Meet Gloria, Huka Lodge's longest-serving team member and one of our most treasured.
Gloria's first day in Housekeeping was Friday 30 September 1988 37 years and 272 days ago and she hasn't looked back since She even still has her original employment contract, complete with a starting hourly rate of $7 86
Over nearly four decades, Gloria has become the living encyclopaedia of Huka Lodge She is our real-life BIMS, if you need to know where something belongs in a room, what's missing from a setup, or how things have always been done, Gloria is the person you call Her knowledge of this place is simply unmatched.
A laundry expert, a skilled seamstress, and a calm and capable hand in whatever is needed ,Gloria's contribution to Huka Lodge is immeasurable, and we are incredibly lucky to have her.

Sometimes the best way to understand what we do is to live it firsthand. A group of the Tierra Atacama Team stepped out of the Lodge and into the desert for a day of excursions, experiencing exactly what our guests feel when they explore this extraordinary place with us. It was a day of connection, laughter, and a good reminder of just how special this corner of the world is There is nothing quite like experiencing the Beckons spirit from the other side and coming back with that fire renewed.

Hannah was lucky enough to be invited to join one of training sessions for Maggie Beer Foundation as part of their ‘Trainer Mentor Program’.
The Trainer Mentor Program pairs aged care home kitchen teams with a qualified chef trainer who will mentors the chefs to serve flavourful, nutritious food and deliver an enhanced dining experience for residents in aged care homes.
The program is FREE, delivered in-Home and is fully tailored to the needs of each aged care home At the conference, each chef trainer came with ideas to expand their recipes, discuss way to overcome roadblocks and most importantly, trailing new recipes.. yum!

What inspired you to become a chef?
Being grown in a joint family in India food always played a crucial role in my life as all the neighbours will come together during festivals to cook sweets and other dishes and being grown in such surroundings played an important role in my life Following, also being an introvert, I find it is easy to talk to people when I cook food for them and easy to start a conversation but the main turning point was when I did my internship at JW Marriott and cooked pasta for an Italian person and he like it so much that he wants to meet me, neither of us can communicate but somehow we understand each other and that’s truly when I felt that you need any language to communicate because food is the most import language that anyone can talk and understand
What’s your signature dish at The Louise, and what makes it special?
The quail dish that we have on the current menu will definitely played an important role, I always want to use ingredients which I dislike and combine with the ingredients that I like and that dish exactly plays to that role Quail my favourite bird paired with radicchio which is bitter and I don’t like and then blue berries sound wild but somehow it all comes together as a well balanced and delicious dish
What do you enjoy most about working at The Louise?
I will say the team and the people that we have at the Louise, it more like a family than a workplace, everyone is so well connected with each other and look after each other, which is really hard to find somewhere else
Who has been your biggest influence or mentor in your culinary journey?
Definitely Marco Pierre White was one of the biggest influences in my life as well as all my mentors and colleagues that I have worked with, the amount of passion and dedication they have with the food was unbelievable, it is not just a regular job for those guys it was something worth doing and looking back on all those guest and happy moments makes their work worthwhile, they showed me food is not just a commodity but far more important thing and the value we add in peoples life who choose to come and enjoy the food we make
What’s the most unusual or memorable dish you ’ ve ever created?
Anchovies on toast with blueberry salsa and white chocolate grated on top, sounds weird but I have cooked for people and its something they love and want to try it again
What’s your go-to comfort food when you ’ re not working?
Fried chicken for sure, just want to listen to Chopin symphony and cook some fried chicken at home

What was the journey that brought you to Silky Oaks Lodge, where had life taken you before Beckons?
I honestly didn’t intend to have a career in Hospitality, like many young people in the 90 ’ s, it was a job while I studied at school and Uni Thirty-three years later, I still feel there is always something new and exciting to look forward to Before COVID I had spent the majority working in F&B, from everything from fine dining, pubs, breweries, tapas bars & restaurants in Spain and a stint at the amazing River Café in London, where I worked with some real legends That’s where I picked up a love for a more relaxed side of premium dining, which is something that really attracted me to Silky Oaks I was totally sold by the idea of an amazing product and experience, delivered with genuine, down-to-earth style and service. We are so lucky that in this industry, we get to live and work in places many people dream of visiting and I love sharing this beautiful place and all it has to offer with our guests
Is there a particular moment or achievement in your career that you ’ re especially proud of?
I was a General Manager at Matso’s Brewery in Broome, at the time we only distributed to WA and Darwin I was part of the team that pushed to get our product out there Australia wide and I’m still pretty chuffed to see that from our small beginnings, my favourite Ginger Beer is now in nearly every bottle shop and bar around the country That said, 2025 was an amazing year for us here at Silky, I am so proud of our team that has seen the lodge recognised as #1 Best Hotel in Australasia by Condé Nast Readers' Choice Awards, #2 Resort in Australia by Gourmet Traveller plus earn Two Michelin Keys, that’s pretty special
What is the strangest request or complaint you have had from a guest??
Back when I lived on site and had the night phone, I had a call from a guest at 3.00am asking me to come for a walk with them to find out what bird was making ‘ a distinct and unusual call’
What’s the best piece of career advice you ’ ve ever received?
One of my very first bosses gave me advice on customer service that set my perspective early on He said, “Never say no, even if you can’t do it Sell them the idea of what you can do’. Creating a positive conversation with a solution is always well received and avoids friction
If you could instantly become an expert at any skill or hobby, what would it be and why?
Languages I’m moving onto my third and it gets harder as you get older Aside from being able to communicate, language is the best way into another culture, an instant upload of a whole catalogue would be amazing!

What has been the most exciting or rewarding part of the POS project so far?
That part of the project is definitely yet to come, I’m really looking forward to working with the teams at each lodge to get this up & running and learning more about how each lodge across the group operates. I think it’s a great opportunity to share knowledge between lodges and learn from the incredible teams we have in the company.
If the POS project had a theme song, what would it be?
As much as I'd like to say something cool, the reality is it's probably 'The Long and Winding Road' by The Beatles. Most projects are less action and more persistence!.
Outside of work, what’s something people at Beckons might be surprised to learn about you?
I've lived and worked in some of Australia's most spectacular locations and been spoiled by great food around the world, but I still get disproportionately excited by a good pie! Something that I was surprised to learn is that New Zealand has far superior pies to home - lift your pie game Australia!

June was another incredible month at Clayoquot Wilderness Lodge as we settled into the second month of our 2026 season With the lodge in full swing, it has been a month filled with unforgettable adventures, meaningful connections, and countless special moments Every day has brought new opportunities to create lifelong memories, not only for our guests, but also for the amazing team who make the Clayoquot experience so special.
One of the highlights of the month was our second staff gathering of the season, the Barn Burner. These moments together are about much more than just having fun, they give our team the opportunity to reconnect, recharge, and celebrate the incredible work they do each day As the season gathers momentum, taking time to laugh, unwind, and enjoy each other's company helps remind us that while the days may be busy, looking after ourselves and one another is just as important.

A very special thank you goes to the Sovereign Partners Group, who stayed with us from Monday, June 8 to Thursday, June 11.
As first-time visitors to the lodge, it was a pleasure to welcome this wonderful group of Canadians to our little corner of paradise. Their genuine appreciation for the beauty of the Bedwell Valley and the experiences they shared with our team was truly heartwarming. Inspired by their time here and the incredible work being done to protect this special place, the group generously donated $25,000 to the Reddfish – Save the Bedwell Project. Their remarkable contribution will help restore the Bedwell River to its natural health and ensure it can be enjoyed by future generations. Through these restoration efforts, Reddfish will construct engineered log jams to help regulate water flow, plant native trees to stabilize the riverbanks and reduce erosion during the winter months, and create healthier spawning habitat for salmon as they continue their incredible annual journey upstream. We are incredibly grateful for Sovereign Partners Group's generosity and commitment to preserving the natural beauty that makes this place so special. Thank you for helping us protect the Bedwell River for generations to come

A special shout-out goes to our incredible helicopter pilots, Heli Dugge and Heli Blake, who have been keeping the skies busy all month long!
With helicopter demand reaching record levels this season, both pilots have gone above and beyond to ensure our guests continue to enjoy unforgettable adventures. Their dedication, professionalism, and commitment have been nothing short of exceptional This month also saw two remarkable milestones On June 17, Heli Dugge logged an impressive 9 4 hours of flying, followed by an incredible 10 5-hour day by Heli Blake on June 29. Both pilots have set new records for flight hours in a single day.

We were delighted to welcome our Senior Leadership Team - Michael, Craig, Zach, Courtney, Cherie, Alex, and Melinda, to the lodge at the end of May and into early June
