Nigel Aykroyd Interview | Bala Town vs Flint Town United

Another hugely important JD Cymru Premier fixture for a Friday evening at Maes Tegid and although every league fixture is important the significance of tonight’s match should not be undervalued as we fight to claw our way back from a disappointing run of results. Our last fixture away at Newtown showed positive signs of a return to a semblance of the form which put us on a 10 match unbeaten run at the start of the season. We were surely again disappointed not to bring home all 3 points that evening but defensive frailties let us down and the brace of goals from Nathan Peate rescued a point. Tonight we welcome high flying Flint Town who have had a superb season to date under their new Management team. We secured all 3 points when we visited Flint with a last gasp goal and will certainly be under a severe test of our credentials if we are to replicate that victory. It again promises to be a very tight encounter but one I am confident that we use to turn our season around and begin the progression back up the table.

Our next home fixture follows quickly next Friday evening again with the MG Nathaniel League Cup Semi Final against Connahs Quay. We certainly do not want a repeat of the disastrous League fixture when we went down 4.0 at home against the Quay but there is no doubt that this will present another significant challenge if we are to progress to our first Cup Final since the momentous Welsh Cup Final in 2017. Exciting times as always at Maes Tegid!! My anticipation is that excitement and entertainment await you all tonight. Please enjoy. Diolch Pawb. Nigel.

We are delighted to welcome Awi Griffiths to Maes Tegid this evening as our Match sponsor. Awi has had a lifelong association with the Club as Player, Manager, Committee member and supporter and we are indebted to him for his fantastic support for the Club. Thanks Awi. It is brilliant to see you and all your guests here with us this evening. Please enjoy and hopefully cheer us on to 3 points!

Get to know The Silkmen | Bala Town vs Flint Town United

Club Name: Flint Town United Established: 1886 Home: Essity Stadium Nickname: The Silkmen

Flint Town United are a semi-professional side who play their games at the Essity Stadium and compete in the Cymru Premier League. The Silkmen were founded in 1886 as Flint FC, who played at ‘Strand Park’ which was located on the banks of the Dee Estuary. The club was founding members of the North Wales Coast League in 1893, and actually won the inaugural Championship by two points to Llandudno Swifts. In 1924, the club would leave their home ground of ‘Strand Park’ and move to ‘Holywell Road’ which was their ground until 1993. The following year, they would reach the Welsh Cup Final where they unfortunately lost to Wrexham’s professional team 3-1. In 1930, they would join the newly formed Welsh League which operated between 1930 and 1935, as the Silkmen won the title in 1933 after scoring 99 goals in just 18 games! One of the club’s biggest achievements was winning the Welsh Senior Cup in 1954, with inspiration from Welsh International Billy Hughes, the club overcame Cardiff City in the SemiFinal and went on to beat Chester City 2-0 in the Final at a packed out Racecourse Stadium. However, at the end of the 1961-62 season, the club were relegated and a downfall came as the crowds of old started to disappear and ultimately brought a decline in the club’s fortunes. In 1993, the club became founding members of the ‘League Of Wales’ while also moving to another new ground back to the banks of the Dee Estuary. However after just five years in the ‘League of Wales’ the club lost its place in the league despite finishing third from bottom, due to the league reducing the number of teams in the league under UEFA rules. In the 2005/06 season, the Silkmen were almost promoted to the Welsh Premier League after going on a 25 game unbeaten run, only for them to lose out by four points at the end of the season. After finishing runners-up to Prestatyn Town in the 2019/20, the Silkmen were promoted to the Cymru Premier after Prestatyn had failed to gain a domestic license to be in the top division. Therefore after 22 years, Flint were back in the top division!

Get to know The Silkmen | Bala Town vs Flint Town United

It’s been an unbelievable season so far for the Silkmen, who currently sit in 2nd place behind The New Saints by just six points. Their recent form however isn’t too great, with just two wins in their last five in all competitions. They were knocked out of the JD Welsh Cup by neighbours Connah’s Quay Nomads by a 2-0 score-line at the Essity Stadium, before going toe-to-toe with the league frontrunners in The New Saints. The Silkmen stole a point in the dying embers of the game through Kai Edwards who netted a 92nd minute equaliser to grab a point from 10 man TNS. Next up was a Friday Night trip to Aberystwyth, to face a struggling Aber side who’ve occupied 2nd from bottom for a good chunk of the season. Thankfully for Flint, they avoided any slip up after the home side equalised in the 65th minute after Jack Kenny’s first half goal, as Kenny grabbed his brace just five minutes after the Aber had equalised. Penybont then made the trip up North to face the Silkmen on MD12 of the Cymru Premier season, and again Jack Kenny was at the double with two goals in the second half, accompanied by a Michael Wilde goal late in the first half to give Flint a 3-1 win against the Bont. Most recently, the Silkmen dropped points to Cefn Druids who currently sit on two points at the bottom of the league. A point was rescued at ‘The Rock’ as Michael Wilde cancelled out Mitchell Williams’ 4th minute goal in the 77th minute to claw a point back. However with other results going their way on the same night, Flint must look back and think what a opportunity it was to close the gap on TNS to four points…

(A) Cefn Druids 1-1 – Cymru Premier MD13 (H) Penybont 3-1 – Cymru Premier MD12 (A) Aberystwyth 1-2 – Cymru Premier MD11 (H) The New Saints 1-1 – Cymru Premier MD10 (H) Connah’s Quay Nomads 0-2 – JD Welsh Cup

The Silkmen Dangerman | Bala Town vs Flint Town United Name: Michael Wilde Position: Forward The former Connah’s Quay Nomads front man has continued his goal-scoring form at the age of 38, and is going toe-to-toe with the likes of Declan McManus of TNS and Aaron Williams of Newtown at the top of the goal-scoring charts. Wilde has 11 goals in 12 league appearances, and has two goals in three appearances in the JD Welsh Cup. The 38 year old showed his dominance in the reverse fixture at the start of October, as he put his side ahead in the first half with a brilliant header, but luckily for the Lakesiders we managed to turn it around on the night. Therefore, Michael Wilde will definitely be the Danger Man tonight, as he looks to keep up with Declan McManus at the top of the goal- scoring chart, and helping his team to continue the chase with TNS.

Previous Meeting | Flint Town United 1 vs 2 Bala Town

Dave Edwards’ added-time winner claims victory for the Lakesiders Dave Edwards’ added-time winner saw the Lakesiders clinch three points at the Essity Stadium as we came from behind to beat Flint Town United and jump to 2nd in the league. Bala dominate the opening exchanges The Lakesiders controlled possession in the early stages and looked to break down the Silkmen’s defence but were limited to set pieces as Flint survived the early pressure. Paul Rutherford looked particularly dangerous as his non-stop work rate helped keep the Silkmen pinned in their own half of the pitch. Wilde gives Flint the lead The Silkmen settled into the game from there and looked to attack down the left through threatening left back Samuel Hart. Hart almost gave his side the lead when his inviting cross was met by Jack Kenny in the Bala box, yet he couldn’t direct his header on target. It was Hart again minutes later, delivering another

18 | balatownfc.co.uk

dangerous cross into the area and this time it was met by the head of the unforgiving Michael Wilde who directed his header past Harri Lloyd to give his side the lead. Flint taking the lead just before the hour mark, shocked Bala who had been on top for large parts of the first-half. Wilde almost made Bala pay again, when he stole the ball on the halfway line from a poorly directed pass to Oliver Southern, he drove towards Lloyd’s goal but his effort luckily came off the post as Bala blew a sigh of relief. The Lakesiders stayed composed till half-time as Bala could reset and go again after the break. Bala threaten to equalise in the second-half Brad Bauress played playmaker in the secondhalf as he looked to provide the creative spark for an equaliser. He went close to producing it when his low driven cross found a stretching Dave Edwards at the back post, but his shot was tipped away by John Rushton. Again, Bauress almost produced the equaliser when his cross found Nathan Peate minutes later, but his headed effort was met by another Rushton save.

Previous Meeting | Flint Town United 1 vs 2 Bala Town Mendes > Venables > GOAL Lassana Mendes came on to the pitch as Colin Caton looked for an impact from his bench with time running out for Bala to get something out of the 2nd vs 3rd clash. He got exactly what he wished for when Mendes delivered a sublime cross into the back post and was headed in by who else, but Chris Venables! The captain drawing us level and giving us the momentum to push for a winner with the supersub’s pinpoint cross helping Bala break the Flint resistance. Dave Edwards wins it at the death! Both sides pushed for the winner with 15 minutes left following Venables’ equaliser, and Flint almost had an immediate response when Jake Phillips received the ball in front of the Bala goal, with a free shot at grabbing potentially the winner with only Lloyd to beat but could only drag his shot wide as a huge chance for the hosts went by. It was Bala though who had their tails up and looked likely to complete the turnaround late into the game, with substitutes Mendes and Chris Sang having a positive impact in the final third. It was Sang’s turn to make his impact from the

bench, and he did exactly that when his display of individual magic on the wing saw him take on his man and whip a cross into the awaiting Edwards. The former Wales international volleying the ball home as Bala clinched victory in the last minute having fought back from a goal down! This vital win sees Bala Town climb Flint Town into 2nd, the Lakesiders now sitting four points behind the league leaders TNS, with the title race well and truly on. The Lakesiders will be in action again on Saturday 9th of October, as we take on Cefn Druids at Maes Tegid, with kick-off at 2:30pm. Match Stats: Bala Town - Harri Lloyd, Calum Woods, Nathan Peate, Oliver Southern, Ollie Shannon, Steven Leslie, Kieran Smith, Paul Rutherford, Brad Bauress, David Edwards, Chris Venables Flint Town - John Rushton, Jake Phillips, Sam Hart, Ben Maher, Kai Edwards, Jack Kenny, Michael Wilde, Mark Cadwallader, Daniel Roberts, Ross Weaver, Daniel Harrison Goals: Michael Wilde (31), Chris Venables (76), David Edwards (90+2)

BARNSLEY / TRANMERE ROVERS / HUDDERSFIELD TOWN / MK DONS / BURY / PORT VALE / CHORLEY

Antony Kay signed for the Lakesiders in August 2020, leaving National League club Chorley after making just four appearances for the club. Kay has a wealth of experience in the Football League, playing as high as the First Division (Premier League) with Barnsley between 2000 and 2002. The Midfielder spent most of his career in League One, with Barnsley, Tranmere Rovers, Huddersfield Town, MK Dons and Bury and won many promotions with the clubs he joined. He helped his hometown team Barnsley into the Championship in 2006 after scoring the winning penalty in the Play-Off final against Swansea City, but soon after winning promotion, Kay would leave to join Tranmere Rovers in June 2007, and was voted the club’s Player Of The Season for the 2008-2009 season. His next promotion came during his time at Huddersfield Town, where they were promoted to the Championship after a Play-Off final win against Sheffield United. Yet, again he would stay in League One, joining MK Dons in August 2012, and again won promotion with the Dons after securing a runners-up spot in the 2014-15 season. Antony also has one appearance for the England U18’s, as he was capped against Switzerland on May 30th 2001, coming on as a substitute. Now, playing for the Lakesiders, he made 28 appearances for the club last season and netted five times. However, this season he’s only appeared four times in the league to a lengthy time out with illness, and now comes back ready to fight for his place in the team and help the team bounce back from a rough patch of form recently.

Previous Match Report | Newtown 3 vs 3 Bala Town

Lakesiders earn late point in sixgoal encounter

up. The Lakesiders entered half-time with the deadlock yet to have been broken with Jones denying us at every opportunity.

The Lakesiders lost the lead twice before fighting back for a point in the thick of a crazy second-half which saw six goals scored in a pulsating draw with Newtown.

Peate’s opener cancelled out immediately by Evans’ equaliser

Nathan Peate grabbed a brace with his first giving Bala the lead, and his second grabbing an equaliser late on as the points were shared in a thrilling encounter. Jones pulls off two sensational saves to deny Bala Fifteen minutes in, Steve Leslie did brilliantly to somehow get anoff-balance shot away to nearly open proceedings only for Dave Jones to match his effort with a superb save. While not long later, Jones was called into action once more when Lassana Mendes whipped in an incredible cross, which was inch-perfect for the head of Dave Edwards yet there was Jones again to keep the scores level. The Robins then had the ball in the back of the net just before the break as James Davies scored from close range, only for play to be brought back with an offside given in the build-

24 | balatownfc.co.uk

Antony Kay came off the bench at half-time and was straight into the action providing the assist for Peate’s opener as he headed the ball across for the defender to give us a well- deserved lead. Yet Bala’s lead lasted only two minutes as Alex Ramsay’s howler at the back saw Newtown equalise. The goalkeeper had placed the ball down ready to kick having collected it from a cross, unaware of Nick Rushton’s presence behind him, the Newtown player poachedthe ball off of him and assisted Jordan Evans who had all the time in the world to draw his side level. Mendes restores Bala’s lead Bala’s spirits remained high despite Ramsay’s unfortunate mistake as we came straight on the attack. Another goalkeeping mistake then occurred to restore our lead as Jones misread Lassana Mendes’ cross with the ball crawling past the keeper to give the Lakesiders the advantage once more.

Previous Match Report | Newtown 3 vs 3 Bala Town Newtown shock Bala with two in quick succession With the score back in Bala’s favour, Newtown were forced into bringing the game at us with time ticking down following a crazy opening fifteen minutes of the second-half. However, with top goal scorer Aaron Williams not in the matchday squad, Newtown were calling out for another player to step up and make the difference, Nick Rushton was that man. Having created the first with his intelligent thinking, the midfielder then curled in the equaliser as his shot beat Ramsay in net to bring the Robins level for a second time. The hosts weren’t finished there as they continued to attack. Rushton then setup Evans for a second time in the match to smash home what the Newtown fans thought was the winner with little time remaining for the Lakesiders to respond. Peate’s brace rescues a late point! But respond they did, asPeate struck home a header from a Paul Rutherford corner to give Bala a late point. A remarkable second-half came to a close with three goals a piece and the points shared in Latham Park.

completethe turnaround. However, Colin Caton will be left disappointed to have only a point having led twice during the six-goal thriller. Friday night football will be back at Maes Tegid in our next outing as Flint Town arrive to Town on November 19th with kick-off set at 19:45pm. Match Stats: Newtown – Dave Jones, Brett Taylor, Callum Roberts, Shane Sutton, FumpaMwandwe, Nick Rushton, Jordan Evans, James Davies, Craig Williams, George Hughes, Jake Walker. Our Reserves team were re-established in 2019 after the club considered it to be a vital part of the community to provide local players the opportunity to play for Bala Town. In the Reserves’ first and only season playing in the Wrexham Area Reserves & Colts Division, they would finish 10th out of 14 teams in the league, however after the COVID 19 pandemic hit and put a halt on our lives, their season was curtailed on May 19th 2020 and their final league position would be determined on an unweighted points per game method.

The Season So Far

Fast forward to now, and our Reserves enter a new league system, now playing in the FAW Reserve League North West, and have seen many new players arrive and many players depart.

Two defeats would follow by a score-line of 2-1 against Holywell Town Reserves and St Asaph Reserves, but next came the game of the season so far… Conwy Borough Reserves were the visitors to Maes Tegid on the 20th of August, and what a game it was! The visitors took an early 4-0 lead after just 27 minutes, but the deficit was halved by half-time as Cai Aykroyd scored two goals in 12 minutes. However the visitors grabbed another goal shortly after half-time to make it 5-2, but again our Reserves came back through Geth Edwards’ four minutes later. Cai Aykroyd then grabbed his hat-trick three minutes later to cut the deficit once more. Yet again the visitors grabbed another goal with 25 minutes remaining,

Our Reserves kicked off their league campaign with a home match against Denbigh Town Reserves on the 30th of July, and were unlucky not to come away with three points after going 2-0 up after the 47th minute, however Denbigh came back to lead 3-2 in the 89th minute. The drama didn’t stop there, as Llion Thomas grabbed his 2nd goal of the game to level the game up in the 94th minute!

now with the score at 6-4. Geth Edwards went a grabbed his brace minutes after the visitors’ 6 th goal and cut the deficit to just one goal! With 10 minutes remaining, with the score poised at 6-5, either side could still grab a goal of their own… and thankfully it was our Reserves who grabbed it! Will Hughes levelled the scoring to make it 6-6 and win back a point for the Reserves in an unbelievable match. Our Reserves stepped into September and took on Llanrwst United Reserves at Maes Tegid, yet that first victory still eluded the Reserves, as the they would have to come from behind once again to snatch a point in added time, as Llion Thomas scored in the 93rd minute to earn a point in a 3-3 draw.

The first victory came in their next match, as they faced Llangefni Town Reserves at Maes Tegid but it wasn’t all plain sailing, as the visitors took the lead half way through the second half. But, goals from Llion Thomas and a free kick from Geth Edwards gave the Reserves their first three points of the season! Their most recent result was against Porthmadog Reserves, and unfortunately three goals weren’t enough to win them the match, as Porthmadog took all three points with a 4-3 victory at Maes Tegid. Our Reserves now step into November after FOUR weeks of no fixtures, and hope to gain some points to climb up the table with games against Llanrwst United, Holyhead Hotspur, Conwy Borough and Llandudno.
