Drone Use Policy

Many guests, content creators and media visiting Silky Oaks Lodge are keen to capture the lodge and its rainforest surrounds from the air. To protect culturally significant sites, safeguard native wildlife, preserve the enjoyment and privacy of fellow guests and ensure compliance with local regulations, the following policy applies to all use of remotely piloted aircraft (drones).
Park Boundary
Silky Oaks Lodge is bordered by Daintree National Park, downstream from Mossman Gorge, within the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area, a living natural wonder recognised for its deep Indigenous cultural connections, exceptional diversity, evolutionary significance and distinctive landscapes. Guests are asked to remain mindful of this adjoining reserve and its associated regulations.
Use Within Daintree National Park
Recreational drone use is permitted in limited areas of Daintree National Park, subject to Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) regulations. Drones weighing 2kg or less may be operated outside designated drone-restriction areas; however, drone use is strictly prohibited at Mossman Gorge.
Commercial drone use, including filming and photography, generally requires authorisation. In some circumstances, QPWS may exempt small-scale activities from formal approval where operations take place outside restricted areas, involve no more than 10 people and use drones weighing 2kg or less.
QPWS restrictions are in place to protect wildlife, preserve culturally sensitive sites and safeguard the visitor experience.
Use on Lodge Premises
Personal drones are not permitted to be operated anywhere within Silky Oaks Lodge. This no-drone zone includes the main lodge, guest suites, the Mossman River and riverbank and all surrounding areas of the property. This restriction is in place to ensure the privacy and comfort of all guests and to maintain safety, particularly due to regular helicopter operations from the lodge helipad.
Exceptions may be granted to approved videographers and content creators. Any authorised use must be pre-arranged with the lodge team and conducted under the supervision of lodge management during designated operating windows, with all safety, privacy and regulatory requirements strictly followed.
