It’s Quarter Final Day in this most prestigious of domestic tournaments and we are delighted to host Aberystwyth Town for what promises to be another enthralling day at Maes Tegid. Memories of 2017 always flood back when we get involved again in another Cup run and nothing will ever take away the historic achievement of our Club winning this fantastic tournament. It was truly a day to remember and one which we are all striving to replicate as we embark upon the latter stages of the Cup again. Our rivals today have a history steeped in success also with the Welsh Cup and they will be equally as committed to trying to progress further. It will be a match which I’m sure we will enjoy and we look forward to a superb afternoon’s entertainment at Maes Tegid.
I must once again mention our Reserve team. They had a brilliant 5-1 win last Friday evening at Maes Tegid and continue to provide huge entertainment every time they play. Thanks so much to Al Cip for taking over the responsibility for managing the Reserve team and for encouraging so many youngsters to be a big part in the squad. Next Saturday we see the return of Aberystwyth to Bala for the final fixture before the League split. Another hugely important match for both Clubs again. Our recent League form since the return from the Covid break has been excellent with perhaps the only blemish being the 3-3 draw in our last match against Caernarfon. We had kept 3 clean sheets prior to this match but couldn’t hold out against a committed second half performance. However we have once again secured a top 6 spot and are only 2 points off the coveted second place. We have everything to play for as the season progresses at the excitement at Maes Tegid is building as we move towards the business end! Please can I once again thank our superb Match Day Sponsors today. Get to know The Seasiders | Bala Town vs Aberystwyth Town
Club Name: Aberystwyth Town Established: 1884 Home: Park Avenue Nickname: The Seasiders
The Club was founded in 1884, despite reports of an earlier incarnation in the 1870’s, and it was founded by Arthur Hughes who placed an advertisement in the local press in October 1884. The Club had not joined a league until 1896, and were only limited to friendly matches until they joined the Welsh League for a year until reverting back to friendly matches only. However, in 1990 they became the first club from Mid-Wales to lift the Welsh Cup after beating Cefn Druids 3-0. The Seasiders joined the Welsh League (South) in 1951, despite still fielding a team in the MidWales league and the Cambrian Coast league. They would return to the Mid-Wales competition in 1963, and would become runners up six times until winning the league in 1984, and then retained the title the season after! The Club were founding members of the League of Wales in 1992, and achieved 3rd place in their first season. Then in 1998/99 the club qualified to represent Wales in the UEFA Intertoto Cup, but unfortunately lost out to Maltese side Floriana 4-3 over two legs. The success of European Qualification brought positive changes to Park Avenue, with a BBC Studio and a TV gantry, followed by a new stand named the Dias Stand after the former Aber player ‘David ‘Dias’ Williams who holds a club record of 476 goals in 433 games between 1966 and 1983. Their most recent European adventure was short lived as they qualified for the 2014-15 Europa League First Qualifying Round, where they would meet Irish side Derry City. Unfortunately for the Seasiders, a 9-0 aggregate score dumped them out of the Qualifying rounds, after a 4-0 and 5-0 defeat over two legs. Fast forward to the present, Aber currently sit in 9th place in the league table, and are fighting to stay in the division after a up and down season so far. However today, they will compete in the Quarter Final of the JD Welsh Cup as they aim to progress to the Final for the first time since 201718 where they were defeated 4-1 by Connah’s Quay Nomads.
