LIBRARY OUTREACH SERVICE

The Library Outreach Service will close from Saturday 24 December and will recommence on Tuesday 10 January 2023.

Online services will be available during this time, including the library’s downloadable collection.

Ballarat Library at Town Hall is now open, offering the library services you love right in the heart of town.

Browse the collection, collect holds, access public computers, attend a technology or children’s program and more.

You will find us next to the Visitor Information Centre on the ground floor. Entry is via Bath Lane. Returns can be made during opening hours.

POETRY IN THE PARK

Join us as we meet beneath the trees in the beautiful botanical gardens to listen to Ballarat poet Megan Riedl read a selection of her original poems - and a few of her favourites too.

Megan will be joined by local band The Winter Berries for a delightful afternoon of entertainment for all ages.

REMEMBERING THE NATIONAL APOLOGY DAY IN BALLARAT

On February 13 in 2008, Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, made a formal apology to Australia’s Stolen Generations, those Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who had been removed as children from their families and their culture.

The City of Ballarat is taking a moment to remember the National Apology, and the effect it had on the Stolen Generations.

BALLARAT SQRIBBLERS SUMMER SESSIONS

Ballarat sQribblers is an LGBTQIA+ writers group which aims to be an inclusive space to create regardless of perceived “skills.” Running every three weeks, the group partakes in a variety of writing activities or challenges while embracing everyone with support. There’s no pressure to attend every meeting, and the group loves a surprise guest!

JOIN THE BIG SUMMER READ

The BIG Summer Read helps to sustain your child’s literacy level during the Summer school break with a reading challenge and activities.

Read and log 10 books to complete the challenge and go into the draw to win.

HOW TO PARTICIPATE

The BIG Summer Read is open to children aged 0-18 years of age.

Participants can register and log their reading via the Beanstack website plv.beanstack.org, choosing Ballarat Libraries as your primary library. Alternatively, download the Beanstack Tracker app from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.

Want to participate offline? Paper reading logs are available from in-branch and are eligible for entry into the local prize pool only.

PRIZES TO WIN

State Prizes: Three winners will be drawn randomly from participants across Victoria who complete the challenge on Beanstack only.

Terms and conditions can be found at plv.org.au/projects/big-summerread. The prize pool consists of:

0-8 years: $250 Readings gift voucher 9-12 years: $250 Readings gift voucher 13-18 years: $500 Readings gift voucher

Local Prize: One local winner will be drawn at random from participants who complete the challenge with a paper entry. The winner will receive selected books to the value of $100.00 from Collins Booksellers.

Terms and conditions can be found on the library website. Beanstack entries are not eligible for the local prize draw. Paper entries are not eligible for the state-wide prize draw listed above.

Australia certainly has some very unique, weird and wonderful creatures!

In this one-hour interactive workshop you will be introduced to the amazing world of Australian animals! You might meet a freshwater turtle, python, potoroo, bettong or flying fox.

Learn about where they live, what they eat, what they hunt or who hunts them.
