CROESO NOL! It’s almost impossible to believe that I’m actually writing these notes after such a long time that we all have not been allowed to attend First Team League fixtures at Maes Tegid. After nearly 18 months we have finally had all the restrictions lifted and we can warmly welcome you all back to Maes Tegid. It has been a traumatic and deeply worrying period of time for us all and I can only hope that the pandemic has not had a serious affect on all of you. It is doubtful that we will ever experience such an unprecedented situation again and it certainly is not one which anyone would like to face again. The impact on the Football Club has been severe but by an extraordinary amount of hard work we have pulled through and remain a powerful force in Welsh football. Since the last time we were allowed spectators into Maes Tegid we have had a truncated 2019/20 season and a stop/ start 2020/21 season. However the silver lining has been the European Qualification at the end of both seasons and a famous victory in that campaign in Valletta, Malta. We have produced an excellent brand of football and have finished 3rd in the JD Cymru Premier in both those seasons – a truly excellent achievement. And now we embark on yet another Welsh Premier season. It will be Colin Caton’s 19th year as First Team Manager, a truly amazing

statistic and one which surely must be breaking some serious historical records before very much longer! We believe that we have continued to strengthen year on year and begin our campaign in the belief that the squad assembled this season is the strongest we have ever fielded. Of course only time will tell and this afternoon’s match will be the first serious test of whether those ambitions will be realised. It will be a very difficult opening fixture against a team who upset all the pundits last year with their excellent performances and a top 6 finish. They narrowly failed to qualify for Europe and have further added to their squad during the close season. It will be a fascinating encounter and one which we are all looking forward to with great anticipation. Please can I also ask you to take note of our Reserve Team. They have a tremendous group of players who all pull together and seriously enjoy their football. They are at home next Friday evening against Conwy with a 7.30pm kick off and are well worth a watch. Exciting, exhilarating football for you to enjoy! Welcome back to each and every one of you this afternoon – it’s brilliant to have you back at Maes Tegid. Diolch Pawb. Nigel.

Get to know Penybont FC | Bala Town vs Penybont FC

Club Name: Penybont Football Club Established: 1920 Home: SDM Glass Stadium (3000 Capacity) Nickname: Bont

Penybont are a semi-professional side who until 2013 were known as Bridgend Town and play their home matches at the SDM Glass Stadium, which has an artificial grass pitch which was installed in 2014. The Bridgend side announced their application for a Football Association of Wales Domestic Lincense for the Cymru Premier in 2015, meaning they were committed to improving their facilities in order to make the club applicable for promotion to the top division. The Bont were then promoted to the Cymru Premier in 2019, after beating off promotion rivals Cambrian & Clydach Vale B.&G.C. and Cwmamman United AFC. Penybont finished in 4th place in last season’s Cymru Premier season, meaning they earned a European Play-Off place, where they would eventually face 7th place Newtown in the SemiFinal, however a late goal from Newtown dumped Penybont out of the Play-Off, bringing an end to their season.

Analysis of Penybont Football Club | Bala Town vs Penybont FC FORM Penybont have had a good pre-season ahead of the start of the Cymru Premier season, winning three, drawing one and losing one throughout their five pre-season friendlies, while also competing in the Nathaniel MG Cup. They kicked off their pre-season with their only loss throughout their friendlies, which was Southern League Division One South side Paulton Rovers, as they were beaten 2-1 with their only goal coming from Lewis Clutton. Penybont then went and scored 11 goals and conceded three in their next two friendlies against Pontypridd and Cambrian & Clydach. Fellow Cymru Premier side Aberystwyth were next for the Bont, and both sides shared a goal each in a 1-1 draw. To wrap up their pre-season, Penybont put five past Worcester in a 5-1 win, where new signing James Waite netted a brace while Kane Owen, Lewis Clutton and Sam Snaith also grabbed a goal. The Nathaniel MG Cup tie was next for Penybont, where they were drawn against Aberystwyth who they’d not long played in a pre-season friendly! Penybont seemed to be going through with a single goal from Sam Snaith, only for Aber to reply in the 82nd minute to take the tie to penalties! Aber went on to win 5-4 on penalties after seven penalties each, and Penybont were subsequently knocked out of the cup.

Analysis of Penybont Football Club | Bala Town vs Penybont FC KEY PLAYER NAME: MAEL DAVIES POSITION: MIDFIELDER Winner of Young Player Of The Season; Mael Davies will be no doubt one of Penybont’s danger men in today’s game. The Midfielder netted five times and assisted his team mates on three occasions last season. Davies is one not to shy away from shooting from distance, with three of his five goals coming from outside the area! The 22 year also won Goal Of The Month for April this year, with a well placed shot from outside the area against Haverfordwest County, with the move starting with Davies in his own half and dancing past an opponent before putting the ball out wide, before receiving the ball around 25 yards out and hitting a pin point ball into the bottom left hand corner. He will definitely be one to watch today!

KEY PLAYER NAME: KANE OWEN POSITION: DEFENDER The Captain Kane Owen was named in the Cymru Premier Team of The Season last time round, and rightly so. His performances from left back were tremendous last season, scoring five goals and assisting his team mates six times. Owen will be a huge threat down the left hand side, putting crosses into the box and will want to hit the ground running for his side’s first league game this season.

Late Nathan Peate header captures the three points! After a disappointing loss in mid-week against Gwynedd rivals Caernarfon Town, we’d welcome Penybont to Maes Tegid in our final home match of the JD Cymru Premier season! Following securing our Uefa Europa Conference League place last weekend, we’d be attempting to finish our season on a high with just two games remaining. On the other hand, Penybont are preparing for their Play-Off match in hope of qualifying for the Uefa Europa Conference League. We got underway at a wet and windy Maes Tegid with a good attacking move from Bala, as Andrew Burns received the ball down the right and put a peach of a ball towards the danger area, but the intended target Will Evans just couldn’t reach, and the ball went out for a goal kick. Nathan Peate then got on the end of a Sean Smith ball from the left hand side, but Peate’s header wasn’t powerful enough to beat former goalkeeper Ashley Morris.

With five minutes remaining of the first half, Chris Venables attempted to put us in the lead, however his shot from inside the box went wayward of the goal. A minute was added on at the end of the half, and Raul Correia almost put us ahead with a header, but his effort was not powerful enough to beat Morris in goal, and then the final whistle came. A half with a few chances for both sides, yet it was the keepers who took the limelight with a couple of great saves to keep the score level, making it all to play for in the second half. The second half got underway, and we received a free kick right on the edge of the box, however Steven Leslie’s effort went right into the wall and the visitors could clear. A bit of defending to do for our defence, as Nathan Peate blocked a dangerous cross out for a corner, which thankfully came to nothing.

Previous Meeting | Bala Town 1 vs 0 Penybont FC Raul Correia looked to dribble past all challenges on his way into the Penybont box, but collided with Penybont defender Yakubu and the visitors gained possession. Alex Ramsay was called into action on 20 minutes, as he got across to his near post to save the shot of Nathan Wood. Penybont keeper Ashley Morris pulled off a stunning save to deny Steven Leslie a brilliant goal, as Morris tipped Leslie’s volley on to the bar and out for a corner, despite the shot looking like a certain goal! Down the other end, Alex Ramsay also pulled off a stunning save as a shot from outside the box seemed to move in the air, and our shotstopper had to readjust and save the strike to save us from going behind. After Sean Smith received treatment for an injury, he ended up staying on the pitch and keeping the score level with a brilliant goal line clearance!

Again Sean Smith did brilliantly to recover defensively and put a brilliant challenge in to take the ball away from a Penybont forward, in what would have been a real goal scoring opportunity for the visitors. Five minutes of added time were announced at the end of the second half, and only two minutes into the allotted time, there was a breakthrough… With 92 minutes on the clock, Nathan Peate climbed highest to meet the cross from Lassana Mendes, and headed right into the top right hand corner! A brilliant header, with no chance for Ashley Morris to make a save, as we went 1-0 up with just three minutes remaining! That was the final action of the match, as we wrapped up our penultimate game in the league season! A brilliant way to finish off our last home game of the season, with a late late winner!

Dave Edwards joined the Lakesiders in June this year, signing from his boyhood club Shrewsbury Town after his desire to play part-time football. Edwards has had quite the career after making his professional debut in 2003, making over 550 club appearances while playing in League One right up to the Premier League, in which he spent three seasons in the top division with Wolverhampton Wanderers. The Wales international has also been capped 43 times for his country from 2007 to 2017, while also featuring in all three group matches in Euro 2016, where Wales would eventually reach the semi final. In Edwards’ first game for the Lakesiders, he came on as a second half substitute against Airbus UK in a friendly, and netted a brace within the first 15 minutes of his debut! He also started in both of our 1-0 defeats to Larne FC in the Europa Conference League back in July. Off the pitch, Edwards does a lot of charity work even launching his own charity; The Little Rascals Foundation which aims to help children with disabilities, and raised just under £13,000 in its launch event in 2017. He was also the first active professional football to endorse the ‘Offside Trust’ which was founded after the reveal of the ‘United Kingdom Football Sexual Abuse Scandal’ in 2016. In 2017, Edwards launched his autobiography, called ‘Living My Dream’ in which he gives a behind the scenes account of his comeback from a serious injury in January 2016, ready to be fit for Euro 2016 with Wales.

Ramsay The Hero In The Penalty Shootout! The Lakesiders returned to competitive action on Saturday (7th of August) with a Nathaniel MG Cup Second Round tie against Flint Town United. This tie would be a repeat of our Second Round tie back in October 2018, where the Lakesiders breezed past the Silkmen by netting six goals at Cae-Y-Castell to progress to the Third Round. Colin Caton would name two new signings in his 16 man squad, with Oliver Southern and Chris Sang making the bench following their signings announcements just ahead of kick off. Walker-Rice wins a penalty mid-way through the first half - Dave Edwards converts the spot kick Just minutes after having a goal disallowed for a very late offside call, Dave Edwards had the chance to convert a spot kick after Walker-Rice was brought down inside the box. Walker- Rice; who made a lively start to the match, made a dashing run into the box from the left hand side and was brought down inside the box, leading to Dave Edwards having the chance to score his first competitive goal for the club! Edwards stepped up to the spot and rifled the ball into the bottom left hand corner, giving us the lead on 23 minutes! Sean Smith was forced to come off in the first half, after a crunching tackle with a Flint defender left him worse off and after attempting to run the injury off he could not continue, with Oliver Southern coming on to make his debut. With 10 minutes to go of the first half, Flint were also forced into a change after Brad Bauress and the Flint keeper collided after a great cross into the box from Walker-Rice, which left both players down on the ground. Thankfully for us, Bauress was able to carry on, but Ryan Woods; the Flint keeper needed to be replaced by former Bala goalkeeper John Rushton. Threat of an equaliser came shortly after the restart Just two minutes into the second half, and Flint almost grabbed an equaliser with a header that rattled the crossbar, which thankfully ended up going over the bar. Substitutes were made shortly into the second half, with Chris Sang coming on to also make his debut for the club as he replaced Danny WalkerRice. Flint made a change of their own, bringing on new signing Danny Harrison for Telor Williams. Flint had another chance to equalise, this time a fierce strike from a Flint attacker had to be saved by Alex Ramsay just shy of the hour mark. A goal was coming, but from which side... Into the last quarter of normal time, and both sides were pushing for a goal with Ben Maher coming close for the hosts as his free kick just creeped wide of the goal. Will Evans then tried his luck on his weaker foot, but his shot from the edge of the box just trickled past the post, as we entered into the last 10 minutes.

Previous Match Report | Flint Town vs Bala Town Just a minute after Will’s effort at one end, Flint go and equalise down the other end. Ben Nash got on the end of a cross into the back post, and headed the ball past Ramsay in goal to make penalties a strong possibility to determine the winner of this tie! Both sides then had chances of their own in the final five minutes to try and steal the win, with Alex Jones coming close for the hosts with a shot from inside the box, thankfully his effort went wide. Chris Sang; on his debut, had a golden chance at grabbing the win if it wasn’t for John Rushton who sent Sang’s header over the bar for a corner. No winner in 90 minutes - Penalties were to decide who progressed After 90 minutes of football, penalties were to decide who progressed into the 3rd Round of the Nathaniel MG Cup! Dave Edwards stepped up to take the first spot kick and his second of the game, and slotted his penalty into the net! Alex Jones stepped up for the hosts, and saw his penalty saved by Ramsay! Brad Bauress was next to take for us, and cooly put away his penalty!

Flint’s new man Danny Harrison was next, and put away his penalty for his new club! Calum Woods was our third taker, and placed his kick into the top right corner! Sam Hart was next for the hosts, and again Ramsay kept it out! Making the score 3-1 to us after three kicks each. Antony Kay had the decisive penalty, and missed! He rattled the crossbar, keeping Flint with a slim chance of staying in the Cup. Ben Maher stepped up to take the fourth penalty, only for Ramsay to keep it out again! Alex Ramsay sent Flint out of the Cup with three penalty saves! The Lakesiders will discover their Third Round opponents in the near future, and will be broadcasted to our social media handles as soon as we get information. In the Reserves’ first and only season playing in the Wrexham Area Reserves & Colts Division, they would finish 10th out of 14 teams in the league, however after the COVID 19 pandemic hit and put a halt on our lives, their season was curtailed on May 19th 2020 and their final league position would be determined on an unweighted points per game method. Fast forward to now, and our Reserves enter a new league system, now playing in the FAW Reserve League North West, and have seen many new players arrive and many players depart. The Reserves kicked off their league campaign to Denbigh Town Reserves on Friday 30th of July at Maes Tegid, and what a cracker of a game it

was! Despite leading 2-0 until the 63rd minute, the match ended in a 3-3 draw with the visitors netting twice in the last five minutes of normal time. However there was more drama to come as Llion Thomas scored his second of the game in the fourth minute of added time to claw back a point. Next up was Holywell Town Reserves at Maes Tegid on the 6th of August. Under the floodlights of Maes Tegid; 15 minutes into the game and Geth Edwards gave our Reserves the lead with a low driven free kick past the wall and into the net. Although just shy of the half hour mark, an own goal from Steff Williams gave the visitors the equaliser. Then 15 minutes into the second half, a shot from distance from a Holywell defender managed to creep it’s way under Dom Walker in goal and eventually gave the visitors all three points. As you’re reading this now, the Reserves will have played their 3rd league game, with an away trip to St Asaph Reserves yesterday evening (Friday 13th of August) and will have hopefully picked up their first 3 points of the season! Make sure to come down to Maes Tegid to support our Reserves on the 20th of August as they take on Conwy Borough Reserves, with kick off scheduled for 7:30pm!

Season Preview | Bala Town vs Penybont FC

After a turbulent 2020/21 season, we now can look forward to the 2021/22 season, which will be welcomed by all hoping there is no repeat of the events last season. On the 2nd of July, the Football Association of Wales released the fixtures for the 21/22 JD Cymru Premier League season. We will kick off our league campaign on Saturday 14th of August, in the same way we ended our home league season last season with Penybont visiting Maes Tegid. August will then consist of a trip down to Jenner Park to face Barry Town, before returning home to face Cardiff Met on the 28th of August. then to finish off the month, we will travel to Aberystwyth Town in a mid-week fixture. September will only see us play two league matches, however there could be cup matches to be played. The only two league matches will see us host Haverfordwest County at home on the 11th, before travelling to the home of the Champions Connah’s Quay Nomads on the 18th. We head into a busy month of October, which will see us play five fixtures, starting with an away trip to Flint Town, before returning to Maes Tegid to welcome Cefn Druids the weekend later. A huge match as always will follow Druids, as we face a trip to The New Saints in mid-week. On the 23rd we’ll host Barry Town at Maes Tegid, then finishing the month off with a trip down to Penybont.

We could also see a busy month in November, depending on how far Colin Caton and his men get in the league cup. To start the month however, we will host Connah’s Quay Nomads in another huge match in the footballing calendar. In midweek we will then travel to Newtown before coming back to Maes Tegid to host Flint Town. However if the Lakesiders were to progress into the semi final of the Nathaniel MG League Cup, we could have a fixture to play near the end of November. The festive time of the year will see a couple of huge games, starting off with a home match against The New Saints, before the long trip down south to face Haverfordwest County at the Bridge Meadow Stadium. A week before Christmas Day, we’ll make the short trip to Cefn Druids, which will bring us up to Matchday 17. As usual, we’ll face Gwynedd rivals Caernarfon Town twice throughout the festive period, starting with the home match on Boxing day. Then to kick off the new year, and let’s face it, it can’t be any worse than the last year! We will travel to The Oval to face Caernarfon Town. We’ll then travel down to Cardiff Met on the 22nd of January, and then to finish the first month of the year, we will welcome Newtown to Maes Tegid. To conclude the First Phase of the league season, we will host Aberystwyth Town at Maes Tegid on Saturday 12th of February. However there’s a possibility of a Nathaniel MG League Cup final if we get there the weekend before the conclusion of the ‘First Phase’ of the league campaign.
