Since 1979, Kappa Omega Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., (AKA) has sponsored an Annual African American Graduation Awards Program. This program is a celebration of outstanding African American High School and honor roll Eighth Grade students in Kern County. High School graduates receive scholarships and Eighth Grade graduates are presented with Certificates of Recognition.
AKA awards scholarships to High School graduates based on the following criteria.
Submission of a complete scholarship application packet. The packet must include completed application, personal essay, two sealed letters of recommendation and an official transcript. Successful review of the application packet for significant achievement in one or more areas including: grade point average, school leadership activities, community service participation or athletic competition. There is also consideration of financial need.
Submission of proof of registration in 12 or more college units. Registration must be completed within the first grading period after high school graduation. High School students nominated for a scholarship must meet all of the above criteria. In the event a student fails to meet any of the criteria for the award (e.g. failure to submit proof of registration in college), the award will be returned to the scholarship fund to be awarded in a subsequent year.
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority partners with Community Donors who wish to give scholarships to deserving High School students. Some Community Donors give funds to the Bakersfield Ivy Legacy Foundation, Inc. for scholarship distribution while others give directly to the students. AKA also invites churches and other organizations to recognize their scholarship recipients during the African American Graduation Awards Program.
Eighth grade students are presented with Certificates of Recognition based upon the recommendation of the principal or counselor of their schools.

The Negro National Hymn: "Lift Every Voice and Sing"
by James Weldon Johnson
(June 17, 1871 - June 26, 1938)
Lift every voice and sing
Till earth and heaven ring, Ring with the harmonies of Liberty; Let our rejoicing rise
High as the listening skies,
Let it resound loud as the rolling sea.
Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us,
Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us,
Facing the rising sun of our new day begun
Let us march on till victory is won.
Stony the road we trod, Bitter the chastening rod, Felt in the days when hope unborn had died;
Yet with a steady beat, Have not our weary feet
Come to the place for which our fathers sighed?
We have come over a way that with tears have been watered,
We have come, treading our path through the blood of the slaughtered, Out from the gloomy past, Till now we stand at last
Where the white gleam of our bright star is cast.
God of our weary years, God of our silent tears, Thou who has brought us thus far on the way;
Thou who has by Thy might Led us into the light, Keep us forever in the path, we pray.
Lest our feet stray from the places, Our God, where we met Thee;
Lest, our hearts drunk with the wine of the world, we forget Thee; Shadowed beneath Thy hand, May we forever stand.
True to our GOD, True to our native land
