Drone Use Policy

Many guests, content creators and media visiting Southern Ocean Lodge are keen to capture the lodge and Kangaroo Island’s surrounds from the air. To ensure the protection of native wildlife, the enjoyment of fellow guests and compliance with local regulations, the following policy applies to all use of Remotely Piloted Aircraft (drones).
Legislative Requirements
The Department of Environment, Water and Natural Resources advises that drone use within Kangaroo Island’s national parks and sanctuaries is regulated under the National Parks and Wildlife Act 1972. These guidelines are in place to safeguard the island’s diverse wildlife and pristine habitats. National Parks officers may request drone operations to cease at any time if activity is considered a risk to wildlife or is found to be in breach of regulations.
Use Within National Parks
Recreational drone use is generally not permitted in National Parks, including for amateur or commercial photography and filming. This restriction exists because drones can disturb wildlife, interfere with park-management activities and impact the privacy of other visitors. In limited circumstances, exceptions may be granted. Permit applications can be made to the Department of Environment, Water and Natural Resources, and any approved activity must be supervised by a National Parks officer during filming.
Local Park Boundaries
Southern Ocean Lodge is bordered by Kelly Hill Conservation Park and the privately owned Hanson Bay Sanctuary. Other protected areas nearby include Flinders Chase National Park, Seal Bay Conservation Park and the Cape Bouguer Wilderness Protection Area, which extends east from Hanson Bay. Guests should remain aware of these adjoining reserves and their associated regulations.
Drone Use on Lodge Premises
Guests are welcome to operate drones from designated locations around the lodge, including the boardwalks and clifftops on either side of the property, as well as nearby beaches, provided all National Parks’ guidelines are followed. To maintain guest privacy and comfort, drones must not be used adjacent to lodge buildings. This includes the guest suites, the main lodge (Great Room and restaurant) and the Southern Spa.
