As we were unable to produce a programme over New Year I would like to reflect on last year as a whole as we battled against the trials and tribulations of the worldwide pandemic and attempted to return our lives to a resemblance of normality. We started the year in lockdown and then staggered through a programme of matches to enable us to complete the League after the March restart. The outcome was a 3rd place finish and yet another European qualification which was of course always the target which we aimed for. Colin began his 19th season in charge of the team and we were drawn against the Northern Ireland Premier League side of Larne in the Europa Conference Cup. It was a fascinating experience again and we made a raft of new friends and acquaintances during our 2 matches against this very strong team. We were narrowly beaten 1.0 in both matches but put on an excellent performance and were defeated with our heads held high. The season never really ended for us and we were back in training for the new campaign as soon as Europe was over. It has been extremely demanding for all concerned and there has been no let up as we head towards 2022. However despite all the difficulties the Club achieved its targets and as always we must thank all involved for the tremendous work they put in to ensure that the Club remains at the very top of Welsh domestic football. It is impossible to single out individuals but I am so grateful to my Board of Directors, my Management Committee, the Club Academy team, the Reserve team, all our Club sponsors, the First Team Management and of course the Players who all must work so closely together to maintain the high standards which we have come to expect at Maes Tegid. It is 6 weeks since our last home JD Cymru Premier League fixture and the on/off pandemic hit programme is once again back up and running. Our ability to draw League matches was also again emphasised

last Saturday when we returned from the long journey to Cardiff Met with a goalless encounter. The inability to find the winning solution to games has resulted in our 8th draw of the campaign and without a doubt this is something we will have to put right if we are to secure a top 6 place when the League splits. We have 3 out of the 4 remaining fixtures at Maes Tegid and you would have to think that a 3 point haul this evening would be a minimum return if we are to continue that challenge. It is so apparent that we are only fractions away from returning to our very best and at times our football in Cardiff was full of promise only for a final third failure to produce the goods on the field. It promises to be a hugely exciting match this evening against our high flying opponents who sit proudly in second spot in the League. Their sparkling form has probably taken a lot of pundits by surprise but they certainly merit their position and tonight will be a really tough test. We perhaps made some bad mistakes when we visited Latham Park earlier in the season and only came away with a draw. We need to go one better this evening! Get to know The Robins | Bala Town vs Newtown

Club Name: Newtown AFC Established: 1875 Home: Latham Park Nickname: The Robins

Newtown AFC hail from Newtown, Powys in mid-Wales and are the only team from Powys playing in the Cymru Premier. The original club was founded in 1875 as Newtown White Stars and was one of the founding members of the Football Association of Wales, and appeared in the first Welsh Cup match on October 13th 1877, and was believed to have merged with Newtown Excelisor to form the current club, Newtown AFC. The Club would play in the Mid-Wales League or the Central Wales League as it was once known for many years, while picking up the title on several occasions between 1975 and 1988. With this great title winning record, Newtown gained entry into the Northern Premier League in the English League System. However, in 1992 the club became founding members of the League of Wales, despite being reluctant to join at first. Then in the 1995-96 and 1997-98 season, Newtown would finish runners up in the league, granting them access to the UEFA Cup. They would go on the play Skonto Riga of Latvia and Wisla Krakow of Poland, but would unfortunately fall to defeat on both occasions, conceding seven on aggregate in both ties. Newtown have enjoyed success in Europe however, after coming up against Maltese side Valletta who are the same side that the Lakesiders defeated to gain progression to the Second Qualifying Round of the Europa League for the first time in our history. Newtown on the other hand, would have to play two legs over the tie, and would end up beating the Maltese side 2-1 in both legs to gain progression to the next round, where they would face Danish giants Copenhagen. The Danish side would brush past the Robins with a 5-1 aggregate win.

Get to know The Robins | Bala Town vs Newtown

Newtown AFC Form Newtown have had a great season so far, and are most likely the surprise packages of this season along with Flint Town. The Robins currently sit in 2nd place behind The New Saints, and have accumulated 33 points from 18 games, which consist of 10 wins, three draws and five defeats. The Robins have managed 37 goals in 18 games, which is an average of two goals per game, while conceding 22 goals. They are currently 14 points away from the leaders TNS, but are yet to mathematically confirm their top six spot, with their only being a seven point between 2nd and 7th place. Most recently, the Mid-Wales side have had a good run of form, with just one defeat in their last six games as they lost 2-0 to league leaders TNS. They have however fell just short of victory in two of their last six, with a 3-3 draw against us, and most recently a 1-1 draw against Haverfordwest County. Their last three victories have come against Flint Town, Aberystwyth Town and Barry Town, scoring 2 or more in all three games to secure victory.

The Robins Dangerman | Bala Town vs Newtown Name: Aaron Williams Position: Forward Williams has been back and forth with Michael Wilde at the top of the goal scoring chart so far this season, but Declan McManus has stormed into the lead with 18 goals, while Williams is on 13. Williams has netted in his last two appearances in a 1-1 draw with Haverfordwest County and a 2-0 win over Flint Town. His goals have took Newtown into 2nd in the league this season, and are in a good position to take Newtown back into Europe once again. Tonight will be no different for Williams, as Newtown look to secure their top six place, he will surely be eager to get the ball in the net.

Lakesiders earn late point in sixgoal encounter The Lakesiders lost the lead twice before fighting back for a point in the thick of a crazy second-half which saw six goals scored in a pulsating draw with Newtown. Nathan Peate grabbed a brace with his first giving Bala the lead, and his second grabbing an equaliser late on as the points were shared in a thrilling encounter. Jones pulls off two sensational saves to deny Bala Fifteen minutes in, Steve Leslie did brilliantly to somehow get anoff-balance shot away to nearly open proceedings only for Dave Jones to match his effort with a superb save. While not long later, Jones was called into action once more when Lassana Mendes whipped in an incredible cross, which was inch-perfect for the head of Dave Edwards yet there was Jones again to keep the scores level. The Robins then had the ball in the back of the net just before the break as James Davies scored from close range, only for play to be brought back with an offside given in the buildup. The Lakesiders entered half-time with the deadlock yet to have been broken with Jones denying us at every opportunity.

Peate’s opener cancelled out immediately by Evans’ equaliser. Antony Kay came off the bench at half-time and was straight into the action providing the assist for Peate’s opener as he headed the ball across for the defender to give us a well-deserved lead. Yet Bala’s lead lasted only two minutes as Alex Ramsay’s howler at the back saw Newtown equalise. The goalkeeper had placed the ball down ready to kick having collected it from a cross, unaware of Nick Rushton’s presence behind him, the Newtown player poached the ball off of him and assisted Jordan Evans who had all the time in the world to draw his side level. Mendes restores Bala’s lead. Bala’s spirits remained high despite Ramsay’s unfortunate mistake as we came straight on the attack. Another goalkeeping mistake then occurred to restore our lead as Jones misread Lassana Mendes’ cross with the ball crawling past the keeper to give the Lakesiders the advantage once more. Newtown shock Bala with two in quick succession With the score back in Bala’s favour, Newtown were forced into bringing the game at us with time ticking down following a crazy opening fifteen minutes of the second-half.

Previous Meeting | Newtown 3 vs 3 Bala Town However, with top goal scorer Aaron Williams not in the matchday squad, Newtown were calling out for another player to step up and make the difference, Nick Rushton was that man. Having created the first with his intelligent thinking, the midfielder then curled in the equaliser as his shot beat Ramsay in net to bring the Robins level for a second time. The hosts weren’t finished there as they continued to attack. Rushton then setup Evans for a second time in the match to smash home what the Newtown fans thought was the winner with little time remaining for the Lakesiders to respond.

Jonny joined the Lakesiders in June of 2019 after leaving fellow Cymru Premier side, Connah’s Quay Nomads. Previously, Jonny has been on the books of professional EFL clubs Blackburn Rovers, Wigan Athletic and Rochdale, until he made a permanent move to the Welsh Football Pyramid. He firstly joined Airbus UK in 2014, and stayed at the ‘Wingmakers’ for two years, including a loan from his parent club Llandudno FC in 2015. Jonny helped the club reach the Welsh Cup Semi-Final and Final two years consecutively. He also made his first European appearance in a 2-2 draw to NK Lokomotiva of Croatia in the 2015-16 season. Spittle would leave the ‘Wingmakers’ at the end of the 15-16 season and head to Aberystwyth Town for the 2017-18 season. He would only stay at Aber for one season, where a disappointing season saw them finish in the bottom half on 37 points, just eight points clear of relegation. He would then join another Welsh Premier League side in Connah’s Quay Nomads for the 2018-19 season, and would enjoy success as the Nomads finished in 2nd place and also grabbed another European appearance as he featured in the Nomads’ 2-0 away defeat to Belarusian side Shakhtyor Soligorsk. After 16 months at the club and making 16 appearances, Jonny would make Maes Tegid his next destination. Now, after over three years with the Lakesiders, Jonny has enjoyed success at European level, having featured in the club’s historic 1-0 victory over Maltese side Valletta, to secure the club’s first ever progression to the Second Qualifying Round of a European competition! Despite missing a chunk of this season already due to injury, Jonny is now back fit and fighting for his place again after making only five league appearances this season.

NoHomeKit Campaign| Bala Town vs Newtown Bala Town Football Club has joined with clubs across the JD Cymru Leagues in showing support for the national #NoHomeKit campaign taking place across England and Wales. Shelter Cymru are asking clubs and fans in Wales to ‘ditch their home shirt’ for their games over the festive period to raise awareness of the housing emergency. JD Cymru Premier clubs will show their support for the campaign in their Boxing Day fixtures, while JD Cymru North and JD Cymru South clubs will also back the initiative over the course of the festive period. Homelessness, and the housing crisis in general, is reaching a critical point; one in three people in Wales have been affected by the housing emergency. Football can be a powerful ally in the fight to end the housing emergency and Shelter Cymru is actively encouraging as many clubs in Wales as possible to get involved with #NoHomeKit campaign. This follows support for the campaign from a number of English Football League clubs as well as the National League, Southern, Isthmian and Northern Premier League in England. The unique connection clubs throughout the country have to their communities will help Shelter Cymru’s goals as an organisation and the idea of ‘home’ on which this campaign is based. Kerys Sheppard, Head of Fundraising at Shelter Cymru, said: “We’re thrilled that the JD Cymru Leagues is officially backing the No Home Kit campaign. We hope their support encourages even more people to come on board to help us raise awareness of homelessness this Christmas. “No Home Kit is a simple idea that anyone can get involved with to help make a difference. We’re just asking the football community to unite for the festive round of fixtures by swapping their team’s ‘home’ colours for their away or third kit as a powerful act of solidarity for people without a home. “More than 1500 children in Wales will be without a home this Christmas and, sadly, many more individuals and families are at risk of losing their homes with a tough winter ahead. “We hope as many clubs, players and fans as possible continue to join #NoHomeKit so we can harness the unifying power of football and do something special to help those facing and experiencing homelessness in Wales.”

In the Reserves’ first and only season playing in the Wrexham Area Reserves & Colts Division, they would finish 10th out of 14 teams in the league, however after the COVID 19 pandemic hit and put a halt on our lives, their season was curtailed on May 19th 2020 and their final league position would be determined on an unweighted points per game method. Fast forward to now, and our Reserves enter a new league system, now playing in the FAW Reserve League North West, and have seen many new players arrive and many players depart. Evans continued to be the biggest threat to The Archers’ defence as we looked to find the attacker with every break forward. Yet our first opportunity of the second-half fell to stand-in captain Antony Kay who was on the end of our best chance of breaking the deadlock in the second-half. But his header failed to hit the target from a cross as it sailed over the bar.

With Chris Venables suspended, it was Evans who led the line for Colin Caton’s side with Dave Edwards in his preferred midfield slot for the match.
