WORKING FOR YOU in 2018

As a long-time member of the Greater Bakersfield Chamber of Commerce, I am excited to serve as the 2018 Chairwoman of the Board.

The Chamber has been a driving force in the local economy since its founding in 1920, and as we head into our 98th year, the support of our members is more important than ever. Our organization is a cornerstone of the Bakersfield community, Carla Musser and our volunteers are amazing. Our member involvement allows the Chamber to celebrate ribbon cuttings and anniversaries, plan enlightening class days for our Leadership and Youth Leadership Bakersfield programs, and review ballot initiatives and legislation amongst many other things.

One thing I want all of our members to know is that even if you are not as actively engaged in the Chamber as you’d like to be, the Chamber is always working for you. We will continue to champion initiatives and policies that support economic growth, highlight the great partnerships and projects happening in our community and develop the next generation of business and community leadership. Here are just a few of the initiatives we will be working on: A priority in 2018 will be assisting our small business members with labor law compliance and connecting them with procurement opportunities. The Chamber will expand our Labor Law and HR Forum series, and include more compliance tools. As a former HR professional,

I can attest how important it is for businesses to stay current on California’s ever-changing labor laws.

The Chamber will be producing our second annual BizClimate Survey. The survey’s first composite results provided valuable intelligence on how our membership views the economy, barriers to growth and the priorities the Chamber should focus on in the coming year. This year, we hope to dive deeper on challenges identified in 2017, including workforce development and health care.

Through a partnership between the City of Bakersfield, the County of Kern and many local companies, work has begun on a Regional Branding Initiative. The goal is to improve the external image of Bakersfield and Kern County. We believe this effort will be integral to driving economic growth and the recruitment of highly-skilled workers. The Chamber is serving as a fiscal agent and facilitator for this important project.

We are proud of our reputation as an unabashed advocate for the business community and for aggressively working to elect pro-business candidates.

With 2018 serving as an election year, there will be challenges and opportunities for businesses on local and state issues. BCCPAC, the Chamber’s Political Action Committee, will continue to support businessfriendly candidates and work with other local business associations to amplify our collective voice.

Since its inception 30 years ago, Leadership Bakersfield has grown Le into in the area’s premier leadership development program. The goal is threede fold fo – to change how participants view the th community as a whole, provide the ne needed tools, resources and contacts to take ta their career to the next level and give insight into the issues impacting local key in industry sectors. in From September through June, participants attend an all-day session pa ce centered on a key community issue.

Each Ea session contains a combination of lectures, panel discussions, handson activities and on-site visits to locales relevant to the day’s theme. Happy New Year, Bakersfield! On behalf of our Board of Directors and the staff at the Chamber, we all hope 2018 is a great year for our beloved city and the local economy.

As the Chamber celebrates 98 years serving the local business community, we’ve decided to take stock, to update some of our programs and communications, and honestly, try to live the mission of being Your Business Advocate.

One thing that has obviously changed significantly is our monthly publication, METRO. METRO’s change is not just about its appearance. Going forward, the content and delivery will be very different as well. Instead of blurbs about this program or that event, we will be doing more long-form stories. Perhaps the most significant change will be how this magazine is published.

Beginning in February, METRO will become an all-digital publication. I know for some this may be an unwelcome change, especially those who want to feel something tangible in their hands as they read it. However, after polling our membership and advertisers, we felt that this was the right decision, and a necessary one to continue providing our members with a monthly publication.

Starting this month, you can check out METRO on the digital publishing platform ISSUU, where it will read and flip just like a magazine. I’d like to take a moment to thank my team members who lead our communications – our Marketing Manager Melissa Rossiter who created the new design and Jean Scheiber and Hillary Haenes who assist with shaping our print and digital messaging. Despite this, Kern County’s economy, fueled by oil, ag, health care, manufacturing and more, remains one of the most influential economies in the nation.

Dr. Victor Davis Hanson will be this year’s keynote speaker.

As an author, Hanson has written hundreds of articles, book reviews and editorials on matters ranging from ancient Greek, agrarian and military history to foreign affairs, domestic politics and contemporary culture.

ew chairs have been appointed to lead the Chamber’s advisory councils and committees. These chairs serve as the driving force behind the Chamber's high-caliber programming and services. They allow our members various outlets to build connections, advocate for the good of the local business and develop the community’s next leaders.

Ambassadors Committee Chair – Jonny Perez Deprigo This committee is the heart of the Chamber. Acting as the public relations arm, this committee participates and assists with ribbon cuttings, mixers and other networking events that allow members to connect and promote their businesses.

BCCPAC Chair – Keith Brice Mid State Development Corporation As the Chamber's political action committee, BCCPAC endorses and funds business-friendly candidates for office. All PAC funds are separate from the Chamber's. Its separate governing board does include representation from the Chamber’s Board of Directors.

Bakersfield Young Professionals Council Chair – Austin Smith Sage Equities This council’s goal is to provide young professionals with opportunities for social connectedness, professional development and philanthropic

awareness. The council also plans the popular BYP Street Party and other events for young professionals.

Beautiful Bakersfield Committee Chair – Ramona Puget Autism Society – Kern Autism Network Tasked with planning the “Oscars of Bakersfield,” this committee plans the Beautiful Bakersfield Awards Gala, which celebrates the best in the community. The committee seeks nominations, judges and plans the annual dinner gala held in June.

Government Review Council Chair to be announced GRC is the Chamber’s legislative and regulatory committee, and meets weekly to discuss and debate issues affecting the local business community.

With an active election year, the committee also takes the lead on statewide and local ballot initiatives.

Leadership Bakersfield Advisory Council Chair – Andy Stanley Bank of America/Merrill Lynch This advisory council coordinates and manages the area’s premier leadership development program, Leadership Bakersfield. Council members recruit applicants, interview and select class members and develop the programming participants will experiences during the 10-month program.

Youth Leadership Bakersfield Advisory Council Chair – Amy Smith Bakersfield Museum of Art Modeled after Leadership Bakersfield, this program provides high school students with the connections and experiences to becoming the community’s future leaders. The advisory council works directly with school representatives to recruit applicants, interviews and selects the class members and develops the programming for the six class days.
