreign titles and short/documentary films.

Films are generally shown on alternate Thursday evenings at 7.30pm (doors open at 7pm). You can bring your own bottle/ refreshments, but tea, coffee and biscuits are also available.

Admission is £5 at the door. Annual membership is also available for just £30.

At Books Abroad in Rhynie we collect unwanted educational books and send them to schools, colleges, universities and libraries in developing countries.

Books are donated by schools, colleges, libraries and members of the public. They are sorted at the warehouse, matched to requests, boxed and sent off on pallets in containers. The books are then given a new life where they are most needed.

Our main expenditure is the cost of shipping the books to their new destination. The main income source is through charitable trusts and supplemented by private donations and fundraising events including book sales and coffee mornings.

The office is manned by one part-time administrator, and the rest of the workforce is a group of volunteers who unpack deliveries, sort, select and pack books. If you have an interest in books, education or are a willing pair of hands then Books Abroad is the place for you. The main volunteering days are Mondays and Wednesdays and any offer of help would be appreciated.

climbing the wall Seeing a top-class facility going unused at the new community campus proved too much for climbing enthusiast Gavin Baxter, who decided to do something about it...

We had a positive first meeting, with 16 people attending. After a quick look at the wall, we discussed the various issues which we are facing in getting a kids’ climbing club set up, and how long it would take to get public access (outside a club).

It was felt that there was more than enough interest to justify getting a kids’ climbing club set up now, and to affiliate that club with Mountaineering Scotland.

Support is available from Climb Scotland, and regional development officer Paul Calton attended the meeting, pledging to help in any way he can with the set-up and support of the new club.

At a second meeting we agreed the new constitution, formed a committee and got some more details worked through.

Now we are going to be putting in place the various application forms and other bits of club administration, so that when we ask people to join, we can process their membership application including taking payment for the first block of sessions.

We need adults/parents/guardians who are willing to lend a hand to get this moving. More importantly, we need willing volunteers, who can commit a little time every week, to get the kids on the wall.

We have agreed that the target date for club sessions to start is Wednesday 26th October, but there’s lot of work to do!

A Local Gem! Go For Gold’s Simon Sawers enjoys the last of summer What a brilliant summer for hillwalkers!

And it still continues as I write this in midSeptember. Long days out, stunning views, good exercise, excellent company and a few midgies!

The highlights this summer, during which I have continued to visit numerous Corbetts and Grahams, include a brilliant camping and hiking trip to Knoydart with my partner, a leisurely visit to the Orkney Mainland and the island of Hoy, and supervising Duke of Edinburgh expeditions.

Everywhere there is a profusion of wild berries this year! We all see the bright red rowan berries (cook and eat or make jam after the first frost) and in the hills I’ve never seen so many cloudberries - carpets of them, and so lush! What a delicacy, but you have to be about 600m above sea level to find them, and only in favoured and secret spots! Also magnificent blaeberries and cowberries. You could almost live off the land this summer.

Recently, I was on top of one of our local hills that’s rarely visited but which is relatively easily accessed and provides a stunning panoramic view of the Cairngorms from Devil’s Point through Cairn Toul, Braeriach, Ben Macdui, and Beinn a’ Bhuird all the way round to Lochnagar and Beinn a’ Ghlo.

I’m talking about the Corbett of Sgor Mor and I highly recommend this for hillwalkers, although pick a good weather day! Start at the Linn of Dee carpark and head North on the path, then track in the direction of Derry Lodge. Turn left before the bridge over the Lui Water at grid reference 064914 and head West up steepish heathery slopes. Note

that there are no paths from here on.

Make your way to a broad ridge to the trig point at Sgor Dubh and then West along a magnificent broad ridge of easy walking to the summit of Sgor Mor which is encrusted with granite boulders and small tors one of which has a wind scoured bowl perfect for sitting in while you marvel at the tremendous views. Descend southwestwards to the River Dee at the Chests of Dee and their magnificent pools which are deep enough to dive into and which provide excellent wild swimming.

Return on the estate tracks to Linn of Dee via White Bridge. It’s a great day out.

Although the days are drawing in and the nights getting cooler, there is still plenty of time for lots more hillwalking in summer conditions in our magnificent local hills.

As the days grow shorter, our gardens show the tell-tale signs that autumn is here. Many will think gardening tasks are now over for another year. However, there are still important jobs to be done.

• Tidy borders by digging up annuals.

Consider replanting with winter bedding such as pansies and wallflowers for a colourful display next spring.

• Time to move poorly placed plants and to divide overcrowded perennials while the soil is still warm.

• Lawn looking slightly worse for wear?

Then it’s time to revitalise it. Rake out thatch and moss. Improve aeration by making holes with a garden fork. Brush in a sandy top dressing followed by an application of autumn lawn feed.

• Build a compost bin if you don’t already have one, ready to collect all the waste from the autumn clear up.

• Make sure you lift tender species such as begonias and dahlias before the first frosts threaten.

• Before you store your lawn mower, make sure to clean and oil or send it for a service. Don’t forget to clean and sharpen tools too.
