MESSAGE FROM THE CEO They say that March comes in like a lion, but boy did it exit that way too! Your Chamber has been a hub of activity and action over the past month. From committee meetings, to ribbon cuttings, luncheons and signature events - our activities ran the gamut. The energy and dedication of our volunteer leaders, ambassadors and staff team was exceptional and energizing. Nick Ortiz Many of our members attended the 2019 Economic Summit, an event we co-produce with the Kern Economic Development Corporation and Cal State, Bakersfield. The Summit attracted a 400-plus crowd of business, community, and educational leaders to hear directly from experts on the macroeconomic issues shaping the state and nation, as well as a look into trends in our region. The summit was kicked off by economist Christopher Thornburg who schooled us on “miserabalism” or the belief that the economy is worse than data suggests. The event closed with the dean of the Sacramento press corp, columnist Dan Walters, updating the crowd on the state of Sacramento and the new administration. The Summit is always informative, but our 2019 program was especially thought provoking and really highlighted how important Kern County is to California’s economy.

We hosted freshman congressman TJ Cox for a Report from the Capitol luncheon. Our members got to hear directly from Congressman Cox about his background, career, and policy priorities. We ended the month celebrating the centennial anniversary of one of the Chamber’s founding members - Urner’s - with a ribbon cutting and mixer. LEADERSHIP BAKERSFIELD'S 2018 COMMUNITY IMPACTS Team 2 Team 3 Team 1
The Mission at Kern County ensures that Bakersfield’s homeless do not go hungry by providing more than 500 meals each day. Team 1 renovated the Curt Kennedy Community Center’s dining hall with new cabinets, storage and paint. They also donated funding and kitchen supplies to The Mission.
Team 4
M.A.R.E. Therapeutic Riding Center uses equine therapies to help children and adults with special needs and disabilities. Team 2 designed and built a new ramp to help clients get onto the horses, installed new lighting and painted railings.
Team 4 launched a research project into the feasibility of respite care options for Kern’s homeless population. Their research found that these programs allow homeless patients a chance to recuperate fully from medical issues, and allows them better access to other services, like transitional housing and mental health options. The team presented their findings and branding effort to key stakeholders at a luncheon at The Padre Hotel.
A program of the Kern County Probation Department, Pathways Academy is an in-custody rehabilitation treatment program for female youth offenders. Team 3 completely transformed the facility’s main living space into a warm, inviting environment. They painted, hung new curtains and blinds as wells as added books and other resources to its library.

A hands-on approach to
ENERGY
O
ne of Kern’s largest industries was the focus of the recent Leadership Bakersfield class session. Students connected with top oil professionals and took an exclusive tour of one of the county’s largest oil fields – Elk Hills field. The day started off at Aera Energy LLC, where participants toured Aera Academy to learn the many facets of oil production, Aera’s company history and more. The energy sector relies on a wide array of skill sets and expertise to manage its daily operations. A panel of local experts discussed the current challenges and opportunites in the oil industry. Representatives from PG&E, Southern California Gas Company and Southern California Edison discussed how utility companies are contributing to the local energy sector. LB Alum, Michael Dixon, explained a new solar project that partners Aera Energy with GlassPoint Solar. The solar thermal facility will be built at the Belridge field and will be the largest solar energy project in the state once it is completed. Participants received a behind-the-scenes peek at how California Resources Corporation manages its daily processes at Elk Hills through a tour of the field operations and Consolidated Control Facility. CRC’s Regulatory Director Joe Ashley provided an overview of the innovative environmental safeguards and conservation program the company incorporates within its operations.

The intricate workings of the
LEGAL SYSTEM
F
rom first responders rushing to a call, to lawyers and judges in a courtroom, Youth Leadership Bakersfield students saw firsthand how the legal system works to protect public safety during its March 6 class day. The Law, Criminal Justice and Public Safety class session started in a courtroom at the Kern County Superior Court. Students observed individuals convicted of crimes receive their sentences from Judge Michael G. Bush. After the fast-paced courtroom session, the students participated in a question and answer session with Andrea Kohler, assistant district attorney and Pam Singh, public defender. At police headquarters, Bakersfield Assistant Police Chief Demestihas shared how he became a police officer and what career opportunities the department offers. Bakersfield Police Department also opened its training facility to showcase the resources it uses to keep the city safe. Students met with the Bomb Squad, SWAT team, Negotiators, Explorers and K-9 officers. The day wrapped up at the Olive Drive Fire Training Facility where Bakersfield Fire Department put on a demonstration using hydraulic rescue tools that are used to assist vehicle extrication of crash victims, as well as other rescues from small spaces. Nonprofits “Dream B-i-i-i-g!” as they fundraise through Give Big Kern By Louis Medina Kern Community Foundation Following a successful Give Big Kern 2018 campaign that raised $231,000 and 52,000 pledged volunteer hours for 119 local nonprofits — earning the effort a Beautiful Bakersfield Award nomination — Kern Community Foundation is leading 130 nonprofits in another strong online fundraising charge again in 2019. Observed on the first Tuesday in May since 2016 as, “One Day to Celebrate the Giving Spirit of Kern County!” Give Big Kern falls on May 7 this year and has adopted the theme, “Dream B-i-i-i-g!” as mascot Billy the Give Big Goat might say. Nonprofits have been encouraged to challenge themselves by setting fundraising goals that are just a little ambitious and working hard to meet them; engaging board members, partners, and networks in peer-to-peer fundraising efforts; and procuring matching gifts from corporate sponsors or philanthropic supporters to help multiply dollars raised. These strategies — goal-setting, peer-to-peer fundraising, and matching gift commitments — are proven ways to maximize fundraising, said Charlie Mulligan, CEO of GiveGab, which designs and powers the givebigkern.org donation platform, as well as 200 other giving day websites across the country. Give Big Kern is now where longer-lived giving days that are surpassing the $1 million mark were five years ago, Mulligan said. “You have much room to grow,” he told a group of nonprofit leaders during a recent visit to Bakersfield from GiveGab headquarters in Ithaca, New York. With tools that include online and in-person training on social media and online fundraising, free marketing materials, connections to CSUB student interns and more, Kern Community Foundation is helping local nonprofits realize their fundraising dreams through Give Big Kern.
