Julien Bailly

After spending two years in an architecture studio in Milan, i’m seeking for a new experience abroad. I am a 25 years old french architect always up to new challenges. I am a really flexible person, very curious and have a strong desire to learn and discover new cultures. I have always been fascinated by the diversity of the world and how different ways of life can inspire and give shape to the design process. I believe that this curiosity and my multicultural education and work experience will help me bring fresh perspectives and ideas to my work as an architect.

Residential Building

Fall 2022 (Exchange)

Academic work

Situated in the Swedish city of Lund, this project located at a busy intersection near the city center is a highly active part of the city, characterized by large buildings and a natural park that enhances the project with green views. The project seeks to take advantage of the plot size while reconnecting the existing various orientations and urban situations. It integrates into the context like a «puzzle piece» shaping itself to connect neighboring «pieces».

Thus, the project completes the inner courtyard of the existing building while establishing a new connection to the park. The two main residential buildings are positioned to partially detach from the street, aligning with the orientations of the nearby buildings. As a result, a new urban square is created, providing space for small commercial activities, bringing vibrancy to the area. These buildings include a total of 28 apartments, designed to provide diversity through different sizes. A detailed study of orientations and façade treatments (sunrooms, large corner windows, etc) enhances architectural quality and uniqueness in each apartment.

This multiscale strategy has then an impact spanning from the existing urban context to the arrangement of the apartments.

Urban Renewal

Location: Sevran, France

Urban design

Spring 2022 (Thesis)

Academic work

Located in Sevran-Livry, in the Parisian suburbs, this neighborhood reflects the outdated urbanization inherited from modernity while also showcasing the architectural qualities of its time. Centered around three collective housing buildings that bear numerous architectural signatures of the modernist era, this neighborhood is an ideal site for a urban renewal.

The project aims to place the individual at the heart of the neighborhood by providing dedicated public spaces. This involves expanding pedestrian areas and revitalizing existing public services and spaces. The primary objective is to create a cohesive neighborhood by establishing uninterrupted urban continuity. To achieve this, it is essential to integrate the large residential buildings into the urban plan, considering them as urban devices.

Thus, the project includes interventions on the ground floors to make them porous and accessible to the public, integrating them into the urban experience while introducing new public services (a gymnasium, a library, offices, a café, etc.). The aim is to create a public urban space that benefits from the qualities of the adjacent public spaces and enhances the urban life of its users.

Summer 2023

Professional work - GaS Studio

The subject of this project proposal is an office building located in Milan. Done in the 1950’s, the building is driven by the industrial development of Milan and contains a particular structure and building shape made by the famous engineer Luigi Nervi.

This project aims to define a new architectural identity for the building, transforming it into a landmark in an urban context undergoing significant transformation, while preserving the historical elements of the original design. The goal is to highlight the architectural qualities of the building while also enhancing its energy and environmental efficiency, minimizing risks associated with the project’s intervention.

The majority of the restructuring takes place on the ground floor, where new volumes are introduced alongside a green artificial hill that connects to an existing “green corridor.” Additionally, two floors are added to the top of the building to provide more office space. The office layouts are carefully designed to ensure maximum efficiency, reflecting the building’s shape. The project fully complies with Milan’s building regulations, taking full advantage of the existing framework to maximize its overall efficiency.

Competition - Architecture Museum

Spring 2024

Professional work - GaS Studio

Located in Helsinki, this competition project envisions a new Museum of Architecture and Design. The goal is to create a public monument seamlessly integrated into the city while maximizing its unique location. As a recognizable icon, the museum aims to attract visitors year-round with a diverse range of activities. Beyond its function, it embodies Finland’s rich design heritage evocating, by its architecture, cultural and historical connections that bind the museum closely to its location and national identity.

To optimize the use of this complex plot and allowed square meters, the design features a ground floor that seamlessly fits the site’s shape, covered by an artificial hill. This approach enhances urban integration while elevating the main volume on a pedestal, reinforcing its iconic presence. Freed from the plot’s constraints, the museum’s main volume highlights the simplicity and sobriety of Finnish architecture, with an oculus piercing the oval shape to channel natural light down to the ground floor beneath the hill.

To align with the evolving concept of museums, the project offers an innovative and flexible layout, pushing the boundaries of what a museum can be.

This competition project, located in Milan, propose to rehabilitate and develop an exmilitary complex into a vibrant residential neigborhood. The competition organizer provided a urban plan divided into several building plots having different requirements. The goal of the proposal is to restore and enhance the existing structures while respecting the history and identity of the site, integrating modern and sustainable functions.

The project hosts a variety of uses, including high-end and affordable housing, student accommodations, and retail spaces. This mix of functions aims to create a dynamic and inclusive neighborhood that meets the needs of a constantly evolving Milan. The project stands out for its sustainable approach, incorporating innovative energy solutions and public spaces, contributing to improved livability and social cohesion in the area.

Thus, the projet contains the planification and transformation of the ex-barracks into urban villas and duplexs but also the adding of two high-end residential buildings, a residential tower with spacious apartments, a student housing and two affordable housing buildings.
