The ICRF Mega Medical Camp

Commemorating 75 years of Indian Independence, the Indian Community Relief Fund (ICRF) will conduct a year-long Mega Medical Camp in association with leading hospitals and medical centres. The mega medical camp aims to conduct medical checkups to over 5000 workers for 12 months. The inaugural function was held at the Middle East Hospital in Segaya in the presence of invited guests and members of the media.

Lulu Hypermarket’s ‘Let’s Eatalian’ Gastronomic Week Lulu Hypermarket inaugurated the ‘LET’S EATALIAN’ promotion at the Lulu Hypermarket in Atrium Mall, Saar. The event was inaugurated by the Ambassador of the Italian Republic to the Kingdom of Bahrain, HE Paola Amadei, alongside Lulu Group Director Juzer Rupawala. The event was supported by the Italian Trade Agency (ITA), Trade Promotion Section of the Italian Embassy in Bahrain.

elcome to the October issue. The Kingdom of Bahrain has effectively quelled the spread of COVID-19 within the community as we enjoy the opening of restaurants, schools, retail outlets and more. These are exciting times – a progress towards normality.

That being said, we’ve had an extremely exciting month here at Bahrain This Month. In our interview section, we had the pleasure of speaking to the young, Bahrain-based musician Ashwin ‘Xenai’ Shenoy who tells us about his experience at music school, his need to reinvent himself and insightful opinions on how Bahrain’s music scene could prosper.

In our dining section, you’ll find that our team has also collated a selection of the finest dining offerings at the best of hotels across Bahrain. We also had the pleasure of dining at Wyndham Garden Manama’s spectacular Indian restaurant- Jashan.

October is the month when BTM traditionally engages with the German community in the Kingdom of Bahrain to look at how relations are developing. In this regard, German Ambassador to the Kingdom of Bahrain, HE Kai Boeckmann, shed a light on the current status of trade, cultural exchange and more. We also sat down with a bright German innovator, Sebastian Wussler, who recently set up shop in Bahrain with an exciting fintech project that is sure to empower small businesses here. On the other hand, Hans Lamprecht, a distinguished diplomat with a globe-trotting career behind him is no stranger to the island; having fallen in love with the Kingdom’s culture and people to such an extent that he has now retired and lives here permanently.

In our Motoring section, Kristian Harrison looks at the many achievements and historical significance of German motoring brands in the industry. Meanwhile, business expert, Pria Masson Tanwar explores the industrial and commercial relations between Germany, Bahrain and more.

There’s plenty to enjoy in Woman This Month, too, as our fashion-forward team explores the trends on the runways of high-end fashion designers. Despite the challenges presented by COVID-19, the need for awareness for on-going healthcare issues like breast cancer remains. So, since October is breast cancer awareness month, we had a conversation with the founder of Think Pink Bahrain, Dr. Julie Sprakel, who tells us about the organisation’s 2021 campaign #DinarForDistance.

Renowned Bahrain-based musician, Ashwin ‘Xenai’ Shenoy’, talks about his journey with music with Farah Baig in this tellall. From taking a leap of faith to overcoming a life-changing physical challenge, a consistent need for inner discovery and more - we find out what makes Xenai an interstellar musician.

For those that are familiar with the region, Bahrain has long been known to be a bustling hub for creatives. Visionary artists, exuberant designers and masterful musicians have graced the Kingdom with creative works that they have poured their heart and soul into – masterpieces that drive your own thoughts and resonate with your emotions too.

WHO IS XENAI? Xenai ­– the name needs no introduction to most as this young musician has effectively mesmerised listeners in the Kingdom, and beyond, with his eclectic vibe and current sound with releases like Headphones and Walking on the Moon. “I would say my music is very much who I am as a person - the fact that I have a hard time finding where I come from and am also very distant from any particular cultural centre. I can’t say I’m either this

or that,” he says, adding that growing up in Bahrain has also played a huge role when it comes to inspiration.

He strongly believes that the cultural fabric of the Kingdom influences his music. “We’re in such close proximity to each other it’s hard to not be exposed to one another’s culture, way of life and more. So, being in the centre of it all I always felt like a nomad or an alien… floating from one thing to another. I truly feel like my music reflects that,” he explains.

His new releases are to be celestial in nature – each song being a planet explored. “That’s why you’ll start to see my new releases are all going to be planets because every song is a different world I enter and I try to share that and bring people on a journey of inner discovery. That’s where Alien from Inner Space comes from,” he says.

HIS JOURNEY WITH MUSIC “Music was always around me growing up,” he says.

“My dad would play the keyboard and tablas at parties while my maternal grandfather played the veena and participated at competitions. Then there were my neighbours who played everything from rock to hip hop.”

Inspired and surrounded by music, Xenai soon found solace in the guitar at the age of thirteen. “I started to, almost naturally, excel at it. This was of course with the guidance of my teachers: Manny from Room2Rock and Ramil from Bahrain Music Institute. Everyone in my life played a huge role in my musical upbringing,” he beams.

Like most people, he reached a crossroad when it was time to go off to university. “I excelled at Physics and design and loved the idea of architecture or industrial design, so I applied to a bunch of schools and ended up getting offered scholarships, but something didn’t feel right,” he says. “I knew in my gut that this wasn’t the path for me and told my parents I wanted to audition for Berklee and they freaked out.”

After changing their minds in his favour, Xenai applied to just one music college – Berklee. “I took a leap of

interview faith and it worked out,” he says triumphantly of what would be a rollercoaster ride of his life.

“It’s unlike going to any other regular college.

You eat, sleep and breathe music. Everything you talk about revolves around it and you never end the day when classes are done. You keep going till the late hours of the night either jamming, making music, practicing or going to recording sessions. Everyone was hungry to become the best,” he says. “It was competitive but there was a strong sense of community. We supported each other whenever we could. It definitely changed my life.”

THE BIG CHANGE Taken in by the thriving musical environment, he never anticipated the challenge he would face next. “I started to get an intense pain in my right shoulder, neck and back which I thought was just a passing feeling but it progressively got worse. I tried hard to practice, keep up with assignments, recitals and more but it all started to drop away,” he says of the experience that soon had him consulting healthcare professionals. “They eventually came to the conclusion that this was doing more harm to me than good.”

“The guitar was my passion. Imagine spending over 10 years on the instrument and giving it almost all your time. It being the whole reason I got into music and then have it taken away,” he says.

The experience left his mental health in a sorry state. “I was lost. It felt like I had no purpose anymore, but something amazing happened. I still wanted to create music and if I couldn’t play the guitar, I would find another way. I started making beats on my laptop, and writing my feelings on a notepad. It was completely out of my comfort zone but that was the birth of Xenai.”

I have big plans for this and I can’t wait for everyone to see it and hopefully be a part of it. You could say I’m building a legacy but I’d call it a galaxy! Aside from the planet concept, Xenai is working on the music video for a recently released song 7amdillah which was a collaboration with Bahraini musician, May Alqasim. “Right now, I am also working with Angelina Soon from Pop Tarts studio and Anton Miraj from Miraj Media for my upcoming music video Ugly, which is being directed by Tarun Malhotra. This video definitely has a message and I have a strong feeling that it’s going to resonate with a lot of people.”

BAHRAIN’S MUSIC SCENE Along the way, Xenai has met a multitude of talented musicians who continue to create original content and refuse to give up on their dreams despite the struggles. “That’s why it’s unfortunate to see that in terms of a music scene or industry, there isn’t one. There isn’t a foundation for local artists to thrive as

musicians here, even more so for expats,” he says, highlighting the need for an infrastructure for the music scene.

“We need talent managers, agents, lawyers and laws to be passed by the government. We need support from our government to build an entertainment industry that spans across all genres including individual artists – not just the festivals and cultural music,” he says.

He stresses the need for creating an entity, with government support, that would ensure the fair treatment of musicians. “We need a musicians union so that musicians who go into the studio of a production house can never be under paid or taken for granted because at the end of the day this is a profession and people who take it seriously need to be taken seriously,” he says.

“This even goes for music producers who compose songs for advertisement agencies and companies. Companies using local talent to push their business need to pay these artists for giving their time and talent and there needs to be an entity to hold them accountable.”

THE NEXT STEP Faced with adversity, he chose instead to grow as an artist and overall musician, perfecting his evolutionary talent. “Every instrument is the body part of the anatomy of music. That’s the way I see it. So, when I practice drums, I carry with me the knowledge of the other instruments and vice versa. Whatever I play only grows my knowledge of music, and keeping that intention in mind is what helps me perfect what I do,” he says.

“In other words, the music I make, drives me to play other instruments. At the end of the day, I’m a songwriter and my goals are to create and make an impact through what I release into the world,” he adds.

THE PLANETS ALIGN In an exciting development, Xenai is currently collaborating with a Bahraini artist, Layan Raed, popularly known as @magnanimousbylayan on the social-networking platform Instagram.

“As I mentioned earlier, my new releases will be planets as each track is a different world that I explore and share. We are creating these planets together.”

UNITED IN FRIENDSHIP The 50th Anniversary of Diplomatic Relations between Bahrain and India is to be celebrated through a spectacular book, film and web portal.

A

special media project titled ‘Golden Jubilee 50 Years United in Friendship Project (1971-2021) Bahrain & India’ is under preparation, in print and digital format, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of bilateral relations between Bahrain and India and the landmark achievements in the history between them.

In addition, a film documentary is under production featuring VIPs, ministers, celebrities, businessmen and corporate leaders from Bahrain and India wishing to associate themselves directly with this important historical milestone.

A Facebook Group https://www.facebook. com/groups/indiancommunityinbahrain/ will also serve as a vestibule of anecdotes, pictures, personal stories and history spanning the decades since Bahrain and India first established diplomatic relations.

This will feed the web portal, www. indiainbahrain.com, from where the digital edition of the publication and the documentary film can be downloaded.

This is a once in a half century opportunity for all Bahrain/India associated companies, organisations, institutions, social and cultural groups and relevant associations to let Bahrain, India and the world know all about their stories from a personal, professional and cultural perspective in light of tremendous progress achieved over the past five decades.

Interviews have already been secured with a number of prominent India, Bahrain and internationally-based ministers, diplomats, entrepreneurs, actors, models, fashion designers and celebrities who have agreed to participate in print, online or through the documentary film.

Sustaining Diplomatic Relations German Ambassador to the Kingdom of Bahrain, HE Kai Boeckmann, sheds a light on the diplomatic relations between the two countries in this conversation with Farah Baig.

You have been stationed in the Kingdom of Bahrain since 2018. Since the start of your assignment, what have been the greatest developments at the German embassy?

We have seen many significant developments but I would like to highlight three in particular: we are now very active on social media, have reached large audiences with our cultural events, and, significantly, the depth and intensity of our bilateral cooperation in the political field has increased remarkably.

To elaborate, since October 2018, the Embassy of Germany has started to communicate with all friends of Germany in Bahrain and with the German community via 14 October 2021

social media. Our Instagram Account @ germanyinbahrain is well established now has well over 5,000 Followers. Since March 2021, people can also follow me on Twitter using the handle @germanybahrain. With the outstanding support of the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities (BACA), we have also brought many renowned artists to Bahrain. The German embassy has also helped to ensure a high-level presence of German representatives in the last three editions of the Manama Dialogue. It is not by chance that HE the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani, has already been to Berlin twice since taking office.

I would like to mention another important

development in the political field, because we profoundly believe in the added value of the European Union’s foreign policy; As local presidency of the EU from the beginning of 2020 until June 30, 2021 and thanks to VTC technology we have extended the EU coordination to all EU member states accredited to Bahrain, including over 20 ambassadors based in Kuwait, Abu Dhabi and Riyadh. We were very pleased that high-ranking guests – foremost among them HE the Minister of Foreign Affairs in the Kingdom of Bahrain - could join these extended EU-coordination meetings. This has contributed to a better understanding of Bahrain by our European partners. www.bahrainthismonth.com

germanyinbahrain Approximately how many Germans and German businesses are currently in Bahrain?

The German community in the Kingdom of Bahrain has been very stable over the years.

So, we still count an approximate 500 German citizens who permanently reside in the Kingdom. Also, the thirty or so German companies actively engaged in Bahrain have shown remarkable resilience over the last couple of years.

What are the key sectors that German citizens in Bahrain are currently engaged in?

German citizens are engaged in many activities in the private sector such as industrial production, finance, water management, construction, transport, tourism and education. Their activities are as diverse as the Bahraini economy. Most work for German companies, some also in Bahraini companies and some in the neighbouring Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

How are they adapting to the challenges presented by the current pandemic?

I have heard many positive comments from members of the German community about how much they appreciate the availability of vaccines for all residents in Bahrain. Also, the transparency regarding the numbers and the strategies adopted to combat COVID--19 offered by Bahrain’s National Medical Task Force for Combating the Coronavirus (COVID19) is highly appreciated - this has greatly facilitated our work at the German Embassy.

What are the current trade figures between the two countries? Are there any developments in the pipeline to further strengthen trade relations?

Among the EU member states, Germany is the most important trade partner of Bahrain.

German and Bahraini companies are very much aware of the benefits of trade. The trade figures continue to be on the rise, despite COVID-19 - bilateral trade in 2020 amounted to EUR624.6 million compared to EUR476.1 million in 2019. Bahrain’s imports from Germany in 2020 rose by a third to the value of EUR499.7 million while Bahraini exports to Germany reached EUR124.9 million.

Since the start of the pandemic in February last year, people all around the world have faced several challenges. How did the German embassy prepare to meet these challenges?

The last one and a half years were, for us, a time of swift adaptation to the development www.bahrainthismonth.com

of the COVID-19 pandemic. We have changed how we work – home office and video conferences have enabled us to function fully even in the most difficult weeks of the pandemic. Our visa section did not close for a single day, to enable those who need to travel for urgent reasons to do so.

Video conferences have now become a regular part of our internal and external communications. We have learned a lot, most of all, how to stay connected with colleagues and partners in times of difficulties. As a result, the headquarters of the German Foreign Office and the embassies are now working closer together than ever before. Also, the regional networking has increased – not only between the EU member states accredited to Bahrain. A regular exchange with my fellow German ambassadors in the GCC countries has become routine.

What was the embassy’s policy towards continued commercial partnerships, investments and mutual growth during this period?

As German ambassador, of course I support all partnerships between German and Bahraini business representatives. Since the beginning of the pandemic I have been meeting regularly with the German business community in Bahrain once a week to listen to their assessments and concerns. We often meet with companies who are about to enter Bahrain and are there to support all partnerships and bridge builders between Germany and Bahrain. I have participated in many webinars dealing with business matters and whenever possible, we have met in person, for example facilitating meetings between the German business community in Bahrain and Bahrain Economic Development Board (EDB).

Even in this period several companies have expanded their operation to include Bahrain and it has been my pleasure to receive them.

The role of cultural exchanges between Bahrain and Germany have always been high on the agenda. How are these being developed for the future?

We will strive to continue and expand our excellent partnership with Bahrain’s Authority of Culture and Antiquities led by Shaikha Mai bint Mohammed Al-Khalifa in order to bring German artists to Bahrain. We are preparing for the second edition of the Gulf German Film Festival in cooperation with Goethe Institute Gulf. In addition, we are seeing an expansion of the German Language Program – the language courses offered by the German Embassy in

Manama for children, young people and adults with the support of the Goethe Institute Are there any high-level delegations or VIP visits planned for the future? If so, how will these be managed?

I am quite confident, that in the upcoming IISS Manama Dialogue from November 19 to November 21, 2021 Germany will again be represented, like in the last three years, by high level panel speakers and delegates. The Manama Dialogue is such an important forum.

Last year’s event has impressively shown how such a high-level conference can be successfully managed even in times of COVID-19.

What are your main goals and objectives for your remaining time in Bahrain?

First of all, I strive to deepen and broaden the cooperation between the Kingdom of Bahrain and the Federal Republic of Germany in all political fields. Germany has just celebrated federal elections and is preparing for a new government to take over the helm from Chancellor Angela Merkel. Germany will remain strongly committed to the partnership with the Kingdom of Bahrain. Next year, on May 17, 2022 we will celebrate and look back on 50 years of diplomatic relations between Germany and Bahrain. Secondly, I hope to see some of the economic projects which are still in the pipeline reach concrete results on the ground. In the cultural field, I am very optimistic that soon it will be possible to bring German artists and musicians to Bahrain, so that the Bahraini public can once again enjoy a direct encounter with German culture without having to travel to Germany. Finally, we are working for further growth of our followers on social media.

How do you plan on achieving this?

As in the past, the secret of success is to closely work with trusted partners. The Bahraini government, under the directives of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and led by His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister has been an outstanding partner and given tremendous support to all our activities.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs under the leadership of HE the Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani has been helpful and supportive on a daily basis. The Bahraini business community has also been open-minded and welcoming, just like all our friends and partners in Bahrain’s rich social and cultural communities.

GOING THE DISTANCE Makram Raad, Country Manager of DHL Express tells us about the worldleading express and logistics company’s presence in the Kingdom of Bahrain.

s an international courier, package delivery and express mail service, DHL needs no introduction to the vast majority of people. The company has had a presence in the Kingdom of Bahrain since 1976 and has steadily grown through the leadership and strength of its employees. Having first arrived in Bahrain in 2019, DHL Express’ new Country Manager, Makram Raad, is prepared to take the company even further in his leadership role.

The Lebanese national has lived in the GCC and been with DHL for nearly 10 years, working in multiple roles and capacities. “As the new Country Manager, my main priority is to further promote the Kingdom’s trade ecosystem and continue to add value to its competitive offering, attracting investments while contributing to the community’s economic wellbeing,” says Mr. Raad, who holds an MBA with a focus on Finance from Notre Dame University.

Competition in the logistics and courier service is fierce so a competitive edge is a must. “We have a strategic advantage as a result of our deep understanding of market dynamics which gives us an edge in the industry,” explains Mr. Raad. “However, I would have to say that our biggest strength is our people. “Our processes, capabilities and people were put under tremendous strain but I am proud to say that we have come out stronger than before,” he adds.

Some of the many changes to the company’s processes were the introduction of contactless signatures, and the adoption of additional safety measures to protect customers and front liners.

“While we are still not out of the pandemic, we continue working hard to support the community during this time,” he says.

Aside from the need for medical supplies, consumer demands surges as the WorkFrom-Home culture took hold during the pandemic. “It was up to DHL Express and other industry providers to fulfil these logistical needs. We capitalised on our expertise and local know-how to optimise our courier routes and achieve the promised transit times,” he explains.

As explained by Mr. Raad. the economy is forecasted to expand by 3.1% based on latest experts reports with many sectors bouncing back after a rough year, particularly in energy and retail.

Exploring Germany

Our globe-trotting journalist, Kristian Harrison, sheds light on some of his favourite places to visit in Germany!

Boasting a vast variety of incredible scenery, Germany encompasses a little of everything. From the beautiful valleys of the Rhine and Mosel rivers to the majestic mountains of the Bavarian Alps, the awesome shorelines of Lake Constance, and the magnificent cities such as Berlin and Munich, there’s something nice to see at every turn.

Thanks to the superb network of highways (autobahns) and railways that crisscross this central European country, Germany’s cities and towns, big and small, are easy to access. Here’s a selection of a few places you might want to visit:

Koblenz & the Rhine Valley If you do partake in a river cruise down the Rhine, you will at some point find yourself docked in the beautiful city of Koblenz. However you arrive, though, be sure to make your first stop the magnificent Deutsches Eck, or German Corner. It’s here you’ll witness one of the most incredible natural phenomena in the country – the meeting of the Rhine and Mosel rivers, overlooked by the huge Memorial to German Unity, an impressive equestrian statue of King Wilhelm I. Watching these two mighty rivers meet is a sight to behold. If you time it right, you can even enjoy a summer evening classical music concert at the same time. Great views of the German Corner and the two rivers can also be enjoyed by taking the Koblenz cable car up to spectacular Ehrenbreitstein Fortress.

Berlin No matter where you want to go in Germany, it’s worth spending at least a few days in Berlin. The country’s capital is undoubtedly one of the most dynamic and vibrant cities in Europe, as popular for its superb dining experiences as it is for its shopping and entertainment.

Berlin is also considered one of Europe’s top cultural destinations, home to numerous excellent art galleries and museums just waiting to be explored. Some of the best of which are located on Museum Island, a mustsee destination that alone can take days to explore.

germanyinbahrain Munich The capital of the state of Bavaria, the home of Oktoberfest and one of Germany’s largest cities, Munich owes much of its popularity as a tourism destination to its location on the outer edge of the beautiful Bavarian Alps.

Although not one of Germany’s oldest cities – its roots can be traced back to a settlement of monks pre-dating its official founding in 1158 – Munich has played a major role in shaping the country’s cultural and political make-up.

The city’s rapid growth saw it develop into an important centre for religion, arts and trade. These days, no visitor can fail to notice the city’s many surviving churches, including the iconic cathedral and Munich’s most recognised building, the Frauenkirche.

Another reason Munich has attained a place as one of Germany’s most popular tourist destinations is its historic city centre. It’s a delight to explore on foot, especially if visiting the city’s large open square, the Marienplatz.

Here, you can explore delightful old architecture dating all the way back to medieval times, including the Old and New Town Halls.

Neuschwanstein The quaint old town of Füssen, situated between the Ammergau and Allgäu Alps and a popular alpine resort and winter sports centre, is a good base from which to explore nearby Neuschwanstein Castle, one of Europe’s most famous (and picturesque) royal castles.

King Ludwig II of Bavaria built this many-towered and battlementcovered fantasy fortress – the inspiration for Walt Disney’s famous theme park castles – from 1869-86. A variety of tour options are offered, including guided tours of the sumptuous interior taking in the Throne Room, the Singers’ Hall... and some of the country’s most spectacular views.

The Black Forest The beautiful Black Forest with its dark, densely-wooded hills is one of the most visited upland regions in all of Europe. Situated in the south-western corner of Germany and extending 160km from Pforzheim in the north to Waldshut on the High Rhine in the south, it’s a hiker’s heaven.

On the west side, it descends steeply to the Rhine, crossed by lush valleys, while on the east, it slopes more gently down to the upper Neckar and Danube valleys. Popular spots include Germany’s oldest ski area at Todtnau, the magnificent spa facilities of Baden-Baden, and the attractive resort of Bad Liebenzell.

Hohenzollern Castle Hohenzollern Castle is one of the most impressive and beautiful castles in Germany. Perched on the top of a hill, you can see its silhouette against the skyline as you approach from any direction.

One of the most intriguing things about the castle is the catacombs, or underground caves, where ammunition and gunpowder was stored. You can walk through this maze of caves and marvel at the effort it took to create them. The castle is also where the legend of the ‘white lady’ started – a ghost of a woman in white has been seen several times by various people. www.bahrainthismonth.com

Hans Lamprecht is a distinguished diplomat, with a globe-trotting career which culminated in a posting in Bahrain. Recently retired, he remains in the Kingdom after falling in love with its culture and people.

I

“I come from Herrenberg, a small town south of Stuttgart,” says Hans, who is keen to remember exactly where he came from.

“My hometown is known for its tradition, closeness to nature and familyfriendliness. The city has a medieval architecture and is an insider tip for visitors from all over the world. It’s honestly a hidden gem in Germany.

“For me, Herrenberg is an anchor so I don’t forget my roots and Herrenberg doesn’t forget me either.”

For now, though, as he has been for a long time, Hans is far from home. In 1982, he found employment in the German Foreign Office and worked in the diplomatic service in Bonn, Marseille, New York, Saint Petersburg, Moscow, Atlanta, Nouakchott, Berlin, Pristina, Beijing, Miami, and finally the German Embassy in Manama. Arriving in 2014, Bahrain was Hans’ last post in his long and renowned career, before finally retiring in 2020.

He explained: “In Bahrain, I had the function of the head of the consular department (consul) and officer for press and culture. These activities brought me together with many people and authorities in Bahrain and connected me to the country in other ways. In my six years in the Kingdom there were various consular, cultural press events which gave me a diverse experience of both the German and Bahraini community here.”

Despite retiring, Hans still maintains strong relations with the German community in Bahrain, which he always found supportive to his work especially in the economic sector.

“Many actions could not be carried out without the backing of the German community and our Bahraini friends,” he said. “In 26 October 2021

particular, I would like to mention the Authority for Culture and the Isa Cultural Centre for their support.”

Hans continues to live in Bahrain after retirement and also married into a Bahraini family. He and his wife have two young daughters and continue to feel comfortable and happy in the Kingdom.

“What I have also learned is that Bahraini families are very different from German families,” he said. “You don’t just marry the daughter, you marry the whole family! You belong to it and you are not so distant. It wasn’t easy, but Bahraini friends helped me to overcome the hurdle and made us feel

comfortable. I would like to name one of them, Jaleel AlAnsari, who built the bridge. I hope that many bridges can still be built between Bahrain and Germany, the foundation is there.”

Ultimately, Hans only has positive things to say about Bahrain. “The people are open and friendly and have the right amount of pride in their country. In my opinion, Bahrain is a model country of intercultural and interreligious coexistence and since my arrival this has steadily developed further. Also, the area of environmental protection and reforestation throughout the Kingdom is one of the reasons why I decided to settle here after my retirement,” he concludes.

A TRUE INNOVATOR Life has undoubtedly changed dramatically in the past couple of years, with focus shifting to digital transactions and e-commerce. One German entrepreneur has settled in the Kingdom to empower small businesses to transition and grow in this new economic environment.

ebastian Wussler has a storied history in digital platforms, none more impressive than his latest creation Hoodly, which was conceived in Bahrain last year during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The genesis of Hoodly came during the period of strictest COVID-19 regulations last year,” Sebastian explained. “Certain restaurants didn’t have a delivery platform but then found themselves needing to have one so that they could sustain their business with indoor dining obviously not an option.

“These outlets weren’t on apps such as Talabat here in Bahrain, or equivalent services in Europe and the wider Gulf region. It takes several weeks to be approved on those apps, and not only that, but it’s hard for smaller restaurants to be seen over the traditional giants.

Hence, Sebastian had an idea to create a software that would allow every restaurant to have their own takeaway store online within five minutes. This was developed over a couple of weeks and managed to get a great response in a very short time.

“We quickly began to realise that not only restaurants were using it but fashion stores too, and so Hoodly grew to allow you to create any type of commerce outlet, whether that’s takeaway and delivery, click and collect for goods and anything else within reason,” he says.

Sebastian decided to settle in Bahrain after first visiting for food events in late 2019. After one particular event at Mahonia Restaurant and Lounge featuring one of the world’s most renowned chefs from Hong Kong and after revisiting the Kingdom, he noticed a gap in the market, with the Middle East yet to fully embrace the idea of e-commerce.

Hoodly is not Sebastian’s first success. He has a restaurant background with a family business of 50 years spanning three generations.

He explained: “I am proud of my background, but admittedly at 21 I decided that I didn’t want that to be ‘it’. I wanted to discover the world and went to South Africa to learn English and improve myself. I met my now ex-wife and mother of my beautiful daughter,

but unfortunately my mother fell ill with cancer in 2007 and as the eldest son I came back to support the restaurant.

“Despite this, I had to find a way to make more money to visit friends and family so I started a platform similar to Airbnb for South Africa, called NewCapeTown. Since there was increased tourism in the area and a huge focus on the 2010 World Cup, we ended up with 1,250 guest houses and boutique hotels on the app for people to stay in. Not only that, but we developed it further to include a city guide with tourist information such as restaurant recommendations.”

After the World Cup, Twitter exploded worldwide and Sebastian decided to create a similar platform called ChefsTalk, where guests could interact with chefs directly. A decade later, 180,000 chefs use the platform and it boasts two million followers on Instagram.

Now, his focus is on growing Hoodly but the ideas don’t stop there.

AN INDIAN FEAST AT JASHAN! Farah Baig savours the flavours of authentic Indian food at Bahrain’s next best Indian restaurant - Jashan

ahrain has grown to be a gastronome’s dream – there’s no doubt about that. With that reputation, however, comes the evergrowing responsibility of restaurants to raise the bar when it comes to creative menus, exemplary service and an exquisite ambiance.

This month, our quest for a delectable lunch saw us sauntering into Wyndham Garden Manama, located in Juffair, making our way to the hotel’s Indian restaurant – Jashan.

Jashan. The name itself is enticing as the Hindi word translates to ‘celebration’, so we were expecting nothing short of a feast. From the moment you step out of the elevator on the seventh floor, you are greeted by the unmistakable aroma of authentic Indian food.

The restaurant’s décor is opulent with intricate designs, tapestry, embroidery and lanterns which contribute to the restaurant’s warm ambiance. After being seated at a corner table, we enjoyed the vibrant music and good conversation while our food was being freshly prepared by celebrity chef, Jainul Khan, and his culinary team.

Jashan is quickly growing in popularity for its terrific tandoori offerings and it’s all for good reason. To start our feast, we were served vegetarian and non-vegetarian Jashan platters www.bahrainthismonth.com

– each with four kinds of scrumptious tandoori kebabs. The non-vegetarian tandoori platter was adorned by perfectly grilled hariyali prawns, malai chicken kebab, amritsari machi tikka and lamb seekh kebabs. Each item was perfectly cooked to retain its moisture and flavour but what we enjoyed most were the large, minty prawns and malai tikka which were bursting with flavour. It’s no surprise that Jashan, like most Indian restaurants, has a bounty of delectable dishes for vegetarians.

What sets it apart, though, is the fact that each is very different from the next and in no way similar to what you find at your average Indian restaurant. The vegetarian tandoori platter made that clear with its spicy paneer tikka, dahi ke kebab, delicious potato cutlets and vegetarian seekh kebabs.

As most people know, the Dum style of cooking originated in India, so we were quite excited to try Jashan’s Murgh Dum Nawabi Biryani. The aromatic biriyani, which is served with a side of raita, is laden with generous servings of chicken cooked in a myriad of spices that are cooked in a traditional sealed pot. Sealing the pot ensures that the flavours of the chef’s lakhnavi spices penetrate into the basmati rice so you don’t lose any of those rich flavours. We

loved that this biryani was divinely flavourful, light and fragrant but did not weigh us down.

To top off our mains we tucked into a variety of vegetarian and non-vegetarian curries. The curry that stood out to us the most was the delightlful Mutton Rogan Josh ­– a traditional Kashmiri dish with tender cubes of extremely tender lamb in a thick and fragrant gravy. The meat is perfectly cooked and tender enough to effortlessly break apart with a fork. This coupled with the restaurant’s fresh tandoori roti is a divine treat at lunch. We also thoroughly enjoyed the Dal Jashan which is a mix of black lentils, simmered overnight and finished with cream and butter. The rich Paneer Spring Onion Masala and chicken Bemisal were sure to have us coming back for more, too.

To end our meal on a sweet note, we tucked into some warm Gulab Jamoons and Kulfi Falooda. We enjoyed the flavour of the Kulfi Falooda’s creamy saffron and pistachio icecream which complemented the herb syrup perfectly.

Needless to say, Jashan’s decadent food, warm hospitality and beautiful interiors are sure to make every diner’s Indian feast a memorable one.

FROM INVENTION TO INDUSTRY AND INNOVATION

Germany is no stranger to the motoring industry.

Kristian Harrison explores their achievements over time.

G

ermany and motoring… two things which fit perfectly like a hand in a glove.

Despite what the Americans might have you believe, Germany is the cradle of the modern day car industry. The first German car made in 1885 – more about that later – set the tone for automobile revolution the world over. Over the next century and beyond, German entrepreneurs gradually came up with impeccable engineering, style, luxury and speed to define car transportation for years to come.

Now, the country has a reputation as the most innovative in the motoring domain, with the world’s third-highest car production and fourthhighest total motor vehicle production, with six million models made per year by a labour force of more than 850,000 people.

The first ever motor car in the world, aptly named the Motorwagen, was invented by German engineer Karl Benz in 1885. Appearing like a horse carriage, he developed and patented his invention four-stroke internal combustion engine in 1886.

Soon Benz developed a better model running on gasoline and went for its commercial production in 1887. The vehicle was launched on the market a year later and was an instant hit. In 1988, Benz’s wife travelled 65 miles in the car to see her ailing father. It drew public attention and soon Benz’s car began to be sold in Germany and France.

came into existence. While Benz Sons dominated the market, Opel produced its first German car in 1906 and became the first German manufacturer maker to set up a mass production assembly line. In 1935, Opel was the first company to cross 100,000 vehicle productions in a year.

In 1937, a new state-owned automobile company created affordable yet speedy motors connected by autobahns across Germany. Its name? ‘Volkswagen’ – or ‘The People’s Car’ – and specifically the iconic Beetle. These days, the wider Volkswagen Group is now the world’s largest automaker accounting for 40 percent of all vehicles sold Whenever the phrase ‘luxury cars’ is uttered, it’s almost impossible to not think of the titans of Germanic engineering. The likes of BMW, Mercedes, Audi and Porsche immediately spring to mind.

Audi, established in 1910, became the first German car company to exclusively focus on vehicles with powerful engines. Its earliest models Sport-Phaeton and Type B and subsequent six-cylinder models had more powerful engines than their contemporaries.

BMW (which stands for ‘Bavarian Motor Works’ – remember that for your next trivia quiz!) originally began as a company making engines for aircrafts. Indeed, the company’s

famous blue-and-white logo actually represents a spinning propeller – another great fact!

It was only after World War I that it pivoted into automobile production, reverting back to constructing engines during the Second World War, before again reinventing itself and entering the car market in 1959, focusing on its ultra-luxury sedans and the sports car segment.

Furthermore, Germany also has a storied history with racing. Audi has achieved great success in endurance racing as manufacturers at the Le Mans 24 Hours and as far as individual talent goes, if not perhaps quite as much success as constructors as their pedigree would suggest, Michael Schumacher, Sebastian Vettel and Nico Rosberg’s 12 combined Formula One world championships.

Above all, German cars are renowned for their efficiency and resilience. A stereotype it may be, but with cutting-edge technology, exceptional reliability and a national mentality that demands quality, it’s a deserved one.

HUMAN RESOURCES CHAMPIONS Bentley Motors has announced the appointment of Dr. Karen Lange as Member of the Board for Human Resources reporting to Chairman and CEO, Adrian Hallmark. She replaces Dr. Astrid Fontaine who leaves Bentley after more than three years to join Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles as Member of the Board for Human Resources.

After teaching at the University of Hanover and a stay at the Institute of Industrial Relations at the University of Berkley (California, USA), Dr. Lange joined the Volkswagen Group in 2002. After holding various management positions in the Volkswagen Group Human Resources department, including Head of Global Assignments from 2013, she was appointed Head of Human Resources at the Volkswagen joint venture Northvolt Zwei GmbH & Co. KG in Salzgitter in 2020.

Dr. Astrid Fontaine became Bentley’s first Member of the Board for People, Digitalisation and IT in January

2018, joining from Porsche North America where she was Vice President of Human Resources, Culture and Innovation while also teaching digital enterprise at the Emory University Atlanta. Since joining Bentley, Astrid has led the development of a new digital strategy that has seen the piloting of a variety of digital services.www

RETURNING IN STYLE Lamborghini Super Trofeo Middle East will make a welcome return to the international motorsport calendar in January 2022, following a two-year hiatus caused by the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. The championship, which is organised by the motorsport division of Automobili Lamborghini, Squadra Corse and reserved for Huracán Super Trofeo Evo cars, will take place over 10 days, six races at two of the most iconic circuits in the region.

The first edition of the Middle East championship took place in 2017, with the same weekend format on the same tracks, followed by further successful seasons in 2018 and 2019. Overall, 69 drivers have taken part in the Super Trofeo Middle East to date, with drivers such as Frederik Schandorff, who won the 2019 Pro class title, also being crowned Lamborghini Super Trofeo World Finals winner later in the same year, racing in the International GT Open and included in the Lamborghini GT3 Junior Drivers programme.

The opening round will be disputed on the penultimate weekend in January at the Yas Marina circuit in Abu Dhabi, the host venue of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. A week later, the championship heads off to the nearby Dubai Autodrome to conclude the campaign.

A GLOBAL MILESTONE! Further strengthening the 55-year legacy of its best-selling vehicle, Toyota has announced that the iconic Corolla model has surpassed sales of 50 million units worldwide. The incredible milestone underlines the enduring appeal of the muchloved model, which is globally renowned for providing low operating costs and reliable, trouble-free motoring stemming from quality engineering, together with outstanding comfort levels.

Ebrahim Khalil Kanoo first started selling the Corolla in Bahrain in 1967, one year after its global debut in 1966, and it has continued to evolve in line with the needs of the times and remains a highly popular choice among drivers. New advanced features and functions have been introduced to suit the expectations of customers, all while inheriting the original model’s core DNA-reliability and usability-from the very first generation.

The ‘Bahrain ProAm 1000’ will become the only global GT endurance race open exclusively to ProAm and Am driver combinations, with no Pro combinations permitted. This will allow gentleman drivers to battle for overall victory. The race, taking in 185 laps of the Formula 1-hosting circuit, will be open to GT3, GT4 and Cup classes.

The event is being launched in collaboration with Driving Force Events, promoter of the Gulf 12 Hours, which successfully hosted a hugely popular 2021 event in January at BIC, won by Bahrain’s 2 Seas Motorsport. Full details on entry criteria will be announced in due course, with the event expecting to attract a high-quality field from around the world.

DOMINATING THE PODIUM The Nissan GT-R NISMO GT500 achieved a clean sweep of the podium at round three of the SUPER GT held at Suzuka Circuit recently making it a day worth celebrating for all Nissan fans.

The #23 GT-R, driven by Tsugio Matsuda, went on to take its first win of the season, and the GT-Rs achieved a clean podium sweep with the #3 in second, and the #24 GT-R, which had temporarily dropped to 6th but fought its way back, following in 3rd. The #12 GT-R also finished in 6th to see all GT-Rs finish in the top 6.

This victory was Matsuda’s 23rd in the SUPER GT, setting a new record for the most wins in the series. At the same time, the GT-R achieved its third consecutive win at Suzuka, following two wins last year, another new record in the SUPER GT. In the GT300 class, five Nissan GT-R NISMO GT3s competed and, although the #56 Realize Nissan Automobile Technical College GT-R of Kiyoto Fujinami and Joao Paulo de Oliveira temporarily dropped down the order, they recovered to finish in 8th place.

All other GT-Rs also completed the race.

W

ith the slow waning of the pandemic globally, countries are easing restrictions – not as a social necessity but largely driven by economic needs. Switzerland, a tourism driven economy, was among the first to rapidly ease restrictions for incoming travelers. Another country that has done something similar has been Germany. With a view to minimising the pandemic impact, the largely technology and manufacturing driven economy has been innovating and expanding its global collaborations.

Germany has been rapidly increasing its focus and relations with the GCC at large. This is evident by the fact that after the European Union market, the GCC market is already now the fifth most important export market worldwide for German companies. This association is driven by the tourism sector (including medical tourism), banking, vocational education, and small and mediumsized companies.

In 2017, the energy partnership between the UAE and Germany was established between the BMWi (Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy, Germany) and the Ministry of Energy and Industry of the UAE (MoEI). The purpose of the energy partnership has been the exchange of 40 October 2021

knowledge and expertise between both countries across the energy sector.

At a more retail level, Germany is very popular with GCC visitors, and the country recorded 1.6 million overnight stays from the Gulf region in 2019 with the goal of reaching 3.6 million overnight stays by 2030. Tourism is a powerful enabler of economic activity and as of April 2021, Gulf Air and Bahrain Tourisms and Exhibitions Authority (BTEA) have entered into an agreement to promote Bahrain as a tourist or extended transit destination in German markets. This will also likely bolster the already rising economic ties between the two countries.

The German economy already benefits from Bahraini investors and tourists (medical and leisure) alike. For a few years now, Bahraini investment firm Investcorp has been increasing its German portfolio. As of July 2019, the company had about €325 million of Assets under Management in Germany. Mumtalakat, Bahrain’s Sovereign Wealth Fund currently owns 30 per cent in FAI Aviation Group – one of the largest private aviation operators in Europe.

In 2019, German Group Armacell launched its 11,000 square meter facility in Bahrain with an

investment of USD11 million. As per latest estimates, there are around 30 German companies that have offices in Bahrain or are engaged in projects in the country.

Today, GESALO (German Saudi-Arabian Liaison Office for Economic Affairs) provides a wellestablished framework for entrepreneurs from Germany, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia to collaborate. Traversing from a large industrial and manufacturing lead collaboration, to engaging at the level of start-up eco systems, is testimony of the depth of the economic relations between the regions.

Western Europe has had a special appeal for residents of the GCC region and ‘Made in Germany’ has had a credibility attached to it.

As Bahrain and the GCC move towards economic diversification, developing systems of collaboration, knowledge sharing becomes critical. When the touchpoints between the two countries or regions increase, mutually beneficial systems are inevitable and likely to spur growth across the economies involved.

WHAT IS IT?

Tales of Arise is an action role-playing game developed and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment. The seventeenth main entry in the Tales series, the game follows two people from the opposing worlds of Dahna and Rena. Rena’s superior technological and magical advancement cause it to hold power over Dahna, taking its resources and treating its people as slaves. The protagonists are a young man, Alphen, native to Dahna, and a young woman, Shionne, from Rena, who end up travelling together.

GAMEPLAY

Like previous games in the series, the game retains the basic Tales battle system, dubbed the Linear Motion Battle System, which this time has a big focus on evading and countering.

Unlike many of the previous titles in the series, the game will not feature multiplayer, with development team deciding to focus on various interactions between characters in combat, including the addition of the “Boost Strike” feature, allowing multiple party members to perform destructive attacks together under certain conditions.

GRAPHICS

Tales of Arise is an incredibly pretty game, both in its main character models and its often amazing environmental design.

Some of the locations are stunning in their artistry, presenting the kind of situation where you start panning the camera around in an attempt to breathe it all in. Simply put, this game’s begging for a photo mode.

Certified Lover Boy After a long run-up that included videos with impressive cameos, fancy hairstyles and knee surgery, when Drake’s Certified Lover Boy was released, it came in at an epic length of 21 songs and was packed with a glittering array of guest stars from across the rap spectrum including Lil Durk, Lil Baby, Rick Ross, Lil Wayne, Kid Cudi, Future, Young Thug, Travis Scott and Jay-Z. As with most of his releases since he discovered trap, a majority of the songs plod along slowly while Drake weaves tales of his own greatness; his prowess as a lover, father, and athlete; and how people are doing him dirty, all in a voice that wavers between laid-back vibes and played-out boredom. Only a few stand out from the grind.

Iron Maiden Senjutsu Verdict:

Another instant classic from the metal icons.

What’s the story?

The reigning monarchs of the new/old wave of British heavy metal movement, it would be perfectly acceptable for Iron Maiden to rest on their considerable laurels and just pick-slide and fist-pump their way through a seemingly endless cycle of continent-spanning stadium tours. Instead, the band has continued to add new material to their arsenal, fleshing out the nooks and crannies of past glories with expansive, prog-minded efforts. This, their 17th album and second double-LP, was recorded during a break in their global ‘Legacy of the Beast’ tour in 2019.

Worth a listen?

Clocking in at just over 80 minutes, the epic Senjutsu is another distended late-career triumph, albeit one that requires multiple spins to really unlock its secrets. Commencing with one of the band’s best openers in years, the potent “Senjutsu,” treats the prosaic cruelties of war with equal parts melancholy and might.

Apart from the nimble “Stratego,” which bears the instantly familiar galloping gait of classic Maiden, the ten-song set leans hard into the band’s progressive tendencies. Despite an overarching preference for midtempo pieces, Senjutsu never lumbers. The serpentine arrangements and sonic detours into everything from Spaghetti Western-inspired groove metal (“The Writing on the Wall”) and maximalist, major key art-rock (“The Time Machine”) to lilting folk-metal (“Death of the Celts”) show a flair for innovation that artists who’ve been in the game so long rarely aspire to.

Donda The first noticeable thing about Kanye West’s tenth studio album, Donda, is its mass. A CHAMPION OF CHANGE Founder and President of Think Pink Bahrain, Julie Sprakel, tells Farah Baig about the NGO’s latest campaign – #DinarForDistance.

F

ollowing the tumultuous effects of the pandemic for the majority of last year, the world seems to be adapting and regaining its footing with life slowly, yet surely, approaching a pre-COVID pace. Despite the worldwide standstill, the need for healthcare and awareness in certain aspects remained the same throughout. This was especially in the case of life-threatening conditions such as breast cancer – the main focus of Think Pink: Bahrain Breast Cancer Society.

The non-profit organisation was founded by Dr. Julie Sprakel in 2004 and has since raised invaluable funds that would better support the Kingdom in regards to Breast Cancer awareness, education and research. “It’s been nearly 18 years since I founded Think Pink and its most notable achievements to-date all depend on perspective. I arrived in Bahrain in 2002 and soon founded the organisation as I believed there was a need for breast cancer awareness in the Kingdom,” explains Dr. Sprakel.

“Since then, and moving forward, the main focus of campaigns will always be to raise awareness,” she says. #DinarForDistance Explained The Think Pink 2021 campaign, #DinarForDistance, aims to not only raise funds for the cause and awareness, but also encourage people to move. The idea for the campaign came to Dr. Sprakel while she was placed in hotel quarantine in Australia for two weeks. “I decided to walk back and forth

in my room, once a day, for the duration of my quarantine and managed to cover 42 kilometers in that time. We didn’t want to do a walkathon this year in order to be responsible and avoid crows, so I realised that this is a great way to get people to move,” she says.

Those wishing to participate can register through the Think Pink website, and get their family, friends or workplace to sponsor them. “The pledge is very much their own with #DinarForDistance as the focus of the campaign is movement. People can swim, cycle, walk, jog and getting moving in any way they see fit. Staying healthy through fitness is said to contribute to reductions in noncommunicable diseases such as breast cancer,

and also contributes to mental health, so encouraging people to move works well with our cause,” she says, adding that the campaign is already receiving a positive response with people registering even in September.

At the end of the campaign, and following the collection of donations, Think Pink will calculate the total distance that the community covered for the cause. “I was in Australia to say my final goodbye to my father, Frank, so this campaign is very much dedicated to him too,” she adds.

The application has also been peer reviewed and has links to the new Decision Aids and National Breast Cancer Guidelines.

“The application was developed in close collaboration with Bahrain Polytechnic University and functions in both: English and Arabic,” she says.

Achievements and Accolades As of 2020, the organisation has raised over USD3.5 million that has gone towards research, the equipping of highly specialised healthcare facilities in the Kingdom and awareness campaigns. “On a personal level, I believe that the greatest achievement has been our ability to create conversation around the subject that was otherwise not talked about,” says Dr. Sprakel, who has on numerous occasions given lectures on the subject. “It has been rewarding to have people approach me and explain that they detected a lump early and were able to receive treatment, as they were made aware through a lecture, or that they were able to have conversations with their mother or daughter and help them through it,” she says.

In 2017, Think Pink held its Longest Ribbon Challenge with the support of Bahrain International Circuit - Chief Executive Shaikh Salman bin Isa Al Khalifa and his team. “The challenge received a phenomenal response, but one of the most memorable experiences that came out of it for me, specifically, was when I was invited to an individual’s home so their daughter may tie a ribbon for the cause,” she says. “This 10-year-old girl was able to explain to me exactly why she was tying the ribbon and said she wanted to raise awareness for the cause. It made me realise how much of an impact our cause has had - that a girl so young would understand.”

The organisation has grown over time, granted that over the years some expatriate members may have left when leaving the island. “There is a consistent interest among the community to volunteer for the cause.

We receive applications through our website and sometimes have volunteers apply to be a member of the board,” she says, adding that the team also has three men contributing to their efforts.

“And of course, we have original founding members and people such as Tahera Al Alawi who volunteered to be part of the original Founding Group and hereafter has remained its number one champion, advocate and Charity's Vice Chair.”

The organisation, notably, raised BD499,900 through events, functions, private and corporate donations for the purchase of a digital MRI machine at Salmaniya Medical Complex. “We are still very thankful for the communities trust in us as an NGO, and moreover thrilled that this machine is utilised daily to better support our community and those at higher risk,” she says.

Challenges and Strengths The organisation, too, faced challenges during the onslaught of the pandemic last year.

Your child is becoming more independent At the age of two, children are now capable of walking alone, communicating their needs, figuring out their personality, and being in control of their body; they can close their mouth to signal that they do not want to eat whatever you are offering, they can cry, scream, or throw a tantrum.

Toddlers are very intuitive They notice patterns and act on them. If, as a baby, your toddler ate sweet food such as bananas and apples, they will get used to it. So, when you introduce non-sweet vegetables or fruits, they simply won't recognise the taste because they haven't developed a palate for it yet. Also, parents tend to feed their kids what they like and steer clear of foods they don't like.
