THE OFFICIAL MATCHDAY PROGRAMME OF BALA TOWN FOOTBALL CLUB
BALA TOWN SATURDAY 7TH NOVEMBER 2020
VS THE NEW SAINTS
NIGEL’S NOTES This evening we welcome back TNS to Maes Tegid for the replay of the fixture which was abandoned after floodlight failure when 88 minutes of the first meeting had already been played. I think that the vast majority of all involved with the match would argue that the replaying of this fixture is not justified but there are precedents for this decision and we must abide by the ruling. It has allowed our broadcasters to televise a live match for Sgorio and we hope we can put on another excellent demonstration of our Premier League standards if we can in some way replicate the excitement of the first encounter. These are certainly challenging times and this evening’s fixture is behind even more closed doors than our previous fixtures this season with only “professional “ personnel allowed into the ground. It will be an even stranger atmosphere for us all to adjust to!
Travel and social distancing regulations forced us into a 16 hour day last Saturday as we made the journey to Haverfordwest and to be perfectly honest this is an unacceptable burden for the team to have to manage. We must consider the health welfare of our team and management and this sort of travelling excesses should not be allowed in any future fixture considerations. We were disappointed to return with only a point from the long trip but go into this evening’s match in 2nd place. It will be a significantly important fixture and one which we hope will entertain our television audience. We return to Maes Tegid next Saturday for the visit of Penybont but with the easing of Covid lockdown regulations we should have more of our regular committee members available to ensure the smooth running of this match. We all look forward to a return to any semblance of normality but that scenario seems a long way off at present.

OPPONENT - THE NEW SAINTS EST. 1860 HOME: THE VENUE ABOUT OSWESTRY TOWN Founded in 1860, making them one of the world’s oldest football clubs, Oswestry Town FC were also founder members of the Football Association of Wales in 1876 – a rare achievement for an English club. In their long history, they’ve competed in the Northern Premier League, Cheshire League and Cymru Alliance.
ABOUT LLANSANTFFRAID From the small Welsh village of Llansantffraid, and nicknamed the ‘Saints’, the unassuming team began life playing in the Montgomeryshire Amateur League in 1959. Here it achieved considerable success, winning numerous honours. The Montgomeryshire League Championship (1969, 1970, 1971, 1983, 1987) and the Montgomeryshire Cup competition six times between 1963 and 1976. In addition, Llansantffraid were Village Cup winners seven times, up to the nineties.

ABOUT TOTAL NETWORK SOLUTIONS In the 1997/98 season Llansanffraid changed their name to Total Network Solutions (TNS), following a lucrative sponsorship deal with an Oswestry based computer networking specialist owned by entrepreneur Mike Harris. The partnership was working – in 1999/00 the club finally reached the pinnacle of Welsh Football when, in an exciting finale, TNS beat Barry Town to the league title and qualified for the European Cup. In 2003 the club’s phenomenal success meant the ground at Llansantffraid was no longer fit for purpose and there were no other suitable sites in the village that would sustain a full-time football club. The Chairman was forced to look for an alternative site to develop the club facilities.
THE MERGER On 7 June 2003, it was announced that Oswestry Town was to merge with Total Network Solutions, with the aim of playing at a new stadium in Oswestry from 2005/06. The troubled Oswestry Town was saved from Bankruptcy by Mike Harris, who cleared the clubs debts and financed the merger. Following the sale of Total Network Solutions to BT in 2006, the club changed its name to The New Saints FC.

Late drama again as the points are shared.
After an 11 day absence from the Cymru Premier, the Lakesiders were back again, with a trip down South to face off against Haverfordwest County AFC, aiming for redemption following the
defeat a couple weeks ago, which would hand The Town their only loss of the season so far. Two changes were made to the side following the previous game away to Flint Town, as John Rushton and Anthony Stephens would come in for Alex Ramsay and Jonny Spittle respectively. The game got underway at the Bridge Meadow Stadium with Will Evans coming close in the early stages, after a long throw into the box went into the direction of our number 8, who hooked the ball over the bar. A minute later, Haverfordwest had an opportunity to take the lead, but the shot was straight at Rushton from Danny Williams.
Steve Leslie tried his luck from range, but the midfielder couldn’t wrap his foot around the ball, as his shot sailed over the bar. On the 10th minute mark, Bala were given a massive let off, as Danny Williams received the ball in the Lakesider’s box, had time to turn and shoot, but dragged his shot wide, big opportunity for the home side to take the lead. Sean Smith put in a brilliant challenge in the box to deny a shot on goal from a Haverfordwest player on 20 minutes. Another chance for the home side, as Kieran Lewis passed through to Jack Wilson, but his shot went straight into the hands of Rushton. Antony Kay was the first player to be booked, for a foul in the Haverfordwest half. Raul Correia came very close to taking the lead on the 25th minute, as he met Leslie’s cross a few yards out, but his glancing header went just wide of the post. Haverfordwest had another great chance to take the lead, just 10 minutes from the end of the half, as one of their
forwards made a driving run towards the byline on the left hand side, but his powerful cross went through everyone, with two Haverfordwest players in the box not able to get a touch of the ball to direct it goalwards. Steve Leslie took a free kick in a similar position to the one he scored against Flint Town, however this time, his free kick was saved by the keeper and pushed away from any danger. The fourth official held up the board for added time, which seemed to show 20 minutes of added time, however he definitely meant 2 minutes. A half with little clear cut chances, however the home side looked the better team during the first 45, with a couple opportunities to take the lead through Danny Williams and Jack Wilson. It was all to play for in the second half! The second half got underway, and it took a couple minutes for either team to get going, however on 53 minutes, Chris Venables came close to breaking the deadlock, but his powerful header from a corner went wide of the post. A big chance for the Lakesiders came just after the hour mark, as Ollie Shannon played a ball into the feet of Venables, the skipper was able to turn inside the box, but took a heavy touch which the keeper then pounced on. A break in play then came as the keeper was down injured receiving some treatment following the collision with Venables. The first substitution for Bala came on 65 minutes, as Raul Correia came off for Henry Jones.
PREVIOUS LEAGUE FIXTURE HAVERFORDWEST 1 BALA TOWN 1
Lassana Mendes came close to breaking the deadlock on the 69th minute, but his long range shot was saved well by the injured keeper, to push the ball out for a corner. Haverfordwest earned a free kick on the left hand side after a handball from Anthony Stephens. Elliot Scotcher took the free kick, and somehow the ball managed to stay out of the goal, as his free kick was whipped brilliantly towards the left hand post, but his effort cannoned off the inside of the post, and stayed out of the goal, a massive let off for the Lakesiders. Finally, on the 84th minute, the deadlock was broken! A move that started with a lovely flick from Henry Jones into the path of Leslie, who made a driving run towards the byline, he put the cross into the front post, where Will Evans met the ball first infront of the defender, and hit the ball home to make it 1-0 to the Lakesiders! The second substitution for Bala came a minute later as Liam Davies replaced Lassana Mendes. Just seconds before the board was shown for added time, Haverfordwest would equalise… A ball into Jack Wilson in the box, with time to take a touch, he hit a shot towards goal, and Rushton wasn’t able to get a full hand to the ball, as it squirmed past the keeper to give the home side a late equaliser.

18 Bala Town Reserves Joint Manager Adam Galdo Steps Down. In a statement posted by Adam Galdo on his Twitter handle on the 21st of October, he said the following; "It is with a heavy heart I have stepped down as joint manager of Bala Town Reserves today. I want to thank all the players that have contributed to making it an enjoyable time as I experienced my ďŹ rst role in management. Starting a team from scratch really is not an easy thing to do, especially with being so inexperienced at the time. I feel like I have gained valuable experience and take pride in having been a part of starting something special for the community here in Bala. It was great being part of such an established club and I would like to express my sincere thanks to Nigel, Ruth, and the others who have helped me along the way, including members of the club who have been a big help from the start. Lastly, I want to thank Daf and Al for all the work they have put in since starting this too. It was an absolute pleasure doing it with you. I am going to carry on with my C license as I am over half way through now and hopefully one day, I will return to football. During the current climate with Coronavirus and the Welsh FA being an absolute embarrassment in regards to grassroots football in Wales, my love for the game is at an all time low! I wish the club all the very best and will continue to support when I can. Diolch"
The Club totally respect Adam's decision due to the current climate, and know how hard of a decision it was to make. Everyone involved with the Club would like to thank Adam for his hard work and dedication to the club during his time as joint manager, and would like to send our best wishes to him for the future. However, after discussions with manager Daf, Adam will sign for the club as a player for the forthcoming season, whenever that may be. Manager Daf has said Adam is a big signing for the club in terms of quality, experience and leadership and is happy to keep him on board in another manner. The Reserves will now be lead by Daf Hughes and Alan Roberts, with everyone involved with the Reserves hoping to get on the ďŹ eld, sooner rather than later, and hope that their scheduled friendlies for the 11th and 13th of November can go ahead following the completion of the two week lockdown in Wales.
