SATURDAY 3RD OCTOBER 2020

VS HAVERFORD WEST COUNTY

NIGEL’S NOTES It’s a quick return to Maes Tegid for the few of us lucky to be allowed in the ground as we welcome Premier League newcomers Haverfordwest this afternoon just 3 days after our dramatic encounter with TNS on Wednesday evening. We remain uncertain as to the outcome of that match after the floodlight failure in the 88th minute but for certain that was an excellent performance and we must count ourselves unlucky not to have recorded another winning result against TNS. Once again I hope that confidence in abundance is flowing through the team following this fine showing but the form our visitors have shown already this season will necessitate that confidence to translate into a committed display if we are to secure more valuable points.

The weather forecast for the match is non too pleasant and this will make dealing with all the Covid protocols even more difficult. It is certainly a stressful time for us all but at least we are playing football and we must thank all concerned for the work they have put in to allow these matches to take place. The games come thick and fast and next Tuesday we travel to Flint for another tough League fixture. I wish I could ask you all to be there to support us but that hope seems to be a long way away as things stand at the moment. Please continue to follow our progress on our excellent Social Media platforms.

OPPONENT - HAVERFORDWEST EST. 1899 HOME: THE BRIDGE MEADOW STADIUM ABOUT HAVERFORDWEST COUNTY Haverfordwest Football Club was formed in 1899, and was quickly renamed Haverfordwest Town in 1901. In 1936, the name of Haverfordwest Athletic was adopted and the first team switched to the Welsh Football League, leaving a reserve side in the Pembrokeshire League. In 1956 they gained promotion to the Welsh League Premier Division, having won the First Division title. The present name of Haverfordwest County was adopted and the club embarked on a long stay in the top flight. Disaster struck in 1975–76 when the club won only four league matches and was relegated to the First Division. Promotion eluded them until 1980 and they went on to take the championship in their first season back, losing only five games. In 1983 the Welsh League was reorganised to create a form of "premiership" for the leading clubs and Haverfordwest's facilities,

administration and playing record secured their admittance. In the nine years of existence of this National Division, Haverfordwest were out of the top six only once, but their way to the title was blocked by the powerful Barry Town side. Their opportunity to take the championship came in 1990, once Barry had decided to move to English non-league football. Haverfordwest County were founder members of the League of Wales in 1992–93 but their stay was brief. Having accepted an offer which involved the redevelopment of their Bridge Meadow ground, and unable to find a suitable alternative ground of League of Wales standard, they resigned from the League in 1994. The decision to take a long-term view was fully vindicated by their return to the League of Wales three years later. The league has since changed its name to the Welsh Premier League. In 2004 Haverfordwest County qualified for Europe via league position in the League of Wales and played in the UEFA cup losing over two legs 4–1 to Fimleikafelag Hafnarfjardar of Iceland. In the 2010–11 season Haverfordwest County were involuntarily relegated from the Welsh Premier League for the first time. On 5 May 2015, they were promoted back to the Welsh Premier League following an unlikely 5–0 victory against Aberdare Town.

PREVIOUS LEAGUE FIXTURE BALA TOWN 2 THE NEW SAINTS 2

A Floodlight Failure leads to abandonment of a thriller!

After our 2nd win in the league last weekend away to Penybont, The Lakesiders would welcome The New Saints to Maes Tegid in a blockbuster ďŹ xture to end off the month of September.

The Saints started the game with a lot of the possession, including a chance to take the lead after 5 minutes, but Ramsay was there to pounce on the ball in his penalty area. Antony Kay started after coming back from suspension, and came close to giving Bala the lead just 2 minutes later, after he disposessed the defender and took a shot on goal, but Harrison in goal for TNS got down well to save. Venables set Raul on his way down the wing, and managed to win a corner after holding onto the ball near the byline. The resulting corner came to Antony Kay, however his strike on goal was powered over the bar.

The Saints were called into an early substitution, as Danny Redmond was replaced by Jonathan Routledge. Bala were awarded a free kick on the left hand side, which Anthony Stephens took... his ball swinged into the box, bounced around the box and fell to Chris Venables to bundle into the net! Bala were 1-0 up before the 20th minute! The Lakesiders were well on top at this point with chances coming thick and fast, with Will trying an audacious volley from outside the box which went wide of the goal. After just half an hour... Bala extended their lead! This time, Will Evans was put through by Venables, as Will managed to hold onto the ball in the box and put in a cross towards Venables, but Jon Routledge of TNS was there to put it into his own net! Bala now 2-0 up after half an hour! Ramsay was called into action minutes later, as he got down well to save a Kwame Boateng shot, then the rebound from the save was put well over the bar. Jon Routledge nearly makes up for his mistake, but his header from the TNS corner was headed wide.

The Lakesiders were finishing the half strongly, with driving runs from Mendes who put in Kieran Smith on goak, but his shot was saved by Harrison. Venables then had a chance to extend Bala's lead even further, but his shot from outside the box went wide of the post. The whistle went to signal the end of the first half, with Bala well on top of their opposition, however The Saints did have chances of their own which could of changed the game, however it was 2-0 to Bala at the break. The second half got underway with an early corner for Bala, but came to nothing. TNS were in on goal with Leo Smith, but the linesman called for offside. Kieran Smith dispossessed a TNS midfielder and set Will on his way down the wing, Will got as far as the edge of the box and put a dangerous cross into the box towards Venables, but the cross was just infront of him. Dean Ebbe had a chance for TNS, but his header was easily saved by Ramsay. After the hour mark, TNS had pulled one back, and what a goal from Leo Smith, who saw Ramsay off his line and curled it round and over our keeper to grab a goal back. Now 2-1 to the Lakesiders with about half an hour left. The first substitution for Bala saw Henry Jones replace the injured Raul Correia. Then minutes later, new signing Liam Davies made

his first appearance for the Town after coming on for Lassana Mendes. With 15 minutes left, Will was still tracking back to defend the 1 goal lead, as he held out Kwame Boateng to win a goal kick. Nathan Peate went into the book for a foul. Bala were under pressure in the last 10 minutes with a lot of defending to do, as Jonny Spittle cleared a cross in from Leo Smith and gave away a corner. Ryan Astles came close for TNS following a header from a corner that went just over the bar. Then again, minutes later Ryan Astles came close with another header from a corner, however the referee gave another corner for TNS. With his third attempt on goal in quick succession, this time Ryan Astles struck home, a ball into the box made its way to the back post, and on the half volley, Astles hit home to level the score with only a couple minutes left of the game. However with just 2 minutes of normal time to play, the floodlights on the far side went off at Maes Tegid... After much delay, and no sign of all 4 floodlights coming back to life, the referee abandoned the game.
