A very warm welcome to all again at Maes Tegid this evening for the match against Caernarfon which was originally scheduled for Boxing Day. The return to play after the latest Covid shutdown has been relatively kind to Colin’s team with a win and a draw without conceding and these points have been enough to put us back into contention for a European qualification spot. It is however so important for us to continue to improve to firstly secure a top 6 finish and then to challenge further up the table. Our opponents tonight are in a similar position and the next 2 back to back fixtures against each other will go a long way to determining the outcome of the season for both Clubs. It really could not be closer and it provides a perfect platform for an enthralling encounter this evening.

The Club very much hopes that we will be able to run our historic Bragdy Cup tournament this summer after the cancellation of the last 2 seasons due to the pandemic regulations. Please can you begin to think about getting your teams ready to enter. The rules will be the same as when we ran the last tournament and it will be brilliant to see the return of this much loved competition. I sincerely hope you enjoy the match this evening and that we can deliver the priceless points which are on offer. DIOLCH PAWB!

We are also delighted about the progression of our Reserve team this season. Although their results may look disappointing the team is blooding our young players and it is a delight to see a crop of school age players take the field and perform with such enthusiasm. Alan Roberts has done a superb job to bring this young team together and the entertainment which we get in every game is such a good watch. We would be delighted to see as many of you as possible to watch these youngsters when they next play at Maes Tegid.

Get to know The Cofi’s | Bala Town vs Caernarfon Town

Club Name: Caernarfon Town Established: 1937 Home: The Oval Nickname: The Canaries/The Cofi’s

Caernarfon Town are a professional Football Club who compete in the Cymru Premier league and are classed as the Lakesiders’ closest rivals, with both clubs residing in the county Gwynedd. The club has its nickname ‘The Canaries’ because of their yellow and green strip. The first known football club in Caernarfon was known as ‘Caernarvon Wanderers’ and was formed in 1876, and were the first North West Wales to enter the FA Cup and were defeated 10-1 by Stoke. However in 1891 the club went out of existence, until 1894 where several of the former players began a new club called ‘Caernarvon Ironopolis’ which would not last very long, as a dispute with the North Wales Coast League lead to the club folding in 1903. The current club was formed in 1937 and entered the Welsh League North Division One, and went on to win the league in 1946-47 & 1965-66. However, problems ensued again as the club withdrew from the league in 1976, only to be re-formed 12 months later. The club bounced back with two Championship wins in each of its next two seasons! Caernarfon were welcomed into the League of Wales in 1995 after years of playing over the border, and reached the semi-final of both the League Cup and North Wales Coast FA Cup in their first season back playing in Wales. In 2009, the club’s future was in doubt with the finances at an all time low, however after resignations from the directors, a group of current club officials and supporters took over running of the club, and put a plan in place to keep the club in existence. They were promoted to the Welsh Premier League for the 2018-19 season after being in the Cymru Alliance since the 2008-2009 season, as they managed 65 points in 28 games to win the league. In their first season back in the top division, they managed to finish in 4th place and Qualified for the Europa League Play-Offs. However, the Cofi’s would end their season with defeat to Cardiff Met in the Europa League Play-Offs with a 3-2 score line at The Oval.

Caernarfon Town Form The Cofis have had mixed fortunes so far this season, with eight wins, three draws and eight defeats in their first 19 games of the season. After recruiting well in the Summer, the Cofis might of expected to be slightly higher in the table than they are right now, however they currently sit in 7th place; one point away from the Nomads in 6th place, despite there being a gap of just seven points between 2nd and 7th place in the league table. Their previous six games is a good indicator of how their season has been so far, with three wins, one draw and two defeats. The Cofi’s ended November with a 2-1 away win at Haverfordwest County, before being defeated by a 90th minute winner against Penybont at the Oval as Keane Watts made it 2-1, to give the Cofi’s the worst start to December. A thrilling game would follow on the 17th of December, as Aberystwyth Town were the visitors to the Oval. The Cofi faithful would see their team go behind mid-way through the second half to a score of 3-2, after two quick-fire penalties from Aber would see them take the lead. However, Danny Gosset would fire his side level on 68 minutes, which rescued a point for the Cofi’s after a six goal thriller at the Oval. Another thrilling game would follow just four days later, as Caernarfon visited the Essity Stadium to take on Flint Town. The Cofi’s stormed to a 2-0 lead after 22 minutes, just to be pegged back a couple minutes later, however just before the end of the half, Caernarfon looked to have finished the game off with two goals in five minutes to make it 4-1 at half-time. Caernarfon ended up with the three points, despite the hosts scoring two goals in two minutes to finish the game with a 4-3 score-line. Caernarfon would then restart their league campaign after the COVID break with a 3-1 win over Cefn Druids, and most recently fall to a 4-0 home defeat to the current league leaders, as The New Saints continued their fantastic form.

The Cofi’s Dangerman | Bala Town vs Caernarfon Town Name: Darren Thomas Position: Midfielder Caernarfon’s top goal scorer this season; Darren Thomas looks to be the Cofis biggest threat tonight, having scored five goals so far from an attacking midfield position, and already has one more goal compared to last season’s tally. Thomas is on course to beat his previous best goal scoring tally of seven goals in 25 appearances during the COVID stricken season of 2019-20, where the season ended in late March due to the pandemic. The 34 year old will look to carry on his goal scoring today or dictating the play in midfielder, either way he will most likely be Caernarfon’s biggest threat today should he be on his game.

Previous Meeting | Caernarfon Town 3 vs 0 Bala Town

Bad day at the office for the Lakesiders. After securing European Football for another season last weekend, we were tasked with a trip to The Oval to face Gwynedd Rivals Caernarfon Town on Tuesday night (04/05/21) with nothing other than pride to play for between the two sides, as league positions are almost done and dusted with the possibility of the hosts climbing as high as 5th in the table, depending on the last two results. The game got underway at The Oval, and our shotstopper Alex Ramsay was called into action early on, as he had to stop a free kick from around 25 yards out. Mike Hayes won the home side a corner with a deflected shot 10 minutes in, and from the corner the hosts took the lead. Max Cleworth was unmarked inside the box and quite easily headed home from the corner to give his side the lead. Paulo Mendes then tried to double the home side’s lead with a shot from outside the box, thankfully his effort sailed over the stand. The hosts had a penalty shout against Anthony Stephens as he was deemed to have handled the ball, but the referee dismissed the appeals.

Mendes again tried his luck this time from inside the box, but his effort hit the outside of the net. Chris Venables almost equalised for us in added time, yet Lewis Brass leaped across his goal to push the header away and the hosts were able to clear. The hosts doubled their lead in added time with Max Cleworth grabbing his second from a corner again, although the linesman had put his flag up with no explanation and the goal was given. The whistle then went for half-time with us behind by two goals. Seemed the celebrations of European qualification had took it’s toll on the lads over the weekend... Colin Caton made a half-time change with Steven Leslie coming on to replace Jack Mackreth. The second half got underway, and within 10 minutes of the restart we were 3-0 down. Mike Hayes won a free kick on the edge of the box, which Sion Bradley stepped up to take and he slotted the ball into the bottom right hand corner to further extend his side’s advantage. Antony Kay came close to grabbing a goal back on the hour mark, but his shot from the edge of the area was dragged wide of the post.

Previous Meeting | Caernarfon Town 3 vs 0 Bala Town Will Evans also came close, but he couldn’t direct his header between the posts as the ball went out for a goal kick. A few good crosses came in from the right hand side from Andrew Burns, but Lewis Brass was always alert to come and collect the ball.

Despite there being three minutes of added time at the end of the second half, we left The Oval empty handed as the full-time whistle went. A bad day at the office for the Lakesiders, but having just secured European qualification it was understandable with nothing now to play for with just two games remaining.

Antony Kay was denied a goal from his header after it was cleared off the line by a Caernarfon defender. Really summed up our luck throughout the contest.

Steve Leslie | Bala Town vs Caernarfon Town NAME: STEVE LESLIE POSITION: MIDFIELDER NATIONALITY: SCOTTISH FORMER CLUBS:

Leslie joined the Lakesiders in July 2019 having played at Newtown for the previous year. The 34 year old has played for a large number of clubs, starting with a three year scholarship programme at Shrewsbury Town, before signing a one year professional contract in 2006. He would go on to stay at Shrewsbury for another six year, making 100+ appearances and netting seven times, but would head out on loan to Hereford United twice during his time at Shrewsbury. In January of 2012, Leslie would leave Shrewsbury by mutual consent and joined then Conference League side Wrexham AFC. He would only make 13 appearances and score once during his short time at the club. The Midfielder would join AFC Telford United and made 39 appearances and scored four goals, but would only stay there for a year, until he made a move to Worcester City. Leslie would then emigrate to Australia in March 2014 for a short period to become a coach, before returning to the UK to play for Worcester City once more before moving to Rushall Olympic later in the year. He would join Solihull Moors for the 15-16 season, and helped them to the National League North title as he made 11 appearances and scored two goals, but would then have short spells at Sutton Coldfield Town and Corby Town during the next two years. Leslie would then make the move to the Cymru Premier with Newtown after a successful trial in July 2018, and would go on to score seven goals in 30 appearances for the Robins, before makingthe switch to Maes Tegid in July of 2019. Leslie has so far made 75+ appearances in all competitions for the Lakesiders, and provided a crucial assist for Chris Venables during our Europa League First Qualifying Round in the 2020/21 season, which sent the Lakesiders through to the Second Qualifying Round for the first time in the club’s history! So far this season, Leslie has made 13 appearances in the league, and has played 764 minutes across those 13 appearances.

In the Reserves’ first and only season playing in the Wrexham Area Reserves & Colts Division, they would finish 10th out of 14 teams in the league, however after the COVID 19 pandemic hit and put a halt on our lives, their season was curtailed on May 19th 2020 and their final league position would be determined on an unweighted points per game method. Fast forward to now, and our Reserves enter a new league system, now playing in the FAW Reserve League North West, and have seen many new players arrive and many players depart. Lakesiders earn hard-fought victory against the Robins A return to Maes Tegid saw a return to the top six for the Lakesiders as Will Evans’ firsthalf effort was enough for victory against Newtown. Evans opened the scoring on the stroke of half-time to help us on our way to our first victory of 2022. In a game of little chances for either side, Newtown struggled to break down the Bala backline as the Lakesiders held on with a disciplined second-half performance to see us into the top six. Mendes misses early chance We were nearly off to the most perfect start to 2022 at Maes Tegid when Lassana Mendes was played through one-on-one two minutes into proceedings. But he couldn’t give his effort enough lift to beat the approaching Dave Jones. It was then Newtown who had an opportunity at scoring the opener when Aaron Williams rose to head the ball towards goal, but instead, his effort went over the bar.

Shannon denied from close range The Lakesiders continued to look most likely to break the deadlock as we looked dangerous with every attack. Oliver Southern provided a fantastic opportunity for Ollie Shannon to do exactly that with just over thirty minutes gone, but Jones managed to deny him with an impressive save. It was then Shannon again who saw his effort saved by Jones when the midfielder managed to burst into the area and unleash an attempt that was straight down the goalkeeper’s throat. Exceptional Evans finish gives us the lead With his first opportunity of the game, Evans produced a wonderful finish to giveus a deserved lead. Kieran Smith provided the assist with his cushioned header for Evans to blast home on an angle just before the half-time whistle. Scrappy second-half challenges Lakesiders Having taken the lead just before the break, there was a lot of pressure on the Lakesiders to put in a professional second-half performance tomake the most of our lead. The Robins did up their tempo in an effort to bring the scores back level but struggled however to break down our back four.

Previous Match Report | Bala Town 1 vs 0 Newtown Several stoppages occurred amongst injuries – one of which saw Dave Edwards leave the field - with our players giving everything on the field for the three points. It looked as if the Lakesiders were soon to be awarded once more for their hard work when Shannon slotted the ball home following some neat build-up play. However, the linesman’s flag was up to spoil the party as Bala were forced to continue to protect our lead. Lakesiders back to winning ways We did however manage to hold onto our slender lead to secure a much-needed victory displaying great character amongst a gritty second-half performance. This victory sees us climb into the top six in fifth position while gaining three points on our opposition as we now sit only four points behind Newtown in second.
