NIGEL’S NOTES Welcome back or should I say welcome to the virtual viewing of this hugely important JD Cymru League fixture against our Gwynedd rivals Caernarfon Town. This fixture should have been seen by a bumper Boxing Day crowd but our vile pandemic quickly dismissed that opportunity and we are left with a behind closed doors event to try to enjoy. Enjoyment is perhaps something to look forward to after the huge disappointment last Tuesday evening when we suffered only our second defeat of the campaign against an extremely physical and competitive Connahs Quay. I am in no doubt that the challenge will again be severe this afternoon and it will be a serious test of our resolve and ability to bounce back if we are to secure the valuable points on offer today. It is an enormous challenge for us all involved in the administration of football to host matches under the strict protocols of government guidelines and the strains and stress are impacting on the loyal band of volunteers who keep Clubs alive. It is extremely difficult if not impossible to adhere to all the
guidelines but rest assured we are doing our very best to comply and provide an entertaining football experience. Let us hope that restrictions will soon be eased and that a semblance of normality can return. We are very much looking forward to the return of our Academy at the end of the month but would implore the protocol power advisers to allow our parents to attend the Academy matches and training, always conforming to the strict rules of social distancing. This would massively help us all!! Please stay safe and well.

OPPONENT - CAERNARFON TOWN EST. 1937 HOME: THE OVAL ABOUT CAERNARFON TOWN Caernarfon Town Football Club is a Welsh football club based in Caernarfon, Gwynedd. The club is nicknamed "the Canaries" because of its yellow and green strip, a nickname that dates from 1895 and they currently play at The Oval. The first football club in Caernarfon, known as Caernarvon Wanderers, was formed in September 1876 and played at various grounds before moving to the Oval in 1888. On 30 October 1886, Wanderers were the first team from north west Wales to enter the FA Cup and lost 10–1 away to Stoke. Five years later, however, that particular club went out of existence but, in 1894, several former players began a new team called Carnarvon Ironopolis. That club competed in the North Wales Coast League, winning the championship on two occasions and reaching the semi-final of the Welsh Cup in 1900 and again in 1902. Unfortunately, following a dispute

with the league, Ironopolis folded in 1903. The demise of the club resulted in some of the players forming the Caernarvon Celts while others affiliated to the Caernarvon RWF (Royal Welsh Fusiliers), both clubs playing at the Oval. In 1906, the clubs amalgamated to form Carnarvon United and in 1909 the new club won both the Welsh and North Wales Amateur Cups. In 1937, a group of local football enthusiasts began Caernarfon Town F.C. and entered a team in the Welsh League (North) Division One. A 39-year unbroken membership of the league was begun and Caernarfon Town won the championship in 1946–47 and 1965–66 and finished runners-up in both 1956–57 and 1957–58 and once again in 1972–73. On 13 April 2013, Caernarfon Town made their way to Latham Park, Newtown, to face Kilvey Fords FC of Swansea in the 2012–13 FAW Trophy Final. They won the match 6–0 and it was their first FAW Trophy since 1978. The victory against the Swansea Senior League outfit is the biggest final winning-margin in the competition's 123-year history. They also gained promotion to the Huws Gray Cymru Alliance during the 2012–13 by finishing top of the Welsh Alliance, taking 66 points from 28 games.

The Lakesiders returned to Maes Tegid for the first time in over three months last night (16th of March) with a tough test at hand with Connah’s Quay Nomads the visitors. Both teams came into the game on good form,
with Nomads sitting at the top of the table, nine points adrift from Bala. A huge game for both clubs, coming to the end of Phase 1 and heading into the Champions Conference. The game got underway under the lights at Maes Tegid, and within the first minute, we took the lead! Raul Correia rushed forward after Nomads were dispossessed in midfield, as Lassana Mendes broke forward and put Raul in on goal, and there was no mistake from our number 9! A tidy finish passed the keeper early doors to make it 1-0! However, the lead lasted just three minutes. A mix up in the Bala box gave George Horan a simple task to just nod home from close range and equalise after four minutes!
A succession of free kicks for Nomads almost lead to them taking the lead, after an effort from Danny Davies was deflected onto the crossbar. Despite the fast start from Bala, it was all Nomads after the opener. An impressive number of free kicks awarded to the visitors throughout the first half an hour. Chris Venables came close on 38 minutes, after he was given space inside the box to shoot, but the Nomads defenders managed to block the ball out for a corner. The referee blew his whistle to end the first half, and possibly to the relief of The Lakesiders, after enduring a very stop start half with no fluidity to the game. It was all to play for in the second half! We got underway for the second half, and Bala were given an early free kick, with a chance to get the ball into the box. However Venables was deemed to be offside from the free kick, and that attack was stopped. Ramsay was called into action early in the half, with a brilliant point blank save from a header and managed to push the ball away from danger. The visitors appealed for a penalty ten minutes into the second half, but the referee waved play on. Another succession of free kicks for the visitors, as every tackle was deemed a foul by the referee, with a very similar scenario to the first half, with no fluidity to the game. With 25 minutes to go, the visitors were awarded a penalty. Sean Smith was alleged to have brought down the on-rushing Nomads player and the referee pointed to the spot. Callum Morris stepped up and dispatched the penalty to Ramsay’s right hand side, as Nomads took a 2-1 lead. Raul Correia attempted to get the equaliser, but his shot was blocked out for a corner.
It was done and dusted with five minutes to go, as Craig Curran headed into an empty net after Michael Wilde headed across goal to give Curran the easy task of just nodding home, as Nomads gained a 3-1 lead. Things got even worse for Bala, as Jonny Spittle picked up his second yellow card for a tackle on the half way line, despite getting the ball. A second game in a row with Bala finishing the game with ten men. Four minutes were added on at the end of the game, yet it was all but over for The Lakesiders. The referee blew his whistle for the final time, bringing an end to a disappointing result for Bala, with Nomads now gaining a 12 point lead over Bala at the top of the table.
