I

t was 8th September, 1997 (24 years exactly to the month!) that a brand-new publication on the streets of Bahrain together with that day’s edition of the Gulf Daily News. That first edition of Bahrain This Month magazine, which had three page sixty-threes, at least two page thirteeens and an unwarranted and unnecessary duplication of half a form, was the beginning of our journey in producing what was the first ever monthly English language magazine in Bahrain.

Our first ever cover boasted an image of ‘Boyzone in Bahrain’ provided by none other than one of our lead interviews this month, the incredibly successful Anglo-Bahraini woman entrepreneur, Eliza Murtaza, the founder of Mirage promotions, who made that image available to us. Through the eyes of her daughter, we take a look into her life and how she changed the face of the live entertainment industry in Bahrain as well as the entire region.

Our digital edition also takes a look at ‘Healthcare’ in Bahrain exploring some of the Kingdom’s finest health and fitness establishments. We interview the Chief Resident of SMC Accident and Emergency Department, Dr. Cheriyan P.V – a stalwart leader within Bahrain’s healthcare sector who talks about the latest developments in the healthcare system, Bahrain’s internationally-recognised efforts to combat COVID-19, his illustrious career and more. For our main feature, we delve into the specialties of trusted hospitals, medical clinics and a select group of physical wellness practitioners.

LIFE IN THE DEEP END

T

hese are the words of the award-winning Bahraini marine photographer, Hani Bader – the man behind several captivating photographs that mesmerise the masses near and far.

While few have the sheer grit and determination to venture into the very depths of the ocean, even fewer have the ability to capture what lies beneath. “It’s a family thing.

All members of my family are passionate about the sea and most of them, just like me, work in the same field; it’s more of a joint life and work thing,” he says.

“So, it’s been in our blood since childhood, as my home town is an island and we used to go on many sea trips and swim at all times,” he adds.

Since having his first experience with diving well over 20 years ago, Hani didn’t just develop an interest in marine photography… he perfected it. “I started diving back in 1997 but ventured on my journey into the world of underwater photography back in 2003 and it 8 September 2021

has been my passion and addiction ever since,” he says.

Hani’s first camera was a “point and shoot” camera - a gift from his father and the reason he pursued photography. “From there I used my first DSLR camera as well as the underwater housing in 2010 when I actually started to put my knowledge into practice,” he explains, adding that his daily routine includes browsing the internet for new tips, techniques, information, tools and market updates.

“I try my best to stay up-to-date with all that is related to underwater photography. I also try my best to go diving at least once a week and travel at least twice a year for dives,” he says.

Hani has steadily developed his marine photography skills and has since been involved in several research projects regarding the marine environment and marine life. “My subjects include everything - from moving creatures to lifeless wrecks, but what I consider to be one of my most interesting and memorable photographs is the scene of the

jellyfish with the Socotra cormorant taken in Bahrain,” he says of the award-winning photograph depicting the beautiful bird right in the middle of a smack of jellyfish.

“Capturing that scene back in May of 2014 as they gathered in large numbers has to be one of the most memorable experiences I have had on a dive. I was stunned by the scene and thrilled to have succeeded in capturing it,” he continues.

Hani has received numerous local and international awards and accolades and notably placed first in the Our World Underwater Competition (2014), University of Miami Underwater Photo Contest (2015), Batelco photography contest - BahrainEye3 (2015). He also placed second at the Underwater Photographer of the Year, London (2015), and received a gold medal at the Hamdan bin Rashid al Maktoum Photography Awards (2016).

Hani’s photography and documentation has been instrumental in monitoring the status of the marine environment in the Kingdom. “I have participated in a number of researches in collaboration with international and local crews regarding the marine life. Major research was conducted on sharks and dugongs in the region and another research project was conducted about the artificial reefs,” he states.

“Also, whatever we notice during our regular dive trips including rare incidents, violations, or concerns are documented and reported to the authorities. This in turn is shared with the public through social media in order to raise public awareness with regards to preserving and protecting these national resources,” he explains.

The public’s role in maintaining the cleanliness of the shore and sea is essential when it comes to preserving the marine environment. “We often rescue creatures that are trapped in trash.

Another thing the public needs to do is watch what they catch as some creatures are rare and need to be protected. Fishing shouldn’t be a fun activity done at the expense of a protected creature,” he says, adding that if followed diligently, these steps are sure to improve the condition of the environment on a great scale.

With regards to challenges faced when out and about on dives, Hani believes it all depends on nature. “To explain further, the weather would dictate if you can dive or not, the water visibility would affect the quality of the photos and you might miss out on many great scenes due to that. Finally, and most importantly, your subject matters - the sea creatures. It all depends on whether or not they allow you to take the shot in the first place as some are shy and others are so fast to catch on camera, not to mention the risk when dealing with some,” he explains.

“Underwater photography is more of a surprise journey. You don’t lead, you are just a witness of what nature is allowing you to reveal. You might get an award-winning shoot or simply go back empty-handed,” he concludes.

MAKING EVENTS HAPPEN

The founder of Mirage Promotions, Elissa Murtaza, is credited with having revolutionised the entertainment industry in Bahrain and the region. Here’s a look into her rise to success as written by Nadia Murtaza-Malt.

T

here are several things you think when looking into Elissa Murtaza’s piercing blue eyes. Some people might see traces of an exciting, unusual and almost unimaginable life, but for me, I see the woman I know best - my mother. Mirage Promotions and Live Nation are the names of businesses that people have heard in passing over the last 30 years. For Elissa Murtaza, these words are her legacy.

Elissa started her career in live entertainment in a marketing position at a Radio Station in Liverpool, which was home to The Beatles, when she found herself leaving a prestigious Art College in order to pursue her career. A young Elissa crossed paths with the likes of a very early U2 whilst working in Radio, and you could say, her fate in the music industry was set to sky rocket in the same way U2’s was destined to.

On a hope and whim Elissa took a plunge moving to an island in the Middle East that, at the time, was unknown and exotic – Bahrain, leaving behind the established hustle and bustle of a music-centric Liverpool in 1980. Still new to the industry, Elissa started what was the beginning of an evolutionary story to Live Entertainment the day she met a London-based talent booker who took her under his wing. She found herself booking everything from comedians to Motown artists, introducing a whole new world of nightlife sub-culture to the island.

A few years on, Elissa was making her mark on an untouched gap in the market, primarily in nightclubs which would evolve into something of a much grander scale. “I noticed that the market was eager to experience bigger bands and better

production, that would mean taking the emphasis away from small venues who had budgetary limitations and were risk adverse.

So, I had to educate myself ground up on how to become a commercial concert promoter,” says Elissa.

“I realised I had to make a profit as well as produce an amazing concert,” she adds. That was when she established her own concert promoting and booking company - Mirage Promotions, in 1994 – with the ultimate aim of revolutionising commercial live entertainment in Bahrain and the region.

The beginnings of Mirage Promotions were incomparable to its ultimate destiny. “After gradually undertaking smaller live concerts, we produced Status Quo at the Holiday Inn before finally opening up the country to a steady stream of teen idols starting with Boyzone,” she said, reflecting on the company’s beginnings. “That was to be the start of a whirlwind of sold-out nights with

the stars of that time.”

As many could testify, the excitement on the island was euphoric, as fans of all ages eagerly awaited the next announcement of who Mirage Promotions would present next; and Elissa always rose to the occasion. In many ways, it changed Bahrain forever.

Once Elissa had a firm grasp of introducing live ticketed events to an otherwise untouched industry in the region, she set her sights on growing her humble brand and expanding to Dubai. “After a surge of investment and fast growth in Dubai, I noticed an opportunity and became the first concert promoter with two fully staffed offices, opening Mirage Promotions Dubai in 1997. This ultimately sent our potential up several gears and because of this profile we were able to undertake bigger events, in larger venues which in turn attracted A-list artists,” she explains.

interview Regardless of effectively and unintentionally monopolising both: Bahrain and Dubai, Elissa understood the complexities involved on the business side of what appeared to most as an intensely glamourous career. “Mirage was built on a solid foundation of relationships and corporate partners, without that a significant number of big names would not have played in the region. From the late 1990’s onwards we attracted the sort of artists who would generally have skipped the region had it not been for corporate support - Alicia Keys, Mariah Carey, Destiny’s Child, Enrique, to name a few,” she says, modestly crediting sponsorship strategy and partnerships for her long-term success.

As their reputation of reliability, longevity and professionalism grew, Mirage promotions caught the attention of corporations and governmental entities seeking high calibre entertainment for their different programs. “It wasn’t long before we found ourselves undertaking talent booking on behalf of airlines to fulfill VIP gala events to promote global destinations- booking major performers everywhere from Venice to Houston, to Washington DC and everywhere in between,” she says.

With the growth of corporate relationships near and far, the natural progression of geographical scale began. “It was exciting to break new markets, by the mid 2000’s we were the indisputable leading talent booking and concert promotions agency in the region, we were in demand in Egypt, Lebanon, Greece, Turkey and Africa. During this prolific period, we were responsible for the touring of Aerosmith, Duran Duran, Ricky Martin, Shakira, Phil Collins, Santana and leading classical artists such as Jose Carreras and Placido Domingo,” she reminisces.

solidified its place in the international live music industry. “Our major turning point was when the US entertainment giant Live Nation, which is based in Los Angeles, approached us to buy a stake in Mirage. Over the years we had become their preferred partner in the region and as they expanded their operation across the globe, Mirage was to become their flagship operation in the region,” she says of a moment that changed everything.

In 2007 Elissa agreed to sell 65 percent to Live Nation and remained as Managing Director and Partner within the newly branded company, Live Nation Middle East, with its office in Dubai. “It was in essence basically a change of name because the business was already very established and far ahead of any competitors. The partnership was cementing what already was a long and successful collaboration. Mirage had come a long way from a small office in Bahrain,” she says.

One of Elissa’s biggest personal successes was in 2005. “I was very privileged to be selected

by Mathew Knowles to exclusively represent his daughter and superstar, Beyonce, as her booking agent for the Middle East, Africa and Greece. This appointment led to a number of fantastic Beyonce concerts in the territories I was responsible for. During a four-year period, this led Beyoncé to perform in Ethiopia, UAE, Egypt, Nigeria, Greece and at a significant number of private engagements across the region,” she says.

Mirage was also hired by This Day publications in Lagos, Nigeria to book talent for a groundbreaking annual festival there. “During those years we were responsible for booking and festival management, bringing Rihanna, Beyonce, Jay Z, Kanye West, Snoop Dog, Mary J Blige and 50 Cent, to name a few,” she says.

After several years of unconditional hard work and momentous obstacles that were overcome – Mirage came to a fork in the road that www.bahrainthismonth.com

interview The complexity of that achievement was to further ensure that the Gulf would always feature in the global touring plans of major artists such as Madonna, Coldplay and ironically in a full circle - U2. That fork in the road led to a seemingly never-ending list of the world’s biggest names, best known talents and undeniable superstars, but true to form, Elissa reminded us of her original business strategy, sponsorship and partnership.

“Becoming Live Nation Middle East opened new doors in commercial, corporate and government sectors. We forged a long and successful partnership with Flash Entertainment in Abu Dhabi, assisting them to book talent for their calendar of events including Guns n Roses, Christina Aguilera, The Killers, Eric Clapton and the talent for the Yas Island Abu Dhabi F1 Grand Prix,” she says

Elissa’s work from Mirage Promotions to Live Nation has been recognised with awards over the years including ‘Best Concert in the UAE’ for several years. “We never forgot our roots and continued to promote under our own banner as Live Nation Middle East,” she adds.

Elissa has since retired from her role at Live Nation. After a lifetime of having the best teacher, I walked in my mother’s footsteps and launched my own concert booking company - a notable success in the region until I relocated to Australia. My mum, despite her fiercely driven strategic business mind has taught me to always strive to achieve the seemingly impossible; which in essence, is exactly what she did, whether she believes it or not. A strong, indisputable woman who

thrived in a region and industry where she would have been expected to flounder.

For those of us who were lucky enough to witness the Mirage Promotions era of Bahrain as kids, teenagers and young adults, we can testify that it changed the pop-culture of the country forever, creating a new culture, for a new generation; epitomising a moment in time that can never be replicated. More than anything, my mum started her career in Bahrain. From Bahrain she flourished into regional dominance. There were many that told her she couldn’t do it, or stood in her way, but she walked her own path.

She still walks to the beat of her own drum, and here are her words for you, in her trademark business model. “The advice I would give to anyone thinking of entering this industry as a commercial concert promoter is teach yourself every aspect of what it is to be a promoter including venue management, production installation, advertising, sponsorship and marketing. If you don’t have all the skills, you don’t hold the power. Delegating is great but only after you know the task yourself,” “Never lose sight of the profit and loss and remind yourself that selecting talent is based on market preferences and not your personal taste. Most of all give the fans a fantastic event but don’t lose sight of the fact that you are in it to make money too. I am incredibly impressed and excited to see what the future of live music in Bahrain holds.

With decades of experience practicing medicine in the Kingdom of Bahrain, the Chief Resident of the Salmaniya Medical Complex (SMC) Accident and Emergency Department, and Governing Council Member of Bahrain Medical Society, Dr. P.V. Cheriyan is no stranger to the Kingdom of Bahrain’s healthcare sector. He sheds some light on the latest developments in Bahrain’s healthcare, the Kingdom’s noteworthy response to COVID-19 and awareness campaigns.

You have had a long and illustrious career in healthcare in the Kingdom of Bahrain. Can you tell our readers about your start in the medical field in Bahrain?

Having started working at the Accident & Emergency Department from 16th October 1979, I have completed my career of nearly 42 years in the medical field in Bahrain. Other than treating patients, I was also administrative resident – in charge of duty list, salary, overtime and other benefits of over 50 doctors in the department from 1987 till 2012, and was also responsible for GOSI – General Organisation of Social Insurance – for workers due to occupational injuries.

Aside from this, I was also medical co-ordinator of all national and international events at Bahrain – including F1 and all events at Bahrain International Circuit from 2004 till 2019, football matches, GCC meetings, visits of dignitaries etc. I was also, notably, a member of the Medical Team of Late Prime Minister, HRH Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa, from 2012 to 2020.

As a doctor who has practiced medicine in the Kingdom of Bahrain for several years, what are your thoughts on the strides that the Kingdom has made in healthcare?

Bahrain has made tremendous progress in the healthcare sector for the last few years. Here we have a strong network of primary, secondary and tertiary care system – over 30 primary health centers, government and private hospitals providing world class healthcare to the residents. I have witnessed the tremendous improvements in infrastructure, manpower, facilities, latest modern equipment etc.

You are an active member of the Cancer Care group. Could you highlight the group’s activities, collaborations and community outreach programme?

The Cancer Care Group, affiliated with Bahrain Cancer Society, has been actively involved in various activities to support the needy section of the society – not only taking care of Cancer victims, but also for various lifestyle diseases like Diabetes, Hypertension, Stroke, Obesity, and also Psychological and Psychiatric illnesses. We work closely with various Ministries including Health, Labour and Social Development, Education, Interior etc.

interview There are several activities that the group carries out. For instance, we conduct awareness lectures at schools, universities, clubs and associations, businesses and more to prevent the spread of diseases. We also conduct regular medical checkups and screening programs in addition to seminars, conferences and lectures.

We promote medical tourism to various destinations where needy patients can get affordable healthcare, and conduct hospital visits on a weekly basis and offer support to them. We have been actively participating in the heat illness prevention drive for workers under the Ministry of Labour and Social Development in collaboration with various embassies, Indian Community Relief Fund (ICRF) -for workers and employers of various labour camps – providing them with a medical checkup, health talks and presenting them with gifts too for several years.

How has the healthcare system of Bahrain adapted to combat obesity-related illnesses?

Obesity and other life style diseases are rising drastically. Periodic screening and checking procedures, counseling on proper diet and need for exercise, avoiding high calorie and fast foods have been stressed by healthcare practitioners.

We also have a lot of healthcare facilities in the Kingdom to take care of patients – we have excellent government hospitals like Salmaniya Medical Complex, King Hamad University Hospital, BDF Hospital, an excellent cardiac care center at Awali and many private medical centers and hospitals.

What are your thoughts on the Kingdom of Bahrain’s response to the outbreak of COVID-19?

The Kingdom of Bahrain stands in the forefront to combat COVID–19; through the guidance of The National Taskforce for Combating the Coronavirus under the able leadership of HRH the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Bahrain did a wonderful job even without implementing and imposing unnecessary restrictions among its citizens such as curfews or lockdowns.

Many centers were swiftly established to do nasal swabbing for diagnostic purposes. In addition, various vaccines were available from numerous countries and were given to both: nationals and expatriates free of charge. Many health care facilities including field ICUs with equipment like ventilators were established.

What were some of the precautions taken at the Accident and Emergency Department during the outbreak?

To start, specific areas were designed for the isolation of COVID-19 patients. Three floors out of six at SMC were earmarked to treat COVID cases. All staff were also provided with adequate masks, PPE (Personal Protection Equipment) and necessary medications.

After a long hiatus, schools are reopening and accepting students on campus in Bahrain. As a medical practitioner, what are your thoughts on this?

It is the need of the hour to open schools so that children will start to learn in a social atmosphere, mingle and interact with their peers and teachers, get involved in curricular and co-curricular activities, sports and social activities too. As we are taking adequate COVID-19 protocols and preventative measures, we do not have to be unnecessarily anxious and worried.

Do you have any thoughts on the success of the vaccination campaign in Bahrain?

Bahrain is one of the countries which started the vaccination campaign well in advance – after the initial three phases of vaccination testing. We started the vaccination campaign, initially administering them to high-risk patients with comorbidities and later to adults of all age groups. Now they have started vaccinations to pregnant ladies, lactating mothers and children. A large portion of the population has been vaccinated. The Embassy of India also took the initiative to vaccinate those without proper documents who were unable to register. We are proud that Bahrain has vaccinated a majority of its population, created a herd immunity and has almost contained the virus.

COVID-19 is said to have lingering health implications in individuals who have recovered from the virus. What would be your advice to those who have recovered?

Post Covid Syndrome or the “Long Covid” after recovery from COVID-19 can bring about a lot of complications – both physical and psychological. The heart, brain, lungs, kidney and all vital organs may be involved. It can bring in fatigue, depression, and can even lead to morbidity and mortality.

What are some of the main changes or developments that have taken place at the Accident and Emergency Department over the last 5 years?

A Far East Asian Feast at Bo.Sabi Here’s why Farah Baig thinks Bo.Sabi’s food and vibe are sure to make it a favourite on Bahrain’s dining scene.

W

ord on the street was that The Diplomat Radisson Blu Hotel, Residence & Spa had a fresh new Asian cuisine concept restaurant. We’d heard that its ambience was as vibrant and tantalising as its menu so we chose to check it out.

Bo.Sabi. The name itself was enough to grab our attention, and as we walked through the restaurant doors, we soon realised that it had the atmosphere to match. The restaurant is tastefully decorated and has laid-back, contemporary vibe which is perfect for a night out with friends. With its high-ceiling, choice of indoor or outdoor seating, windows overlooking the garden and pool, and vibrant music, Bo.Sabi is sure to be a favourite on Bahrain’s social scene.

After being seated at a large table, we were soon served our starters – Tuna Salad, Crab Meat Salad and Vietnamese Spring Rolls. Bo.Sabi created a wonderful first impression with its Crab Meat Salad which is made from freshly flaked crab as opposed to surimi – seafood connoisseurs are sure to appreciate this detail. The crab salad is served with a fresh dressing and perfectly balanced with creamy avocado. The Tuna Salad is an excellent choice for those who appreciate the flavour of fresh tuna as it’s seared and has a firm texture. We enjoyed the light flavours of the lemongrass, kaffir lime leaves and chili which perfectly complemented the fish.

After washing down our starters with one of Bo.Sabi’s funky mocktails – Ginger Fizz, we moved on to colourful platters of nigiri, sashimi and maki. The platters make for an excellent choice when you’d like to sit back, enjoy some banter and savour quintessential Japanese food. While www.bahrainthismonth.com

we enjoyed each and every element of the platters, what stood out to us the most was the Shrimp nigiri which is topped with raspberry, which adds an interesting tang, and a little dollop of caviar.

Next up was the Lamb Chop Teppanyaki which is served with vegetable fried rice, Asian herbs and black pepper sauce. It was beautifully cooked and had a (quite literal) sweet touch with its caramelised potato chips. One of our favourite vegetarian mains was the Tofu Manchurian which offered a perfect punch of familiar Asian flavours to reinvigorate our palette. The tofu was soft and silky and generously coated in a thick gravy, spring onions, garlic, bell peppers and more. This was followed by a light Seafood Red Curry which was ladled with fresh mussels, clams and shrimp.

It was light and went perfectly with the steamed jasmine rice. To top off our savoury dishes, we enjoyed the Pad Thai and seared Salmon.

For dessert, we enjoyed the Thai Mango Sticky Rice which is a classic at any restaurant serving Far East Asian cuisine. The Vatiatalipan was extremely inviting; the dish of pudding was topped with crunchy caramelised cashew nuts and served with a side of fresh tropical fruit – we relished it to the very last bite. To end our experience, we tucked into the variety of mochi icecream which were flavoured and coated in a variety of ingredients like black sesame, coconut and matcha.

Dining at Bo.Sabi in good company easily evokes images of being in a tropical paradise. After our experience, we’re convinced that Bo.Sabi is one of Bahrain’s most exciting new dining venues!

GRAND THEFT AUTO

Ever wondered which cars are the most stolen? Or perhaps the ROI for the previously stolen ‘Most Favourite Car in the World’? Dick Potter finds out.

I start this month’s article with a note of gratitude - and sincerely hope that I am not tempting fate with it! We’ve been very lucky not to have been the victim of auto theft - see mention about not tempting fate. We have had a vehicle broken into a few times, another story for another day - but, car theft, fortunately not.

My ancient motorbike was once stolen from outside our house in Adliya but thankfully turned up unscathed at the Isa Town Traffic Directorate compound a few months later; that was traumatic enough for me. So, for the owner of a stolen automobile, traumatic would be a slight understatement, I should imagine.

I write of car theft this month as an article I read recently concerned a James Bond Aston

Martin DB5 that went “missing” and has apparently been “found”. The Aston was stolen 25 years ago from a private plane hangar in Boca Raton Florida. This, or one of them that was used in the movie Goldfinger and Thunderball was equipped with ejector seats, tyre shredders, machine guns and other such essential gadgetry. More importantly, it began the relationship between Aston and 007 which still endures today. MAINTAINING A STRONG MOMENTUM

Ferrari has announced its consolidated preliminary results for the second quarter and six months ended June 30, 2021.

Shipments totalled 2,685 units in the second quarter of 2021, up 1,296 units or 93.3% versus the prior year quarter, which was heavily impacted by the disruptions of the COVID19 pandemic, including production and delivery suspension during the initial part.

Sales of eight-cylinder models (V8) were up 111.2%- and 12-cylinder models (V12) were up 37.6%. The deliveries of the quarter were driven by the F8 family and the 812 GTS together with the SF90 Stradale and the Ferrari Roma, which reached global distribution. The Ferrari Monza SP1 and SP2 continued to be delivered in line with planning.

The first deliveries of the new Ferrari Portofino M commenced in the quarter.

All geographic regions positively contributed in the quarter. EMEA was up 89.4%, Americas increased 70.3%, Mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan posted a strong 564.0% performance, boosted by the arrival of new models and accentuated by an easy comparison versus prior year(5) , and Rest of APAC(4) surged by 92.4%.

FRAUD PREVENTION AWARENESS AT THE FOREFRONT The Bahrain Association of Banks (BAB) announced its collaboration with NGN International, a full-fledged systems integrator and IT consultant, to promote the awareness of electronic fraud operations among institutions and individuals in Bahrain.

The two parties will cooperate to implement several workshops within the activities of the NGN Majlis, and #Be_Careful campaign launched and implemented by the Bahrain Association of Banks.

These workshops address several topics including SMS as a means of authenticating online accounts, email security, protecting company data, and cybersecurity.

Chairman of the Bahrain Society of the Private Training Institutes (BSPTI), Nawaf Mohammed Al Jishi, believes that Bahraini training institutes are a key partner in implementing the national plan for the labour market for the years 2021 through to 2023.

Bahrain’s financial wealth grew by a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 4.9% from 2015 to reach a high of USD 69 billion in 2020 – 75 percent of which is investable wealth – as Bahrain’s market showed resilience in the face of the protracted COVID-19 pandemic, according to a new report by Boston Consulting Group (BCG).

“Training institutes play a great role in achieving the goals of this plan in reviewing and evaluating Bahrainisation rates in all private-sector establishments and updating them according to the variables and indicators of the labour market to boost the preference for hiring Bahrainis without affecting the workflow of the establishments,” said Mr. Al Jishi.

The Bahrain Society of the Private Training Institutes, which is the only official umbrella for training institutes in Bahrain, has expressed its openness to further discussions with the Ministry of Labour and Social Development to activate the role of training institutes as a cornerstone of the national plan in order to empower job seekers.

The report, titled ‘Global Wealth 2021: When Clients Take the Lead’, reveals that despite the pandemic’s enduring financial impact, global prosperity and wealth grew significantly throughout the crisis and are likely to continue to expand significantly over the next five years, in line with the emerging economic recovery.

A RISE IN PROFITS GFH Financial Group B.S.C has announced its financial results for the first six months of the year ended 30 June 2021. The Group reported net profit attributable to shareholders of USD20.92 million for the second quarter of the year up 109.8 percent when compared with USD 9.97 million for the second quarter of 2020. The increase reflects strong performance across business lines despite the ongoing impact worldwide of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Earnings per share for second quarter was US cents 0.68 compared to US cents 0.30 for the comparative quarter of 2020. Total income for the second quarter of 2021 was USD 90.62 million compared to USD 77.07 million for the second quarter of 2020, a rise of 17.6

percent. Consolidated net profit for the second quarter was USD 24.81 million compared with USD 13.60 million in the second quarter of 2020, an increase of 82.3 percent.

Major contributions for the second quarter of 2021 included income generated from the Group’s investment banking and placement activities, its financing portfolio and treasury income as well as higher contributions from its increased stake, acquired during the quarter, in Khaleeji Commercial Bank, the Group’s commercial banking subsidiary. he recent United Nations report on climate change has added to the already building momentum on the urgent need to be environmentally mindful. Clearly the idea that we all need to be environmentally conscious is very far from new. However, it often seems like everything has an environmental impact and it can be a little overwhelming to think of where to begin. In analysing climate change and implications, I had a similar issue – the issues are way too many. So this month, I decided to focus on one that I feel has the maximum potential in the GCC region i.e. renewable energy or more specifically solar energy.

By definition renewable energy is any energy that is indefinitely available with limited risks of running out. This usually

encompasses energy in naturally occurring elements and therefore refers to energy generated using wind, biomass, water and the sun.

As per the Department of Energy (USA)1, the amount of sunlight that strikes the earth›s surface in an hour and a half is enough to handle the entire world›s energy consumption for a full year. Geographically, solar energy is the easiest step for the GCC region. This is evident with the significant strides that have been made recently. Dubai is expected to see the completion of Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park worth USD 4.3 billion. Photovoltaic (PV) Independent Power Producer (IPP) project which, once operational, will generate enough electricity for 16,000 homes in the UAE through its four million solar panels.

The question which then comes to mind is what is Photovoltaic and how is solar energy actually used.

Photovoltaic (PV) is one of two primary methods to harness solar energy. Solar panels are made up of numerous PV cells which absorb natural solar energy and store it and transmit it as programmed. For larger energy needs, Concentrated Solar Power Systems (CPS) that use mirrors to concentrate natural solar energy are used to transmit energy to driver turbines or engines that create electricity.

Even though it’s an obvious choice, solar energy utilisation is a complex and expensive system and that too in a cost competitive environment. The soft cost of generating solar energy can be quite high. In a mature market like the United States, hardware comprises only about 34 percent of the costs while the soft costs can account for up to 66 percent of the total costs2. electricity is generated, it is then sold to power grids based on long term agreements known as power purchase agreements. Once a deal is signed, its locked in for around 25 years.

Bahrain has also been taking a number of steps towards increasing solar energy usage. Solar One is the country’s first solar panel manufacturing facility that has a capacity of 60,000 panels per year. For generation, private solar generation plants are gaining popularity for specific projects. Recently, the Formula 1 track of Bahrain has tendered a 3MW PV solar project for which five firms have submitted bids. Bahrain Mall is slated to have a 6MW power plant to be designed and maintained by Dubai-based Yellow Door Energy and has the potential to reduce carbon emissions by 6,300 tonnes annually3.

Solar energy is a small drop in the ocean of things we can do to save our planet – but for the drive to come from industry, there needs to be incentive. Survival incentive or economic incentive. Its appears like firms and individuals are learning to evaluate the intangible and tangible costs alike. It’s a step in a direction we inevitably all have to take.

Mario Golf: Super Rush is a golf video game developed by Camelot Software Planning and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo Switch. It is the sixth instalment in the Mario Golf series following Mario Golf: World Tour in 2014 and is part of the larger Mario franchise. The game features various characters from the Mario franchise competing in golf, with regular competition and other modes.

GAMEPLAY

The fundamental gameplay is comparable to previous entries in the Mario Golf series. Through traditional golf rules, the player’s primary objective is to get the ball into each hole with the fewest possible number of strokes, using the various golf clubs available to them. Multiple tools are available to players for strategic benefit, such as the ‘Shot Gauge’ showing the direction and the curve of the ball against slopes and the scan feature, which allows the player to better assess the elevation of terrain. The game offers both conventional button controls for taking shots and motion controls to simulate hitting the ball with a swing.

GRAPHICS

There are six courses in total, which isn’t a huge amount (especially when compared to World Tour, which had 10) but at least they offer variety. The super sandy Balmy Dunes will test your approach play, while Wildweather Woods has (you guessed it) wild weather to contend with. They’re each visually appealing in their own ways, and while Super Rush doesn’t look like a top-tier Nintendo game graphically, it bursts with colour – especially when playing in handheld mode.

CURVED SPACE

Curved Space is an intense arcade-style twin-stick shooter that takes the classic formula and plunges it into the weirdest reaches of space. Battle cosmic space-invading spiders across curved landscapes where bullets hug the terrain while the horizon drops sharply out of sight.

A heartfelt and poignant statement

What’s the story?

Less than a year after the release of their critically acclaimed sixth album, Imploding the Mirage, the Killers return with the melancholic Pressure Machine. The album originated during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic when The Killers recognised that the planned Imploding the Mirage world tour would have to be postponed. The Killers embraced the idea of a concept record based on Brandon Flower’s childhood. Drummer Ronnie Vannucci Jr. described the choice by saying: “But the sky was falling and we were hit with this emotion – especially Brandon. We wanted to do something following that feeling. I remember him saying, ‘Follow me down this road’. We put those songs to the side and embarked on something new and fresh.

That’s what became ‘Pressure Machine’.”

Refuge Longtime friends and collaborators Devendra Banhart and Noah Georgeson had long discussed their shared love of this particular sect of ambient music, and toyed with the idea of making an album. When the COVID-19 pandemic took hold in March of 2020, Banhart and Georgeson used their time in quarantine to finally realise this dream, collaborating remotely on the sounds that became Refuge. The 12 pieces that make up the album are almost entirely instrumental, and for the most part follow the design of the ‘80s new age material that inspired the project. Refuge sounds composed, thoughtful, and intimate, with reflections on pain, grief, acceptance and relief.

Antidotes Like many performers who seem to arrive out of nowhere fully-formed, Lucinda Chua’s artistry took a while to come to fruition. Chua was a well-regarded collaborator and prior to that, Chua was one half of the underappreciated experimental chamber pop duo Felix, whose albums hinted at the gift for expressing hard-to-pin-down moods she demonstrates so brilliantly on Antidotes. Though Chua was in no rush to start her solo career, it was worth waiting for her – Antidotes is a striking reintroduction to a musician who has been on the margins for far too long.

The album is a stark rumination on small-town life set to the most pensive, yet touching soundscapes in their catalogue to date. This is not a typical Killers album: stripped of their typical Vegas bombast, rousing anthems, and glittering showmanship, the set reveals the dark side of the Sam’s Town trailer park, a place of depression, fundamentalism, desperation and violence.

This matured focus on concept and mood saves the album from becoming an odd misstep, serving instead as a dignified artistic exercise that rewards the band’s bravery by becoming the most heartfelt and poignant statement of their careers. www.bahrainthismonth.com

At first glance, Noor Yousif Taha might seem like your typical teenager. However, at just 15-years-old, this young woman has gone above and beyond having represented the Kingdom of Bahrain at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

After years of diligent training, the Bahraini swimmer put on a stellar performance at the Olympics - breaking her personal record in the 50-metre freestyle by finishing in 28:87 seconds to take the fifth place in her heat. Her best time prior to the Olympics was 29:42 seconds.

Noor’s performance at the Olympics was exemplary but few know the story behind the young athlete’s debut into the world of swimming. “I got into the competitive scene of swimming when I was seven years old, but I first tried my hand at it when I was just four.

When I first joined, my intention was simply to learn how to swim, but soon after I decided I want this hobby to be a part of my life doing something I very much enjoy and representing my country in the process,” says Noor.

Following her performance at the World Junior Swimming Championships in Budapest, Hungary, Noor was invited by The Fédération Internationale de Natation (FINA) to participate at the Olympic games for which she was supported by the Bahrain Swimming Association. “Training sessions were put on hold multiple times due to COVID-19 which definitely had a negative impact at the time, but thankfully we were able to get back on track and begin training,” she says.

Prior to the Olympics, the young athlete went through three training sessions spread throughout the day. “I had my swimming training in the morning and at night, and a dry land training session in the afternoon.

that,” she says.

“The training was rough and tiring, but I had a goal in mind, and I knew it’s not meant to be a walk in the park. So, I had to push through it all with complete focus and finesse,” adds Noor.

Speaking of the experience representing the Kingdom at what is considered to be the most prestigious sporting event worldwide, Noor expresses her immense happiness and pride. “Seeing that all my hard work was paying off, I felt an excitement I can’t describe when I found out that I was representing my beloved country at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics,” she says.

The next major events for which Noor is training are the Arab Championship Short Course and the World Championship Short Course which will both take place in Abu Dhabi. “My family, friends, coaches and the entire organisation played a huge role in supporting me to get to where I am today. They have been my biggest supporters throughout my journey as an athlete,” she says.

“The next step, of course, is training for the Paris 2024 Olympics,” she concludes tenaciously.

“Five years ago, I would have never seen myself participating in the Olympics, but today, I believe with enough hard work and dedication I can achieve much more. It was also a very insightful journey, I got to see other Olympians’ techniques and how they trained,” she adds.

As a young, accomplished athlete in Bahrain, Noor intends to further pursue a career in sporting and swimming. “Anything is possible when you want it bad enough. I wish to be a successful athlete with record-breaking results - not an easy task in anyway, but I know for a fact that with enough blood, sweat and tears I will one day achieve my ultimate goal,” she says with unwavering determination.

She strongly urges young women, much like herself, to pursue a career in sports should they wish to. “Find your passion and dedicate all your energy and power into understanding and perfecting it. There will be those who doubt you, and people that will laugh at all your ambitions; shut the door on those people and use everything they say to push you forward,” she says.

A COVID-19 RETURN TO SCHOOL Educator, Julia Knight, explores how schools can prevent anxiety in students upon their return to school.

As we edge closer to the end of the pandemic, many of us hope that things have changed for the better. For many the pandemic has encouraged us all to revaluate what is important. This has certainly been the case in education. Schools were very quick to adapt to legislation and mandates from the authorities about social distancing but are we ready for the consequences?

Socially distancing and school closures have increased anxiety and mental health concerns in young people; so, what can schools do to mitigate these side effects of the pandemic?

The answer is quite simple. Improve their break times. One aspect of education that has been vastly overlooked in recent times is the school day and the way in which it is

organised. Now I’m not talking about flexi hours for students or realising the dreams of teens and having a 10 am start time, but increasing opportunities for play and socialising.

Since the mid-90s, schools across the world have reduced their break times to accommodate more learning; to provide more time in a classroom, but should parents be concerned? On average the reduction has seen primary school children lose 45 minutes of playtime whilst secondary school children have lost 65 minutes per week. This research conducted by University College London Institute of Education looked at the impact on children’s wellbeing and found that the benefits of play or break time can be overwhelmingly positive.

As many teachers and parents know, there are aspects of life that cannot be taught in a classroom- social skills such as friendship and conflict management; leadership and team building skills through activities organised and led by students themselves. Then there is, of course, the physical exercise gains that are enormously beneficial to children - its impact isn’t just on physical health but mental health too.

In a study by Princeton University which was published in the Journal of Neuroscience, researchers found that more exercise increased calmness and reduced anxiety.

This is good news for learners - if anxiety is reduced, learning is likely to be more effective having a school-wide benefit and impact.

Education

Schools should provide outdoor and indoor spaces for children’s recreation that are sizeable and suitable. The spaces should provide opportunities for exercise such as a grassy area for ball games, climbing frames and other outdoor equipment to challenge children’s natural curiosity as well as spaces for quiet reflection.

Schools who value wellbeing also value and understand the impact and importance of recreation time too. Break times should provide opportunities for children to collect and eat their food, to chat with friends and to decompress from the previous session of learning. By increasing breaktimes, schools are providing longer periods of exercise and time away from studying so that children can enjoy school. If parents think back to their school days, what do they remember?

I am sure it wasn’t extra maths P2 Tuesdays but playing with their friends.

Independent schools in the UK have on average around 20% of the school day given to break times compared to 16% in the state sector. This is significant because international schools often model themselves on independent schools and parents expect similar outcomes academically.

Parents can ask questions such as how long is break? Where do the children eat? How much time do they have for playtime? What activities are in place for them to do?

Schools which have longer breaktimes are actually improving the wellbeing of the children in their care balancing social and emotional well-being with the academics.

The big news of kids physically going back to school may have thrown mammas into a tizzy over what to serve them in the mornings, especially if you prefer to give your youngsters a hot breakfast over cereal most days of the week.

Let the struggle to scramble out of the door in time not give you the jitters (you may feel a bit out of touch with the once-familiar school run) with these make-ahead breakfast ideas that could save you time and a whole lot of hassle.

FREEZER FREINDLY BREAKFAST Not only are these healthy, easy to make and to eat in the mornings, but also make a QUESADILLAS fun cracker of a lunch when you’re short on time.

Ingredients: (for 1 quesadilla, serves 2) · 2 tortillas or large whole-wheat Flat bread · 1 tablespoon butter/cooking spray · 2 eggs · 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese · 2 tablespoons chopped turkey bacon, diced (or more, for a meatier quesadilla)

· 2 tablespoons canned sweet corn · 1 tablespoon each of onion, mushroom, green and red bell pepper, chopped

· salt to taste

Method 1. In a bowl, whisk together all the wet ingredients, except butter.

2. Coat a large skillet with cooking spray or 1 tablespoon of melted butter. (It will help to have a pan with a base the exact size of the tortilla).

3. Put one tortilla in the pan and let it sizzle slighty in the butter on medium heat.

4. Spoon the egg mixture onto the tortilla and let it set halfway through.

5. Top with the other tortilla, allowing it to stick to the egg mixture.

6. Cook over low heat for 1-2 minutes on each side or until the mixture is cooked through to your liking.

Cut into quarters. Place cool quesadilla portions into freezer bags and freeze till you need them. When ready to use, heat them in an oven or in the microwave (about 45 second – 60 second per serving).

BANANA BERRY MUFFINS These are ready in a jiffy when you have some time to spare, like over the weekend, and just the knowledge of having them in the freezer for breakfast on any weekday will give you a sense of calm and control. Plus, you get bonus points for serving a healthy morning meal to the kids.

Ingredients: (makes 12) · 3 ripe bananas (on the softer side) · A handful of blueberries or rasberries · 12 walnut halves · -1/2 cups all-purpose flour (or half-and-half with whole-wheat flour)

· 1 cup soft brown sugar · 1 teaspoon baking soda · 1/2 teaspoon salt · 1 large egg at room temperature · 1/3 cup vegetable oil (you can substitute half the quantity with unsweetened applesauce)

· 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Method 1. Combine dry ingredients in a large bowl.

2. Mash the bananas. Squeeze the berries lightly

with a fork, just till they are bruised and slightly opened up. Add to the mashed bananas.

3. Add egg, oil and vanilla; mix well.

4. Stir into the dry ingredients just until moistened.

Fill greased or paper-lined muffin cups half full.

5. Top each muffin cup with a walnut.

6. Bake at 180°C for about 20 minutes or until a

toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

Let the muffins sit for about 10 minutes outside the oven and then transfer them to a wire rack to bring to room temperature.

7. To freeze, pop into the freezer until solid (around 30 minutes) and then wrap each muffin with foil, place in an airtight freezer-safe container and stow away for up to 2 months.

The worst thing you can do is leave it to the last minute and hope your child will have a great first day at school… chances are this will not work! Having enough sleep is essential for anyone to function well during the day; however, many kids don't know enough about sleep and might even perceive it as a great big timeout where they're missing out on things. Hence the importance of having conversations about sleep with your kids to get them up to speed.

Before you start the conversation, make sure it is during a time when they are attentive and open to conversation, not tired or cranky. You also need to consider the following points:

1- Be Positive About Sleep

Make sure that younger children, especially, understand that sleep is a positive thing, and don't use the threat of bedtime as a punishment. Talk to your kids about how a lack of sleep can impact one's mood, health, and academic ability. Just as we teach our kids about the importance of eating healthy, we should teach them about the importance of sleeping healthy from an early age.

2- Empower Your Children with Choices

It's important to empower children with choices around bedtime because the one thing they can't have a choice in is the fact that they do need to go to sleep. They will be more accountable, more responsible, and hopefully, develop good sleep habits early in life if we empower them through simple choices. At least an hour before bedtime, screen time should come to an end, and other, more relaxing, activities can begin.

What is the biggest life lesson that your job has taught you?

Definitely being resilient.

Working with Hilton for six years has created the leader in me. Each day is an opportunity to learn something new. Being put through different situations every time, I learn, evolve, get stronger and my goal gets clearer. It may sound exhausting but it's actually quite fun. I love the challenge and I am so amazed at how women are slowly but steadily rising to leadership.

Her personal and professional experiences have made her the person that she is today, and she continues evolving into her best version every day.

Bags or shoes?

Definitely bags, they are my guilty pleasure and occupy most of my wardrobe!

Which is your favourite statement piece of clothing?

I love jackets, they can spice up any outfit.

Which place comes to mind when you hear the word travel?

Texas! I experienced different cultures, cuisines and I loved it during my stay there!

What is the best thing about being a woman?

I just love how women are strong and soft at the same time, how we are nurturing and yet firm leaders.

On a lighter note, fashion and cosmetics are definitely some of the perks.

Rihanna. She's an amazing artist and an even better entrepreneur!

Are you a home-body or an out-and-about girl?

What's the unusual thing in your bag?

I always need to bring a small notebook with me wherever I go to take notes in case an idea hit me. It is my piece of personal treasure.
