As the heat of the summer sets in, naturally children will be more at home these days unless travelling elsewhere. In case you’re wondering how to keep them busy, we’re happy to announce that BACA’s Bahrain Summer Festival is back with in-person events again this year. Exciting events at the Cultural Hall are available for free and you can register your kids for some of the 500 creative workshops planned (full details in our Happenings section).

The workshop, presented by architect Zainab Abulmohsen Eid, focuses on freehand drawing methods using perspectives in interior and architectural areas with Bahraini history. Participants will learn plenty about conceptual drawing, which focuses on a number of essential factors in building design. They’ll also learn how to use a sketch to represent their own perceptions and send a message that is inspired by the Dilmun culture.

These are the words of King Gilgamesh, who came to the land of Bahrain to search for the flower of immortality in the age of the Dilmun civilisation thousands of years ago. Visualising the Epic of Gilgamesh; participants will learn the elementary skills of story creation, conceptual sketching, character drawing, and representing the tale’s elements and characters in a creative aspect. DEVELOPING TIES Since the signing of the Abraham Accords in 2020, Bahrain and Israel together with fellow GCC partner, the UAE, have enjoyed diplomatic relations. Bahrain This Month spoke to the Israeli Ambassador to Bahrain, HE Eitan Na’eh, to learn more about his mission to develop closer ties through art, culture and culinary activities.

W

hat is your considered assessment of the contribution of the Abraham Accords to the economic, political and cultural ties between Israel and Bahrain?

I think that both countries can benefit and we have seen investment from both sides in a number of industries, such as technology and pharmaceuticals. Networking that takes place, whether on a business or cultural level, only accelerates this. Israelis find themselves in the Gulf, sitting in restaurants full of Arab people. Barriers are breaking down, as they will continue to, the more they integrate at work and in friendship circles.

It’s more about the people-to-people element and that’s why culture is such a beautiful way to express and get connected.

Politically, we had two embassies in Israel and now we have five. So, when something breaks out, you have five Arab ambassadors talking to Israeli officials and vice-versa, to help ease things.

Have flashpoints and tensions between the Israelis and Palestinians (such as the condemnation following the killing and disruption at the funeral of Al Jazeera journalist, Shireen Abu Akleh) called the Abraham Accord between Israel and Bahrain into question - or placed it in jeopardy in any way?

It’s obvious that tensions won’t go away in one day, but there is an understanding that the issues are complex and we now have far more options for dialogue to make sure that any major incidents are diffused more easily.

interview Do Israeli tourists who visit Bahrain feel safe here?

They undoubtedly feel safe! I’d say there have been many who have flown in, with many Bahrain residents visiting Israel in return.

When you reflect upon your time as Ambassador, what have been the high and low points of your period of office in Bahrain?

On a very personal level, it’s quite an exciting experience to come here. As an Israeli, we all grew up there. We’ve been through thick and thin to be able to come here, have the best Independence Day reception and receive such a warm reception in Bahrain and the UAE. To be able to invite high-level diplomats to dinner is just amazing. There honestly have been no low points.

If you had your time over again and you weren’t a diplomat, what career path do you think would’ve chosen?

I don’t know how to answer this, as really it’s all I wanted to be since I was 16! I was inspired by the Israel-Egypt Peace Treaty signed in 1979 and I’ve been living the dream since. It really had an effect on the fact we need to write a different story and that was quite profound. I love history and I love politics.

Israeli food entrepreneur Doron Sason and actor Tsahi Halevi also joined the Ambassador in a recent visit to Bahrain to talk about the importance of focusing on areas of mutual interest devoid of controversy.

Then the call came for Fauda, which is an original Israeli series that came out in 2015 and deals with the ongoing conflict between Israel and the Palestinians through the perspective of an elite unit working undercover in Palestine to complete their missions. I play a character called Naor.

Going back to Fauda, I think it was the first time on television that you could see and reflect on what goes on in the conflict rather than trying to understand them through the news on television. The news is generally black and white but life is full of colours, and I think you see that through Fauda and the human aspect of the conflict. We were very happy to see that it became popular all over the world, especially in the Middle East, and it’s amazing.

It’s currently on its fourth season and it still shocks me how well it was received; it’s truly an honour to be involved.

Your wife, Lucy Aharish, is a successful ArabIsraeli journalist and I believe there was a lot of controversy on your union. Can you talk a bit about that?

Sure. We were initially in a relationship for five years and kept it under the radar. Journalists did know about it and tried to expose it but we explained that it’s extremely sensitive due to her Muslim background and me being Jewish.

We eventually decided to take it forward and thankfully, our parents approved as they are amazing and open-minded.

We did receive some abuse online and in the media, but it’s funny because no one will dare approach me in the street and say something like that. However, I think the majority of the response was very positive and we received a lot of love from both Arab and Jewish communities. We were even featured in articles abroad, in Europe and Australia for instance!

We were wondering … what’s so special about this? It’s just two people that fell in love and are getting married. But we realised that if there is positive news coming out of Israel, it can only be a good thing.

Netflix gave you an amazing platform but it is losing subscribers at a fast rate. Would you consider working for another streaming service?

I think it’s good for us actors that there are many platforms. There’s Amazon, Apple, Disney Plus and many more. More content and exposure can only be good for us actors, Israeli people and the consumers.

Tsahi Halevi, as an accomplished singer, actor and producer, can you give us a bit of background on your career and especially about your Netflix show, ‘Fauda’?

Speaking of innovation, Israel is pioneering the development of lab-grown meat, and the world’s first restaurant using it opened in Tel Aviv recently. Will you present it to your customers and is it kosher?

First of all, it is kosher because most of the ingredients are the same as we use today in vegan cooking. It’s not part of my consideration at the moment because it’s not really in the wider market and is largely under development; plus if I’m being honest, I don’t really enjoy the taste since it’s highly processed.

This is your first visit to Bahrain, how do you feel about the country and its cuisine?

It’s been great! I’ve been cooking all over the globe as it’s always my intention to connect and communicate with people. ‘Let’s talk through our food’ is my mantra, and I’ve done a lot of talking since I arrived in Bahrain and have been welcomed very warmly and tried some amazing food. The world cooks a fusion of foods and we all take a little bit of everything, so who knows; maybe some Bahraini elements will find their way into my recipes from now on!

For the Love of Animals!

One of the Kingdom’s most renowned animal welfare charities, the Bahrain Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (BSPCA) struggled during the COVID-19 pandemic as both the Animal Welfare Centre in Askar and the Thrift Shop had to close their doors. We found out the latest figures of animal adoption in Bahrain and how the society is recovering now that the Kingdom is opening up again.

here’s no denying that the Kingdom of Bahrain has an avid and ever-growing community of animal lovers that are consistently working towards positive change in terms of animal welfare on the island. To promote a sustainable and positive change, in this regard, there are several aspects that come together including animal rescue, adoption and awareness campaigns, and initiatives such as the Trap, Neuter and Release (TNR) programme which aims to minimise and control the population of strays.

The BSPCA, which was established in 1979, has been a consistent champion of animal welfare in the Kingdom for decades. However, the shelter was faced with its own share of challenges during the pandemic and now hopes to be on the upswing. Now that life has returned to some sort of normality, the BSPCA’s shelter is open to volunteers on weekends and the Thrift Shop is open to customers six days a week.

The Effects of the Pandemic Speaking about the Animal Welfare Centre, BSPCA Vice Chairman, Yasmin Alhilli, stated that operations are slowly starting to recover to pre-pandemic levels. “During COVID, animals were no longer accepted and the Trap, Neuter, Release (TNR) programme was halted. It was a difficult and very strange time for all, and we suffered due to a lack of income that primarily comes from the Thrift Shop,” says Ms. Alhilli.

The centre is struggling to recover financially, and has requested the public to donate what they can so they may continue to do the work that they do. “Adoptions over the last two years have greatly declined due to the pandemic.

year in 2019, down to 130 in 2020, and 110 in 2021,” she states.

Staying Consistent Despite this, the TNR programme continues apace. The BSPCA, on average, has sponsored 260 animals per year and appointments can be made through the Centre.

“During my tenure, I have introduced the BSPCA Weekly Special, where we highlight specific goods.

One week it could be books and another toys and games. These have received very positive feedback from our customers and the whole idea of the shop is that there are different treasures to be found every day with the stock ever-changing,” she continues.

The BSPCA also continues to work closely with numerous government bodies on countless cases pertaining to animal welfare. It is in regular and close contact with the Supreme Council for the Environment, and the Animal Wealth Directorate at the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Agriculture in an advisory capacity, and will continue to offer assistance in order to achieve more in future.

The society’s popular fundraisers will be making a comeback in the near future, according to Ms. Alhilli, and anyone interested is asked to follow the BSPCA’s social media channels (Facebook and Instagram) for the latest updates.

The shop team revamped the premises during the pandemic when it was forced to close for several weeks. Ironically, the closure was one of the busiest times in the shop’s history as many people in Bahrain were clearing their houses, downsizing, or moving to other countries, flooding the shop with donations.

The BSPCA Thrift Shop is also using its platform to highlight the importance of recycling, thus reducing waste in an effort to raise awareness of the environment.

Back at the Shop Marloes Wallin has been the proud BSPCA Thrift Shop Manager, which is located along Budaiya Highway, since June 2020. What started out as a small shop decades ago is now a two-storey villa stocked with donated, cleaned and checked goods. The shop’s revenue goes to the shelter to feed and to take care of the animals.

“We love the idea of recycling used items. By using items again, there is less waste. We have noticed more young people are visiting our shop looking for trendy vintage items, which is great.

We have such a wide selection of goods, from pencil sharpeners to designer handbags and everything in between, so there really is something for everyone,” she concludes.

“Customers love to shop with us and because of the generosity of people in Bahrain who donate their pre-loved clothes, books and so much more, we have been able to run the shop for so long.

US Ambassador to the Kingdom of Bahrain, His Excellency Steven C. Bondy, speaks to Bahrain This Month about his objectives as ambassador, the cooperation between the two countries with regards to regional maritime security, and more.

Your Excellency, can you give us a brief summary of your career to date?

First and foremost, I am honoured to be serving as the United States ambassador to the Kingdom of Bahrain. This is the culmination of a decades long career, and there is no place that I would rather be. There is nothing I would rather be doing than serving as the US ambassador in Bahrain. I have been with the 26 July 2022

diplomatic service of the United States for 31 years. In all of that time, my career has been focused on working in and on the issues of the broader Middle East. I had the great pleasure to serve in Bahrain earlier in 2004 to 2007 when I ran the Political and Economic Section here at the embassy. I’ve also served in other many other regional countries, including Iraq, Afghanistan, UAE, Turkey, Jordan, and Egypt.

You were confirmed as the US ambassador appointed to the Kingdom of Bahrain by the Senate in December 2021. What are your key observations during your time here?

Well, I’ve had the great pleasure to have visited every one of the Arab countries, and I can say with all truthfulness that Bahrain is the most welcoming place I’ve ever been.

outside world through trade and commerce, but I can say that Bahrainis are incredibly warm people. They have made my wife who is here with me, and I, feel like we are part of the community. During the month of Ramadan, we attended several events at Bahraini homes where we learned about cultures, traditions, and the religion and we just felt very much at home. I don’t want to compare Bahrain with other countries other than to say, this is where I am happy to be.

What do you consider to be your main objectives during your time here?

So, representing the Biden administration and having been confirmed by the United States Senate and also representing the people of the United States, I have many priorities. I would identify them first and foremost as protecting and strengthening the national security of the United States through our partnership with our very good friends and allies here in Bahrain. As you know, the Fifth Fleet and US Navy Central Command are based here and have been for decades. We really consider Bahrain to be a lynchpin in the projection of US power throughout the region, in order to preserve the security of the United States and that of Bahrain and our allies in the region.

I’ve spoken about threats to our mutual national security. Of course, I’ll say straight out that the greatest threat is from Iran. So, we are working with our friends here in Bahrain, along with other countries in order to deter Iran from threatening countries in the region including our friends and our allies. That leads to another point, which is Bahrain’s historic and courageous decision to normalise its relationship with the state of Israel through the Abraham Accords. As you well know, Bahrain and Israel are two of our closest friends, allies and partners in the region and, here at the embassy we are doing everything we can in order to strengthen that relationship across the broad spectrum of activities, be it commercial, technological, educational health science, or harder subjects of military and security.

I’m also here to promote US-Bahrain trade and commercial relations as they’re underpinning the US Free Trade Agreement, in addition to promoting other civil society activities. And, of course, here at the embassy, we devote a lot of time, effort and energy to promoting people-to-people ties - that is the solid foundation upon which our governmental relations are built. www.bahrainthismonth.com

What are your thoughts regarding the US’ role in the 34-nation Bahrain-based Naval force?

What have been some of the most significant achievements of the US Navy in terms of maritime protection, the war on drugs, etc.?

Truly Bahrain is the fundamental relationship the United States has in the region in order to patrol the maritime environment, ensure the safe transport of commercial shipping, and protect our friends and our allies our national security. Bahrain is the host of the Fifth Fleet, which is incredibly important, but in addition to hosting, Bahrain is an avid participant.

I would say a leader among our combined maritime forces - mostly involved in combatting piracy and smuggling of people, weapons and narcotics. For example, in the counter narcotics realm in 2021, the combined maritime forces actually interdicted USD500 million worth of illegal narcotics that were being smuggled on the high seas. That is a record by far, and it’s just an example of the type of things that we are doing together. In fact, Bahrain has commanded elements of the combined maritime forces. So, they’re not just hosting, and not just participating, but leading, June is observed as Pride month worldwide.

Last year, the US embassy hoisted the Pride flag at the embassy premises which proved to be very controversial. This year, the embassy has posted about Pride month on its official Instagram account garnering a similar reaction. What is the embassy’s stance on Pride month and the LGBTQ community in general?

Thank you for raising that question. I want to be very clear that we address LGBTQ rights as a part of our broader human rights strategy. Unfortunately, members of this community and their families to some degree have been marginalised and discriminated against throughout history, including in the United States. And so, this administration’s policy is very much to be proactive in protecting the equality of members of the LGBTQ community.

Let me just say also from a personal point of view, I have members of my family who are members of this community, and my guess is that almost everyone reading this also has family members that are part of this community. What we are seeking to do is ensure that these individuals feel comforted and feel safe and secure to know that the United States government and people support

them. I also want to be very clear that we are not trying to change people’s minds from a religious, moral or ethical point of view. Rather, what we’re saying is, “These are colleagues.

These are family members. These are friends.

Let’s treat everyone with the respect that they deserve.”

Can you tell us about the US Navy’s recent introduction of a pilot mental healthcare programme? How necessary is this approach for the mental health and wellbeing of US military personnel deployed in Bahrain in particular?

As I’ve had the great honour to serve four years as a diplomat embedded in the United States military, what I can tell you is that the fast and high pace of deployments since 2001 have led to great stresses and strains within our forces. So, anything the United States military can do to address the pressures that service members are under, I’m going to support. Even more broadly here within our embassy, we ensure that our staff understand that the pressures that they feel being far from home are things that we want to address before they become big problems to ensure that our personnel know that there are professionals that they can reach out to at any time. I would say the same thing about all of your readers - encourage them to talk to anyone that they need to when they feel their burdens are becoming too heavy.

You’ve had several celebrated achievements during your career, which of these do you think has helped you most in your role as ambassador?

Well, I’ve been at this a long time, and I can say that every job that I’ve had, every step that I’ve taken has contributed to my ability to serve effectively as ambassador, but to pinpoint one particular thing that I am proud of; I happened to be serving in Jordan in 1994 when the late King Hussain decided to make peace with Israel, and I was involved in those negotiations and the culmination of the signing of that peace treaty. That’s why I am so happy to be here at this time with His Majesty’s courageous decision to make peace with Israel and HRH the Crown Prince and Prime Minister’s implementation of that decision. I see this as coming full circle in my career, and I want to do everything I can to ensure that the Bahraini government and Bahraini people see their normalisation of relations with Israel as a complete success.

This month we spoke to Deputy President of AmCham Bahrain and Vice Chairman of JP Morgan Chase Bank, Ali Moosa, who gave us an insight into AmCham’s role in bolstering ties, the benefits of the US-Bahrain Free Trade Agreement and more.

Could you please give us a summary of your career to date?

I joined the firm back in March, 1993. At the time, the bank was operating in the Kingdom under the Chase Manhattan bank which was rebranded to JP Morgan Chase Bank post the merger in 1999.

Over the past 29 years with the firm, I have had various responsibilities and covered many markets. Since I started, I covered Financial Institutions and Public Sector entities in the GCC. My coverage was subsequently expanded to the MENA region and for the last 10 years, I have been responsible for Central Eastern Europe, Middle East and Africa (CEEMEA Region) for Financial Institution, Corporates and Public Sector for the Transactional Banking business.

More recently in 2020, I was nominated to be Global Head of business in New York to become the first Global Vice Chairman for Payments businesses in addition to my Chief Officer responsibility for Bahrain, Lebanon and Egypt.

USA in Bahrain Today, I have three key senior responsibilities: the first one is Vice Chairman for Global Payments within Corporate and Investment Bank, CEEMEA Regional Executive for Transactional Banking Business, and Chief Country Officer, Bahrain, Egypt and Lebanon. I am also serving my country by being on the board of multiple corporates and government entities, including Bahrain EDB, Future Generation Fund, AmCham, Bahrain Associations of Banks and Gulf Air. How did you become involved with AmCham?

JP Morgan has been an active member of AmCham for many years. AmCham has provided us with an excellent platform to engage with both, the US business community in Bahrain and the international finance community. Pre-COVID, JP Morgan sponsored an annual luncheon with AmCham that brought together the leaders of the financial community and we look forward to resuming this again.

What are your specific roles and responsibilities as AmCham Deputy President?

As Deputy President of AmCham I support the President and fill in when he is not available.

In addition, along with the rest of our committed board members, I contribute to the vision and mission of AmCham.

Recently I led the AmCham Bahrain delegation to the AmCham MENA regional forum in Amman Jordan. This was the first in-person regional forum since COVID and it was an important and successful opportunity to reestablish our partnership with the 12 participating AmChams. Most people just think of America and Bahrain but AmCham connects its members to a regional network of business leaders. This regional community of AmChams is a useful benefit for members expanding our network far beyond Bahrain’s borders.

How do you feel AmCham has bolstered relations between Bahrain and the USA? AmCham has provided an excellent forum for US businesses in Bahrain to have a collective voice for suggested solutions on issues that impact business to both, the US and Bahraini governments. AmCham provides a direct link to the largest and most powerful business associations in the world – the US Chamber of Commerce in Washington DC. I believe that in the coming months we will be focusing on sponsoring and conducting more trips to the US for relevant entities from Bahrain to meet with the US Chamber of Commerce, but most importantly, to meet US investors that are interested to do business in Bahrain.

What events does AmCham organise in order to boost networking and business?

AmCham is very active and offers on average www.bahrainthismonth.com

about 25 to 30 events a year for its members – including business networking luncheons with high level government and industry speakers, roundtable discussions with visiting VIPs on current topics of interest, business tours and more.

Since in-person events are critical for AmCham, we are very happy that we have resumed in-person events where everybody can participate, and appreciate the networking and dialogue achieved at these events.

What is the status of the US and Bahrain’s Free Trade Agreement at the moment? Has this been a successful element of the relationship between the two countries and for Bahraini exporters in particular?

Absolutely. The US-Bahrain FTA came into force in 2006 and it is alive and well in 2022.

It does not expire and both Bahraini and US companies alike have benefitted from the FTA over the years.

It has also enhanced the total export and import of goods between the countries. There is very good news on Bahraini exports of goods to the United States – which totalled USD1.23 billion in 2021, surpassing preCOVID levels and up 285 percent from 2005 (pre-FTA). US exports to Bahrain totalled USD934 million in 2021, remaining behind pre-COVID trade. This is a trade balance of USD297 million in Bahrain’s favour, which shows Bahrain is certainly benefitting from the FTA. The purpose of the FTA is to increase trade and economic opportunities for both countries. Under the FTA, both governments removed tariffs and duties on all traded consumer, agricultural, and industrial products, and liberalised the market for services. The FTA also supports bilateral investment, facilitating job creation in both countries.

Has your accomplished career in banking and finance helped you in any specific way for your role at AmCham?

As I get closer to the 30-year milestone with the corporate and investment bank, the in-depth international banking experiences in multiple jurisdictions and the diversity of banking products and services, managing critical roles and leadership positions within the firm was truly invaluable.

Without a doubt, my extensive career in Banking with JPMorgan has brought a huge wealth of experience to the table in order to drive and take AmCham’s priorities forward but I must also give credit to the Kingdom of Bahrain. The dynamics of this country are truly unique and the leadership of this great country recognises and embraces talent and encourages Bahrainis to become successful in their respective industries to ensure that such contributions of successful Bahrainis are recognised on an international level.

How healthy is the banking and finance sector in Bahrain right now? Does the economic crisis worldwide have a bearing on the economy here?

Bahrain naturally cannot ignore what is happening on the international stage - all countries globally are facing the same economic challenges. When speaking about the banking sector in Bahrain in particular, the Central Bank’s balanced regulatory measures continue to support and protect the sector in facing such challenges while providing an environment that supports innovation and new banking solutions.

Bahrain dynamics are unique in terms of its ability to be nimble, versatile and adapt in order to protect its economy. A prime example was the leadership’s hugely successful management of the pandemic.

The ability to adapt and protect nationals and residents of the Kingdom with a massive contribution by the banking sector when it comes to deferred loans during this period of need. That said, there is still an opportunity for banks in the country to further optimise and increase their balance sheet efficiency through several initiatives.

In terms of inflation, the global economy is already facing record inflation levels– the global economy today is highly interconnected such that inflation in the US/ Europe will ultimately have an impact on the global community.

How attractive is Bahrain and the GCC region to American investors currently and why?

Since Bahrain is small, it can be overlooked at times – even within the region. However, once investors learn about Bahrain and what it has to offer as a business-friendly hub with its well-prepared workforce, excellent infrastructure and high-quality of life, it is seen as an attractive prospect by investors.

Bahrain’s 22 FTAs and now the two new GCC FTAs with UK and India being negotiated make Bahrain a tremendous location to establish a manufacturing hub that leverage these FTAs. Do you have anything more to add?

Most recently, Bahrain launched the US Trade Zone which is a very interesting model to attract US Investors to further leverage the FTA. This will further solidify Bahrain’s position as the US trade gateway to the other regional markets.

AmCham reaffirms the continued strategic importance of the cooperation and sees positive signs - and continues to support bilateral cooperation. In fact, earlier this year, Amcham moderated a fireside chat and dialogue between Ambassador of the Kingdom of Bahrain to the US, HE Shaikh Abdulla bin Rashid Al Khalifa, and Ambassador of the US to the Kingdom of Bahrain, HE Steven Bondy.

TASTING SUCCESS Wassim Farhoud is the brainchild behind Amalfi Foods, a new factory based in Bahrain which produces delectable readyto-eat pancake sandwiches which are sold in shops and supermarkets across the GCC. We spoke to the Managing Director to find out more about how AmCham has helped his business grow.

The Kingdom of Bahrain’s food production industry has been growing steadily over the past decade with newcomers invigorating and modernising the approach to producing food.

One such company is the innovative Amalfi Foods, a boutique factory which started out as an idea in 2008. It was not until 2016 that the idea developed into a full-fledged business which was then launched to great success in June 2020.

Mr. Farhoud, an American who has been in Bahrain since high school, knows more than most about the relationship between the two countries and is now finding success selling an American staple food as part of a Bahraini brand.

He says: “After high school I wanted to start a business, but launching a factory is not feasible without experience and finance.

Mr. Farhoud believes that AmCham provides good networking opportunities and that the institution clarifies many rules and regulations that are important for businesses such as Amalfi Foods to grow in the region.

“I’ve been a member of AmCham for two years, and believe it’s a great platform to build on. It organises multiple tours and events every year, where we gain lots of insight about the current market so it’s a great facilitator,” he says.

Amalfi Foods, which is inspired and modelled after Japanese baked confectionery goods, has grown to specialise in the production of baked goods and confectionary. Their ‘Fluffy’ pancakes are growing to be wildly popular due to the convenience they offer and fun brand presence. The ready-to-eat pancakes are available plain in stacks of four, or as a sandwich in three flavours.

Educational Excellence Access Training Center (ATC), which is affiliated with the American Cultural & Educational Centre (ACEC) was founded in 2003 to establish a high-quality American-labelled English language educational facility in order to assist in the economic and social development of Bahrain. We spoke to Liam John Bellamy, Director and Head of Academics, to find out more about the educational institution.

ACEC is one of the Kingdom’s premier American English centres and provides English language training to students of all ages and nationalities.

A secondary branch located in Juffair, Access Training Centre (ATC), was created to help adults develop their skills for the job market.

Mr. Bellamy said: “ACEC was established by the American Embassy to improve the visibility of America in terms of culture and education, and to promote American values. We do far more than teach English too, we offer courses on employability skills in a number of fields such as construction and hospitality.

“We’re going further than this too, offering courses on risk assessment, crisis management, legal issues and other advanced business courses to help managers be more effective in business and also run their operations smoothly.

We aim to make our students assets to companies rather than just employees.”

ACEC runs eight sessions per year, each lasting five weeks. People can sign up for one session and drop in and out of the sessions as they like rather than having to commit to three, six or 12 months of one block where they can’t make every session, meaning more flexibility and less risk to students such as single mothers who might unexpectedly face issues attending regularly.

Mr. Bellamy continued: “Ultimately, we promote an authentic classroom environment where learning English as a foreign language is a very rewarding, meaningful, and effective

process. We have a strong, multicultural group of teachers who have been in Bahrain a long time so understand the local culture and provide the best environment for education.”

St Christopher’s School Production of Matilda The marvellous St Christopher’s School production of Matilda by Roald

Dahl took place in June and welcomed over 1000 audience members. Matilda is the story about a little girl with astonishing wit, intelligence and psychokinetic powers who lives with cruel parents. The story follows the young girl who builds a bond with her kind teacher, Ms Honey, while highlighting the cruel antics of the school’s headmistress, Ms Trunchbull. Matilda was played by Georgia MacKellar, Miss Trunchbull by Sasha Ladki, and Miss Honey was played by Mathilde Barker.

The cast included forty-two students from Years 5 and 6 with a thirteen-strong supporting backstage crew. The students were supported by 14 Parent Volunteers and four staff volunteers as well as the Musical Director, Choreographer, Producer, Maintenance and Tech crews. The Production was proudly sponsored by Platinum Sponsor, ILA Bank, as well as Nissan and Tamimi Markets.

NEW VENUE, FANTASTIC FOOD!

JJ’s Irish Restaurant has grown new roots in Adliya’s bustling Block 338.

Farah Baig checks out some of its prized items, off their revamped menu, and discovers what she believes are the best sliders she’s ever had!

JJ’s Irish Restaurant has been one of the most popular nightlife and entertainment venues in Bahrain since it opened its doors in 1999. So, it comes as no surprise that when the team briefly closed their doors to work on a fresh venue, their phones, social media and other online platforms were abuzz with patrons asking, “What’s happened to JJ’s?!”

Well, I’m happy to report that JJ’s stunning new venue in Adliya’s Block 338 is now open. The space is spectacular with areas for live entertainment, socialising, a bit of pool and even has its iconic bar from its original venue!

What thrilled us, though, is the fact that with the help of its invigorated menu, JJ’s is evolving into an exciting restaurant where you can enjoy a good meal all day!

Chef Nikhil and the rest of the JJ’s team had quite a spectacular spread prepared for us when we’d visited. To start our lunchtime feast, we tucked into Paddy Burke’s Peppers Soup and the Goat Cheese and Kale Salad. We quite enjoyed the punch of the red, yellow and orange peppers, especially with the crunch of the potato shavings that topped it off.

The salad, on the other hand, would make a satisfying light meal on its own as it has the perfect balance of flavours and textures with fresh kale, crumbled goat cheese, crushed walnuts, beetroot and just the right amount of dressing.

Next, we were served the Scottish Smoked Salmon on toasted multi-grain bread that the team makes in-house. The smooth flavour of the salmon goes well with the fresh greens and www.bahrainthismonth.com

flavourful drizzle of dill mayo. The Potato Skins at JJ’s were phenomenal as they were loaded with chunky beef chilli con carne that was just bursting with flavour as if it had been simmering away for hours.

Who doesn’t love a good platter of Fish and Chips? JJ’s take on the classic dish is beautifully presented with hand cut chips, mushy peas and tartare sauce. The fish is just right – crisp with a sprinkle of sea salt. We soon learnt that the Wicklow Lamb Chops are a must try; they’re meaty and moist, and work well with the sweet crushed carrots and parsnips.

One of my absolute favourite things about my dining experience has to be the delectable sliders. Dare I say… they were the best sliders I’ve ever had. The team has perfected their juicy housemade patties which sit pretty on light toasted Brioche buns and fresh veggies. The flavour of the cheddar cheese, coupled with the truffle mayo was just fantastic! It’s the sort of thing you’d crave in the middle of the week – just perfection!

To top things off, we enjoyed the Chocolate Marbled Mousse Cake which is a delectable combination of white and dark chocolate.

Being an Irish restaurant, JJ’s also serves truly authentic Irish fare including a full Irish breakfast, steak, and a variety of pies that they have perfected! With guaranteed good food and entertainment, we’re positive we’ll be returning to JJ’s every chance we get!

When it sets in, it generates negativity and that brings along its own toxic “family and friends” and they come to stay with you whether you like it or not. Bahrain This Month looks at what depression is, what causes it, how it can be addressed and what the medical professionals recommend.

I woke up in the early hours of the morning cramped. I had been sitting on the floor in the corner of my room with all the lights turned off and the blackout curtains drawn since yesterday afternoon. I was supposed to travel this morning but the depression that had hit me had removed all capacity to do this. I had sobbed and racked myself to sleep, only lack of water had woken me. As I hunched in the dark, I kept thinking “Help me. Help me...” but no help came, and no one offered. That is the problem with isolation and loneliness. No one cares because no one knows. Everyone thinks life is good but it’s not.

“Slowly I got up, my legs and back stiff from a single position taken over time. I have no desire to live on, I just do it now for want of anything else. I could not get anything done over the last few days. I knew the “black dog” was coming to visit as he always does, I just did not know how intense this visit would be or how long it would last.

This one was bad and I dread the next one.

They are getting worse and worse, and there is nothing I can do and no one to turn to. I am scared, scared of today and even more afraid of tonight... then there is tomorrow, and tomorrow night... again and again, like the tides washing in and out, the tides of my life. I have no past and no future; I am the black hole of my own life. And this is not a chapter in a book - this is real life, my life...”

epression is described as a mood disorder that causes a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest. Described as a major depressive disorder or clinical depression, it can affect how you feel, think, behave, and react and can lead to a variety of emotional, mental, and physical problems. A depressed person may have trouble doing normal day-to-day activities, focusing, completing tasks and sometimes may feel as if life isn’t worth living.

It is more than just “a bout of the blues”; depression isn’t a weakness it’s a condition and an affected person can’t simply “snap out” of it. Generally, depression requires long-term treatment.

But don’t get discouraged - most people with depression improve and feel better with medication, psychotherapy, counselling, and guidance.

Working far from home for extended periods of time often leads to depression for migrant workers and due care and consideration should always be factored in by employers. Allow and help facilitate communication, regular time off and leave when requested. For many workers, being away from friends, family and especially their wives and children is a situation of constant angst and misery.

Hence, employers should show empathy, compassion, kindness, and grace.

The harsh Middle Eastern environment also contributes towards depression as extended exposure to heat and dry environments can cause fatigue, heat

stroke and other sicknesses that can contribute to depression.

Pain can also contribute to depression.

There are two types of pain – Physical pain and Emotional pain. Physical pain speaks for itself. Emotional pain has many faces – pain of loss of something or someone, grievance, circumstances, personal physical or mental state reflection, social negativity and people’s comments or attitudes, loss by deception (theft, fraud, or robbery) or possibly the worst of all – betrayal especially when coupled with deception and infidelity. The physiological effects of betrayal linger long after the event(s) and often last indefinitely… sometimes forever.

Just growing old and the realisation of mortality, loss of opportunity and facing the inevitable including declining changes physically and mentally can be causes of depression.

Be kind to the elderly and exercise patience and empathy – your turn is coming.

Possibly the finest cure for depression is energisation – mental and physical.

There is an old saying – “A change is as good as a holiday”. Change your environment even if it is just going for a walk. Try and associate or get into the company of other energised persons or friends because energy rubs off. www.bahrainthismonth.com

Types of Depression

The symptoms caused by depression vary from one individual to another. To identify the type of depression a person has, a doctor or psychologist may add one or more specifiers. A specifier describes specific features of depression, such as: • Anxiety distress — This is depression with unusual restlessness or worries about possible events or loss of control.

• Mixed — Simultaneous depression and mania, which includes elevated self-esteem, talking too much and exuding increased nervous energy.

• Atypical — Depression that includes the ability to be cheered by happy events temporarily, an increased appetite, lethargy, and an excessive desire to sleep, sensitivity to rejection, and a bodily heaviness.

• Melancholic — Severe depression associated with lack of response to things that previously brought pleasure and is associated with early morning awakening, early morning negativity, significant changes in appetite, and feelings of guilt, irritation, or apathy.

• Peripartum onset — A common depression that occurs during pregnancy or in the periods after child delivery (postpartum).

• Psychotic — Depression with delusions or hallucinations, that may involve personal inadequacy, shortcomings, reflections of failure or other negative connotations.

• Seasonal pattern — Depression related to changes in seasons and reduced exposure to sunlight.

• Catatonia — Depression that produces physical activity that shows uncontrollable and purposeless movement or fixed and inflexible posture.

General Disorders that Cause Depression Symptoms

Some disorders include depression as a symptom. It is important to get an accurate diagnosis from an experienced and qualified medical

professional, so that appropriate treatment can be prescribed. These disorders include, but are not limited to: • Bipolar I and II disorders.

• Cyclothymic disorder.

• Disruptive mood dysregulation disorder.

• Persistent depressive disorder.

• Premenstrual dysphoric disorder.

• Other depression disorders.

Here are a few lifestyle changes that can help depression:

Exercise - Regular exercise can be as effective at treating depression as medication. Not only does exercise boost serotonin, endorphins, and other feel-good brain chemicals, it triggers the growth of new brain cells and connections, just like antidepressants do.

Social support - Strong social networks reduce isolation, a key risk factor for depression. Keep in regular contact with friends and family.

Nutrition - Eating properly is important for both your physical and mental health. Eating small, well-balanced meals throughout the day will help you keep your energy up and minimise mood swings.

Sleep - When you don’t get enough sleep, your depression symptoms will be worse since sleep has a strong effect on your mood. Sleep deprivation exacerbates irritability, moodiness, sadness, and fatigue. Make sure you’re getting enough sleep every night. Very few people do well on less than seven hours a night. Aim for somewhere between seven to nine hours each night.

Stress reduction - Make changes in your life to help manage and reduce stress. Too much stress exacerbates depression and puts you at risk for future depression. Take the aspects of your life that stress you out, such as work overload or unsupportive relationships, and find ways to minimise their impact. www.bahrainthismonth.com

50 STATES OF MOTORING On the occasion of the Independence Day of the United States, Kristian Harrison takes on an insightful journey through the world of US motoring.

T

here are few nations in the world which can claim to have influenced the world of automobiles more than the United States.

Just think of the surfeit of global icons that have rolled off production lines from the other side of the Atlantic; the Ford Mustang, the Chevy Corvette, the Cadillac, the Dodge Charger, right through to Tesla’s modern, electrical revolution.

Of course, there is one icon that stands above all those, which we’ll get to in a minute. But first, it’s important to note that America’s automotive journey begins at a time before the first car was even invented. The year 1850 was

the dawn of the American System of Manufacturing which would establish a reliance on efficiency and set up a greater use of machine parts.

Manufacturing became faster, cheaper, easier and with little difference in quality from unit to unit. As the system grew in popularity across America, it would set up a vital structure responsible for the rapid growth of the automotive industry.

The first successfully designed American car was created in 1893 by bicycle mechanics and

brothers J. Frank and Charles Duryea of Springfield, Massachusetts. Two years later the first American car race was held and won by their vehicle. It would be on sale to the public by 1896.

By 1899 there were thirty American companies manufacturing 2,500 cars. In the following decade another 485 companies would enter the market. But only a select few would be successful enough to last.

One that certainly made the grade is the defining vehicle of America, and arguably the world. In 1908, Henry Ford and the Ford Motor Company introduced the Model T, designed in Detroit, which aimed to bring ‘affordable’ vehicles to the American middle class.

Within days of release, more than 15,000 orders had been placed and that success would continue for years, with 15 million sold by the time it ceased production in 1927.

Arguably even more important than the car itself was Ford inventing the moving assembly line in 1913, which allowed mass production

motoring to reach new levels of speed and efficiency.

Soon, half of the world’s automobiles were Fords and the company produced more than every other manufacturer combined, which is not surprising when production time was whittled down to just 90 minutes compared to the 13 hours of traditional methods.

Though the century began with plenty of competition for the American automotive industry, by the end of the 1920s the effects of the Great Depression would eliminate most of the smaller firms until the market was all but dominated by three Detroit-based companies: Ford, General Motors and Chrysler.

Throughout the middle of the century, the ‘Big Three’ as they became known would overcome numerous obstacles through design innovation, progressive style updates and brand strengthening.

Detroit became known as Motor City and engineering professionals flocked to Michigan to work with the biggest automotive names.

Across the United States, automobiles stimulated participation in outdoor recreation and spurred the growth of tourism industries, such as service stations, roadside restaurants, drive-in cinemas and motels. The construction of streets and highways, one of the largest items of government expenditure, peaked when the Interstate Highway Act of 1956 inaugurated the largest public works programme in history.

They ended rural isolation and provided access for urban amenities – such as better medical care and schools – to rural Americans.

The automobile changed the architecture of the typical American dwelling, altered the conception and composition of the urban neighbourhood, and freed homemakers from the narrow confines of the home. No other historical force has so revolutionised the way Americans work, live, and play.

If you think of a typical American car design, you won’t be far from the muscle and pony cars with their long bonnets and small rears.

Beginning with the iconic Ford Mustang in 1964, these vehicles captured the public imagination and spawned endless imitators such as the Chevrolet Camaro, Dodge’s Charger and Challenger, and the Pontiac Firebird.

The rise of the Japanese motoring industry and their innovations in production meant that the 70s and 80s were a fallow period for American manufacturers, losing market global share at an alarming rate.

Since then, fortunes have risen and fallen with the global price of oil considering the American conscience of gas-guzzling trucks and muscly

performance. However, even the most stubborn producers have realised that automotive design is going through a fundamental change with smart, green technology and electronic functionality taking over in importance.

The one name that stands out as making the biggest impact on this front is Elon Musk’s Tesla, now the world’s most valuable automaker in the world, which is setting new standards for both electric cars and manufacture.

The firm has built its first ‘gigafactory’ in Storey County, Nevada, manned by 10,000 workers. As well as setting new standards of factory size, the facility is also energy self-reliant, powered through a combination of on-site solar, wind and geo-thermal sources.

Mirroring Henry Ford’s incredible work, the US is once again at the forefront of radical changes in automobile manufacturing as the industry heads into an uncertain future.

uring my days at university when I was studying economics, discussions were usually around free economies and the Adam Smith driven capitalist mindset. The related view by Milton Friedman that the sole responsibility of a company is to maximise shareholders wealth, has been the primary guiding principle for decades. However, that has started to change relatively recently.

In 2017, a Nobel Lawyer from Harvard (Oliver Hart) and a scholar from the University of Chicago (Luigi Zingales) put forth an alternative definition. As per their research, the ultimate shareholders of a company (either institutional investors or those who invest in those institutions) are ordinary people who in their daily lives are concerned about more than just money. They have ethical and social concerns, for example some people buy an electric car because that person cares about pollution or global warming. Taking this into account, in reality, the aim of companies is shareholder welfare rather than shareholder wealth. This brings the conundrum of 52 July 2022

shareholder returns because are shareholder willing to give up on supernormal returns for what they believe in? Increasingly, the answer seems to be “yes”, and the impact industry and impact investing have been on a growth trajectory.

As per the Global Impact Investing Network (GIIN), the estimated market size of the Impact Investing industry is as high as USD 715 billion . Impact investing is not philanthropy. Impact investors expect to generate profits at either market level or sometimes, at slightly below market level. As per the GIIN 2020 Impact Investor Survey, 67 percent of respondents were aiming at risk-adjusted market returns and only 15 percent had an aim of below market returns or capital preservation.

So, what is the Impact Investing really? It refers specifically to investments that make a positive social and environmental impact on a local, national or global scale. In addition to making financial returns on investment, impact investors focus on how they can make a difference in the world through finances,

business ventures, and projects. Impact investing can cover a wide array of topics from sustainability in agriculture, to reducing carbon footprints with technology, to advocating for job security and financial literacy.

In the Gulf region too, this tendency to “invest for good”, is catching up. As per a research paper commissioned by Barclays Private Bank, around USD1 trillion dollars in private wealth, is likely to be transferred to the next generation by 2030. This new generation is showing a desire to use family wealth for the greater good. Fifty-nine percent of Middle East HNWs say their children have taken the lead on ethical and social investment matters, which is on par with the 56 percent global average . For those who are not already engaging in impact-based decisions, 22 percent of the elder generations would like to find out more about their sustainable investment options, and 19 percent are interested in understanding more about investing specifically for positive social and environmental impact.

Banks and financial institutions are also taking a more sustainable approach to their products – but this is currently with a focus on ESG rather that impact. Green bonds, green credit, green sukuks – all are on the rise in the region. First Abu Dhabi Bank has committed to net zero and in 2022 the bank announced its USD213 million green issuance this year, following the 500-million-euro green bond issued a week earlier. Islamic Development Bank issued a USD2.5 billion sustainability sukuk and

Arab Petroleum Investments Corporation (APICORP) went to market with its debut green bond of $750 million. Commercial banks are beginning to actively evaluate a green lending portfolio.

The world we live in needs to be long terms sustainable. Something that’s profitable, but not sustainable, just doesn’t grasp as much positive attention any more.

We have been taught that value comes from money, but today, people are realising that money is the numeric expression of something similar to value. A Worthy Contender The Chief Digital Officer of the e-commerce platform Homiez.me, Sadiq Abdul Rasool, believes that the Kingdom of Bahrain is prepared to compete regionally and globally in the field of e-commerce.

Speaking during the Seamless Middle East 2022 Conference in Dubai, Mr. Rasool stated that he believes that this is dependent on several factors including the availability of a fast, reliable, and widespread internet service, the orientation of more citizens and residents for digital shopping, the availability of banking services and digital financial transfer services, and the presence of national competencies capable of creating and developing more stores and digital platforms.

“Individual e-commerce experiences in the GCC states are now similar to those in major developed countries in terms of infrastructure, logistical network, advanced FinTech, turnout, and other elements, as the difference in the e-commerce index between the six Gulf countries and the first six countries globally, decreases to less than 17 percent in 2021, from more than 35 percent before 2019,” added Mr. Rasool.

During his speech, Mr. Rasool addressed more technical topics, such as meeting user needs in the shadow of technology and the basic engines of the market, even in the retail and distribution sectors.

A BOLD STEP FORWARD FOR BAHRAIN TOWARDS NET EMISSIONS TARGET Mondelēz Bahrain Biscuits WLL, recently signed a solar power purchase agreement with Yellow Door Energy, a provider of sustainable energy for businesses in the Middle East and Pakistan.

Located at the state-of-the-art Mondelēz biscuit factory in Al-Hidd, Bahrain, the solar plant will have a capacity of 2.3 megawatts and will comprise over 4,200 solar panels for both rooftop and carport applications. Once completed, the solar plant is expected to produce 3,820 megawatt-hours of clean energy in the first year of operation, equivalent to reducing carbon emissions by 2,400 metric tonnes.

businesses in Bahrain switch to clean energy, reduce their electricity costs and contribute to the Kingdom’s Net Zero by 2060 Initiative.”

As the solar developer, Yellow Door Energy is responsible for financing, designing, building, commissioning, operating, and maintaining the solar plant for the duration of the agreement.

The Quarry is a survival horror interactive drama video game played from a third-person perspective. In the game, the player assumes control of nine different teenagers who must survive a night at the title location of The Quarry, a summer camp in upstate New York, Hackett’s Quarry.

GAMEPLAY

The player must make different decisions, which can change the character development, the plot and the relationships between different characters. All nine playable characters may die by the end of the game, and each character potentially has 10-12 different ways to die. An average playthrough should expect to last for about 10 hours, though early death of certain characters may cause the game to end earlier at around seven hours. Due to the game’s branching storyline, it has many endings, and at the end of a playthrough, players will be given different collectible cards that depict the fate of each character.

SUPER PERILS OF BAKING

A Woman in Power

Dr. Raida Al Alawi is a wellaccomplished woman who has received several awards and accolades for her efforts in the field of engineering – a profession that is widely dominated by men all around the world. She has proved to be a prime inspiration for women pursuing the field in the Kingdom having been the first Bahraini woman to receive a Ph.D. degree in Engineering.

She spoke to Farah Baig about her most recent milestone achievement – being named the ‘President of the Bahrain Society of Engineers (BSE)', making her the first female president in the history of the society.

You are renowned in the field of engineering, but could you kindly tell our readers a little about yourself?

During my school years, my favourite subject was always Maths as it was based on logic. My enjoyment for Maths grew during high school, where I attained the highest score in the subject nationwide. I was also excited by the idea of designing things for the advancement of society, and so, my passion led me to pursue engineering for my undergraduate studies.

I received a BSc degree in Electrical Engineering from Kuwait University, followed

by MSc in Computer Engineering from the University of London and ultimately a Ph.D. Degree in Computational Intelligence from Brunel University – London. I am honoured to have been the first Bahraini woman to receive a Ph.D. degree in Engineering.

I recently joined the American University of Bahrain as Adjunct Professor, prior to which I was the Director of Technology Development

at BFG International. Prior to this appointment, I had held academic positions and served in various key strategic, academic and planning committees at the University of Bahrain (UOB) and Ahlia University.

I also currently chair the ICT committee of the Federation of Arab Engineers and am currently serving as a Programme Evaluator and Reviewer for a number of academic related organisations. I also conducted various consultancy projects in the IT field and am a referee for several International Journals in the area of Electronics and Computer Engineering.

You have received several honours throughout your illustrious career.

Could you tell us about some of the most memorable ones?

For this reason, I stood for the election for the position of President of the Bahrain Society of Engineers to use my practical, scientific and administrative experiences that I gained during my career or through my membership in many local and international voluntary professional organisations.

Yes, and you were quite successful; congratulations on your election as president of BSE! How do you feel about being the first female President of the society?

It’s a real honour to be the president of BSE. I highly appreciate the members trust and confidence in my abilities to elect me as BSE president. It’s a challenging position, because engineering is a profession that is dominated by men, and it is more challenging when it comes to leadership. I believe that women leadership can drive change and leave a positive impact on BSE excellence.

What are your thoughts on the role of women in the field of engineering in the Kingdom of Bahrain?

in Engineering, and the UOB Certificate of Excellence in Teaching are among the awards I have received. I was also honoured to be nominated by the World Federation of Engineering Organisation (WFEO) to be a member at the UN University Council.

I am also thrilled to be listed as one of leading women engineers sharing their leadership journey in the book ‘Rising to The Top’ published by the International Network for Women Engineers and Scientists (INWES) in collaboration with the World Federation of Engineering Organisation.

The Bahrain Society of Engineers is a volunteer professional organisation established in 1972. Could you tell us about your involvement with BSE?

I joined BSE in 1985 after receiving my master’s degree. A few years later I applied for a life membership and have since been participating in their activities, conferences and committees. For the past four years, I www.womanthismonth.com

Bahraini women are making remarkable progress in all fields on the national level. In the Engineering field, Bahraini women have made great achievements since the graduation of the first Bahraini female engineer in the year 1977. The support and empowerment granted by the Supreme Council for Women (SCW), chaired by HRH Princess Sabeeka bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa, Wife of His Majesty the King and President of the Supreme Council for Women, has a great impact promoting the role of women engineers in Bahrain.

Today, you can see Bahraini women engineers contributing effectively in almost all engineering disciplines and at all levels. Today, 35 percent of the engineering workforce in the government sector are Bahraini women while with 21 percent being in the private sector.

That brings me to my next point. How many members does the society have and how many of those members are women?

BSE has around 2,800 registered members, however only 1,140 members are active.

There are five membership categories:

Fellow, Member, Graduate, Affiliate and Student. Almost 25 percent of the members are females.

The society has had some major accomplishments in the last 50 years.

What are some of your main goals as the President of BSE, taking the organisation forward?

As a president of BSE, I have several goals including strengthening the society’s role as an effective and responsible entity in the national development projects. This is in addition to enhancing the performance of BSE training centre to transform it to a regional centre for training and qualifying engineers in accordance with international standards.

I also intend to create a platform to help recruit job-seeking engineers in collaboration with concerned authorities. Further, I intend to enhance BSE’s financial stability by diversifying sources of income, better utilisation of internal resources, and reducing operating expenses. I will also be working towards strengthening our collaborations with GCC, regional and international engineering organisations. Strengthening partnership with universities, engineering firms and industrial organisations to conduct research and promote entrepreneurship is also at the forefront of my goals.

I also intend to have an active role in reviewing and accrediting Engineering programmes offered by local universities, and collaborate with other professional societies in Bahrain to direct the professional volunteer work in common areas of interest.

Is there anything else you would like to add at this time?

I extend my sincere thanks to the previous BSE Board of Directors, led by its President, Dr. Dheya Tawfiqi, for the tremendous efforts they made during the past session, in which BSE faced many challenges due to the pandemic. They worked to ensure the continuity of volunteer work by finding innovative solutions to implement various events and activities.

I believe that BSE greatest strength is its members and volunteers - from student members to professional engineers to retired members with their accumulated experience.

For this, I would like to thank everyone who contributed to the success, development and leadership of the Bahrain Society of Engineers, and I pledge to continue giving - to achieve comprehensive and sustainable development that achieves the goals and visions of the society and pushes towards more excellence.

When it comes to skin, summer heat and humidity is rarely our friend. Living in high temperatures affects not only the appearance of the skin, but also affects the health of our skin. However, just a few simple changes in your daily skincare regimen can ensure you glow through the season smoothly.

Dubai’s go-to skincare and laser expert, Rebecca Treston shares five simple steps for achieving a beautiful summer skin glow while tackling the heat:

4 KEEP MOISTURISING

Moving in and out of AC areas alone can cause your skin to dry out. Just like your wardrobe in warmer weather, your skin needs far more hydration in warmer weather. Taking more than one shower in the summer months also dries out skin, so it’s essential to moisturise your face and body.

1 APPLY SUNSCREEN OFTEN

The scorching summer heat can be unforgiving on your skin and dermatologists recommend a broad-spectrum SPF of at least 30 for all exposed skin. Apply this at least 20 minutes before you head out into the sun and don’t forget to apply it on your hands and feet. Regular use of sunscreen can go a long way in minimising sun related spots and helps in avoiding sagging skin, fine lines, and wrinkles. Also, don’t forget to re-apply throughout the day, especially if you have been inside for a long time since the last application.

2 BEAT THE HEAT WITH FACE MISTS Dry skin can be your worst nightmare on hot summer days. Using face mists can refresh and revive tired skin within seconds. It not only helps you cool down, but also gives you a dewy glow with a feel-good effect on your skin.

One tip is to keep it refrigerated and apply it throughout the day to refresh and reinvigorate.

3 PROTECT THAT POUT The skin on our lips is extremely sensitive and much thinner than the rest of our face and body, making it vulnerable to the effects of harsh sunlight and drying AC. 5 LIMIT YOUR TIME IN THE SUN

Be mindful of how much time you’re spending in the sun and try to deliberately seek shade where possible. Depending on your skin type, five to 20 minutes of sun exposure is enough to cause sun damage. Wear widebrimmed headgear and suitable UV protective eyewear to protect the delicate skin on your face and eyes and use an umbrella to avoid exposing yourself to direct sunlight.

HOW CAN MY CHILD STOP INTERRUPTING ME?

Ouiam El Hassani shares five constructive steps to help teach your child to politely join the conversation.

H

ow many times have you been trying to have a conversation on the phone with a friend, when all you could hear was a cute voice saying “GREEN, MAMA! GREEN!!” having been excited to figure out the colour green? You probably really wanted to finish that conversation with that friend though.

Although interrupting can be perfectly normal behaviour, it is possible to help children develop patience, and polite ways to join a conversation. Children interrupt because they are either too young and impulsive, or they don’t have any tools for respectfully interrupting. Another key reason for interrupting is that some children don’t have skills or a set plan for how to wait.

Toddlers often interrupt because they are still learning to regulate their impulses. When a toddler has a great thought, they want to share it, and they want to share it NOW! Here are five steps to help teach your child to stop interrupting: 1. Model respectful communication and attentive listening It’s a great idea to introduce turn taking and respectful communication early on.

Model what you wish to see and the language you wish to hear.

• Let a baby know that you will be picking them up instead of swooping in and surprising them.

• Explain to a toddler that play time is almost over instead of insisting they finish when you say so.

2. Try a special code or hand signal Extending a hand for holding, a special nod or some other little signal can be really helpful, especially if it is practiced or talked about ahead of time.

3. Be mindful of when you must interrupt your child It’s helpful to use the same respectful language we would use when interrupting an adult when doing the same to a child. For example: “Looks like you are having a lot of fun, I need to interrupt you and help you clean up.”

4. Respectfully ask your child to wait Providing opportunity for children to learn to wait is important, but it needs to happen at a time when the child can actually succeed.

5. Give it time and adjust expectations The process of learning not to interrupt or to do so politely takes practice. Sometimes all you have to do is let them know you’re not ready to listen by saying “I need a few more minutes please,” or “I will listen to you in a moment.”

Other times, it’s helpful to remember that growing children make mistakes and get excited. They are not interrupting to be rude or because they don’t care about you and your needs.

Interruptions can seem disrespectful but beware of using consequences or commands such as “Shhhhhh!” or “Zip it!” to manage this kind of unhelpful behaviour. While you may get a child’s attention and get them to stop talking, or bothering you, this does not create the opportunity to teach. Children will learn much more about taking turns, waiting, listening attentively and respecting others if you choose to model how you expect it to be done.

Explain to your child that you will be busy, that you will pay attention to them when you are done, and be specific if you can: “I will talk on the phone for a few minutes and then we can read that book.” www.womanthismonth.com
