Nigel Aykroyd Interview | Bala Town vs The New Saints

I’m not sure where to start with these programme notes after the run of games we have had since the League split and the highs and lows of football. We have won 4 out of the 5 league fixtures with our only defeat coming at the hands of tonight’s opponents and find ourselves 2 points clear in 2nd place. The good run of form culminated in one of the most outstanding performances for many a year in the destruction of Penybont last Saturday. A repeat performance tonight will see us seriously challenging the recently crowned Champions and I am eagerly anticipating to see whether we can match the brilliance of last Saturday. These are extremely exciting times again at Maes Tegid and we have so much to look forward to over the next 3 weeks despite the heartbreak of the Welsh Cup Semi Final loss on penalties. We travel to Flint for another serious test on Friday and then look forward to an epic Good Friday encounter with our closest rivals Newtown. We have invited all school children to come to the Good Friday match free of charge and an accompanying adult will have a concession price of only £4. Please come along for what promises to be a momentous match!

Our Reserves played their last Home match of the season last Saturday and came away with a superb 5.1 win. I must place on record my thanks to Al Cip for his commitment to the Reserves! Without him we would not be able to field a Reserve team and I’m delighted with the progress made this season under his guidance. Diolch Al! Please can I also remind everyone that the Bragdy Cup is back this year and that entries must be in before April 23rd! Thanks to everyone for their attendance this evening and I hope you all enjoy the entertainment at Maes Tegid. DIOLCH PAWB!

Get to know The Saints | Bala Town vs The New Saints

Club Name: The New Saints Established: 1959 Home: Park Hall Nickname: The Saints, TNS

The New Saints are a professional club who compete in the Cymru Premier, and are currently the most successful club in the Welsh League Pyramid with 13 league titles to their name. The club was founded in 1959 under the name of ‘Llansantffraidd FC’ and would play at the ‘Recreation Ground’ up until 2005, and would then move to their current ground of ‘Park Hall’. After the club won the Welsh Cup in 1996, a local computer company; Total Network Solutions arranged a sponsorship deal which involved incorporating the company name into the club name, meaning the club was now named as ‘Total Network Solutions Llansantffraidd FC’. Winning the Welsh Cup meant the club qualified for the European Cup Winners’ Cup, and they would go on to play Polish Cup winners Ruch Chorzow, and managed a 1-1 draw in their first ever European match, however they would go on to lose the tie on an aggregate score of 6-1 after a 5-0 away defeat. In 1997, the club changed their name again to ‘Total Network Solutions FC’ meaning it was the first instance of a football club renaming itself after its sponsor’s name only. TNS would then become the only club to have full-time playing staff after the collapse of Barry Town in 2003. In 2003, the club would merge with Oswestry Town despite the two club’s being separated by the border, despite UEFA’s initial objection to the idea because of the two clubs competing under two different governing bodies. After the computer company ‘Total Network Solutions’ was bought out by ‘British Telecom’ the club would have to find a new name after the sponsorship arrangement had ended. The name ‘The New Saints’ was agreed after it seemed appropriate due to the history of the original merged clubs. The New Saints have since became the powerhouses of Welsh Football, both domestically and on the European stage after coming close on many occasions to reaching the group stages of a European competition. The club also holds a worldwide record of the most consecutive club victories by a top-flight team, as they surpassed Ajax’s 26 game winning run in December 2016 with a 2-0 win over Cefn Druids. The record is recognised by the ‘Guinness World Records’ as the most consecutive victories in footballing history.

We are delighted that they continue to sponsor the club’s playing shorts and last year went a huge step further when they kindly agreed to sponsor our Academy’s Head of Coaching car. Previous Match Report | Bala Town vs The New Saints

Will Evans hits hat-trick as Lakesiders run riot against Penybont Will Evans was the star of the show at the SDM Glass Stadium as he continued his fine form to score a hat-trick in a 5-0 Lakesiders win against Penybont. Two goals in two minutes from Evans set Bala well on their way to victory before Chris Venables added a third heading into half-time. Evans then completed his hat-trick from the spot following the break while Dean Ebbe added further misery on the hosts with his added-time goal. Will Evans scores two in two minutes! On the back of a brace scored in mid-week, Evans entered the six-pointer with Penybont with skyhigh confidence. This was on full display when he aimed a curled effort for the top corner early on, but the ball went just past the wrong side of the post.

18 | balatownfc.co.uk

Not much later he got his goal as the Wales international played a one-two with Ebbe before firing the ball right into the bottom corner. Straight after the restart, he made it two. A mistake at the back seeing Kane Owen head the ball straight into the path of Evans who had the simplest task of finding the net as he grabbed a two-minute brace. Ramsay denies Snaith from close range It was then our other Wales international’s turn to show off his capabilities as Alex Ramsay pulled off a great save to deny Sam Snaith’s powerful header from six yards out. Venables makes it three. The Lakesiders were in dreamland thirty minutes in as Venables made it three to the good for Colin Caton’s men. The captain anticipating a cross which the Bont defence failed to deal with as he patiently controlled the ball before planting it home in his usual fashion. Half-time shortly arrived not long after a few more dangerous Lakesiders attacks with a three-goal advantage to show for Bala’s dominant first-half display.

Previous Match Report | Bala Town vs The New Saints Will Evans is a hat-trick hero Not long after the break, Evans received the opportunity to complete his hat-trick from the spot. Owen giving away a penalty against his side as he handled the ball with his arm in an unnatural position. Our number eight stood up and found the back of the net with his shot obtaining too much power for the palms of Ashley Morris. A first senior hat-trick for Evans to complete an unforgettable week for the 24-year-old. Unbelievably, it was almost four for Evans minutes later as he had an effort saved from close range by the former Lakesiders goalkeeper. Again, Bala came looking to draw more blood. This time off the bench Ollie Shannon looked to add his name to scoresheet with his powerful effort from range which stung the palms of Morris before Ebbe was unable to convert the rebound.

The Lakesiders remain second but now go six points clear of Penybont. Five games remain with the league leaders up next for Bala. Tuesday night football returns to Maes Tegid on April 5th as TNS visit to take on Bala with kick-off set for 19:45pm. Line-ups: Bala Town – Alex Ramsay, Oliver Southern, Nathan Peate, Antony Kay, Sean Smith, Kieran Smith, Dave Edwards, Paul Rutherford, Will Evans, Dean Ebbe, Chris Venables Penybont – Ashley Morris, Liam Walsh, Kane Owen, Daniel Jeffries, Lewis Harling, Billy Borge, Lewis Clutton, Ryan Reynolds, Sam Snaith, Nathan Wood, Ben Ahmun Written By: Dion Williams

Ebbe makes it a FIVE-star performance! The pair then combined in added-time to complete a perfect performance as Ebbe added to his account for the season with a goal set-up by Shannon. Some great link-up play in the buildup to create the chance that secured our biggest league win of the season.
