Discretion: the power or right to decide or act according to one’s own judgment; freedom of judgment or choice So often we look at dangerous environments such as quarries as unlivable and unusable spaces.

These environments are often a result of us pulling resources from the earth and/or dumping the ones we no longer have use for, and an abandoned quarry is often a combination of these things. But who is to say this is how these re-

sources and locations have to remain? We have the discretion to change what has once been done and reuse spaces that are otherwise unusable. This Analysis focuses on such an environment, the Highbury quarry, which is known for its use as a dumping ground and an unsafe environment to swim or utilize. Through this project various factors are investigated to find whether or not an otherwise abandoned space like this can be utilized effectively for residential or recreational purposes.

There are many factors for this site to be considered safe for use. Little is known about this site other than the high levels of sulphates found within the water source, the vast amounts of loose rock and rubble and the rubbish dumped from previous fly-tippers. On a practical note, it would require a vast amount of cleaning which for the site’s location would not be justified.

With that said however there is still the ability to analyze the site through the LIDAR model found on ELVIS. These details include the elevations to consider safety and usable spaces, temperature, the classification of what is surrounding the site, the illuminance and rainfall. These elements layered together produce a lattice of analysis to compare variations side by side, giving an accurate representation of all factors of the site.
