Message from the Chairwoman of the Board
As a long-time member of the Greater Bakersfield Chamber of Commerce, I am excited to serve as the 2019 Chairwoman of the Board. The Chamber has been a driving force in the local economy since its founding in 1920, and as we head into our 99th year, the support of our members is more important than ever. Our incredible members allow the Chamber to celebrate ribbon cuttings Darlene Mohlke and anniversaries, plan enlightening class days for our Leadership and Youth Leadership Bakersfield programs, and review ballot initiatives and legislation amongst many other things. Most importantly, we hope our members appreciate that even if they are not as actively engaged in the Chamber as they’d like to be, or have time for, the Chamber is always working for you. We will continue to champion initiatives and policies that support economic growth, highlight the great partnerships and projects happening in our community and develop the next generation of business and community leadership. Here are just a few of the initiatives we will be working on: • A continuing priority will be assisting our small business members with labor law compliance and connecting them with procurement opportunities. The Chamber’s expanded Labor Law and HR Forum series keeps business owners and managers informed of new laws and requirements, and our Pancakes & Partnerships event will connect small

The goal is to improve the external image of Bakersfield and Kern County. WORKING FOR YOU in 2019
As I look back on 2018, I am so proud of the Chamber, our volunteers and staff team; and I hope our members are as well. We engaged aggressively in local, regional and statewide elections; held the largest Beautiful Bakersfield event ever (both in number of nominees and attendance); graduated the 30th class of the storied Leadership Bakersfield program; and began the Nick Ortiz process of working with our partners in government and the private sector to rebrand the city and the county. Some of this work will bleed over into 2019, we must hold our newly elected officials accountable and make sure they are prioritizing the business community’s needs; we will complete the creative portion of our work on branding; and we will continue to be the region’s community leadership incubator. We know that ushering in the New Year can be a bittersweet experience. Turning the page can be refreshing, but the harried end of year tasks that face us and our businesses can be overwhelming. The mad rush of holiday traditions and celebrations recedes for a few weeks, only to be replaced by events ushering in new leaders and a new year.
At the Chamber, we want you to not just get off on the best foot for the new year, but make 2019 an amazing year for you and your business. We know you’re busy, but please take advantage of the resources available to through our organization to strengthen your business and highlight your achievements. Chamber membership provides an incredible value and return on investment for your business. ew chairs have been appointed to lead the Chamber’s advisory councils and committees. These chairs serve as the driving force behind the Chamber's high-caliber programming and services. They allow our members various outlets to build connections, advocate for the good of local business and develop the community’s next leaders.
Ambassador Committee Chair – Jim Luff Chosen Payments This committee is the heart of the Chamber. Acting as the public relations arm, this committee participates and assists with ribbon cuttings, mixers and other networking events that allow members to connect and promote their businesses. BCCPAC Chair – Keith Brice Mid State Development Corporation As the Chamber's political action committee, BCCPAC endorses and funds business-friendly candidates for office. All PAC funds are separate from the Chamber's. Its separate governing board does include representation from the Chamber’s Board of Directors. Bakersfield Young Professionals Council Chair – Endee Grijalva Bakersfield College This council’s goal is to provide young professionals with opportunities for social connectedness, professional

development and philanthropic awareness. The council also plans the popular Downtown Street Party and other events for young professionals. Beautiful Bakersfield Committee Chair – Jennifer Baird Stria Tasked with planning the “Oscars of Bakersfield,” this committee plans the Beautiful Bakersfield Awards Gala, which celebrates the best in the community. The committee seeks nominations and plans the annual dinner gala held in June. Government Review Council Chair – Beth Pandol Water Association of Kern County GRC is the Chamber’s legislative and regulatory committee, and meets almost every week to discuss and debate issues affecting the local business community. With an active election year, the committee also takes the lead on statewide and local ballot initiatives.
Leadership Bakersfield Advisory Council Chair – Jeff Burdick Bakersfield Police Department This advisory council coordinates and manages the area’s premier leadership development program, Leadership Bakersfield. Council members recruit applicants, interview and select class members and develop the programming participants will experience during the 10-month program. Youth Leadership Bakersfield Advisory Council Chair – Patricia Marquez Modeled after Leadership Bakersfield, this program provides high school students with the connections and experiences to become the community’s future leaders. The advisory council works directly with school representatives to recruit applicants, interview and select the class members and develops the programming for the six class days.

COMPLIANCE LABOR LAW & HR FORUM
N
ew employment laws are set to hit the books on Jan. 1, and will impact more than just how California employers manage their daily operations. Some new laws will make significant changes to how business is handled statewide, while others will make small changes to existing laws. The Chamber is committed to helping our members stay in compliance with new laws by hosting a Labor Law & HR Forum on Thursday, Jan. 10. A panel of local legal experts, including Jerry Pearson from Young Wooldridge LLP; Jay Rosenlieb from Klein, DeNatale, Goldner; and Dan Klingenberger of LeBeau-Thelen LLP, will discuss what laws to watch for and potential impacts to local businesses. The event will be held at the Chamber office, 1725 Eye St. Check-in begins at 7:30 a.m., with the program following from 8-10 a.m. Cost is $25 for members; $50 for nonmembers.
