At the time of writing these programme notes I am torn between delight and despair! Despair at our penalty shootout loss in the Welsh Cup Semi Final against Penybont in Aberystwyth last Friday evening and delight as we sit in second spot in the JD Cymru Premier with only 7 fixtures remaining. It was certainly a disappointment to lose our 4th Welsh Cup Semi Final and to lose in the cruellest way possible on a penalty shootout. However this defeat must surely galvanise our focus on the League position as we enter the business end of the season. The run in begins this evening against what will be fiercely competitive opposition from our Gwynedd rivals Caernarfon. We ran out 3-0 winners when we met last at Maes Tegid but the “Cofis” have had a good run of form and will prove a serious threat to our aim of achieving the pricelees 3 points tonight. I am sincerely hoping for an excellent match to excite us all at Maes Tegid and look forward to a large crowd to build the atmosphere in our local derby.

As the season begins its wind down I would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone of events which will be fast approaching on the calendar. Our Reserves still have 8 matches to complete and would love your support. We have planned an end of season get together for everyone after our last 1st team home fixture v Penybont on April 23rd in the Plas Coch. The historic Bragdy Cup tournament will return this year during May and entry details will be following very shortly. We are also planning a family fun day on Good Friday for our match against Newtown and all would be hugely welcome. As always a lot going on at Maes Tegid and together with the Academy utilisation of the pitch plus our excellent partnership with Bala Juniors the footfall is considerable and makes Maes Tegid a real hub for community activity.

Get to know The Cofi’s | Bala Town vs Caernarfon Town
Club Name: Caernarfon Town Established: 1937 Home: The Oval Nickname: The Canaries/The Cofi’s
Caernarfon Town are a professional Football Club who compete in the Cymru Premier league and are classed as the Lakesiders’ closest rivals, with both clubs residing in the county Gwynedd. The club has its nickname ‘The Canaries’ because of their yellow and green strip. The first known football club in Caernarfon was known as ‘Caernarvon Wanderers’ and was formed in 1876, and were the first North West Wales to enter the FA Cup and were defeated 10-1 by Stoke. However in 1891 the club went out of existence, until 1894 where several of the former players began a new club called ‘Caernarvon Ironopolis’ which would not last very long, as a dispute with the North Wales Coast League lead to the club folding in 1903. The current club was formed in 1937 and entered the Welsh League North Division One, and went on to win the league in 1946-47 & 1965-66. However, problems ensued again as the club withdrew from the league in 1976, only to be re-formed 12 months later. The club bounced back with two Championship wins in each of its next two seasons! Caernarfon were welcomed into the League of Wales in 1995 after years of playing over the border, and reached the semi-final of both the League Cup and North Wales Coast FA Cup in their first season back playing in Wales. In 2009, the club’s future was in doubt with the finances at an all time low, however after resignations from the directors, a group of current club officials and supporters took over running of the club, and put a plan in place to keep the club in existence. They were promoted to the Welsh Premier League for the 2018-19 season after being in the Cymru Alliance since the 2008-2009 season, as they managed 65 points in 28 games to win the league. In their first season back in the top division, they managed to finish in 4th place and Qualified for the Europa League Play-Offs. However, the Cofi’s would end their season with defeat to Cardiff Met in the Europa League Play-Offs with a 3-2 score line at The Oval.

Caernarfon Town Form The visitors have had a topsy-turvy season so far, with 11 wins, four draws and 10 defeats, with only four victories coming at their home ground of The Oval. The Cofi’s sit in 5th position in the league table, and are only three points away from the Lakesiders in 2nd, as we head into the business end of the season. Huw Griffiths’ men come into this game on the back of a 2-1 home win Flint Town United, as Sion Bradley and former Town man Danny Gosset got on the score sheet inside the first half. Just 10 days prior to their win against Flint, the Cofi’s managed an impressive 3-0 away victory against JD Welsh Cup finalists Penybont.

The Cofi’s Dangerman | Bala Town vs Caernarfon Town Name: Mike Hayes Position: Forward The former Bala man, Mike Hayes could be the difference for the visitors this evening with four goals in his last five appearances for the Cofi’s, which includes a goal against Bala in our 3-3 draw with the Cofi’s at the start of February. So far this season, Hayes has managed eight goals in 23 league appearances and is Caernarfon’s top goal scorer for the season, with only Darren Thomas coming close to him with five goals. Having been in some decent form going into tonight’s game, we expect Hayes to be the danger man for the Cofi’s should he feature.

Honours Even In The Derby It was honours even in the Gwynedd Derby on Saturday evening, as we concluded the double header with our local rivals, after collecting four out of a maximum six points. The point earned at The Oval secured the Lakesiders’ place in the Champions Conference for the 8th time in the club’s proud history.
The home side huffed and puffed throughout the first half to try and claw an equaliser, but were open on the counter attack on many times. Sion Bradley on many occassions was the danger man for the Cofi’s, as he sent an effort towards goal from outside the area, however the wind took the direction of the ball away from goal.
Deadline Day signing Dean Ebbe was on form once again, netting two first half goals before Will Evans was needed to poke home from close range to rescue a point from the Oval.
With only a minute to go of the first half, the partnership of Lassana Mendes and Dean Ebbe struck again! Mendes managed to get to the byline again, and put in a lovely chipped ball between the keeper and the back post, where the on-rushing Dean Ebbe came to tap the ball home to double his tally and our lead.

It was a great start to the game from the Lakesiders who looked threatening from the off, with the front three of Brad Bauress, Dean Ebbe and Will Evans looking to cause damage to the Cofi defence. It wasn’t long until Dean Ebbe’s brilliance showed once again, along with the trickery of Lassana Mendes, who made his way to the byline to set up a cross to Ebbe, who finished wonderfully into the bottom right corner to give the Lakesiders the lead!
The hosts struck back just after the break, from what looked like a corner that was dealt with, however as the corner was cleared to Joe Faux, he made some space on his right foot and hit a perfect ball into the near post just past the reach of Ramsay to get his side back in the game.

Bradley hits a stunner! With 20 minutes remaining, the hosts had their tails up having got a goal back, and were rewarded after Sion Bradley cut in from the left hand side, and hit a wonder strike into the far right hand corner with no chance for Ramsay, to give his side the equaliser.

Paul Rutherford | Bala Town vs Caernarfon Town NAME: PAUL RUTHERFORD POSITION: FORWARD NATIONALITY: ENGLISH FORMER CLUBS: CHESTER CITY | BARROW SOUTHPORT | WREXHAM
Paul joined the Lakesiders in June of 2021 having left Wrexham AFC after spending the past five years at the Racecourse. The Forward spent his youth career at Liverpool and Chester City academy, until Chester rewarded him with a professional contract after impressing in their youth team. He spent six years with Chester until he decided to move to Barrow, where he would pick up the 2009-2010 FA Trophy in a 2-1 win over Stevenage at Wembley. After 160+ appearances over a four year period, Paul would move to Southport in 2013. Three years later he was on the move once more, as Wrexham came calling in 2016. The 34 year old would spend five years at the Racecourse, and was admired for his workrate by the Wrexham faithful after making 180+ appearances for the club. Rutherford would then make the switch to the Cymru Premier in 2021, joining the Lakesiders ahead of our Europa Conference League ties with Larne FC. In all competitions, Paul has made 31 appearances, and grabbing five goals and five assists while playing as a right winger for the Town, and has brought a wealth of experience with him after his time in the English League system.

In the Reserves’ first and only season playing in the Wrexham Area Reserves & Colts Division, they would finish 10th out of 14 teams in the league, however after the COVID 19 pandemic hit and put a halt on our lives, their season was curtailed on May 19th 2020 and their final league position would be determined on an unweighted points per game method. Fast forward to now, and our Reserves enter a new league system, now playing in the FAW Reserve League North West, and have seen many new players arrive and many players depart. Penalty Heartache Sends Lakesiders Out Of The Cup
Kane Owen came close for his side early on, with a powerful effort towards goal which had to be blocked well by Calum Woods.
It was penalty heartache for the Lakesiders on Friday evening, as we attempted to progress to the Final of the JD Welsh Cup for only the second time in the club’s history, however it wasn’t to be on the night, as Penybont claimed a penalty shoot-out victory at Aberystwyth’s Park Avenue Stadium.
Penybont really should have taken the lead on 35 minutes as Sam Snaith was given too much space inside the Bala box to get on the end of a cross, but Alex Ramsay pulled off a stunning point blank range save to tip the ball onto the crossbar. After an evenly contested half of football, the referee brought the half to an end with the game scoreless.
The match was a close encounter throughout the 90 minutes, but neither team could make a breakthrough, despite the Lakesiders having the ball in the Penybont net in the second half.
