elcome to the June issue – our special ‘Stay At Home’ edition! Active cases on the island skyrocketed last month, as did the number of daily deaths, which resulted in the need for the temporary closure of venues.

Since it’s everyone’s responsibility to stay in and stay safe, for the well-being of the community, we decided to put together an issue that should make the experience easier to bear. In our dining section, we’ve compiled delectable dining options from hospitality experts such as The Ritz-Carlton, Movenpick and Frasier Suites, which you can enjoy in the comfort of your own home! In our interview section this month, we had a chat with an extremely talented Bahraini musician, Fawaz Al Shaikh, who recently launched his debut album ‘Conference of Birds’. The divinely soothing album, which was mastered at Abbey Road Studios in London, is sure to bring on waves of nostalgia and inspire your deepest of thoughts. Our Downtime section is your source of endless entertainment this month with several excellent films and series, games, music and more. There’s plenty to read in our Motoring section this month as Dick Potter delves into the motoring industries’ move towards a greener, more electric future. We also find out more about the Ferrari certification and get the latest news from the BIC, London Concours as well as renowned motoring brands. Pria Masson Tanwar, as usual, gave us some eye-opening insight into the hot new business concept of ‘Cloud Kitchens’. On the other hand, Bill Grieve delved into a topic that we can all relate to Nuisance Noise in apartment buildings! Thankfully, he provided us with some vital advice and remedial solutions in case we find ourselves in a similar situation. Woman This Month is jam-packed with fun content that’s cool for the summer. While most people dread the heat, our editorial team was overly enthusiastic about “bringing on the bright colours” and worked on a fun fashion focus for you. They’ve also put together a bunch of beauty essentials, skincare, and dazzling accessories to go with your wardrobe too! On the interview front, we spoke to the ever-so-ambitious media personality and influencer, Nasreen Sururi, who told us about how her career got started and her recent new business venture. Being a woman of many talents, there’s plenty of inspiration here! You’ll also enjoy cooking our delicious recipes and delving into the world of interior design with our take on minimalism. The pandemic has proved to be more resilient than anything we’d dreaded, but the good news is – so are we. We’re positive that our beautiful island will make it through as more people take the vaccination, and continue taking precautions through social distancing and mask wearing in public. STAY responsible and STAY safe, of course! Remember, Bahrain This Month on Instagram, Facebook, YouTube and Twitter will always be ‘Your Guide to a Great Way of Life’.

TUNES THAT FLY HIGH! We chat with the ever-so-talented solo artist and song writer, Fawaz Al Shaikh, about the Conference of Birds.

Music is a very welcome escape from reality… especially in this day and age when the world is faced with one of its biggest challenges yet. It’s undeniable - Bahrain has long been home to a multitude of extremely talented musicians who put their heart and soul into their music. One such musician is Fawaz Al Shaikh, whose solo artist name is Conference of Birds. He’s recently released a divinely soothing album of the same name that is sure to bring on waves of nostalgia and inspire your deepest of thoughts.

interview Bahrain’s music scene needs no introduction to you, but could you tell our readers about yourself? Music has always been my passion, ever since I was seven years old. In 2014, I co-founded a cover band named BG Harmony. We have been actively performing across the island at music events and festivals. In 2019, I started working on my own, writing my own music, composing and producing them which led to me releasing my first debut album titled ‘Conference of Birds’. What’s the story behind the name ‘Conference of Birds’? I wanted to give myself an artist name rather than using my own name but failed to come up with one which I believed fit. One day, while listening to the song ‘A Head Full of Dreams’ by Coldplay, I heard the reference to a “conference of birds” in the lyrics. So, I humbly borrowed that name for myself, which I chose for many reasons. I’m inspired by the word “togetherness”; it’s a powerful word, and I think its meaning is reflected in the name. Tell us about your current EP. How long did you work on it and what would you consider the most memorable part of the project? It took me about a year to write those songs and almost six months to record, produce, mix and master the EP. There were so many memorable moments during the project, but my favourite would be the choir recording. It was experimental and sensational to have six vocalists recording four out of the five songs that are in the EP. You are the first Bahraini to have your album mastered at Abbey Road Studios - the studio where the Beatles made their albums in London, UK. How does this accomplishment make you feel? What was the experience like and how do you think it made a difference to the finished tracks? With technology and digitalisation, artists around the globe can now master their projects almost anywhere. I specifically chose Abbey Road Studios because I am a huge fan of the Beatles. It’s because of their songs that I became an artist. Just knowing that my music has been processed in that same physical building is enough for me to have that inspiration and satisfaction.

What’s the story behind ‘Two Lost Boys on a Run’? This song is about friendship. I rarely listen to stories about best friends growing apart. So, I wrote a song about it and hope people would be able to relate to it. Where did you find the inspiration for your music? Which of the tracks on your current EP do you believe you connect with the most? My inspiration came from various artists, both: global and local. The Beatles and Queen would top the list of global artists who have inspired me in every way possible. Not only did I listen to their music, but actually studied their songs and analysed most of them. In terms of local artists, I only learned from the best; Ala Ghawas, who in my opinion is the best song writer in our country; the members of Likwid Band - Ahmed Alqasim, Khalid Alshamlan, Ahmed Abdulaziz and AbdulrahmanMalallah; Mohammed Haddad who I consider my prime teacher in music; Na Der and many other artists who support me and many other local artists. I have heard many opinions from listeners regarding their favourite track in the EP. For me personally, I’m highly connected to the song ‘Fly’.

to work on my EP. It was an odd advantage that I took. Tell us about your musician friends that you collaborated with on the project. I have contacted many talented friends and artists locally that I believed would add value to this album. I was blessed enough that none of my approaches were rejected. This includes Ala Ghawas, Abdulla Jamal, Jesse Q, Ismail Gharib, Debbi Francisco, Szabi Nigo and more. What’s next for you? Next stop: waiting for the situation to settle down in Bahrain. When it’s safe enough to go public, I will definitely go live with this album. Once I’m done with that, I will move on to writing my next album hopefully. Where can people find your album? The album is physically available for sale at Virgin Megastore in Bahrain City Center, Room 2 Rock in Saar and La Guitara Music Centre in Hoora. The album is digitally available on Apple Music, Spotify, Amazon Music, Anghami, Youtube Music and more. To follow Fawaz, check out a Conference of Birds on Instagram using the handle @ conferenceofbirds.

You are a renowned musician in Bahrain, considering that you are a part of the band BG Harmony. What are your thoughts on Bahrain’s music scene and how has it adapted during the pandemic? Bahrain’s music scene has been booming positively in the past decade. Many opportunities opened up through music festivals, food festivals, shopping festivals, public and corporate events and many more. It’s a given that the pandemic has affected all industries and the economy as a whole, but for me personally, staying at home during COVID19 was the main factor to give me time

How would you describe your music? I would say my music in this EP is an expression. I admire many artists of all kinds who express themselves through their artwork. In my music, I tried to spread out some positive energy, hope and love in those songs in my own way. However, I am sure listeners would have an even better perspective in describing those songs on the album as they can be interpreted in many ways.

THE ELECTRIC REVOLUTION!

Dick Potter delves into a hot topic in the motoring industry – greener vehicles.

I

should be surprised, but I guess the only surprise is that it took so long for the announcement to be made. Supercar maker Lamborghini is the latest automotive brand to outline how it will transition to greener vehicles in the future. It vows to electrify their current range of models by the end of 2024, as the frightening 2030 ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars looms. Returning CEO, Stephan Winkelmann-he was away at Bugatti for a stint- announced that the iconic marque will invest over a billion Euros in the next four years that will see all cars in its line-up switch to petrol-electric hybrid powertrains. Whilst this was inevitable-the world’s most flamboyant supercar company was bound to embrace electric sooner or laterit doesn’t really have a choice. Lamborghini’s rivals are pushing ahead, Ferrari for example, recently confirmed its first EV will be with us by 2025. However, unlike rival Ferrari, Lamborghini will adopt a more cautious approach. It has yet to rubber stamp when it will sell its first fully-electric vehicle. While conventional brands such as Ford and Jaguar Land Rover have set out their phased switch to battery power, it’s a more difficult proposal for manufacturers of highperformance premium cars sold on their visceral sound, speed and distribution of weight for handling. For makers such as Lamborghini, abandoning the internal www.bahrainthismonth.com

combustion is both a technical and emotional challenge. The brand with the rampaging bull for a logo is famed for its roaring 12-cylinder powerplants. I am reliably informed that the map for Lamborghini’s change will unfurl thus. The current Aventador, Huracán and Urus line up will keep going for another couple of years. Then over the course of two years – 2023 to 2024 – Lamborghini will electrify its whole line-up, which means plug-in hybrid replacements for the Aventador and Huracán and a heavily-updated, plug-in hybrid Urus.

engined, noisy, high-drama machines. Whilst it must maintain its DNA, to be recognisable as a Lamborghini, there are those CO2 emissions to factor in. Lamborghini claim to have a target of 50 per cent CO2 reduction across the fleet by 2024. With their 60th anniversary in two years’ time, it’s fairly safe to assume Lamborghini won’t disappoint with their EV offerings as the motoring green movement inexorably draws nearer! Safe driving all. dickpotter@redhousemarketing.com

Question is, why wait so long? Well, Winkelmann wants to wait until there’s more development of battery technology and the charging infrastructure. Very wise Mr. Winkelmann. On a technical level, lithium-ion batteries cannot operate for long at top speed - a real issue for a car firm that sells outrageously fast motors. Furthermore, research suggests that one in four drivers plan to buy an electric car in the coming years. For those not planning to buy one, expense is cited as the primary reason- most likely they won’t be buying a Lamborghini then. Concerns around the battery lifespan and charging stations are the next reasons drivers are reluctant to go down electric avenue-(laugh!). Lamborghini have therefore vowed to give top priority to the range aspect in the battery electric era. It’s a time of total revolution for a company whose calling card has always been bigJune 2021 19

MAXIMUM SECURITY AND PEACE OF MIND What you need to know about the Ferrari Approved Certification

A

t the Ferrari headquarters in Maranello, Italy and across the world at the authorised dealerships, a heritage of excellence is maintained through the Ferrari Approved Certification. This application of the highest possible standards allows the Prancing Horse team to deliver the best possible customer experience for Ferrari owners. The Approved pre-owned certification programme reflects the marque’s unrivalled standards through an intricate inspection process that guarantees the ultimate satisfaction for the programme’s customers. Pristine Ferrari vehicles that were once completely out of reach to many have become that little bit more accessible. But before these pre-owned vehicles are made available to the public, they have to undergo a rigorous process comprising a series of wide-ranging checks and numerous guarantees that have been approved by the parent company. To ensure that any pre-owned Ferrari is operating at standards comparable to a brand-new vehicle, the local Ferrari dealership starts by implementing a detailed technical inspection of each and every car. This is carried out by a team of highly skilled Ferrari technicians who have undergone extensive training at Maranello in Northern Italy, the home of Ferrari. One of their very first tasks is to verify the origin and maintenance history of these vehicles to ensure they have been properly taken care of and have no major accidents in their service history. These technicians painstakingly prepare both the exterior and interior of each car to ensure that every aspect of the vehicle is in top condition, a fastidious process which enables them to provide a www.bahrainthismonth.com

guarantee for the cars of up to 24 months. If you are wondering how thorough these inspections are, all in all a total of 190 individual checks are carried out before a used Ferrari may be bestowed with an Approved “license”. This detailed examination includes a mechanical operation test as well as a test on the operation of the electrical system. Liquid levels are also carefully examined, as are the state of the suspension, brakes, cooling system and steering system. These are but a handful of the primary checks implemented on all vehicles. On top of these, secondary checks are carried out on air conditioning, the dashboard and all safety systems. Operation of lights, wheels and tires (including tread depth and pressure) are yet more examples of the car’s functional capabilities that are carefully inspected. All of this takes place in compliance with Ferrari standards of safety, performance and reliability.

that it has an unlimited mileage warranty, except for parts subject to routine maintenance such as brake pads & disks, tyres and other normal wear and tear. With such a comprehensive certification programme being applied, the Ferrari Approved pre-owned initiative guarantees the quality of all vehicles being sold as well as the support required to ensure a positive experience for all owners.

Once these checks have been completed, seasoned testers put the car through its paces to ensure it is functioning at 100 percent. Thanks to these detailed inspections, all those who purchase a pre-owned vehicle from an authorised Ferrari dealership will receive a written analysis of all of the tests performed. The transparent nature of the history of Ferrari Approved models ensures every item of information is verified, and anyone purchasing a Ferrari Approved car will enjoy the benefits of a Ferrari warranty as well, which covers the parts and labour for major repairs. ON-ROAD TESTING INITIATED

After initial testing on the proving grounds of the Porsche Development Centre in Weissach, the all-electric Macan is ready for the road, with the well camouflaged next-generation prototypes of the compact SUV now heading outside Porsche premises for the first time. “Testing in a real-life environment is now getting underway – one of the most important milestones in the development process,” says Michael Steiner, Member of the Executive Board, Research and Development, at Porsche AG. By the time the all-electric Macan is launched onto the market in 2023, it will have covered some three million test kilometres worldwide in varying conditions. The prototypes are able to incorporate the experience gained from countless previous test kilometres driven in a virtual space. Digital development and testing preserve resources and therefore enhance sustainability. Instead of real vehicles, the engineers use digital prototypes – computational models that replicate the properties, systems and power units of a vehicle to a high degree of accuracy. There are 20 digital prototypes for the purpose of simulation in a number of development categories, such as aerodynamics, energy management, operation and acoustics.

New Supercar Day

The London Concours presented by Montres Breguet is now extended over three days, cementing its reputation as one of the UK’s top motoring events. The third and final day of this year’s event is ‘Supercar Day’, in association with Drivers Union. The exclusive supercar owners club will bring 60 of its members’ finest cars to grace the lawns of the Honourable Artillery Club, alongside 100 of the world’s rarest and most collectible cars. Among the 60 eclectic supercars will be a beautiful, limited edition Aston Martin V12 Vantage S Spitfire edition, which was a unique tribute by Aston Martin Cambridge to the Supermarine Spitfire, celebrating its 80th anniversary. Also making an appearance on the lawns will be one of many stunning Ferraris. The Ferrari 575 was launched in 2002, designed by styling house Pininfarina, the car was essentially a tweaked version of the beautiful 550 Maranello. Adding to the collection of supercars on display are a few quirkier vehicles which include a BMW Z8 which was most famous for its role in in the James Bond film The World Is Not Enough, the ultimate 80s pinup the Porsche 911 930 Turbo, and the definitive hellraiser from Blackpool, the outrageous TVR Sagaris, complete with side-exit exhaust pipes. The London Concours takes place from 8-10 June 2021.

A LITTLE WAY TO PRESERVE HISTORY

The Little Car Company, makers of the limited-edition Bugatti Baby II, are thrilled to commence deliveries to customers around the world. Built in partnership with Bugatti, the Bugatti Baby II is a contemporary tribute to Ettore Bugatti’s original masterpiece, the Bugatti Baby, built in 1926. The vehicle was developed to celebrate Bugatti’s 110th anniversary, and is not only significant in preserving the history of the Bugatti marque, but also inspiring a new generation of young Bugatti enthusiasts. The very first of 500 bespoke Baby II models have started to reach owners across the globe, sparking excitement with Bugatti collectors both old and new. One of the first Bugatti Baby II vehicles has arrived with a long-time Bugatti owner in Dubai. The carbon fiber ‘Vitesse’ version of the Baby II will be deployed for private transfers to VIP sections of the airport. REPORTING A SURGE

As PEUGEOT continues to buck the automotive industry with its strong comeback into the GCC, the French automaker announced positive sales results in its first quarter. Buoyed by a successful performance to the fourth quarter in 2020, recent figures released by PEUGEOT indicate an increase of 210 percent and 420 percent for its passenger and light commercial vehicle (LCV) segments respectively. During Q1 of 2021, PEUGEOT expanded its operations in key markets such as Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Bahrain, growing its customer base and resulting in a significant increase in sales. Its passenger vehicle sales more than tripled, with products such as the 3008 SUV and 5008 SUV driving growth by 173 percent and 254 percent respectively and the 508 increasing by 270 percent. With the onset of COVID-19, Peugeot struck key deals with Noon, Amazon and DHL to support the rise of E-commerce. In addition, the brand prioritised the production of LCVs like the Partner, which accounted for a significant proportion of new vehicles in the GCC, to support deliveries and distribution networks. This resulted in the brand’s LCV segment performing strongly with sales up by 420 percent.

CLOUD KITCHENS More on-ground than you think!

Pria Masson Tanwar explores the potential of and processes behind Cloud Kitchens.

R

ecently, some frequently used terms have the word “cloud” attached to them like cloud computing, cloud servers, etc. One such term that caught my eye recently was the concept of cloud kitchens. Simply put, these are delivery-only food service operators. This core concept got me very confused since to my mind, that’s really the same as a restaurant using a delivery platform like Zomato, etc. Turns out, this is just the tip of the iceberg and the potential of this business is significant. So, what are cloud kitchens? Think of them as a large warehouse space where a custombuilt assembly line and cleverly planned logistics and supply chains ensure quick turnarounds and efficient cost numbers. That’s exactly what cloud kitchens are – a very large food court where space is rented out for a fee and an online platform is

provided to interact with customers. One popular format is to offer “Kitchen-as-a service (KaaS) or satellite kitchens” that provide a space to existing brands. The other format is “virtual restaurants” wherein the chefs, cuisines and menu items are curated and offered under a new umbrella. How does this process begin? As always, with an investor, with deep enough financial resources, who owns or takes on a long-term lease for a significant space. This space is then custom-built or developed for either specific cuisines, specific brands or a mix of the above. It’s then organised for efficiency similar to an assembly line for a factory so that volume is easier and quality uncompromised. In return for this entire set up, a tenants fee plus a commission on each delivery is often charged. As a business, it’s of significant interest.

Online food delivery in the MENA region, which includes regular restaurants using delivery platforms, is a USD three billion market, more than 65% of which is accounted for by the UAE and Saudi Arabia. As per a KPMG Food and Beverage report for 2019-2020, more than 80% of consumers surveyed used apps to order food. Another interesting statistic out of the same report is that 22% of the operators saw delivery contributing more than 25% of sales and is on an upward trajectory. By reducing overheads and making costs efficient, the barriers to entry for talent are reduced. Also, technology provides malleability and allows the menu options and cuisines themselves to be tweaked by demand. The data available with delivery apps allows cloud kitchens to offer food demanded by specific locations. The benefits of this system is the flexibility and opportunity that it provides for new talent to enter in a protected space. Operationally, there is no physical interaction with any client and the entire loop of communication is virtual. Since the entire focus is efficient delivery, the staff and overhead costs- which form a significant part of operational expenses for a restaurant – are minimised. For the investor, the rent received and commission along with the diversified cuisines offer a commercial hedge from low demand.

e c n a s i u N Noise!

Bill Grieve explores a relatable issue in residential apartment buildings. Bill Grieve

“It doesn’t matter if you are a pilot, a pastor, a plumber or a professor - if your neighbors complain about you making noise - you’re being a nuisance!” Nuisance noise in an apartment building can be one of the greatest negative impacts on modern lifestyle living regardless of the highest standards of a building. Inconsiderate neighbours generally know they are making a noise and simply don’t care - that’s why good building management is a crucial consideration when selecting an apartment. Ask the building management what the nuisance noise policies are and how they deal with noise makers - in writing. “You don’t have to be a genius to know that when you live in a residential apartment you have a moral duty to be considerate of your neighbours and the effect of your actions on them.” Most residential apartment building areas already have more than enough external noise from sewerage removal pump trucks, refuse removal, inconsiderate drivers “hooning” around, loud motorcycles or scooters, public transport and especially construction and maintenance.

That being said, the main internal residential building related noise sources are: • Constantly activated fire alarms. • Slamming of doors. • Loud and unruly behaviour in common areas or

It is often the case that people downsizing from villas to apartment buildings continue to generate the same amount of noise they did in their villa or house and show little consideration for adjacent neighbours - especially underneath them. Another significant frustration is caused by introducing “villagers” and people who are not accustomed to the refinements and protocols of residential apartment living and due to their ignorance perpetually set off fire alarms, bang doors, drop items on the tiled or hard floors and adopt a couldn’t care less attitude about noise sources like music, loud voices, scraping furniture across the floor and causing a raucous when watching sports on TV showing little or no consideration for those around them.

• Scraping furniture across tiled or hard surfaces. • Walking in hard heels on tiled or hard floors or

dropping items continuously. • Unruly or constantly crying or performing children. • Personal relationship inconsiderations - screaming, shouting. Pets and toys - Both being the responsibility of the tenant or resident. 28 June 2021

even if your favourite team is playing - use earphones, make use of party halls or building TV rooms, watch your loud sports, TV programmes or make your music in an environment that does not cause a disturbance to your neighbours - just because you have rented the apartment does not give you, your family, friends or visitors the right to be a nuisance or cause other tenants to complain about you making a racket or disturbing their peace.

www.bahrainthismonth.com

THE SOLUTION

Report It to Sort It!! General Resident Rules

• Use outside facilities for gatherings and get togethers where there may be noise.

• Behave as though your parents lived in the same building. • Your noise may be causing someone else’s discomfort - be

Question What is an acceptable level of noise in a residential apartment building?

Answer - The level where no one in an adjacent apartment or in your building has reason to complain about you - when someone complains about noise you are making you should apologise, turn it down and learn a lesson - embarrassingly and stop being a nuisance! It’s not rocket science to be considerate and actually a direct reflection on upbringing, culture, education, intelligence, common sense and simply put what your parents taught you - to be well behaved. Nuisance noise makers are nothing new and history depicts these inconsiderate scrotes, regardless of their standing or position in society, and describes them accordingly throughout - Charles Babbage the well-known anti-noise activist circa 1741 related:“Actually, I have for a long time been of the opinion that the quantity of noise anyone can comfortably endure is in inverse proportion to their mental powers, and can therefore be regarded as a rough measure of them. When I therefore hear dogs barking hour upon hour unrestrained in the courtyard of a house, I know what to think of the mental powers of the inhabitants. Whoever habitually slams doors rather than closing them by hand, or allows this happen in their house, is not merely ill-mannered, but a crude and obtuse person”.

considerate at all times.

• If you live in a residential apartment remember it’s NOT a villa or a village hut.

• Don’t be the rotten apple in the basket - behave - it’s not a kindergarten you’re living in.

Advice to Building Management -

• When a nuisance noise is reported - ACT! • Giving lip service or excuses is unnecessary and only grows mushrooms.

• Do your job - manage noise complaints effectively. Improperly handled or unaddressed nuisance noise quickly becomes a vicious cycle often leading to severe consequences.

The 3 rules of nuisance noise Report, Record, Repeat.

Always report nuisance noise and keep a good record of every occurrence and the actions involved and resultant events or occurrences. You can also report nuisance noise makers to the municipality or even the police however this should be a last resort. If you have a nuisance noise comment please visit the online version and share it through this QR code and share this article with anyone it may be relevant or appropriate to.

Building management is also often to blame Nuisance noise creation is not always the tenants’ fault - building management has a responsibility to address areas of nuisance noise creation that they create through faulty interior decorating design choices I.e. Heavy doors that slam easily with no braking or self-closing systems and especially common - the scraping sounds of floor contact furniture on hard floors, the drill like resonance of which could probably wake the dead when furniture is inconsiderately dragged, pulled, pushed or move especially late at night or early morning and which easily pierces through ceilings, floors and adjacent walls. There is also a duty of care to residents to act on nuisance noise complaints without delay. www.bahrainthismonth.com

WHAT IS IT?

Resident Evil Village is a survival horror game developed and published by Capcom. A major instalment in the Resident Evil series and a narrative sequel to 2017’s Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, the game follows Ethan Winters, who, after a fateful encounter with Chris Redfield, finds himself in a village filled with mutant creatures in an effort to find his kidnapped daughter. While Village maintains the series’ mainstay survival horror elements, the game adopts a more action-oriented gameplay style compared to its predecessor.

GAMEPLAY

Resident Evil Village uses a first-person perspective and is set in a snowy explorable Eastern European village. The inventory management mechanic features a briefcase and the ability to move and rotate items for better storage space. Players can buy supplies, weapons, items from a merchant, called the Duke and can also hunt animals in the village and have them cooked into dishes by him. Eating side dishes allows the player to gain certain advantages such as decreasing the damage taken while blocking.

GRAPHICS

The eponymous village consists of numerous visually distinctive domains that you must survive, from the opulent gold-trimmed interiors of Castle Dimitrescu to the grungy mechanical works of Heisenberg’s subterranean facility. There are noticeable shifts in mood between each setting, with one demanding a more stealth-driven approach while another leans more into psychological horror than combat. Delving into the darkest corners of Village’s world and uncovering the real reason these fairytale freaks have come into existence in the present day makes for a compelling mystery.

music

Paul Weller Fat Pop, Vol.1

Fat Pop, Vol. 1 is a dense, oversaturated collection of bold hooks, easy melodies, and multi-coloured sonics, a record that happily blurs distinctions between genre as it hops from mood to mood. Plenty of Weller touchstones are evident within the contours of its 12 songs, featuring familiar sounds that seem fresh due to unpredictable production juxtapositions, and a sharp decision to keep things tight and breezy. Half of the album’s tracks clock in at under three minutes, a move that allows for the mellow closing numbers “In Better Time” and “Still Glides the Stream” to play a bit like a reflective coda. Weller may often be adventurous, yet he rarely seems as loose and playful as he does here, and that sense of mischief is an unexpected and welcome gift.

The Black Keys Delta Kream Verdict: A fun batch of covers

What’s the story? Delta Kream is the tenth album by American rock duo the Black Keys and is a cover album of hill country blues songs. The album was recorded in about 10 hours over two afternoons at Dan Auerbach’s Easy Eye Sound studio in Nashville at the end of the Let’s Rock tour, with little planning and no advance rehearsals.

Worth a listen? This record finds the duo of singer/guitarist Dan Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney putting their distinctive, garage rock stamp onto songs by such Mississippi blues legends as Junior Kimbrough, R.L. Burnside, and Mississippi Fred McDowell. Reinterpreting the work of landmark Southern Black artists is a tricky proposition for most bands, let alone a group of white indie rockers like the Black Keys. Thankfully, while it’s somewhat looser and more low-key than the group’s sonically ambitious studio efforts, Delta Kream percolates with a respect for the source material. Laconic and acidly textured, Delta Kream is a perfect balance of the Black Keys’ lo-fi swagger and keen ear for the Mississippi blues traditions that inspired it.

Phoebe Bridgers Copycat Killer

Phoebe Bridgers’ sophomore album solidifies the songwriter’s style with some of her most well-constructed and emotionally moving songs. “Kyoto” is a dynamic pop tune made up of perky horn parts, an upbeat tempo, and a soaring chorus. Copycat Killer conveys a different kind of emotional heaviness than her debut, and serves as a fantastic counterpoint for the more indie-oriented sound. More than anything, these songs speak to both the versatility and singularity of Bridgers’ song writing, which manages to be gripping in whatever form it takes.

Sons of Kemet Black to the Future

Before listening to Black to the Future, Sons of Kemet’s fourth album, reading the track list first is recommended. Band leader Shabaka Hutchings sequenced it as a poetic statement to accurately and aesthetically foreshadow the record’s narrative, thereby framing the context for its music. Sons of Kemet address the Black experience from colonial slavery to Black Lives Matter’s international ascendancy amid the struggle for self-determination while erasing artificial boundaries between jazz, dub, highlife, Afrobeat, calypso, rap, funk, and soul, without sterile posturing. LIFE IN VIBRANT COLOUR

GANT

This spring, you can live a little, and take some inspiration from fashion houses’ look books, when you mix and match your colours. Go bright! It is spring after all. We love going in for primary and secondary colours, so think shades of orange, red, purple or blue. Colour has always been ‘in’, so there’s no question of it being a part of your OOTD whether you’re thinking of a casual chic look for daytime, a corporate look or evening a glitzy evening look in a more subdued hue. While colour blocking is hardly a new concept, this summer GANT is giving it a signature update. So, take advantage of the changing seasons to simultaneously pile on the colours, without the layers! This seasonal collection paints the town in a bold palette - the first drop of SS21 celebrates colourful city life, bold statement dressing and playful fashion expressions. With Genny, it’s all about familiar patterns, textured fabric and a vibe that’s prim and proper. We loved their fun take on colour with the sky blue pant set and purple coat dress. If you’re looking for another playful take on colour this summer, you can draw inspiration from Berluti which has a range of colourful shirts, belts, bags and more!

s a young influencer and renowned media personality, Nasreen Sururi believes it is her responsibility to spread positivity among all her followers and fans. Having started her media career in 2008 as a TV presenter, Ms. Sururi has adapted to the industry while following her passion.

grab it with its risks or leave it. I’ve taken every chance I had whether it has to do with social media, business or myself,” she says. She believes her family was supportive of her efforts throughout. “I’d also like to thank MP Ahmed Al Saloom for his efforts and support for entrepreneurs and new projects,” she says.

“I went on to be an actress in 2014 and am currently a TV presenter with Kuwait TV specialising in the exciting world of motorsport,” said Ms. Sururi, adding that she has been in love with motorsport since she was a teenager.

“I’m grateful to every person who has been there to support me and make me a stronger person through all my up and downs,” she adds.

“It was karting that ignited my interest in motorsports. I love everything about the motoring scene – the smell of burning tyres, fuel, the spectators… it’s all so enthralling! From karting my interests grew to include autocross and drag races,” she explained.

For Ms. Sururi’s next project, she will be the face of a jewellery shop in the Kingdom and will also be launching her first gold line. “I will also be launching a fashion line among other projects… but let’s keep them a surprise,” she concluded.

One of her most recent acting projects was a live children’s theatre show which was the first live online streaming show in the Kingdom of Bahrain. “It was produced by my company with the artist, Mohamed Qamber, and proved to be a very positive experience for everyone involved,” she said, adding that the show was viewed over 3100 times over two days. Steadily growing in popularity over the years, Ms. Sururi has amassed a following of over 105,000 on social media. “During the pandemic, I’ve felt that it is my responsibility to encourage my followers, as much as I can, to stay at home and remain safe. I also do my best to create interesting content to keep my followers in high spirits while highlighting subjects that are beneficial to them,” she says. Overcoming the challenges presented by the pandemic, Ms. Sururi has taken the opportunity to adapt and delve into the world of business. “I tried to find ways to change my life for the better. One of the positive things that came out of the pandemic is that it’s been the longest period of time that I have been in my beloved country – Bahrain,” she said. “While here, I’ve realised that there are several opportunities here in the business field and with social media too,” she said, adding that it was at this time that she took on her recent venture in the food industry. “Tito’s Café has always been in the Diplomatic Area and taking on this venture, getting into a new field and market was quite a big challenge for me,” she said, adding that she has worked tirelessly on the restaurant’s menu to ensure the best of flavours and presentation. “However, for myself, I don’t see it as just a venture or a restaurant; this step changed many things in my life starting with the people surrounding me,” she added. Given that the new venture took root during COVID-19, not everyone was in favour of the decision. “Despite people believing it was not the right time, I saw it as the best time as sometimes chances come once and you either www.womanthismonth.com

SANTAL ROYAL, plays off the contrasts between a luminous bouquet of jasmine and rose, deep leather notes and an Oud accord. In all, it makes for majestic shadow play, all furled within enchanting sandalwood notes. OUDES SENTIEL, on the other hand, radiates its deep and complex fragrance from within. Smooth notes of rose meet mysterious leather notes and incense in a soft, yet powerful fragrance. WHAT IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN DISCIPLINE?

Ouiam El Hassani tells us seven important things when it comes to parenting. Parenting is a very complex task; if we're not careful, we will become too focused on one aspect and let the others fall by the wayside. Sometimes we get very caught up with the “What do I do when?" or “How do I get my kid to?" and lose sight of the bigger picture. The truth is… there are many things that are more important in shaping our children than the methods and techniques we use to modify their behavior.

Here are seven things that are more important than any method you choose: RELATIONSHIP

The relationship that we have with our children is the single biggest influence on them. Our relationship sets an example for how relationships should be throughout the rest of their lives. If we have a healthy relationship based on respect, empathy, and compassion, we have set a standard. They will grow to expect that this is what a relationship looks like and will likely not settle for less. If, however, our relationship is based on control, coercion, and manipulation, well, you see where I'm going with this. In addition to that, our influence comes from a good relationship. Children are more likely to listen to and cooperate with an adult who they are connected to. In other words, if we build trust and open communication when they are small, they will come to us when they are not so small. Our attachment helps wire healthy brains, and our responses set the tone for how they respond to us (they are little mirrors).

YOUR CUP

How full is it? You have to take care of you so you can take care of them. If your cup is full, you are more patient, more empathetic, and have more energy. Not only that, but a child who sees his parents respect themselves learns to have selfrespect. Put yourself back on your list.

YOUR LENS

When you look at your child, who do you see? Do you see the positives or the negatives? The way you think about them influences the way you treat them. Your thoughts also influence the way you feel emotionally and physically throughout the day. "He is in the terrible twos" will cause you to look for terrible things, to focus on them, and therefore try to correct them… constantly. Try to turn negative thoughts like this into positive thoughts, like, "He is inquisitive and fun!". Try to start seeing misbehaviour as a clue that calls for help rather than something that needs to be squashed immediately. Correction is not needed nearly as often as you might think.

MEDIA. TELEVISION. VIDEO GAMES. SOCIAL MEDIA. They are always sending messages to your kids, I am not saying don’t allow them, just be aware of what your kids are getting from what they're watching.

Monitor how you talk about them when they are present, watch your tone, your words, and how you verbalise the way you see your children.

YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH YOUR SIGNIFICANT OTHER Your kids are watching and learning. The way you and your partner treat each other again sets a standard. Happy parents make happy kids.

BASIC NEEDS

Adequate nutrition, sleep, and exercise are not only essential for the well-being of your child but also influence behaviour. They might not be able to recognise or verbalise their needs, but it will still mess with their behaviour and how cooperative they are during the day.

THE ATMOSPHERE OF YOUR HOME

All of the things mentioned above come together to create the atmosphere in your home. If you have loving and connected relationships, you likely have a warm atmosphere in your home. If there is discord between you and your spouse, or you and your child, or your child and your other child, then the overall atmosphere will suffer. Have you ever gone to someone's home and just felt a negative atmosphere?

THE ART OF PARING DOWN

If the current times have taught us anything, it is that less is more. Allowing you to apply this thought to your personal spaces is the idea of Minimalism. This home décor concept is a nod to neat, organised, open spaces. The overall colour palette is neutral, making use of different textures for an interesting appeal, while colours and prints are used judiciously and only as accents. Don’t confuse Minimalism for boring. See it as an exercise in restraint, curating your interiors with minimal basics that have maximum impact. Clean lines, fuss-free furniture, modular storage, light fabrics and furnishings, sleek accessories and fixtures that reflect a bright, open-plan interior is what you want to go for.

YOU WILL NEVER SMELL THE WORLD THE WAY I DO. What exactly is a scent profile? We find out how to find our signature scent.

E

ven as our relationships with makeup and hair care have shifted over the past year, fragrance has remained a reliable way to transcend our homes, conjure closeness to faraway relatives, and find elevation in a string of mundane days. As we emerge into more social situations, finding a signature scent may seem like a relevant search. But how do you go about it? Unpacking the notes and recognising how they work with your unique body chemistry is the first step, and one of the key classifications of a particular perfume is its scent profile. From detailing the layered notes to identifying its scent “family,” the profile is an easy way to understand a fragrance's composition while matching it up against the mood you want to be in when you apply. "In the fragrance world, olfactive families are a way to break down and classify how a perfume smells rather than what it contains,” says Julien Sprecher, Creative Director of Parfums de Marly. “Simply put, there are eight olfactive families that are divided into two groups: in the Warm group, there is fougere, oriental, and leather. In the Fresh group, you have citrus, floral, and aromatic. Interestingly, the chypre and woody families are a cross between warm and fresh. A profile can serve as the umbrella term for the main notes of a particular fragrance, it can also touch on the layers of a scent, such as the top, middle, and base notes, or how the fragrance is built." The profile itself does not change, as the notes it was created with will always be in the scent, but the way it smells on your skin often does. Some fragrances are linear, meaning they smell the same throughout the entirety of the wear. Most fragrances, though, do evolve on your skin over time. Therefore, finding the right signature fragrance ultimately comes down to your personality and the mood you're looking to access as everyone will smell it slightly differently and wear it on the skin differently too! How do you make the selection? Well you could start by having a look through Parfum de Marly's most sought after fragrances.
