The Gone Riding Catalogue - Issue 37

In reality the Ballard’s business idea all started back in the 80’s during my racing years in the USA. Luckily, I had met up with a US desert racer Al Baker who had convinced me that it would be a great idea to start a business back in Australia based on the very popular Honda XR’s. Baker had also played a huge part in the development of those bikes and of course knew them inside and out plus the large numbers that been sold back here in OZ.

THE PAST

30 YEARS IN GB'S WORDS

So from a hand shake deal back in 1989 I kicked things off and straight away had felt it was important to produce some sort of informative parts and information brochure, but with business pressures and the new XR race team we’d formed, our first catalogue had to be pushed back to 1990. With more time it had managed to grow even bigger, after jamming in as many new products as we could and turning it more into a catalogue than a simple brochure. Funnily enough that philosophy still runs true today.

Issue 1: For me this XR’s Only catalogue was one of the hardest to produce and believe me it got thrown on the floor or in the bin a number of times but we worked with the local news paper ‘The Mountain Gazette’ back in the cut & paste days and we produced 1000 copies that went out in orders or the post to all the keen Honda XR owners.

Finally it was out there and they loved it!

Issue 9: This issue was huge as it was the very first catalogue we distributed inside a magazine so we basically just put it in the laps of all those readers and added an extra 2500 run-on copies to post out.

Issue 12: This issue mostly celebrated the move to the ‘Ballard’s Offroad’ trading name but also the expansion and move to the Penrith shop.

Issue 14: Roger Harvey was employed to do this. Our first cartoon cover and my favourite of all time. It had a real photo (slightly cartooned in the end) of our OZ champ rider Glenn Kearney railing a drawn rut. We also printed our most run-ons with 3500 and registered the name ‘Gone Riding’ Issue 35: It’s mentioned earlier that Issue #1 was one of the toughest but without doubt this catalogue was the hardest… Merging with MXstore, where everyone really wanted to keep and grow what the catalogue was all about plus adding Australia’s largest range to the mix all the while working on trick bits and moving to the Gold Coast made it pretty crazy!

Issue 4: Things had been going well and we had pressures from suppliers overseas and customers here to supply parts for other bikes, so in 1993 we added the Enduro-X name and expanded the number of lines and pages.

Issue 6: We loved this catalogue because it was our first colour issue and had a thick glossy cover! We’d decided by then to go thicker and stronger in the covers because we’d realised customers were hanging onto them and going through them multiple times as more of a reference tool to what was out and about and trick in the industry, so we didn’t want it falling apart. 2000 were printed.

Issue 20 & 21: Still distributing with magazines but this time we decided to try 2 catalogues in 1 year. So the first in February like traditionally they always are but a 2nd in July. So it was done a few times and is the reason why we are celebrating 30 years but are up to catalogue number 37!

Issue 24: This issue stood out firstly because of it’s unusual sepia finish, but we especially liked it for the fact that it had Stefan Merriman our first world champ (4 times) to join our race team. We now feel extremely proud to have been involved in the early development stages of many champs as you can see on the outside back of this current catalogue.

Issue 36: We realised with the Ballard’s & MXstore partnership that we needed a new catalogue name to celebrate the merge so we decided to start using the name ‘Gone Riding’. With more pages (76!) and more copies printed than ever, means more riding.

The Gone Riding catalogue was born!

When you’ve raced like Geoff Ballard (GB) has, which is continually since 1973 along with 24 of those years running a race team, plus ridden 25 ISDE’s and won a swag of awards, then you could safely say his finger not only was strongly on the pulse but still is! As of this catalogue and at now 60 years old he is the current AORC Masters champ in the Over 45’s class.

Of course with this fully adjustable (1400mm to 1950mm) MotoRak you can secure any combo of 1-2 or 3 bikes into the multiple wheel chock locations. Both sides back set tie down points extension pieces give obvious added strength but also allow the tie down angle to work much better when the handlebars are turned into the corners.

Getting a holeshot is easy right?... Wrong, but most races are won and lost at the drop of the gate, so perfecting your starting technique is key to any MX racer who wants to be on the podium.

Improve your reaction time and learn to control power out of the gate and into the first corner. The “Holeshot” is an electronic, wireless, random timed practice starting gate. This innovative product allows riders to independently practice their starts.

When the rider presses the wireless remote button mounted on their cross bar pad, it will activate a computer controlled timing sequence which will drop the gate randomly. Watch the glowing LED. When it starts blinking it is like 30 second board turning sideways. The gate will drop randomly between 1-5 seconds. Resetting the gate is as easy as riding by and stepping on the backside of the hoop without dismounting.
