A very warm welcome to our visitors today after their long journey from Haverfordwest. Your arrival will be met by a Maes Tegid ground which is buzzing after the amazing Welsh Cup scoreline of last weekend. Record books were torn up after the 17 goals went in and certainly nobody present last Saturday could remember any score remotely close to the figure which was racked up. We await the 3rd Round draw with keen anticipation.As we are all very much aware it will be a hugely different picture which will be painted today. We face a much changed Haverfordwest team who have started the season on a positive note and will present a fierce challenge. It was a much improved performance when we travelled to Aberystwyth last Tuesday evening and came away with a fine 1.0 victory. The tight scoreline did not reflect the dominance of the game which Bala had and the only disappointment was that more goals were not added. If the tempo and energy of that performance can be maintained then we should be in with an excellent chance of securing the invaluable 3 points on offer today.

My thanks also as always to our Club Sponsors who are the lifeblood of our Club. Get to know Cardiff Met | Bala Town vs Haverfordwest

Club Name: Haverfordwest County AFC Established: 1899 Home: The Bridge Meadow Stadium Nickname: The Bluebirds

The club was founded in 1899 and was variously known as Haverfordwest FC, Haverfordwest Town, and Haverfordwest Athletic before adopting the current name, and plays at the Bridge Meadow Stadium, Haverfordwest, which accommodates 2,000 spectators.[1] The teams’ first choice strip is blue shirts, shorts, and socks and the second choice strip white shirts, black shorts, and black socks. Haverfordwest Football Club was formed in 1899, and was quickly renamed Haverfordwest Town in 1901. In 1936, the name of Haverfordwest Athletic was adopted and the first team switched to the Welsh Football League, leaving a reserve side in the Pembrokeshire League. In 1956 they gained promotion to the Welsh League Premier Division, having won the First Division title. The present name of Haverfordwest County was adopted and the club embarked on a long stay in the top flight. Disaster struck in 1975–76 when the club won only four league matches and was relegated to the First Division. Promotion eluded them until 1980 and they went on to take the championship in their first season back, losing only five games. Haverfordwest County were founder members of the League of Wales in 1992–93 but their stay was brief. Having accepted an offer which involved the redevelopment of their Bridge Meadow ground, and unable to find a suitable alternative ground of League of Wales standard, they resigned from the League in 1994. The decision to take a long-term view was fully vindicated by their return to the League of Wales three years later. The league has since changed its name to the Welsh Premier League. In 2004 Haverfordwest County qualified for Europe via league position in the League of Wales and played in the UEFA cup losing over two legs 4–1 to Fimleikafelag Hafnarfjardar of Iceland. In the 2010–11 season Haverfordwest County were involuntarily relegated from the Welsh Premier League for the first time. On 5 May 2015, they were promoted back to the Welsh Premier League following an unlikely 5–0 victory against Aberdare Town.

Analysis of Cardiff Met | Bala Town vs Haverfordwest FORM The Bluebirds completed their pre-season with a 3-2 defeat to Merthyr Town who play in the Southern League Premier South; before returning to competitive action with a home tie against Goytre United in the Nathaniel MG Cup, and a comfortable 3-0 win saw them through to the next round of the cup. Next up for the Bluebirds was their Cymru Premier opener against Caernarfon Town at The Oval. A Friday night match which was televised on Sgorio saw the Cofi’s score two late goals to hand the visitors their first defeat of the season. It’s been a tough start to the season for the South Wales club, having only picked up a point in their first four games of the season, with their only point coming against Cardiff Met in their second match of the season, where it ended 0-0 at the Bridge Meadow Stadium. Despite only picking up a point so far, they’ve only been defeated by a one goal margin in their previous two defeats, with the first being a 1-0 defeat to The New Saints who had an unimaginable run in the Europa Conference League this past summer. The second and most recent defeat came to Barry Town in mid-week where they were defeated 3-2 in a very entertaining game, however they sit 2nd from bottom after four games and need to start picking up points soon! Analysis of Cardiff Met | Bala Town vs Haverfordwest KEY PLAYER NAME: HENRY JONES POSITION: MIDFIELDER After three seasons playing for the black and white of Bala Town, Henry made the move to Haverfordwest County this previous summer, and will likely be one of the key players for the visitors today! A player known for creating the magical moments will look to play his team-mates in on goal while also creating a few chances for himself, with his fast feet and unbelievable trickery. I’m sure most of you remember his rabona cross to assist Steven Tames three seasons ago, which was a moment that went viral on social media, for the audaciousness to pull of such a skill, and create a goal at the end of it. Despite not registering a goal or assist in competitive action as of yet, he will be hungry to make an impact against his former side today!

KEY PLAYER NAME: BEN FAWCETT POSITION: FORWARD Ben Fawcett joined Haverfordwest in 2018 and has since become one of the best young talents in the league. The 20 year old made 7 goal contributions last season, and has a lot more to give to the Bluebirds this season. This season; he’s already notched in two goals, with both strikes coming against Barry Town in their 3-2 defeat at Jenner Park, however his second goal of the night was something special! A strike from around 25 yards out caught the Barry keeper off guard, which gave Fawcett’s side the lead on the night just before half-time. We expect Fawcett to be a threat today after his two goals in his previous match, and will look to build on his goal contributions!

Late drama again as the points are shared.

Steve Leslie tried his luck from range, but the midfielder couldn’t wrap his foot around the ball, as his shot sailed over the bar.

After an 11 day absence from the Cymru Premier, the Lakesiders were back again, with a trip down South to face off against Haverfordwest County AFC, aiming for redemption following the defeat a couple weeks ago, which would hand The Town their only loss of the season so far.

On the 10th minute mark, Bala were given a massive let off, as Danny Williams received the ball in the Lakesider’s box, had time to turn and shoot, but dragged his shot wide, big opportunity for the home side to take the lead.

Two changes were made to the side following the previous game away to Flint Town, as John Rushton and Anthony Stephens would come in for Alex Ramsay and Jonny Spittle respectively. The game got underway at the Bridge Meadow Stadium with Will Evans coming close in the early stages, after a long throw into the box went into the direction of our number 8, who hooked the ball over the bar. A minute later, Haverfordwest had an opportunity to take the lead, but the shot was straight at Rushton from Danny Williams.

Sean Smith put in a brilliant challenge in the box to deny a shot on goal from a Haverfordwest player on 20 minutes. Another chance for the home side, as Kieran Lewis passed through to Jack Wilson, but his shot went straight into the hands of Rushton. Raul Correia came very close to taking the lead on the 25th minute, as he met Leslie’s cross a few yards out, but his glancing header went just wide of the post. Haverfordwest had another great chance to take the lead, just 10 minutes from the end of the half, as one of their forwards made a driving run towards the byline on the left hand side, but his

The fourth official held up the board for added time, which seemed to show 20 minutes of added time, however he definitely meant 2 minutes. A half with little clear cut chances, however the home side looked the better team during the first 45, with a couple opportunities to take the lead through Danny Williams and Jack Wilson. It was all to play for in the second half! The second half got underway, and it took a couple minutes for either team to get going. A big chance for the Lakesiders came just after the hour mark, as Ollie Shannon played a ball into the feet of Venables, the skipper was able to turn inside the box, but took a heavy touch which the keeper then pounced on. A break in play then came as the keeper was down injured receiving some treatment following the collision with Venables. Lassana Mendes came close to breaking the deadlock on the 69th minute, but his long range shot was saved well by the injured keeper, to push the ball out for a corner.

Finally, on the 84th minute, the deadlock was broken! A move that started with a lovely flick from Henry Jones into the path of Leslie, who made a driving run towards the byline, he put the cross into the front post, where Will Evans met the ball first infront of the defender, and hit the ball home to make it 1-0 to the Lakesiders! The home side came close with 2 minutes to go, but their shot on goal was dragged wide of the post, with more pressure being pilled on looking for a late equaliser. Just seconds before the board was shown for added time, Haverfordwest would equalise… A ball into Jack Wilson in the box, with time to take a touch, he hit a shot towards goal, and Rushton wasn’t able to get a full hand to the ball, as it squirmed past the keeper to give the home side a late equaliser. The points were shared, however it would be two points dropped in the grand scheme of things, with the Lakesiders now in 2nd place, 5 points behind the league leader The New Saints. With our next fixture being against the league leaders next Saturday (7/11/20) in the re-scheduled game following the postponement of the previous fixture at Maes Tegid after floodlight failure.

Chris Venables | Bala Town vs Haverfordwest NAME: CHRIS VENABLES POSITION: FORWARD NATIONALITY: WELSH FORMER CLUBS: SHREWSBURY TOWN YOUTH TEAM CAERSWS FC 2003-2007 / WELSHPOOL TOWN 2007-2008 ABERYSTWYTH TOWN 2008-2009 / LLANELLI 2009-2013 ABERYSTWYTH TOWN 2013-2016

Chris Venables joined the Lakesiders in 2016, having had success at former club Aberystwyth Town, where he picked up two golden boots in the 2013/14 and 2014/15 season, scoring 20 and 28 goals respectively. In his first season with the Lakesiders, he picked up another golden boot, making it a hat-trick of golden boots! Venners has spent his whole senior footballing career in the Welsh Pyramid, however after playing for the Caersws Youth Team, he was picked up by Shrewsbury Town in the Football League, and trained with their youth team, although he would return to Caersws where he would play for four years, until his move to Welshpool Town. Chris has been called up to the Wales C Squad on numerous occasions, while also scoring against England C Squad at Jenner Park during one of his caps for his country. This past season, Venables would join the Cymru Premier 200 club, after netting 1 of 3 goals against Barry Town in a 4-1 win, which also confirmed the Lakesiders European status for another season, as we qualified for the Europa Conference League.

The 36 year old is not done just yet, having collected the golden boot for another time last season, and will look to regain his golden boot this season, despite missing the previous three matches through suspension.

Previous Match Report | Aberystwyth vs Bala Town

First Three Points Of The Season! End-to-end from the very start. Both teams looked to set the pace early at Park Avenue, with Aberystwyth looking to counter quickly from every Bala attack. It was us that the first chance fell to when Dave Edwards had the chance to head the ball goalwards from a Lassana Mendes cross, however, his effort was straight at the goalkeeper. Again, Bala attacked with every opportunity, and with Paul Rutherford making his first league start for the Lakesiders, he was keen to make an impact. He set up Edwards with another opportunity moments later yet this time the former Wales international couldn’t direct his shot on target. Steve Leslie goes close the free-kick! Back in the starting line-up and aiming to make an impact himself, Steve Leslie had the perfect opportunity to do so from an early free-kick just outside the area for Bala. He stepped up to take it and his effort hit the side netting, teasing theLakesiders fans who thought we had found the opener.

They all count! After two league games without a goal, the Lakesiders finally broke their duck, through an Alex Darlington own goal following a dangerous Steve Leslie cross. Edwards was awaiting patiently for the cross that was flashed across goal, only for it to be turned in by a Seasiders man, it was the least Bala deserved however after a promising start. Resilient defending on show A backline of Calum Woods, Nathan Peate, Johnny Spittle and Ollie Shannon began the game for the Lakesiders and they rewarded Colin Caton’s faith in them by displaying dominative defending. They kept the hosts’ chances to a few as we held on to our lead going into half-time after an impressive opening 45 minutes. Mendes hits the woodwork! Following half-time, Balacame out the blocks all guns blazing. The midfield combined well as we looked to break down Aberystwyth’s resistance who looked content to remain in the game at the time being. The hosts did well to limit Bala’s chances to efforts from range, although Mendes almost made them pay for inviting his effort when he struck the bar from 20 yards out.

Previous Match Report | Aberystwyth vs Bala Town Comfortable and confident on our way to victory Despite Aberystwyth trying everything they could to test Bala’s defence, we remained strong and assured as the Lakesiders pushed towards victory with our one-goal advantage. Edwards, who was playing a leading role in attack in the absence of Chris Venables, nearly got a goal of his own when he found space to strike towards goal late on, only for his shot to lack the speed and power to beat Gregor Zabret. Three points in the bag! Oliver Southern cleared the ball from a lastminute effort to rescue a point by the Seasiders to ensure the Lakesiders crossed the line victorious and earn our first three points of the season. In what was hard-fought yet relatively comfortable victory, Bala dominated large parts of the ninety minutes and made plenty of chances that on another day could have seen us clinch the win earlier. However, all that matters is that victory was secured and the Lakesiders were finally off the board!

Bala Town will now look to take this momentum into the weekend when the Lakesiders face Brymbo in the Welsh Cup, this Saturday 4th of September, with kick-off at 2:00pm. In the Reserves’ first and only season playing in the Wrexham Area Reserves & Colts Division, they would finish 10thout of 14 teams in the league, however after the COVID 19 pandemic hit and put a halt on our lives, their season was curtailed on May 19th 2020 and their final league position would be determined on an unweighted points per game method. Fast forward to now, and our Reserves enter a new league system, now playing in the FAW Reserve League North West, and have seen many new players arrive and many players depart. The Reserves kicked off their league campaign to Denbigh Town Reserves on Friday 30th of July at Maes Tegid, and what a cracker of a game it was! Despite leading 2-0 until the 63rd minute, the match ended in a 3-3 draw with the visitors netting twice in the last five minutes of normal time. However, there was more drama to come as Llion Thomas scored his second of the game in the fourth minute of added time to claw back a point.

Next up was Holywell Town Reserves at Maes Tegid on the 6th of August. Under the floodlights of Maes Tegid; 15 minutes into the game and Geth Edwards gave our Reserves the lead with a low driven free kick past the wall and into the net. Although just shy of the half hour mark, an own goal from Steff Williams gave the visitors the equaliser. Then 15 minutes into the second half, a shot from distance from a Holywell defender managed to creep its way under Dom Walker in goal and eventually gave the visitors all three points. The Reserves then travelled away to St Asaph on Friday 13th of August, in a bid to pick up their first three points of the season. However, the match ended 2-1 with Cai Aykroyd scoring the only goal of the game, as St Asaph took the three points. Next in store was Conwy Borough Reserves, under the lights at Maes Tegid on Friday 20th of August, and what a game it turned out to be! The Reserves went down 4-0 early in the first half, however the deficit was halved by half-time as Cai Aykroyd netted two goals before the break. The visitors grabbed another goal early in the second half, before Geth Edwards replied with a goal of his own to make the score 5-3. Cai Aykroyd then grabbed his hat-trick to make the score 5-4, until the visitors put another one into the net to almost finish the game off. Yet there was still time for more drama, as Geth Edwards scored his second with over 20 minutes to go! Will Hughes then levelled the score in an unbelievable match, with a beautiful header into the net to complete a brilliant comeback! The match finished 6-6 in the end, but what a game it was to witness.

Bala Town Reserves | Bala Town vs Haverfordwest

Most recently, the Reserves took on Llanrwst United Reserves at Maes Tegid, and again came some late drama! A match that saw 6 goals, a missed penalty, a red card and a very late equaliser ended in a 3-3 draw, now meaning our Reserves sit in 10th place in the FAW Reserve League North West.

Make sure you don’t miss anymore of the Reserves, as they return to Maes Tegid on the 17th of September to take on Llangefni Town Reserves with kick off at 7:30pm!
