Dear Chamber Members,

We kicked off this year with a significant milestone, our Annual Board Installation and Awards Luncheon, commemorating 105 years of the Chamber’s impact in the Greater Bakersfield region. We welcomed Senior Vice President and Chief Business Officer at Valley Strong Credit Union, Deanna Blaise, as our 2025 Chair of the Board, and celebrated the leadership of our outgoing Chairman, Rob Duchow, public affairs manager at SoCal Gas Company. We also hosted all four Assembly District 32 Special Primary Election candidates at our Government Review Council meeting, moderated by 2025 Chair Amanda Frank. The discussion gave members direct access to candidates. In related news, the Chamber’s political action committee endorsed our new Assemblyman Stan Ellis, District 32. Leadership Bakersfield Leadership & Business Day

Leadership Bakersfield kicked off its 2025 season with back-to-back “Leadership and Business Days” on January 9 and 10, 2025.

The class was welcomed during a luncheon at The Padre’s Clover Room by President/CEO Janelle Capra, Program Director Kami Gonzalez and Leadership Bakersfield Chair Ryan Kroeker. Amy Travis, Executive Director, First Five, provided an invocation. Bob Meadows, Director of Community Relations of Valley Strong Credit Union shared his impactful message on leadership serving as the keynote speaker.

Prior to the ceremony, participants received their DISC behavioral self-assessment results, and learned about their meanings and how they impact leadership from Dr. Juanita Webb of J. Webb Consulting. Photographer Gisselle Fernando of Lettratto provided headshots kicking off the day.

Day two was kicked off by Joe Coughlin, owner of Coconut Joe’s, who shared the story of his business, life and “the gift”, and the importance of mentoring and helping others.

City councilman Andrae Gonzales, Ward 2 shared his local story from advocacy to representation to include his plans and the impact he is driving.

To round out the morning, participants were placed in groups for the Marshmallow Challenge, a simple design exercise for teams to build a structure by using spaghetti, masking tape, and string. Afterward, groups met their fellow project teammates, with a twist learning that they had been sitting with their

project teammates throughout the 2-days.

Temblor Brewing Co. hosted the group for lunch in the brewery, restaurant, and venue’s dining room, which was followed by a tour of the brewery and discussion by Don Bynum, president of the brewery, and director of asset management for Bynum, Inc. They were treated to tastings of a few Temblor beers as well.

To wrap up, participants learned more about their projects and proposals from Marc Caputo, of Boys & Girls Club of Kern County who is the Project Chair for Leadership Bakersfield and Mia Cifuentes, of Berry Corporation.

The Leadership and Business Days were led by Advisory Council members Cory Rothman, Justin Hiebert of New Frontier Consulting, and Kami Gonzalez, Vice President of the Greater Bakersfield Chamber.

Leadership Bakersfield Law Enforcement Day

The Bakersfield Police Department (BPD) was honored to host this year’s Law Enforcement Day for the Leadership Bakersfield program. Community engagement is at the core of BPD’s mission, and we were grateful for the opportunity to connect with and educate this year’s class on various aspects of law enforcement and the criminal justice system. On Friday, February 14, the class began its day at the Bakersfield Chamber of Commerce, enjoying a delicious breakfast provided by the Kern County Superintendent of Schools. While at the Chamber, participants received an introduction to law enforcement, focusing on key aspects of the Bakersfield Police Department. Additionally, the class attended a presentation by BPD’s Wellness Coordinator, who highlighted the department’s commitment to officer and staff well-being, ensuring they perform at their best.

The group then walked to BPD Headquarters, where the Community Engagement Division presented on BPD’s proactive efforts to build strong relationships with the community. This was followed by a Q&A session featuring BPD Assistant Chief Jeremy Blakemore, Assistant District Attorney Andrea Kohler, and Criminal Defense Litigator Jared Thompson. The discussion covered the challenges in law enforcement and provided insights into how the criminal justice system functions.

A highlight of the day was the opportunity for participants to engage with BPD’s training simulator, the same system officers use to refine their skills and decision-making abilities. This hands-on

experience was especially popular among the class. The class then visited the Bakersfield Police Activities League (BPAL) facility, where officers build positive relationships with local youth through various programs and events.

Later, the class observed demonstrations from BPD’s specialized units, including the SWAT team, K-9 unit, and Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) team. The day concluded at the Kern County Sheriff’s Office Headquarters, where participants learned about the Sheriff’s Office Air Support Unit.

A special thank you to the Bakersfield Police Officers Association for sponsoring the day and to Golden Empire Transit for providing transportation.
