Get to know The Nomads | Bala Town vs Connah’s Quay Nomads
Club Name: Connah’s Quay Nomads Established: 1946 Home: Deeside Stadium Nickname: The Nomads
The current club were founded in 1946 as Connah’s Quay Juniors, after earlier clubs were disbanded due to various reasons. The club progressed as a senior team in 1948 and joined the Flintshire League, before changing the club’s suffix to ‘Nomads’ and joining the Welsh League (North) before the 1952-53 campaign. In 1990, the Nomads became founding members of the Cymru Alliance and also the League Of Wales in 1992. They would finish 8th in the new national competition in the 1992-93 season, and reached the semi-final of the Welsh Cup, but were denied a Cup Final appearance after a 2-1 defeat to Rhyl. In the 1997-98 season, the Nomads went one better in the Welsh Cup by progressing to the final, but were unfortunate to lose the Final as their opponents Bangor City scored a last minute equaliser and went on to win on penalties. The club would leave their home ground of the ‘Halfway Ground’ in 1998 and would move to their current ground at the nearby Deeside College. The Nomads would narrowly miss out on staying in what was known as the Super 12 League (the current Cymru Premier) in 2010, and would drop down to the Cymru Alliance. They were then denied a domestic license, meaning they were unable to be promoted to the top division, but in 2012 they successfully obtained a domestic license and were promoted to the Welsh Premier League for the 2012-13 season. Most recently, the club enjoyed success under former Manager Andy Morrison who took over from Allan Bickerstaff in 2015. Morrison would instantly turn their season around, with a fourth placed finish in the 2015-16 season, and then went on to win the Europa League Play-Off Final against Airbus UK, securing the club’s first ever European spot. Then in their first ever Europa League tie, they would progress through to the Second Qualifying Round after a 1-0 aggregate score against Norwegian side Stabæk. In that same season, they would record their best ever league finish, finishing 2nd behind the league’s powerhouse in The New Saints. After years of watching The New Saints on top of the table every year, the Nomads would go and win the Cymru Premier title in the 2019-20 season after the season was cut short due to the COVID 19 pandemic, and with the Nomads sitting at the top of the pile when the season was cut short, the FAW made the decision to award the Nomads the title on a points per game system meaning that TNS’ reign at the top had ended. If people thought it was unfair on TNS that the Nomads were awarded the title, they would do it properly the season after as they finished two points ahead of their title rivals taking the title race to the final day.
